  • Ever since I first laid eyes on the new Honda SCL500, there was one thing on my mind…that rear fender has GOT to go! And I know I’m not alone. So many of you have asked me when I plan to do a rear fender delete on the SCL500, and today is finally the day!

Those solder connections are what has been used on my Himalayan to wire in everything I did. 3 years of riding in all weather, nothing wrong. The only note I do different is feed the wire through, twist the two together, then heat it.

Hey buddy, just want to lit you know, bought the scl500 because I liked your comments, also modified a lot of things you reminded, I did find some cheap aftermarket foot peg covers, that work great. We need to figure out the best rims and tires to make it a little more trail worthy, but still do ok on street. Oh did I say mine is orange too.

Burch, you’ve been an incredible resource for me. Followed your vinyl fork tutorial to a tee, but also did my own fender eliminator, bar-end mirrors, etc. In NoVA so maybe we should take these Scramblers out together some time!
One question: I didnt install the same tail tidy that you did, but similar, and had to figure out the wiring on my own (periodic explosions from fuse box). Have you done safety inspection yet? I read that VA requires a 9” distance between the turn signals. 😦

@@LifeOfBurch happy those connections worked for you. They’re so easy to use. Only thing I do differently is twist the wires before sliding over the sleeves… yet sometimes you don’t have the clearance. Had an apprentice of mine have a wire issue (open) and he couldn’t find it. Somehow the connection failed. (Only seen this once before… super rare, obviously user error)

On the left turn signal, for the wiring diagram, for me the one that is shown in the video as pink had to be the more white looking wire and not the solid pink. Seems like you're building more of a cafe racer than you are an "improved" scrambler. You're going to want that larger rear fender if you actually take the bike on some muddy roads. I have a difficult time taking functionality away from a bike just for aesthetic purposes. And cutting that wire harness with a knife...don't be cheap or lazy, do it the right way with the proper tools and order the parts to keep it as stock looking and functioning as possible.

To me, the only thing that perhaps needed to be done was to put a new small tail light and blinkers on the stock fender I thought the stock fender looked fine and that the big tail light and blinkers were the "problem".(Although even they weren't that bad if you like retro stuff) But I am aware that the younger generation has for some unknown reason decided that rear fenders look bad. I suppose it's because they were raised looking at sport bikes which generally don't have much of a rear fender. Anyway, you did a bang up job of changing things out and I am sure you will enjoy the bike even more.

Looks a bit too DIY brat, not too good for passengers. A rack would have been better value. Also smaller lights on the back not a good idea, wait until you get shunted in traffic.

idk what it is about motorcycles and ugly fenders. 9 times out of 10 it seems like they just kinda forgot they need somewhere to put the lights and license plate so they grab whatever plastic they have lying around. We don't have to live this way 😭. We could have nice fenders. Like look at the Royal Enfield Classic 350; the bike has many faults, but the rear is nicely painted and the lights actually look like theyre designed to be there.

Yea ugly fenders and ugly exhausts seem to be a build requirement for new bikes nowadays 😂😂😂

@@LifeOfBurch Keep in mind that a bike design has to comply with laws and regulations in all the markets they plan to sell the bike in. That fender delete would be very very illegal in my country for example. The angle of the license plate is wrong here, and you would get pulled over every time a cop spotted you, and they would give you a summons to a legal inspection to check that the bike meets regulations, as well as issuing a on the spot fine. You'd have to put the original stuff back on to pass the inspection, which would suck if you cut the cables the way you did. :P
In some markets the license plate and lights need to be behind the rear wheel, which is why a lot of bikes comes with those very long stalky weird looking extenders that puts the lights and plate way back, and it ruins the overall looks of the bike. (Just google Indian Scout Bobber EU spec, to see what a weird solution they came up with, one of the worst I ever saw.)
