The building of Dorman long coke ovens in Southbank Middlesbrough , building took place from 1952 to 1957.
The huge Coal bunker with the 'Dorman long' logo is a local landmark and can be seen from the A66
UPDATE October 2015 the whole of Teeside steel works closed, SSI who owned the works was liquidated.
UPDATE At 1.55 am 19th September 2021 the Dorman Long Tower was blew up as part of a demolition project against the wishes of many ex-workers and local residents who viewed it as a local landmark and monument to well over 150 years of steelmaking in the area. I for one wanted the tower to remain and seen the action as pure vandalism towards a heritage building.

A true testament to British engineering and resolve. A tragic event happened at the Ammonia washers at SBCO on 19/09/2019 where 2 contractors sadly lost there lives due to an explosion from the towers as they where subcontracted with the agreed decommissioning and demolition of the Ammonia wash towers at the South Bank site. What a terrible loss of life, thoughts and condolences are with family and friends.

Excellent well put together video and the music was very discriptive for that environment, I used to play there as a child, they found a buried German bomber plane with the pilot still sat in it years later right next to that oven.

I moved to Boro 9 years ago and would drive out of my way to watch it in operation.

Good to see construction rather than destruction of Teesside icons. Amazing. I was part of that. Sad it may seem

I still work there. The original batteries were knocked down in 1972 and a two new ones built to the East. The Dorman bunker is still standing and is used as a header tank for the fire fighting system. One of the quenchers is still utilised as is the by product plant.

Oh yes, and brexit has obviously worked wonders for this country. Leaving the EU has had a brilliant effect on us.
