  • Florida man faces trial for a catastrophic school shooting, but before he does, he must face jurors for a battery case. Prosecutors say that’s Parkland School Shooter, 23, on footage rushing a Broward County jail guard in November 2018. Jury selection is scheduled to start Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 9:30 a.m. ET. Opening statements are scheduled for Oct. 18.
The Shooter is the person facing 17 counts of first-degree murder, and 17 counts of attempted first-degree murder for opening fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida on Valentine’s Day 2018. Then 19, he was a former student there. While awaiting trial at the Broward County Jail, he attacked one of the guards, say, prosecutors. In the Nov. 13, 2018 incident, the guard told him not to drag his sandals on the floor, prosecutors said. The Shooter flipped him off, and, as clear from the video, rushed him and struck him. He initially had the upper hand, but the guard regained control, and The Shooter eventually gave up.
17 people died in the high school shooting: 14-year-old student Alyssa Alhadeff, 35-year-old teacher Scott Beigel, 14-year-old student Martin Duque Anguiano, 17-year-old student Nicholas Dworet, 37-year-old assistant football coach Aaron Feis, 14-year-old student Jaime Guttenberg, 49-year-old athletic director Christopher Hixon, 15-year-old student Luke Hoyer, 14-year-old student Cara Loughran, 14-year-old student Gina Montalto, 17-year-old student Joaquin Oliver, 14-year-old student Alaina Petty, 18-year-old student Meadow Pollack, 17-year-old student Helena Ramsay, 14-year-old student Alexander Schachter, 16-year-old student Carmen Schentrup, and 15-year-old student Peter Wang.
Officials arrested The Shooter shortly after. Interview footage showed him insisting a voice in his head told him to carry out the shooting. He called it the “Demon.”
“Personally, I think you’re using the demon as an excuse,” said Broward County Sheriff’s Detective John Curcio.
The Shooter’s defense has not disputed that he is responsible. They have been trying to save him from the death penalty.

I'm a seasoned true crime fan and I'm telling you this case has given me literal nightmares, my true crime days might even be over after this overdose of horror.... I don't think there is any doubt he will get the death penalty and in this particular case, I think it's necessary for all thos families to have any sense of justice and try to move on finally. The fact he is still around and building 12 has been preserved intact for 4 years for the purpose of this trial, it's like all these people have been frozen in time with it. They need to put this guy down and demolish that building once and for all so these parents can have a chance for closure.

There are a ton of comments about the families “ HAVING to sit in the courtroom with the monster…” but the reality is that they don’t HAVE to…they have chosen to be there to represent their loved ones who were hunted down and massacred by this evil psychopath ( he actually videotaped himself saying he wanted to kill 20 people and everyone would hear his name on the news) but they don’t HAVE to be there- which makes their decision to be there even more courageous….that is my point. I understand their NEED to be there and I think they are all beyond brave to be there, especially the ones who opt to stay during the Medical Examiners testimony…that must be incredible torture and it’s taken over 4 years to get to this point….this must be reopening the deeply painful reminders of that day that I’m sure they have all worked hard to get past….having lost a daughter myself almost 19 years ago I can honestly say that some days I cry and feel awful gut wrenching pain and some days I’m okay….many of these parents and students have used their grief to work hard to get gun laws changed despite hitting wall after wall….5 days before Uvalde, which is only an hour and half from us, I was picking up my daughters from school and we went into full lockdown and as I stood in a darkened silent hallway with other parents we were told there were two armed men on the campus….it was the most terrifying 45 minutes of my life as my daughters texted me they were blocking the door with bookshelves and desks…and hiding in a corner…..the Principal of the high school, with over 4000 students stood beside me in that dark hallway apologizing to us because he “had never experienced this before and didn’t know what he should be doing…” that was kind of concerning to me…..but then it was changed to one gunman and then just like that, lights went on and we were told it was over and safe….we never actually found out what happened but I was terrified for my daughters….I can’t even begin to imagine what these families, teachers, and the whole community went through that day…..and honestly-if the tragedy of Sandy Hook didn’t change any gun laws…I’m afraid nothing will.

I sat in on a murder trail in Broward County, same courthouse, years ago as a juror. Nothing as horrific as this but yes you have to sit through all of it without showing emotion. The autopsy photo images stay with you for a long time. Along with the physical evidence like the clothing the victim was wearing, etc. You see all of it. They even left all the evidence with us to review as we deliberated. No they don't offer you any counseling. You were called upon and agreed to do a civic duty no matter how difficult (at least that's what they tell you). During jury selection they do ask potential jurors questions like would you be able to handle objectively the presentation of all the evidence. Some people said that they couldn't handle seeing blood as a way of getting out of being selected. I remember the judge after several people tried to use that as an excuse said that it wouldn't automatically excuse you especially since they don't disclose in detail exactly what the case is about. I remember after reaching our guilty verdict all the emotions of what I/we the jurors went through just hit me. There were huge news cameras in the courtroom as the verdict was read. When we were dismissed and left the courtroom the press surrounded us in the hallway trying to get a comment. We all huddled together and made our way out to the elevator. I went to my job which was close by after we were dismissed and just broke down with a coworker because I was finally able to discuss the case. Most of the people close to me knew what case I was on because it did get local news coverage but no one approached me about it until after. A few years later I got called in for jury duty a second time. When I was interviewed for another trial they asked if you've ever served before and if you were able to reach a verdict. I told them yes I did and honestly said I could not emotionally handle being put on another jury case like that again. I got dismissed from one trial selection but ended up being selected for a drug case that same day. I've been picked to sit on a jury every single time I had to report for jury duty. As bad as the gorry details were what was most upsetting was seeing the victims family. The pain and despair they suffered through each day. I still remember the cries from both the victim's and the murderer's (her husband) family when the word GUILTY was read. The experience is nothing like what you see in movies and television. My heart and prayers go out to the families and friends of all the victims and the those brave jurors.

@@dennmod24 the meds are to keep him "calm" so he isn't disrupting the court and causing a scene. If he were to do those things, the bailiffs would have to drag him away which in turn would delay the trial because he has to be able to be there and participate in his defense. Otherwise we would have a mistrial and that wouldn't be fair to the families and victims to have it delayed and dragged out longer.

I understand this is the penalty phase of the trial, but I'm slightly annoyed with law enforcement officers showing up half prepared to testify. There were 17 murder victims in total throughout the building . If you were assigned only a portion of the crime scene to investigate, it doesn't seem too much to ask for you to be able to correctly identify the names of the deceased in your sector. The Guttenbergs seem to be receiving insult upon injury, between the previous testimony of Jamie's 4th period teacher and Sergeant Crespo on the stand here.

That's a shame. I rely on them as well (hard of hearing). I wonder if they have an IG or Twitter with open DMs to ask them? There is a new live on today, probably tomorrow, maybe ask during live if they can turn them on? Sorry about that.

I guess the prosecution isn't allowed to see any more pictures of the injuries of these kids that were shot. Really upsets me that the jury doesn't get to see the injuries of all the victims and hear about the disabilities they are left with
