  • Malcolm Dawson took filmed Dorman Long Lackenby Works in Middlesborough in 1965 before he left to take up a job in Australia.
Malcolm worked at Lackenby Works from 1957 to 1965. Extracts from his CV showed:
Mill Manager 1957-60. 21 stand, 3 strand continuous rod, single strand bar and strip mill. Malcolm was responsible for commissioning this new mill built on a greenfield site. Also responsible fro further development of the mill for production of high grade rod for the Forth and Severn suspension bridges which established Dorman Long in the quality rod market.
Assistant Works Manager Rolling mills 1960-65. Wider responsibility for operation and coordination of a large rolling mill complex comprising blooming and slabbing mills, universal beam mill, billet mill, plate mill, rod and bar mills. Particular responsibilities included operating costs, quality control, labour relations and negotiating will mill suppliers for the procurement of a 25 stand straight in-line 2/4 strand rod mill.
I uploaded the cine film in case its of any interest to persons researching steel making in the UK in the 50s - 60s and or Middlesborough. If not, its amazing just to see the works in action and see how people worked (forget health and safety).
