Starlo shares some of his tips and secrets for improving your rock fishing catch rate when chasing "bread and butter" species such as drummer, bream, salmon and tailor from the stones.
Sorry to hear that about your Dad. I'm glad you're getting something from my RUclips videos. You should have a look at this one, too: ruclips.net/video/rHdev3kKBSc/видео.html
@@StarloGetsReel Thank you, actually you and bushy really helped me fall in love with fishing. watching your vids from back in the day gave me a huge push with motivation and researching fish, rigs, knots ect
Great episode. I used to love rock fishing when I was younger, but unfortunately, I had a mini stroke a few years ago and my balance and vision is still a bit out of whack. So from now on its beach fishing for me. At least if I fall over, it's only on the sand. Hehe.
I love fishing light off the stones for mostly Bream and Flathead, with quite a few big Dart thrown in. Also, the odd Drummer and Blackfish which are a welcome by-catch, like you I use local Aussie school prawns for bait. My rig is a Snyder CR4 136 (Whiting rod) old Alvey 500a spooled with 6lb mono and 8lb fluro leader. I use a paternoster rig - size 1 star sinker and size 1 mustard bait holder hook, mostly. I lose a few Flathead (bitten off at my feet) but hey, that’s fishing 😀👍🏻
Great videos mate I’ve never seen anyone else use shimano coastline before, I’ve had mine for maybe 10 years or more 3-6kg and it’s my go to “everything” rod. I’m guessing they arnt available anymore as I’ve never seen another one. Keep up the great content 🙌🏻🐟
Thanks for that. Yes, brilliant rods. Ian Miller and I came up with the original concept for Shimano and that blank design has now featured in quite a few of their rod ranges over the years, using various materials. I know there's currently a version in their lower-priced Catana range: the CTRCOASTL. Check it out.
Old but still relevant. Important rock fishing question: what's on your feet? Last century I was using sandshoes with the metal cleats drilled through the sole.
I usually wear rock fishing sandals or rubber wetsut style booties with good grip. Cleats can be good on very flat, slippery stuff but can actually be dangerous on some surfaces. Horses for courses, I guess.
I just caught a sea sweep yesterday off the rocks in North Mole Fremantle WA, and tbh didn't know what they were haha but threw it back in. Very fun to catch they chase the bait quite well
These videos are excellent, clear and easy. I'm new to rock fishing, and I've bought my first rod, a Penn 10"6. Only problem I find is the tip is very "soft" and sort of very whippy. Should I look for a stiffer more sensitive rod? I'd like to know what combos you are using 👍 thanks
Thanks for the videos! im new to rock fishing and finding it hard to learn all the little details, would you have a book you could recommend that would fit in a tackle bag that is good for identifying these fish on the Australian east coast?
Really depends on the terrain. They can be useful on flat, slimy ledges but may actually be dangerous on uneven surfaces. I prefer grippy rubber or synthetic soles with a deep tread pattern.
What the rod you use at this video with great thanks! I like the rock fishing very much but hard to find a suitable rod, most rod at this market are design for big fish.
Sounds okay. How long is it? Might be a bit short on the rocks. I rarely use anything less than 8 or 9 feet fro m the rocks. Sounds like you’re targeting some pretty big fish.
@@StarloGetsReel Yes mate,it is 9 foot and will do some drummer and grouper fishing with some jigging for bonito and kingfish inside Sydney harbor and possibly outside
@@joshzfishing make sure you go for the Coastline Light in the Catana range. It’s a very light rod and a 2500 or 3000 reel balances really well on it. There may be a heavier surf rod in that range so make sure you’re looking at the Coastline Light.
Thanks mate! But I am still confused about surf fishing. When I cast,do I cast beyond the breaking wave? Also,if there is a rip current or a gutter,do I cast into that?
@@joshzfishing the fish can be anywhere, so try different spots until you get bites. Cast over the actual shore break or dump that’s right at your feet, but sometimes the fish are JUST beyond that, especially if there’s a bit of depth there. Definitely fish gutters and holes but don’t rule out other areas too. Stay mobile. If you don’t get a bite after a couple of casts, move or try a different length cast. 👍
thank you for this! My dad loved rock fishing but he passed away before he could teach me everything. You explained everything perfectly.

Love a fisherman who is real and actually eats fish or is prepared to say so.
Thanks Gary! I eat plenty. ;)
I have been watching you since your first soft plastic video thith bushy, awsome to see you still going
Thanks Max!
Thanks for sharing Sir! Big fan of rock and jetty fishing and I’m also enjoying simple setup and mobility when it comes to LRF gears!
Thanks Kenny!

By-the-way, great vid 👍🏻
Good stuff! Nice set-up, too.
this video make me love light fishing bro...
Thanks!
It is not the number of fish caught but a beautiful day in the open air that counts.
True. ;)
Great Vid Starlo 👍👍
Thanks!

Tom, so long as the rod does its job it shouldn't matter if the tip is a bit "whippy".

Starlo bushy and Rex on utube wow thankyou
Thanks!
Pan fry banded sweep is the way to go
Sounds good.
How do you eat the salmon?. We cut litte nuggets from the filets and made a spicey crumb and shallow fry them off in a pan. Ok eating
Sounds good! We often smoke the fillets.
What do think about wearing steel baseball cleats when rockfishing, too much environmental damage?

Hi, and thanks! That was a Shimano Coastline Light. I'm not sure if they are made any more but you should be able to find something similar.
@@StarloGetsReel if you can’t find one the Catana at 10ft works great.

Hey mate do you think a Shimano Catana 10foot 6 inches surf rod with a Shimano Nasci 2500 could be a good light/ultra light combo?
That’s EXACTLY the combo I’m using at the moment! It’s a ripper outfit, Josh. 👍
@@StarloGetsReel yes but I was looking at the catana rod but it said the suggested reel size is 4000-5000,won’t a 2500 be a bit small?
