Family members of those killed in the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School addressed the jury at the sentencing trial for Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz on Tuesday. The jury will determine whether Cruz is sentenced to the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Luke’s mom 😭 I’m in tears. The moment she brought up the memory of kissing him goodnight at 5 years old and him wiping it off to get another one broke me. I have babies of my own and I can’t imagine the pain she and all the other families are going through. My heart breaks.
I'm watching every minute of this victim statements video. It's really not much but least I can do to honor the victims. RIP to all the victims.
This guy is a murderer that killed unarmed children and he attacked a prison guard. How in the world can they let him sit next to two women without being at least hand cuffed?
Such a good point. On another note, if I were those defensive attorneys, I would have to take 10 hour showers every evening just to feel cleansed of the evil I would feel all over me simply from having to sit next to that monster all day.

How can a person do this? It’s impossible not to be in tears hearing these victim’s statements. All those people either dead or injured due to one person’s actions. This is one of the saddest cases I’ve seen on here. RIP to the victims who lost their lives and well wishes for the survivors of this tragic event.
You know the case is really bad, when the defense attorney cries hearing the victim impact statements.
There is such a beautiful bond between the victim’s families.

These statements are heart wrenching. Can't even or ever fathom the pain, and suffering these families are going through. My heart is with them.
I don't understand why the parents didn't give ths statements themselves? They hired someone to do it for them.
@@iamwhoiam7887 I think we need to really take the time to TRY and understand how gut wrenching it must be for them to relive the worst day of their lives. People handle grief differently, and maybe for some seeing the individual whom killed their loved one is just too much to bare.

i dont understand how that whole court room is in tears - I'd be bawling my eyes out. The staff/attorneys/jurors,how are they so calm? When someone cries - i cry. I supposed their used to it being in courts, but I wouldnt be able to contain my emotions

Or perhaps not being treated with kindness was the exact reason he felt compelled to inflict such horrors. We repeatedly see the devastating results of bullying and degradation, and we still can’t understand that responding to hatred with more hatred doesn’t solve anything. When we wake up and realize that the root of all his rage and cruelty was the lack of being loved and the feeling of utter loneliness we may actually start to move in the direction of stopping these atrocities from happening. This is not a problem that will go away on its own, when people have nothing to lose they are capable of unimaginable things. He is clearly one of those people.
He said in a video people were going to know who he was. He said he hated people. You won’t see any expression of remorse, regret or sadness because he got what he wanted.
Because he is numb, he cant feel even if he wanted to. He suffered so much trauma that he has disconnected himslef from himsel and his emotions, even a blind man can see this.

I can’t stop looking at the defense lawyer that has to sit next to the mass murderer. She is extremely emotional, and often turns her back to him. She can’t stop crying, and is scooting farther and farther away from the monster she has been hired to defend. She has a mountain of tissues in front of her. I wonder if she’ll be back tomorrow. 😢

When defense attorney struggles to maintain professional demeanor, but cries instead during testimony of parents, you know it’s personal.
It's tough on them as well. Professionalism requires them to give proper representation to even the worst of the worst criminals.

I feel their pain. I can't stop crying too. I am wondering: What is the worst - the death penalty or a lifetime in prison? My son thinks a lifetime in prison is the worse. I disagree with him.

Not only do we not have a handle on this, we actually moved away from protecting kids by some schools removing school resource officers because they were triggering to some groups of people. We have security guards at every bank but we don't have for schools.

And still the usa has learned nothing from this case. You can learn a lot from other contries. First ban guns, ban the death penalty, ban violent war computer games and give your teens meaning beyond consumerism and status. Charged with 17 counts, am I correct in assuming that all it would take is a unanimous verdict of "death" on any one of the 17 counts, such that even if all the other counts were voted life, Cruz would nonetheless be put to death?

Listening to all these families has reduced me to a sobbing mess. Then seeing him sitting there with not an ounce of emotion makes me so angry. I think death is too quick for him he needs to live a long and tortured life. Let him live with the street justice that other inmates can dish out best for a long time

As depressing and heartbreaking as it is, I am taking the time to listen to all of the victim impact statements to honour the victims (which includes the victim's families). They have spent hours, days, weeks, months and years preparing their statements and summoning the courage to speak. I just wish that something good can come of this horrendous tragedy by curtailing the access to guns that Americans just don't seem to want to give up despite these tragedies being so common in the US. My thoughts are with the families and I commend you on your courage.

I am so very happy the families of these murdered young people and adults, on the verge of adulthood, got to make Impact Statements! Not to resolve their grief, for that will never dissipate, but to give testimony to all the world that they too were part of a family, a community, a nation that and will be always a loss. I hope the defense team suffered through every word wondering what team they would be on if their child, husband were murdered. For Melissa McNeill, who fold her hands, and seemed to pray at the jury's decision of life in prison was shameful. I am, as an American Citizen, so insulted that this nation has made the murderer the victim and the victim's as mere bodies to be buried.
I know we live in the Best Country in the world! We also believe in the Justice system. However, I cannot wrap my common sense, my heart and my intelligence to give this Monster any rights to be defended!! This Is so sad. I have 4 children and only 1 left in high school and thankfully I live in ten buck too, but it could still happen. I would never allow my kids in a big city public school just because I'm so afraid. Here in Ga the school fights are way up and it's scary. I can not imagine how these poor families feel or how they have made it this far. It has to be only by the grace and love of God. I have cried on every statement and I just don't understand how cruz can sit there with no emotion what so ever. I understand he has mental issues and I pray that somehow God will show that young man that what he did is wrong. God will punish him and there will be no more punishment greater than that of God and I ask God to forgive me because I don't think I could sit in the same room with him. I don't hate anyone and I know he was bound to have issues after hearing about his birth mom but he was raised with a great family and I believe that not only the devil is to blame but the doctors that are suppose to know how to help someone didn't put forth more effort than changing damn medications. Mental health is real I have seen it and been through it myself and you can clearly see this young man is not normal and he needs to be punished and judged for what he took that is irreplaceable. As a Christian I have to forgive but if I was one of the parents I don't know that I could. That young man needs help. I am sorry for the families and send all my prayers and love to be with you all throughout the rest of your lives.

he thought he himsleve would be killed in the shooting, therefore he was also seeking suicide, he said in a video that he would die at that day and take many with him. The video was also kind of goodby message. He said I leave the world today behind.

Not that I'm aware of. I'm just now watching the trial. I've watched bits and pieces, but haven't heard anything about him being bullied. I saw his lawyer's closing argument. It was really long. She didn't say anything about him being bullied or harrassed by anyone. Her basic defense was that he suffered damage because his mother drank and did drugs while pregnant.
How did Nikolas' parents miss this? I'm not saying it's their fault, it's still his, but these things never come out of absolutely nowhere. There's no way he became a scumbag overnight, his depravity was always there but ignored.
These poor families, that monster broke all of these people and got nothing in return. He’s life is over, i want him to feel the same fright he gave his victims but knowing him, he won’t see the correlations. He’ll shack and cry asking “why me” instead of seeing how this was well over due. If you’re reading this, I don’t know what you believe in. But whether you’re agnostic, atheist, or religious. We all can agree he has what’s coming to him.

There was an episode on ... Black Mirror about these little metal robot dogs that was tracking and killing people. Now this thing was straight vicious, and the people was running for their very lives.
Now every once in a while, somebody would go Rambo and maybe destroy one or two of the dogs but after they had to keep moving because more robot dogs would soon come. Never once in that show did any of the people say...Lets find out where all these robot dogs are coming from and start destroying those. And I watch as all of these people would eventually get pick off one by one.

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion. I never expected to feel this way, especially after watching those poor families pour their broken hearts out, but I felt so sad for the defendant. What he did is beyond words, but watching him look over at the families, hugging and comforting each other, while he sat there all by himself. not even his attorneys were looking at him or saying a word. He has absolutely no one by his side. It is weird to feel sympathy for someone that is so incapable of feeling even an ounce of remorse or pain, but I do. I still see a human being there that wishes someone, anyone would love him the way these parents loved their children. No one deserves to be unloved because they have emotional or mental issues. I know no one will agree but he didn’t just massacre those 17 people he also massacred any possibility he may have had of being loved or understood. I can’t imagine how much pain he would have been in to be so completely numb to the cries and suffering of others. How much rage he would have had inside that inflicting pain upon helpless children was the only thing he could think about. We need to do better about finding ways to love and accept the outcasts of the world or these types of horrors will continue to happen. I truly pray that we stop blaming guns or bombs or politics or terrorism or whatever for this insanity and look at our own failure to love and accept as the root of this disease.

as i sit here listening to the statements i can't elp but to cry. Anyone with an assemblance of a heart would. i warched his sentencing a while back and saw that he got life and not death bc at the time of his crime he was a minor and the sate of Florida doesn't allow the death penalty to be carried out on minors. at first i was angry about that. but after i thought about it i was actually pretty happy about it. most child killers are killed in prison. If he would have been sentenced to death he would be in solitary confinemet, nobody could get to him. and he would most likely spend years wasting tax payer's money on appeal after appeal making those parents suffer even more. with life he will be put in with the general population for 7.5 - 10 hours a day. how long do you really think he will last? And after some of the comments here i'm amazed at how some of you feel sorry for the defendents lawyers. it seems that some of you have forggotten about the frizzy haired one at the very end, who made jokes and then flipped of the parents in the gallery. She was enjoying herself and the pain that everyone was feeling!!! Everyone deserves representation. it's part of our legal system. But to have lawyers like that, that is a slap in the face to the justice system. At least she has become one of the most hated women in the country, or was at the time of the incident. It's probably why she was now sitting at the far end of the table, where before during the whole sentencing trial she had been sitting next to him.
