Hey! Glad it worked for you dude, this is still a pretty lesser-known trick. Definitely don't need to go out buying a keycap puller if you don't have one already.
A little late but this video really did help me a lot. Tons of videos about making them out of paper clips but using a fork was never thought of. Great Video ;)
Thank you! I tried those paperclip keycap pullers and none worked. Out of desperation I tried this and was scared it will break my keycaps (as you said) but it came out with so much ease I was confused! You earned a sub from me 😀
i'm glad I could help ! I think it's pretty funny that this super old and crappy video I made in high school actually ended up being useful to people getting into the hobby without lots of tools. there's a lot of skepticism around using a flat dull knife but it's seriously still the best thing I've seen. Maybe I need to produce a keyboard tool that uses this method.
Yep, no problem man. I found the knife worked better for me because with the curvature of the spoon, you're only applying force to the keycaps at two small points, the edges of the spoon. That being said, any of these household tools are better than a keycap puller. I marked up one of my artisan keycaps before with a keycap puller and said never again
and if you are replacing the key caps who cares if you damage them anyways. unless you want to save them as a backup. but some people just want to take them off to clean the inside of the caps and the switch itself; so yeh then i would be extra careful.
No, you shouldn't use a fork for that. Make your own tool using a metal wire and shape it to "U" then bent the edges to the inside, widen the "U" pattern then you can finally remove a keycap safely (for membrane and mechanical)
@@dho it is a diy tool that can last longer, mostly used for membrane keyboard. it will cause scratches. some mecha keyboards have resin artisan keycaps and it depends on what tool you should use. "use it at your own risk". when using fork, it might damage the mechanical switch. my opinion.
yeah that'll work some of the time, some keyboards it's not possible at all or is way too slow so this method is super quick. i can do a whole keyboard in a minute easily with this method
how to remove the keyswitches. It's kinda hard to remove the keys, idk how to remove it because im tryna replace it to another key switch. its a green switch
don't try. they're soldered on at the least and usually plate mounted as well. if it's pcb mount you can remove the switch top and swap the top housing, stem and spring, but it sounds like you should at least do some more research first, otherwise you'll probably end up breaking something
you need to be careful with the space bar and other big keys. they have stabilizers that can be annoying to put back in depending on the design. if they’re costar or wire stabilizers, it can be a pain to put back on. with cherry style stabilizers, you can pull it off pretty easily. just take out the surrounding keycaps and use your hands to remove it.
I have a different keyboard not a mechanical one it still makes noise when I type but it's a razor hybrid-membrane keyboard and want to know if the knife would still work just as well with it or not since I pulled out my right directional key with just my fingers easily and put it back and it works but I just want to make sure that I'm not damaging the keys if I need to use a butter knife.
so you're saying that your keycaps have a different profile than mine. my keycaps in this video are cherry profile and lower profile than the oem profile that most keyboards use from the factory...anyways, make sure you have a mechanical keyboard that have keycaps that were designed to be removed. if they are, then they should be fine to remove even if they're tight. i've never broken a keycap before or even come close to it so i wouldn't be worried about damage
@@toastedseven7944 not sure, that's not that specific, you know what i mean? just because it's tight doesn't mean that you can't remove it. but you should try looking up the model of your keyboard and see if it's mechanical, because most mechanical keyboards have removable key. like i said in the video, don't try to remove any of the large keys because they're stabilized and they're annoying to put back on
@@VarExy lol you should just use the butter knife like i mentioned in the video ! i can probably take off a keycap set in 1/3 the time with the butter knife vs the keycap puller
well, first you should find out what stabilizers you have. they're either wire or cherry. it could be pretty hard to put back on if they're wire, you'll probably fuss with it for like 15 minutes. you can still take it off the same way with the butter knife though
haha sorry, the keys are not blue, it's actually just the lighting that made the color blue. these keycaps are round3 keycaps, very old keycap set from signature plastics. it's just dolch colors.
Why didn't the keyboard just come with one of these? I swear to God mine didn't come with one and I'm sitting here like I thought these keys were removable how the fk am I supposed to remove them without damaging it. I just want to clean my keyboard
yep! hope it helped man. i've been in the keyboard community for over 5 years now lol, the fork thing sounds jank but it's actually super fast and safe too.
it depends, you should be a little more careful. if they're cherry stabilizers you can just remove it easily, for costar stabilizers you have you unhook the stabilizer tabs from the wire...if you have costar you should avoid removing the big keys that are stabilized, they take forever to put back on, like a few minutes for each key.
What keycaps do you have on the homing keys? Are they stickers or customs or something? Just from my experience, I find that with a metal wire keycap puller (I use the Filco one), it leaves little dents where you pull up on the keycap. Also, have you tried this method on clears, DSA profile keycaps, and Topre boards? They are all the tighter keycaps that I have had to remove over my time, and I wouldn't want to scratch or damage a keycap.
+Stabilized They're keycaps I got from Dodgy at a keyboard meetup. I promised to write a review on them (which I never did, whoops) so I think I'll do that tonight actually but they've been holding up pretty well for the past ~5 months. Yes, I've damaged some keycaps with a wire puller before too. I have tried using this method for all of those, as well as BS and other hard-to-remove switches. I'd stick to the butterknife for those because the prongs of a fork can damage keycaps similar to a wire keycap puller if you use enough force. This also works for custom keycaps but the resin/plastic used in custom keys tend to be softer so I try to be as gentle as possible when removing those.
from what is seem how you are doing it with the prongs on the fork though...i bet use could use some quirky engineering and bend a prong or two in the middle enough until it breaks off. that way maybe the two outside prongs of the fork can get right under the outside edges of the cap. i guess it depends on how big or small your fork is ahaha. if it is too big by breaking the two middle prongs of the fork you probably could squeeze in the two outside prongs of the fork inwards and maybe that would work? hell as long as it works who gives a shit right?
