@@cgletts So does your writing.
I own a 2013 Genesis 5.0 R-Spec. Bought it with 50,000 miles. It now has 295,000 miles on it. Regular maintenance and the only thing I've had to replace is the Alternator. The gears on my mirrors went out but I'll fix that soon enough. Best car I've ever owned and the leather is still in great condition.
Wow that's amazing I'm looking to get a 2012 r spec.
@LXRD-DiViNE-SUPREME-ELOHIM♤ Yes sir. 315,000 miles now. Still running strong. It's been a good car to me. I drive mainly highway.
@@nathandale2738 woah that's phenomenal. Would you say the 3.8 is as reliable? And thanks for answering my questions.
@LXRD-DiViNE-SUPREME-ELOHIM♤ That I don't know. But I don't see why it wouldn't be. The Genesis in my opinion is just a well made car. A/C is still working great. Never had any problems with my windows, starter or coil packs. Maybe I'm lucky but it's just been a good car.
@@nathandale2738 Man that's awesome glad to see you got your money's worth. Once again thank you. Have a great evening. Take care.
Honestly these Genesis models have been really reliable especially the V8 models. Definitely more reliable then a German competitors
Rhonda Carter NO
Everything is.
@Rhonda Carter hyundai/kia is best
Only buy hyundai/kia for stress-free life👍👍
They are pretty reliable but Only problem is from 2012 and up they put there own built 8 speed trans and it downshifts terrible just like new toyotas and Lexus 8 speeds I have a 2012 4.6 Genesis with 118k and the trans has been replaced at 85k and it still downshifts terrible now I need to go back again
Scotty also traded his 94 Celica for a newer Pt Cruiser
😂😂
jay c he traded his 94 Celica for a 2013 Nissan Altima 🤣🤣
PT Bruiser
Lmao
With a dent, hopefully!
The answer is no, he didn't
Why change the Lexus with conventional suspension vs an air suspension that costs a fortune to fix!
Hyundai, kia and genesis are all ok cars till 100k kms. after that they start falling apart like clockwork. like a planned obsolescence is built in these cars
@@lordjaashin Everyone says the same! The first Hyundai's early 90's, they lasted many years, but falling apart piece by piece! Buy it new; then dumped before the 100k or 10 years before the warranty is over. Who can fight the Toyota lifetime warranty?
@@lordjaashin not true in my experience, I've had 2. Current one has 100kms and the other had 260kms
@@lordjaashin My sister's 2011 Kia has 230k miles still running strong. I drove that car for a few days while my almost brand new Audi was in a shop for repair. I purchased Audi after my 2008 highlander blew its engine at 80k miles. I am planning to trade in Audi for Kia Stinger as they seem more reliable
I love my 2014 3.8. Absolutely no issues with it at all. Best car I've ever owned.
How's the car been now ?
Update: I bought one in September in 2021, I love it to death
The 5.0 R spec is ridiculous
The one in the video has been abused. I'd bet lack of oil changes and some other maintenance has been deferred. I have a '12 with 108k on and it runs like a top and looks new. I don't what the guy did to the interior but it looks awful.
@@ej2659 I agree man. I get on mine hard sometimes but never to the point I'm damaging it.
2013 Hyundai Genesis owner here. Purchased in 2015 with 35k on the clock. Fast forward to today and I have 130k miles and I have only had 1 repair to date (antilock brake servo manifold) - replaced with used part for around $100 and $30 worth of brake fluid. Mobile 1 oil, factory Hyundai oil filters, air filter, tires and recently, a new battery due to age. One of the BEST undervalued cars currently on the market. It's also a dead ringer for a late 2000's S-class Mercedes Benz. In 2015, I paid $19,500 which was WAY less than half price from the sticker.
How is it holding up? What trim level did you get? V6? V8?
Hows it going? Any major repiaes or thing we should look out for

@@h8h81 nice! I have a 2013 with 185.
What year is yours?
I have a 2013 Genesis 2013 3.8 Sedan with 185,000 miles. I bought it used with 36,0000 miles. I had to replace the driver side window regulator and the fuel gage sensor went bad. Both went bad at around 183,000. The Hyundai Genesis has treated me very well.
1000% recommend my genesis. Bought it with 71k mi, now has 95k mi with absolutely no issues. Smooth ride quality, comfortable seats, great power.
I think with the car that Scotty reviewed was not in great condition because it was the first year of the refreshed engine with GDI
What year is yours?
@@chepzgaming5977 I had a 2011 and now I have a 2010. The 2011 is with my parents. I’d recommend 2009-2011 before the 2012 update. The transmissions aren’t very reliable after that
@@saratc660 oh man. I just saw a real nice 2012 today was thinking about going to check it out. Now I’m not so sure 🙁
@@chepzgaming5977 yeah I hate to say it but I’d avoid it. The 2012 is the first year of GDI and first year of the new 8-speed Hyundai made transmission. Yes it’s faster and yes it drives better but it’s not as reliable as it hasn’t been around long enough to work out the flaws. 2009-2011 engines are multi port engines and are simpler. The transmission options are an Aisin (Toyota) transmission and a ZF 6-speed. Both are reliable and there are numerous people in forums with over 200k miles. Haven’t seen many after that
Scotty, my 2009 Genesis 3.8. Sedan has 145k miles and runs 100% like New! Best value in used cars if you can deal with rear drive.
There great cars! I have a 2012 Hyundai Accent with 200k miles still runs like new
I have a 2010 Hyundai Genesis my only problem is the dashboard is cheaply made, mine is always covered but it still cracked. Good car otherwise.
Mine has 134k. Runs like brand new.
My 2010 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 dashboard cracked too and it's always covered the dashboard are cheaply made but runs good 109.000 miles.
Hyundai vehicles are made cheaply I found out that some Hyundai cars are made good depending of the guys putting the motors together lol
The Genesis is pretty nice actually. Nothing wrong with choosing one over a Lexus or any other brand really.
If bought new, you save a big bundle if used, it has to be with lower miles!
Unless you want it to last. GDI is bad news. I'm surprised he praised it. I wouldn't step 10 feet with in this thing.
@@Strokin383 its a kind of new Technology they'll improve it!
Quan? Is you white but asian?
@@Strokin383 umm honda engines are gdi also
Easy fix! Check the variable valve control solenoid in bank 1 and the wiring which leads around hot parts of the engine. Those things are notoriously bad in these cars. $100 part and takes 20 min. Idles smooth like a champ again. Oh yeah, tell him to change the oil more often with those GDI, the small passages of these valves get easily clogged.
Have several friends who have bought Genesis vehicles, they all seem to be very happy with them. Lexus is also an excellent product if you don’t mind spending a little more.
ALOT more
I’m def one of them. I have a V6 and a V8, both are excellent. The V8 runs smoother and has been a better vehicle. Easily one of my favorites I’ve ever owned
@@saratc660It's honestly such a damn shame they never offered the genesis coupe with the v8 found in the sedan. Would have been a genuine mustang competitor.
Last time I was this early Scotty still recommended modern Toyota’s!
I work at a gas station and I had a guy role through with a '99 Tiburon with over 300000 miles on it, and he said it was still running like a clock.
I am not buying that the cams have worn out even a little after 100 k, more likely a dirty intake or valves being a direct injection engine, clean and fix the problem I suspect.
I love my 2011 Genesis 3.8! Had her since new and she only has 91k now. It's the old port injected engine that tends to hold up better over time. Plus, the pre-2012 3.8 models use Aisin (Toyota) 6 speed transmissions. These are great, reliable vehicles for a great price if you find the right one.
Have had my Genesis for 5+ years and have over 140,000 miles on it. Trouble free ownership since I bought it. Also does some pretty good burnouts and keeps up with a few supercars 😉
Is the engine in today's model exactly like yours? Or does the new one have a GDI engine while yours may have port injection? That could make a big difference on maintenance cost.
Didn't expect to see you here! Love your videos man!
Wow, I'm thinking of getting a 2016 3.8L V6, do you think I can get 200,000 miles out of it?
@@trulux8395 too late but yes. I see many genesis selling that have over 200k miles on them
I’m going to maybe get one this week for 20,988. It has 45,000 miles on it. It’s a 2016. Pretty sure no warranty because of it being used. I’m worried it will have probalems.
You can't beat a Lexus for comfort, quality and return on cost. I used to look at lower cost cars, but when my wife bought a Lexus, it changed the way I looked at cars. We had a great comfortable ride, it was fast enough, lots of room, and very little maintenance costs - just so reliable - she needed that as a nurse who visits patients at their homes. When patients are dying, their families really don't want an excuse for a non visit because of a broken down car - her RX has not let her down and many of her fellow nurses own RX's - just so dependable in the medical field.
$300 honda accord bought with 300k now it has 450kmiles on it. $2500 tiburon 300kmi I bought it at 125kmi. I switch between cars. I want a new car but if it breaks all the electronics seems like alot.
I test drove one of these back around 2009. I was at the dealership looking at the Accent, but commented on the beautiful Genesis and asked the salesman about it. He was bored, so we took it for a test drive. What a nice car! I'm glad to hear owners are happy with theirs and reliability is proving to be very good overall.

@Matthew Aniston Have you ever owned one?? Do you know anyone with one? I do and they are very happy long time owners. My cousin has a 2012 with 140k miles and zero issues. You do know Scotty is a little dated when it comes to Korean cars
@Matthew Aniston That is true. My wife has a 2017 Kia Optima and it comes with the bells and whistles for a fraction of the price of other vehicles in its class where you'd pay extra. It had a recall for the knock sensor but dealership took care of that no problem. I drive a Honda so I'm not a hater.
@Matthew Aniston I watched the video. He evaluates the car and concludes impressionable marks on it. At 4:36 he displays no fault codes on the screen and claims it is in pretty good shape. At 5:00 he says they are good cars. At 5:38 he says despite the slightly worn cams the transmission runs smooth, the suspension is in excellent shape and that the cars have evolved a very long way. He insists this is a fast, comfortable, and a cross-country car. He appears to hold the vehicle in high estimation; not at the level of Lexus yet, but good. "They're not reliable," is your claim, not his.

Scotty, you should’ve asked the owner how often did he change the oil in his Genesis. If it was extended periods, like all manufacturers seem to do these days, it might explain the camshaft wear.
I think Hyundai engineering is the cause.

That is probably going to be my next car. I have a really stiff but fast BMW right now. Just a bavk breaker but a blast to drive. But I need comfort with power now. Been waiting for them to upgrade that Hyundai display in the middle.
Dartman101 I have a 2012 V6 red Premium with 152 000 kms. I’m the original owner. My interior has none of the abuse of the one in the video and it’s the same light colour. No shaking at idle or when running. Acceleration and passing are effortless. Changed my own spark plugs (NGK ruthenium) and have taken to changing the oil and filter myself every 6000 kms. Use conventional which is what they used at the dealership. Considering switching to high mileage oil. Both engine and transmission seem as good as new. Amazing fuel economy considering the amount of power. May go to 200 000 kms before considering replacing. PS: I live in a Canada.
I’ll never be able to unHear Scotty pronouncing Hyundai
🤷♂️🤨
This caught my eye as I just bought a 36K 2016 Hyundai Genesis - and the video got me a little concerned. My brief research came up with the (complicated) OCV oil control valve as a frequent contributor to rough idle and variable valve timing issues. Also mentioned using the Hyundai oil filter as not all aftermarket filters provide the correct flow and that will affect the OCV operation. Not for one second suggesting that it isn't wear, 'cause I'm not smart enough to have any opinion.
I have the same exact car , color included, 2012, just 42k miles, ( I live in a small place, and use my Wife's Audi for intercity commute) and the number of days my Hyundai Genesis spent with dealer is 0 days. I rest my case.

Scotty, you said you dont need a V8. My 130K V8 Genesis doesnt have these problems...what it does have is 429hp. With 2 extra cylinders, cam lobes are used a lot less over that kind of mileage.
I love these cars especially the first-gen. Genesis. A few years ago my aunt had a fully loaded 2011 Genesis with the 3.8. Black on black. What I remember most about it is how WHISPER quiet the interior was. The rear seats were very comfortable. Very good build quality and easily competes with a Lexus or Mercedes. Now she has a loaded 2015 which also has the 3.8. I thought it was peppy after driving it one time. My uncle (her husband) has a fully loaded 2013 Santa Fe Sport. They both love their Hyundais and haven't had any issues with them. This led me to buy my 2019 Tucson Se. Hyundai's are great cars and a great value when you buy them slightly used.
Pushing 240k miles on my 2010 genesis coupe still runs smooth has a shaky idle but heard they were like that out of the gate, I've only performed maintenance and replaced a few suspension parts I've kept the oil changed I've had it 2 years and hope I have many more

What Scotty ALWAYS misses is how much Kia's and Hyundai's have been improving and continue to improve. That's the big difference. Other car companies are more or less static. Hyundai and Kia's are actively improving and have been getting significantly better and better even in the last 5 years. This is a 2012 Genesis. I love you Scotty you really know your stuff.
Little known fact, Hyundai manufactures the Genesis at it's Montgomery Alabama plant as well.
You Rock!
There are a few notes of special interest regarding the Hyundai Genesis. (1) Original owners were mostly lessors and usually (according to my multiple dealership contacts in California and Nevada) did not change their oil regularly - or otherwise! With all of the dirt and smoke from fires, etc., over the years, and even just plain wear and tear, this induced a lot of unnecessary cam lobe wear and scarring. When buying a used one with no service history, a warranty of some significance, like 5-years parts and labor, is really important. (2) There has been a TSB issued (technical service bulletin for the non-mechanics reading) about a software and sensor change for the 2012 Hyundai 3.8L DOHC GDI 333HP engine with 8-spd Shiftronic transmission that changed the transmission behavior. The original transmission programming resulted in harsh shift up and down, manual or fully automatic. The new software has this trans shifting smooth as… well, smooth. This from personal experience with my 2012 3.8L Sedan that just got the shift TSB fix a week ago. One more thing: (3) These cars are notorious for being difficult to gas up due to the delivery valves constant shutting off. This, of course, is from the fuel air canister being filled with fuel by people filling and then trying to "top off" the tank. If your audience has one (some) like that, replacing the canister is the fix.
Wth that guy drove from New York? I see current inspection and registration sticker!

Well they are good cars for the money. May be if you change the oil more often than it states, may be the cams would last longer?
2009-2010 3.8L Auto Transmission use a 5-Speed AISIN may look at those, but watch for valve carbonation due to GDI
On that Hyundai Genesis I believe that is the 3.8 l v6.
that particular engine used to be known for having issues with timing chain adjuster failures.
if there's a little bit too much slop in the chain it could also cause a slight wiggle in the VVT system.
You also might check to see if this may be simply normal for this engine perhaps this system is not as stable as others or operates on a different principle.
Slight vibration at idle you could also check coils wires plugs and fuel injectors that tends to be aware those things show up the most.
Did I Just Trade My Lexus for a 94' Celica? You Damn-Skippy I did!
Great picture of Jim Morrison. Probably from late summer of 1967, just after "Light My Fire" went #1.
I've got 5 bucks that says the erratic valve timing is due to way, way over extended oil change intervals.
Excellent point friend.
@@NovaResource I have seen it too. A Mercedes SUV driven in town only, the engine oil never changed. With 35,000 miles on it, the oil sludge had completely stopped up the valleys in the paper cartridge oil filter. This was in 2003. The engine burned oil badly too. All in 3 years and 35,000 miles. Hard to imagine but I seen it myself.
True story. Hyundai owners don't change the oil. Ever. They just let the engine get sludged to hell. It's the Hyundai way.
So if a Lexus goes 400k miles with no major issues and you paid 30k for it used and a Genesis you paid 15k for went 250k miles with no major issues which car is the better value 🤔
Check the spark plugs and do a throttle body cleaning. See if that helps. If not You’ll have to pull the intake n clean the valves/injectors. I’ll bet it’s loaded with carbon.
So gooood!!! Thank you for sharing this!!!❤🙌🏿
Scotty: "Buy a Lexus. Do not get crappy European cars".
Me: *Buys an Alfa Romeo*
Scotty: "You disappoint me...."
Rip
If you buy an alfa get ready to rev your engine out da HOOD!..
I aint got nothing aginst italian cars. I live in Europe i see so many of then everyday. I even see 1 inside everyday. And u know what? It drives beautiful.
But I do like all the jokes. Since they came from ppl Who haven't driven one before
You poor soul
@@Riddle6EOS Mostly unreliable after 6 or 7 years besides some like 300E 90's great reliability there! But buy a CLS 500 uff better have a bundle of money to spend! But they are beautiful cars! But anything breaks get 2000.00 USD to fix it! Same with BMW and Audi! If they made reliable cars they have a big secondary parts and resale market like Lexus Toyota and Fords trucks do have!
Worn camshafts @102k mi.......recent owner poorly maintained the vehicle. Lack of oil changes possibly. Engine gonna have more issues coming
Yeah well basically the difference of Hyundais even the more recent reliable ones is if you don't maintain them right they will wear as a toyota or honda engine since they been around at least 40-50 years before Hyundai even started will last longer even with changing oil late cause those engines been made longer but man has Hyundai improved! They definitely are right behind Toyota and mazda for reliability
I love my 2010 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Sedan. it's at 168,000 miles and still such a smooth ride.
... and of course at the end of the day, Scotty’s still promoting Toyota and Lexus! Love your channel Scotty!
Hyundai is pronounced like Sunday.... more specifically Hun-Day
First... NO you didnt
Great video , thank you Scotty
Scotty, just sold my 02 Lexus SC 430 and bought a 14 Hyundai Equus Ultimate. 50k miles. Wow. What a car. V8 429 HP. Love, love, love it! Thought I was really gonna miss my Lexus. Nope. It was a great car too!
Thanks for your show!
At 4:20:
Scotty: "it's a smooth ride, just like my wife-"
Me: "Wait, what?"
Scotty;"-Wife's Lexus."
Me: "Oh, okay."
😂
I can’t believe the state of the interior after 100k
No kidding! The owner must be a really sweaty guy.
Yep. Germans make much better interiors.
I have a used 2012 Hyundai i30 1.4 CRDi for over 4 years now, 180k km on the clock. I'm really impressed how great it holds up, changing nothing but some regular wearable items like brakes, windshield wipers and light bulbs (Of course, regular maintenance like oil, oil filter and air filter change). They are far from luxury cars, and I don't need luxury, I need utility, a dependabe tool. And I can tell you this brand has very dependable and even nice looking vehicles that also offer great value for your money.
If you want luxury, I understand that, buy some german money pit and enjoy it, because that's what makes you happy. But If you want a day-to-day workhorse which will not break your bank account, I can honestly recommend Hyundai/KIA. They really did improve a lot from those old washing-machines that Scotty mentioned.
It isn’t a luxury? Heated and cooled driver seat, heated back seats, sunroof, 300+ hp, backup camera and parking assistance etc. how is this not luxury for a car that’s made 2009-2012? I’m not sure what you consider luxury
I love mine-it’s 4 wheel drive and it’s an 8....ITS A BEAST!
My dad has a '13 w the V8. That is a screaming car actually !! Pretty much a Q-Ship.
the best Hyundai I have ever driven is the 2006 Hyundai azera ,even though I bought the genesis but I still love the azera, luxurious and best sound system ever from infiniti
How is lexicon sounsystem in genesis?
@@aliijunas the lexicon sound super great one of the best ...
Hi Scotty, should I get used Toyota 4runner SR5 or Lexus NX200t (~$20K) ? Lexus is turbo charged and I am worried it's not as reliable, but I like the luxury feel, better MPG, and it is slightly cheaper used.
Hey Scotty when I quit construction I'm going to come over to work for you👍👍👍
How much would it have been to fix the genesis? I was really waiting to hear that part, especially since I’m looking at a few right now :/.
Look up “cost to own (car here)”. Sorry for being a year late
The way things are going with Honda and Toyota recently you might be recommending Genesis and Kia's in the future their Quality has certainly improved in the past years! :)
If you like engines blowing up about 60,000 miles
Haha no way. Even in the days of Samurais, Japan is superior.
Not lately!!
@@OffTheBeatenPath_ that's the thing, even though they certainly improving overall, you have to be careful to not get one of the models with faulty engines.
I have 3 friends with kias that blew their engines. 1 Kia Soul, 2 Kia sorrento
Nice job scotty! You can still get in the trunk of your celica👌
I had a 2016 Hyundai Genesis, it would lose vacuum every once in awhile, and cause high rpm at idle. Traded that sucker in for a Ford Ranger. Hopefully will work better.
I love those Hyundai Genesis they are great cars, I'm buying the R-spec model before this year is over with!
Chevy Lamar jus pay attention to the trans they are terrible
The early models I heard that had transmission issue, but that wasn't a common thing for those cars!
Petion for scotty to vlog his rides more:

Shout out from NY, I See them reg and inspection tag lol. Stay safe while the world is burning down Scotty
Scotty can conclude about ONE's car brand reliability based on a single used car's engine. That is amazing. I wonder why he was not voted the best auto mechanic in the world?
FYI..I have a 2013 3.8L with 254k miles (407k km) and still going strong.
YO!! really looking forward to getting a genesis in my area. Hope fully with low mileage. AWESOME to hear yours has lasted this long. please tell me what kind of problems you have had mechanically and or electronically that you have had to fix/replace !! super stoked yours has lasted this long. really looking forward to getting mine soon.
Someone was racing down my street in a genesis.
MAD MADOC MAN maybe it was me 👺
Was he talking to himself and flailing both of his arms around?
Phuong Pham 😭😭😭😭
R spec was pretty fast tho
That's an older genesis wouldnt compare to the new ones.
The VVEL mechanism on the intake camshaft of my 370Z is very intricate and places a very heavy strain on the oil, with high contact pressures and temperatures. Nissan tried to counteract this by putting a low friction DLC(diamond like carbon coating) on the valvetrain parts and recommending a high concentration molybdenum ester oil. I use a 3K mile oil change interval, as I've seen on used oil analysis reports where this valvetrain will shear the 5W 30 oil to a 20 weight by 3K miles. My recommendation to anybody with one of these newer cars with these intricate variable valve lift and timing mechanisms in their valvetrains is to use a high-quality synthetic-based oil with good extreme pressure(EP) boundary layer additives that will minimize the wear of the base metal. These EP additives will form a sacrificial layer on the metal to protect it during a cold start-up before there is good oil flow to the top of the engine and for when the engine is under a heavy load with the oil thinned out due to high temperatures. I can only imagine the situation being worse with these smaller displacement turbo engines with their sizzlingly high oil temps.
Hey Scotty! I have a question and I hope you can answer.
I have a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer es, manual transmission. The previous owner installed a Frantz bypass oil filter. Are those things necessary? Is it a big job to have them removed?
Thank you.
Scotty, since when are you working in NY (the registration and inspection stickers)?
I've seen these around town and I must say they are handsome cars. I wouldn't mind owning one, but for the right price. Also, long term reliability is still up in the air.
They have been going for nearly a decade (Genesis) and they have held up well. I can't comment on the 2018 and newer but the older ones are solid.
Trust me. I'm a 2nd owner of the 2012 3.8 premium. I have 207k miles with zerrrrrrrro issues. All highway miles. The car is well balanced. The ZF transmission is built in SC and is also used in BMWS. The maintenance on the car is low. It is a steal. Trust. I know I keep talking about it but it is the best car I ever owned. Certified pre-owned again no issues none. Just change oil, change plugs, no timing belt to worry about. Smile wash the car and be happy
Finally Scotty! You listened to me. Welcome to the Korean finest. The 2020 models are to die for.
@@titanjake8640 Korea is one of the best car makers. Long gone are the days of the Hyundai Pony and Stellar haha
These cars r so underrated! My 2011 is a pleasure to own and drive, whether i'm cruising on the highway or flogging it on the backroads. The 2009-2011 3.8s use Aisin (toyota) 6spd transmissions. Plus the non-gdi engines used pre 2011 are even more reliable than the gdi ones. A used gen is a steal if you ask me.
Hi Scotty , i am considering a 2015 / 2016 Hyundai Equus . No particular car picked out.
Are they good cars or does your genesis video answer the question. Keep the videos coming , Martin
