  • Often overlooked by better known nameplates in the segment, Hyundai's stylish and attractive Genesis Coupe offers best-in-class V6 power, a slick-shifting 6-speed shifter, combined with track-ready brakes and suspension. Expect twin-turbo V6 power and a more luxurious cabin and sophisticated look for the next-generation in 2017.

    ....did you seriously say "An Accord coupe may be better" ...???????
    In other parts of your review, you clearly state that you buy the car because it's a sports car so who cares about XYZ but then you recommend an Accord for daily driving?
    A stiff ride is a selling point for those that want an adrenaline pumping car, not the appliance that is the Accord.

    • @inorite4553
      @inorite4553 9 лет назад +17

      Eddie Sloan The Accord coupe V6 and the Genesis Coupe 3.8 are not competitors. The Accord is a coupe version of the appliance that is the Accord line. It's about as inspiring and adrenaline inducing as an Excel Spreadsheet. The Genesis Coupe competes against the Nissan 370z, Camaro V6, Mustang V6 and sometimes the BRZ/FRS twins.
      Comparing the Accord and Genesis Coupe is idiotic because one is a sports car designed to look cool, be aggressive, make you giddy like a school girl when you mash the throttle or power through twisties while sliding out the rear tires.....and the other is an Accord.

    • @theredline
      @theredline  9 лет назад +30

      Inorite We've tested both models very thoroughly and found that the Accord Coupe works better as a daily driver from its softer ride quality, quieter interior, more spacious cabin, and comfortable seats. The Genesis coupe is more fun to drive, its the model to choose if you're going to the track, and looks/feels more like a serious sports car. However, if you don't plan to visit the track, the harsh ride, uncomfortable seats, and heavier feel make it more exhausting as a daily driver. Surprisingly, in a straight line, the two V6 coupes are pretty even. It's not a matter of which one is better, but how are you planning to use this car more and deciding for yourself which will suit your needs more.

      Accord V6 has a very preppy engine mated to an excellent manual transmission. Those two factors alone make it comparable to the Genesis Coupe.

    i've had this car for about two months now and i am slowly falling in love with it. i got the automatic :( but it is still a great car. everything that he thinks is wrong i would have to agree. with the automatic, when you put in " manual " mode it will automatically shift at 6,000 rpm. but on the other hand i can get about 27 mpg in "manual" mode over full auto. i im a die hard mustang guy but i needed something for college and wouldn't break the bank. im happy i got this over a fr-s/brz because of the power yet it handles just as good. if you are getting a car in this price range and class don't dismiss this car. you might be surprised, i know i was.

    I'd also like to point out, I've taken the Gen Coupe out on the track a few times and with traction and stability control turned off, the car handles beautifully at the limit. Turn-in is immediate with a bit of understeer but the understeer is easily mitigated with throttle controlled oversteer. You steer this around the corners with the throttle. Acceleration is brisk off the line and in the exit of the turns and easily keeps up with the 370Z Nismo but don't expect to burn them. The Genesis is heavier. If there is one failing, it's surprisingly the brakes. For the large Brembos it carries, there is quite a bit of brake fade and I did manage to cook the fluid on more than one occasion. The front needs to be redesigned to allow more airflow to the rotors.
    Other than that, it's a total blast around the track and functions fantastically as a daily driver on the garbage roads of Chicago and with a set of snow tires, does well even in the snow.

      Look at it this way. People are different and have reasons for their decisions.
      1. I absolutely LOVE Manual transmissions.
      2. I got a great deal on mine
      unfortunately it was auto. Still it doesn't take away from the cars driving dynamics (It's still fun to drive although not as involving).
      3. I own the car. Have video proof on my channel. "OwnersGen".
      4. Auto or not the complements from people still roll in 😀😉. They love the color.

      +OwnersGen Be honest how does this compared to the fr-s planning on leasing 1 or the other in january

    • @Imleocalm
      @Imleocalm 9 лет назад +2

      Lease? Unlikely, most dealers won't least them. As far as the comparison it depends on what your looking for. The looks are subjective, but the power and response (due to the power) goes to the genesis. The brz/frs doesn't have ANY highway passing power. Unless you plan on boosting or building go with the genesis. And you plan on "leasing" so go with the genesis. If you decide to buy ( because leasing is a long shot) only get a top of the line genesis or r-spec they'll hold value the best comparable to the frs/brz. Either choice is a good choice. Good luck and let me know.

    i have a hunch that the later genesis coupe models will be collector cars. Hyundai has come a long way and now have a solid following of customers because they've been on track of doing right by the customer with their awesome warranty's and reliability. They really didn't make a lot of these cars total, and considering its hyundai's first go at a sports car. These things are limited and I've had numerous people tell me " i love that car" "you're driving my dream car". I'm holding on to mine as long as possible.

    The Genesis coupe is the jack of all trades master of none type of car. It doesn't necessarily excel at one specific category. Ive always thought of this car as something you buy when you want muscle car proportions but with import characteristics. The Genesis isnt the fastest but it's quick enough. it doesn't handle amazingly but its def capable, better than most muscle cars.

No, it's not a "powerful" car but it is definitely faster then the Z is which is still good to me. That doesn't mean the car isn't fast though. So, I am financing the car, and the worst thing happened - at first I thought the car was too fast for the street and should be on a track, then after only three weeks I became use to the car and now I want something like the IS F or something with that amount of HP...it's a scary fast car but yes, I want a faster car too. That doesn't mean the Genesis isn't fast though. What year was your car?

    WHY is it that you mostly complain for the cheap, plastic, ugly design of CHEAP BUDGET CARS? WHY do you OVEREXPECT the build, design of CHEAP BUDGET CARS? WHY do you review budget cars then compare it to premium cars when you know the price difference? please remember:"you get for what you pay for, if you want premium, pay premium"

    • @nikolaivargas
      @nikolaivargas 9 лет назад +1

      it is but still, cant he just summarize that you get what you pay for, considering where the car is built, what brand is he reviewing

    • @nikolaivargas
      @nikolaivargas 9 лет назад

      what car class was the cruze in? what trim of the cruze was he reviewing? I mean, he knows that the car has cheap interior but going up a trim doesn't always mean a better interior, if you say that the features on a higher trim is overpriced, then look elswhere or buy a lower trim model then you as the owner add the feature that was overpriced by the manufacturer

    • @nikolaivargas
      @nikolaivargas 9 лет назад

      alright, but still, what brand is cruze made by? what brand is the jetta made by? how long have these two brands been doing lately? GM is getting back up again on its feet, Volkswagen is running smooth, see how the slight difference in business affect the quality and/or the fit and finish of the product?

    • @nikolaivargas
      @nikolaivargas 9 лет назад

      There's one thing I just want to point out, budget cars= plastic interiors which is so OBVIOUS, I mean we get it already, if you want cloth soft touch materials then pay for premium. In example: you buy a brand new 30$ camera, you should know that it DOES NOT have the same functions and features not even quality of a brand new 300$ DSLR camera.

    • @nikolaivargas
      @nikolaivargas 9 лет назад

      yes, it does +Eddie Sloan, but $40k is not solely priced on the assembly and parts of the car, where was the car brought in from? where was it assembled? how much is Hyundai supposed to earn per realease? Labor costs and shipping costs PLUS TAXES pushes Hyundai to reduce the add-ons for the Genesis so that the price won't be too high

    I read somewhere that the next one is actually getting the 5.0 V8 from the sedan. Fingers crossed it's still hooked to a manual.

    • @ItsJustCams
      @ItsJustCams 8 лет назад +1

      I heard that too, but from all the speculation that I gathered about the subject this is what I've put together. The "Genesis" line of cars (currently being the coupe and the Sedan) might start as it's own luxury brand kinda like how Infiniti did from Nissan, Lexus from Toyota, and Acura from Honda. The coupe might be more in the likes of the G37 coupe (keeping the Hyundai ways but not the Hyundai pricing) while the sedan might be more subtle beast in it's own right. OR... The Genesis line will stay with Hyundai as a whole, and while the coupe may receive the option for a V8 package from it's 4-door big brother, big brother might be getting a brand new monster altogether. Either way it seems the coupe is due for a V8 eventually as it's original rival was supposed to be the Camaro. And revision after revision, it finally, as a 3.8L V6 best the Camaro, Charger, and Mustang... as V6 packages as well... The next step for Hyundai should be a V8 so then the coupe can compete with the versions of the rivals people mainly concern their selves with (V8 Stangs, Camaros, etc). The only problem with that is if the "Genesis" brand becomes it's own entity as the aforementioned "Luxury" brand, then we might lose the stick shift in favor of a Dual clutch paddle shift as what most automakers do when concerned with going faster or making a car feel like less work to drive because of said luxury. We of course lose the "affordable sports car" category placing because surely a luxury V8 won't run you for the same as BRZ or Miata, but then we still have hope with whatever Hyundai is going to do with the N performance concepts... Especially that RM-16...

    • @iloverush123
      @iloverush123 8 лет назад +1

      I think that it's reasonable to expect a price increase for a new platform/V8, but I believe Hyundai will already have what it wants with the Equus and Genesis sedan, what I expect a luxury sports car would be is a similarly equipped Genesis ultimate trim possibly, with no manual option and a full interior, with pricing around $45,000. What Ford's doing with the Mustang, essentially. But, by that same token, don't forget that the Mustang GT starts at 32. I'd expect the same from the new V8 Genesis Coupe. And that GT is a hell of a lot of car for that money.

    I picked up a 2015 Base 3.8 MT for a shade under $24,000 all fees included. There are deals to be had. This review is spot-on. One thing I don't think he mentioned was the abrupt clutch take-up. You get used to it, but you might want to bring some dramamine for the salesman on the test drive. One more thing is the aftermarket support for the car. There are a surprising amount of performance parts. HOWEVER. Once you move beyond the cold-air kits, they are more expensive than equivalent Mustang/Camaro aftermarket parts. Be warned: getting your 3.8 to 400+ HP is going to be an expensive proposition... if that's your thing. A great value, strong motor, good handling (no electronic power steering!), and the best warranty in the business.

    • @theredline
      @theredline  9 лет назад +3

      Duncan McLellan Agreed on the deals to be had! Especially when you're looking at the $40,000 plus pricing on Mustang and 370Z fully loaded. For the same money as a BR-Z or FR-S, you could have this burly V6. To some people, that is very appealing.

    • @inorite4553
      @inorite4553 9 лет назад +1

      Duncan McLellan The reason the clutch is such a pain is due to the Dual Mass flywheel installed. The clutch will grab with gusto but you have to wait that split second for the springs in the flywheel to compress before power is transmitted to the driveshaft. I absolutely hate the DM flywheel.

    • @edwardgrimenstein2164
      @edwardgrimenstein2164 9 лет назад

      Inorite Thanks for the info. Are there any benefits to this set-up, or is it a cost-cutting/ durability play?

    • @edwardgrimenstein2164
      @edwardgrimenstein2164 9 лет назад

      Redline Reviews Agreed on your love for the V6. Like the 5.7 Hemi (but from the other direction), it's tucked nicely between the Mustang/Camaro V6s and the full-boat V8s in terms of power. Unfortunately, a bit closer to the V8 in MPG. I've read elsewhere that it is tuned it to run rich for longevity at the expense of MPG.

    • @inorite4553
      @inorite4553 9 лет назад

      Duncan McLellan It's a durability/reliability part and unfortunately, almost all other manufacturers use the Dual Mass flywheel as well. DM flywheels have internal springs to reduce shock transmitted to the driveshaft/wheels and vice versa. That's all fine and dandy but the added mass makes the flywheels unGodly heavy. The flywheel in the Gen coupe is upwards of 50lbs. Just so you're aware, aluminum race flywheels can be as light at 6lbs and 'street' performance flywheels average in the teens.

    For Hyundai not being in the rwd sports car market not too long I say they are doing a good job the only "sports car I can recall Hyundai having was the Tuscani which later went on to be the Tiburon. The Tiburon was a fwd though and also it didn't compete well as a sports coupe. I give Hyundai props though because their experience in the sports car market is very little and I see a bright future for their sports car in years to come. Not to mention Hyundai is noted a cheap reliable economy based car brand with a great warranty. The new genesis sedan is really making a name for itself along with eqqus as far as luxury goes and for what you get for the price with Hyundai they are definitely a car brand to look at if your not looking to break the bank or if your just looking for something unique and different

You also fail to mention that buying this car used is a great bargain and you get great handling with great power. I feel like if a car isn't "supercar fast" or "V8 fast" looking at your Camaro SS and CTS-V/ATS-V reviews, you tend to be very dismissive and just move on to the next one. Just my 2 cents.

      My Gen coupe was my second car (had my first car for one year). Its been a good car relatively. The second hand warranty is good and its very easy to drive every day plus they are pretty fun and a great car to learn driving with. Some of the bad things are they're not great on space and the person in the back seat is always going to complain. There is not a huge aftermarket for the car either. I have plenty more pros and cons but I would recommend on as a first car, Id go with the 2.0 and not the 3.8 so insurance won't be as bad

    Oooo they changed the radio and multimedia controls... SD card slot? Wonder if that is only for the map, or can you use it for music storage?

    Can I use your videos to show to my clients how good some cars are?
