Good vid, thanks. I have the Shimano Backbone elite 15-24kg that you mentioned and a Shimano Tyrnos 30 spooled with 24kg mono, does the job for kingfish off the rocks over here in Aus but hasn't got the capacity for the Long Tails (Northern Bluefin) that we sometimes encounter. Still fine for when I head home to Northland though and easy to transport on the plane as it's two piece.

Great informative video. The Marlin off the rocks in New Zealand will happen eventually. The marlin needs to be around a 100kg stripey rather than a big black marlin which are in shallower water more commonly.

    Hi Scott,
I notice there is lure on the rod your holding, is it ok to use LBG rods for using stick baits or do I need a stick bait rod , what’s the difference?

Hi Marc, if you are meaning the rod in my left hand with green/silver binding, it looks like a lure but it's a cigar shaped float. LBG rods are traditionally for fishing live baits (and sometimes dead baits for sharks) with overhead reels and stickbait rods are meant for fishing stickbait baits (usually with spin reels) but some guys use them for fishing live baits as well. If you want to fish stickbaits, get a dedicated stickbait rod. They will work the lure properly which is what you want to trigger strike from the fish.

Can't seem to find what a Daiwa 80J/80S rod is. Is it an overhead rod? What range does it belong to? Saltist, Saltiga etc?

Its rated 30-60lb and about 8ft long. One piece, the S-glass brown colour. Came with chrome guides but they may have switched to ceramic/carbide guies. www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/threads/daiwa-vip-saltwater-80j-rod-30-60lb-710-80-brand-new.648943/

Hi Scott how would you match spin reels with rods? any rule to follow?cheers

If the rod is rated for a certain line weight you want the reel to be able to handle a decent amount of the line - minimum 200 meters would be my suggestion. Maybe small bait casters 150yds. the reel then should have enough drag to fish the rod properly. EG a 10-15kg rod should be able handle drag of up to say 7-9kg. 5kg would be the higher working drag for 15kg line but you need some in reserve in case you hook something big and have to max out your gear. Balance is important after that. Does the reel balance nicely with the rod?
