    Why the hell would your review the R-Spec, which is intentionally stripped of most of the tech, to "check the tech"?

    • @iwearleatherjackets1

      Aaron Starks Because that's what they sent him. I don't think he gets to choose what he reviews.

      I thought it was helpful, im looking at an R spec but just found out it does not have the premium audio. I want the manual, but im thinking id rather take heat seats and premium audio right off the bat then pay bookoo $ that i cant finance to get audio put in the R

    The show is called CNET Car Tech. About the model selection though I think Hyundai might have only offered them the 3.8L R-Spec

    if you think the gauges are "irrelevant" you know nothing about the point of them or auto-cross, which it was built for, this isn't meant to be an everyday driver stocked full of creature comforts, this is an R-Spec sports coupe for sporty & track driving.

  • @yummy1234098
    @yummy1234098 12 лет назад +1

    the second one, the r-spec is ment for performance only. there are other trim levels that have all the bells and whistles like heated seats, full leather, navigation, lots of speakers etc. just this trim doesnt have that cause it wasnt ment for luxury it was ment for the tuner guys that want a relatively stripped down car that they can modify themselves. although this is not the base model. the base i believe has more features i think.

  • @Wimmle
    @Wimmle 12 лет назад +1

    Having driven this car I can tell you it's fantastic the one thing that lets it down is the seats they aren't quite stiff enough for track use but overall and at this price is a fantastic option

  • @AndrewBurgess
    @AndrewBurgess 11 лет назад +1

    The 2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Track model comes with all the features mentioned that the R-Spec does not. I believe all the performance options that were put into the R-Spec are also included in the Track Model, but the Track model includes all the fancy stuff like Navigation, Sunroof, Blue Link, and also the optional automatic transmission with paddle shifters. I believe the only thing the R-Spec has that the Track model does not is a back up camera, but that also may not be on either model.

    Stopped the video when he said oil temperature is irrelevant. Man clearly has no clue what he is talking about, and probably shouldn't be reviewing cars.

    • @iwearleatherjackets1
      @iwearleatherjackets1 9 лет назад +1

      DoomsdayMelody91 It kind of is. As long as my car has oil in it and it can use it, I don't care how hot it is. Maybe it only matters to car enthusiasts, or to older people, who grew up in an era when they *did* matter.

    • @DoomsdayMelody91
      @DoomsdayMelody91 9 лет назад +18

      Leo the Weirdo
      Oil temperature is extraordinarily important on any car with sporting intentions, regardless of how new or old. Pushing a cold engine is a great way to kill a motor. Or continuing to flog an engine that the oil becomes so hot that its beginning to break down? Have fun with that spun bearing. Engine oil is the lifeblood of your motor, it is something you need to be aware of especially if you let your engine rev, which I would certainly do if I had this car.

    • @iwearleatherjackets1
      @iwearleatherjackets1 9 лет назад +2

      DoomsdayMelody91 Most new cars don't require them to be warmed up before you set off. And considering how many car makers have abandoned them (oil temperature gauges), they mustn't be that important, especially since most people don't buy a car with sporting intentions.

    • @DoomsdayMelody91
      @DoomsdayMelody91 9 лет назад +12

      Leo the Weirdo
      Please think about what you are saying. No cars require that you warm them up. You can literally get into a car from the 90s or 80s, start it up and romp on it all you want. It still doesn't make it good for them. Modern engines don't alter the rules of physics or thermodynamics. When you have dissimilar temperatures things will eventually even out but your piston will heat up and expand in the cylinder bore (which will not warm as quickly thanks to the water jacket around it) further the cylinder will be contracted from its operating size so you have an expanded piston and a compressed cylinder. if it is cold enough outside oil flow will not be optimal since cold oil is thicker, meaning that it won't flow as well. So you are looking at reduced lubrication and you think it is ok to just dash to redline when it is 0 degrees outside? Remind me to never buy used from you buddy. Will this kill an engine? Probably not very quickly, but it still isn't good for it.

    • @alexsvanascini2524
      @alexsvanascini2524 9 лет назад +3

      Leo the Weirdo Due to this being the 3.8 I agree that it is irrelevant to most people. However, in the 2.0t it is necessary in order to see when the boost will kick in because before (I think) 150 degrees on the gauge, the turbo will not kick in.

    Never thought Hyundai would come out beasting in the sport coupe scene, but they are! This is a good thing though, hopefully this will push other car manufacturers to produce more potent sports cars as well!

    yes there is, the genesis coupe 3.8 has most of those more luxury features standard, but the navvy is optional of course. the 2.0t model offers most of those as options.

    Little confused about the whole proprietary adapter. I have the 2013 gen coupe 2.0T and I actualyl recommend just buying a really cheap and small 4+ gig flash drive, converting it to FAT32, and load it up with songs. Plays with zero problems in my car. Also, I say get small flash drive because I can leave it plugged in there and close that little compartment door. That set up work great for me.

    The seats are not leather, they are a leatherette bolster and headrest, just as inexpensive to make as cloth. The r-spec is designed to give performance and to keep all the fluff out.

    I have driven both also and unless your like under 5"10 and a small person the frs/brz is very cramped. the Frs also has a very stiff bumpy ride and I would only use it as a track car. Now for the Genesis coupe it has lots of room (compared to the frs) for almost any size person and rides much nicer for every day driving. So in my opinion if all your after is a track car get the frs and if you want a sporty car that can go on the track yet can be used as a daily driver get the genesis coupe.

    YOU GET NOTHING! Brian Cooley is THE best car reviewer in the world and tells it exactly how it is. At this price point the obvious flaws should be ironed out. From an engineering standpoint, why is there no meta data, why didn't they fully utilize all the screen real estate and why the fuck doesn't the most popular MP3 player fit? Brian Cooley bows to no car, he tore apart a Bentley Mulsanne and an Aston for christ sakes.

    So is the R-Spec the bottom rung of the Genesis Coupe (it doesn't sound like it), or do they think people who buy the R-Spec are only concerned with performance and don't want things like navigation? Or are those things simply not an option at all on the Genesis Coupe at any trim level (hard to believe)?

    Only part of what you're saying is correct. While GM vehicles are also using engines that Hyundai are using (before GDI at least), each of the parent companies (Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Chrysler) all contributed to created a world engine (the theta II and other variants of that). Basically each company put effort into this to help cut costs. That was back then...

  • @TulumToCancun
    @TulumToCancun 12 лет назад

    Actually he is right. If CNET wants to review the tech, they should review the Premium or Grand Touring trims with the nav, not the R-Spec, which is a stripped down car meant for driving enthusiasts who care about the drive, and not tech toys which weigh the car down and make it more expensive.

    New front end does take some time getting used to, but other than that its actually pretty neat. I hated the new front end myself, but after seeing it in person rather than pictures, it's not as bad as you guys think it is. Hell, I like it so much now, I think its way better than the previous models. However, the fake hood vents is kinda overdoing it lol. I also don't see any point of hating on a car. you're correct, and i'm also korean. the problem is the company had a big ad campaign for the super bowl a few years ago along with the genesis being 2009 north american best car of the year, and they told people it's supposed to be pronounced "hunday, like sunday!" it was certainly a marketing decision on HMUSA's part to make it easier for Americans, since difficult sounding names just provoke xenophobia in car brands from people. toyota is really doyoda as well in japanese.

    I just checked-out the Hyundai website, and now, I understand where you're coming from. The 3.8 Track is $4,250 more than the R-Spec, and for that you get: heated, powered, full-leather seats, Bluetooth, moonroof, Infinity sound system, SiriusXM, Nav, auto climate control, HID headlights, and a spoiler. Wow. Still, I think Hyundai should have gone a step further with the R-Spec: eliminate the back seats and replace the leather on the front seats with cloth (a la the Mustang Boss).

    If they do that, they'll be treading in Mustang GT and Camaro SS waters. I don't think Hyundai wants to take the fight there. Yet.
    But since they're sticking with the V6, they can avoid being unfairly flamed by haters and biased reviewers. Because in the V6 RWD category, they're being compared to other V6 RWDs like the Mustang and Camaro. And the Genesis Coupe does VERY well stacked up against those cars :)

This model was made to be performance only and all of that other stuff weighs a lot. But you can get almost the same performance and all of that awesome stuff for maybe 4k more.

  • @TurboNFRStwoK

    While according to most reviews the brz is the better looking (which is complete opinion) and feeling car, all reviews pin the base 2.0 genesis coupe as the faster car both in a straight line and around a track. So imho subaru/scion missed the mark by charging almost 30K for it. That could have EASILY been solved with an off the shelf turbo wrx or sti engine that would have added no development cost and only minor overall cost to the vehicle and would have been well worth the extra money.

  • @speedfreak127
    @speedfreak127 12 лет назад

    You can't get anything because the rspec is meant to be the track edition. As in lighter. To keep the weight down no options. It's not your luxury coupe. It's a cheaper alternative to have a car that not everyone has. Like mustangs and camaros you see them on every corner and street in the US. Genesis coupe you don't. It's more of a car for people who want to stand out and be different. Although I would rather get a 370z to go fast or dodge challenger r/t for cruising. Genesis is a good mix.

    true, but I'm no cooley fanboy. you are forgetting one thing about this dude's review. It's for the tech.That's why it's call CAR TECH. Yea base rod cars like the stripped down gt-86 onsale in Japan doesn't even have metal bumpers, but if Cooley were to review that car for Cnet, he'd gripe about the low tech and the strip down-ness even if that was the point of the car. Long story short, It's a car review focused about the technology, TECH-NO-LOGY. That's kinda the point...

    don't compare it to a camaro or mustang, those are meant to be powerful v8 beasts! if you want a good v6 go for the 370z nismo or the expensive r35

    he didn't do a very good job explaining. this particular model (R-Spec) cannot be optioned with the LCD Nav Screen, however it can be optioned on other models. The R-Spec is designed for those who want to track their cars or those who want to modify them. So Hyundai lowers the price a bit and removes some of the luxuries.

    Right, because the 370Z, G37 and Genesis are clearly known for their big-block V8 engines.
    These are not muscle cars.

    You're of Japanese descent, lol.
    Korea in less than 50 years spiked up in science much faster, and quickly excelled.
    With that said, Korean also jumped into the Worldwide G20, top twenty countries, in such a small period of time.
    Given that period of time, any country with the willpower can and will surpass countries that are not growing as fast.

    I test drove an R-Spec. The damn clutch has a too-narrow engagement point which means it's too easy to stall it out. All the more reason to buy the automatic.

    The FRS may very well be a better car in terms of balance and chassis, but that doesnt mean much when you are going light to light and getting beaten by your buddies crappy Integra R with "v-tec". I would have to put down an addittional 3-5k on the BRZ/FRS to bring the power I expected it to come with. How do you put a WRX engine in and forget the turbo? Direct injection or not the stock power should be where the STI version is 250hp, and top model should be 289-305hp. Getting beaten by Honda,no
