    Great vid mate. Been loving all the content you have been putting out. The rock fishing for snapper in NZ puts our australian fish to shame. Has actually inspired me to do a month on the north island targetting snapper in 2018. Cheers

      A lot of guys have switched to braid for surfcasting, but a plenty of guys still use mono for rock fishing....

  • @trentmiller7532
    @trentmiller7532 4 года назад +1

    I like 50/50 BRAID to MONO. I’m a MONO guy, but I do spool my first half of my reel with braid, to gain “yards” of available line, for those “big ones”. I use a “DOUBLE UNI KNOT” to tie the two together. I have more success in windy conditions casting MONO (BAITCASTER), and have lost A LOT fewer fish, while fishing structure with MONO. The braid cuts to easy in my opinion.

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  4 года назад

      50/50 can be a great set up, so you just change the mono when it wears out. The braid will last a long time this way too.....

    Hi i have a 11 foot rod and penn spinfisher 6500 reel i have 50 pound braid on the reel is that a good set up for fishing of the rocks

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  7 лет назад +4

      You'll definitely catch fish although 50 pound braid is more suited to kingfish. 30lb braid is a bit more sensitive for detecting bites. Your set up will still work without a doubt.....

    Hi Scott, are you familiar with shore jigging? how effective has it been for you? the suitability of the reel high-, low or power gear reel? cheers

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  7 лет назад

      Yes, I have a video coming out soon on shore jigging. You need the right location especially if you want your lure to get decent hang time in the water column. It's been ok, good for hitting a spot that cant be reached by a cast bait. It also covers a fair amount or area. Some days still difficult to beat bait. Any reel that retrieves around 100cm or more per turn of the handle works fine.

    I have a okuma cortez reel and cortez rod the only problem is its 6 foot and is miles too short when I fish off the rocks. what kind of rods do you recommend for overheads?

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  7 лет назад +1

      There's not a lot in the market for overhead reels in the 10ft length. You will have to do a little hunting, I would suggest you flick an email to Marine Deals or Go Fish to see what they have, also there will be options with salmon rods -try Complete Angler in Christchurch - they can be expensive but beautiful rods. Another option , if you have a bit of time to hunt one down, the Kilwell Rocky / Jellytip 8ft 10-15kg rods are awesome. There might be some shops that have them in stock otherwise look at Trademe, there is one on there at the moment, at time of posting. The other option is to take your reel into a shop and try it on a spin rod - sometimes the guides are configured well enough to suit overheads too. Caught snapper up to 18lb on a spin rod/overhead reel set up so they still work. Maybe try the Shimano vortex 10ft 10-15kg rod first if this is the route you want to take...

    I have 20 pound mono line on my 6500 Diawi what would you suggest use for a leader off the rocks or beach ?

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  6 месяцев назад

      depends on how rocky the area is that you're fishing, how likely you are to encounter a big fish and how shy the fish are - 40lb would be a good start. If you are fishing in a spot that has a lot of pressure during the day then maybe go down to 30lb if you're not getting much action. In the Far North in remote spots where Im likely to encounter big fish I use 60lb.

    hey digi what do you recommend for bait runners the thunnus or baitrunnner.
    Cheers

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  7 лет назад +1

      Thunnus is Ci4 and nice and light and have the better featured gearing etc compared to the Ocea and D series baitrunners - buy the Thunnus if you can afford it, if you buy the D series or Ocea series, just look after it and you'll do well with those reels as well.

    Is the first rod a Silstar Crystal Powertip? By coincidence I just picked up the 10 foot version of this rod and also a Thunnus reel to go with it, especially for the baitrunner feature. I've found, a lot of the time Snapper like to pick up the bait and swim away with it and it's hard to get drag levels right. I've had good luck with the Crystal Powertips lately, got a 75cm Snapper on a lowish tide on sunset in knee high water about a month ago, on the 7 foot 2-5kg version with 12lb line and I was lucky to hook it in the soft part of the lip. Also got really lucky that it didn't take me onto the rocks. But I want to try some fishing off rockwalls and have some more stopping power for setting the hook, and hopefully the 10 foot version will give some good cast distance and work better with the heavier line. Have really enjoyed watching your videos, cheers.

      It's similar to the Crystal tip but it's actually an ABU garcia rod....

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  7 лет назад

      Yes, mussels and pipis are good bait. Catching some small fish like mackerel or piper can also work. Look for some patches of sea weed to fish near, as it gets dark and as it gets light are good times to fish - maybe take your mum along :) good luck...

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  7 лет назад

      Yeah sounds good - may depend on how rough the terrain is eg how high off the water you're fishing, how many obstacles, how high the waves are washing up the rocks... plenty of places to fish that kind of rod.

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  7 лет назад

      Hmmm if you can get away with horsing fish and gear over the oyster beds, it would work but if you have to play fish you will lose a lot of fish/gear....may depend on the stage of the tide too....oyster beds can claim a lot of gear so if you're ok with that.....

    50lb to 65lb coated braid is a must or else you'll lose every single rig on every single cast

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  5 лет назад

      Hmmmm for targeting snapper, kahawai and trevally 20-30lb is enough. Been fishing 20-30lb braid for the last 8+yrs and lost few rigs. My leader gives up before the braid 80% of the time, and many trips I lose no gear at all. Landed snapper up to 7kgs on 30lb braid. The coating is to help with the casting, it will eventually wear off....still fishes ok.
