*_Alita Battle Angel was one of the better and underrated films of the year. It didn't preach unnecessary politics to you and didn't feminize the male characters to accentuate the "masculinity" of the female lead. The world depicted within the film was interesting and left me with a desire to explore it further_* .
Read the manga series! I've been a Fan since the mid 90ies. (skip the last book of the first series and go right to "First Order" the second series, it retcons the forced and bad ending.) Everything "Bad" is an addition or a change made by the movie. The worldbuilding is phenomenal in the original.
lol , they simply did a good job at it. there was enough politics in the movie they simply didnt preech it to the audience. while other movies force and preech their politics in movies .
@@konstantingr5928 No one is denying the inescapable presence of political pandering in films. But when that bias is featured excessively within the film and sacrifices the overall quality it comes off as insufferable "cringe-fuel".
Well, going from the Original thought alita. This one isn’t bad, but less appropriate told. Being a battle droid carrying a brain, she learns from all her experiences to become more human and care about them. This part is left out because normally Japanese manga are too close to life and actual circumstances that a Hollywood movie could fit in the plot or barely grasp the story told.
I watched both of them back to back in theaters. What little I remember about captain marvel was formulaic boring politicized garbage acted out by a fucking potato with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Alita was strange but ultimately a good time.
I am in no way defending Captain Marvel, but Alita sounded like garbage. I like anime, but there are some overused tropes that annoy me and this movie managed to score several of them. First among them is: guy finds mysterious girl/girl-bot with no memories and she needs to find out who she is. The rich upper class living in floating cities, or the top level of a layered city. Ugh, how many times have we seen that? And yes, I know anime characters have big eyes, but in a live action movie, it's just off-putting.
@ressljs I don’t think this movie was really made for anime fans. I think it was more of a crossover where they were trying to get “normies” into anime. I’m not into anime, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie with the plot elements you mentioned. I was just glad to see a movie that was a story and not preaching poorly forced into what could be a story. Also it was nice to see a story that was new for me as opposed to a mediocre live action remake of my favorite childhood films. At first the eyes were too over the top for me but I got used to them and didn’t even notice them by the end. Hugo was a moron though, I’m glad they axed him.
@@ressljs Well, I guess you are unfamiliar with the source material. Not only GUNNM is actually a founder of many of those tropes you mention, but those tropes are actually a meaningful element of the setting, which is a rather multi-layered and vast sci-fi landscape, far from being limited to the confines of "poor down - rich up". Let's just say that the utopia in Salem is even more horrifying than violent chaos of Iron City, and that there is always a bigger fish.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and the best part was that Alita hersef was likable and believable. The scene where she LITERALLY offers Hugo her heart was a bit silly, but on the other hand, i remember what it was like to be young and in love. And it totally worked.
Its...a scene from the manga... Its serves to show her naivity at this point and that she's willing to go to this extreme for whats she believes. She is the type of character that is all in or nothing, at this point of the story she's very Black Or White, this will change after Yugo's death and when she immerse herslef completly into the Motorball as a forward runaway to forget everything, even though the constant fighting, gives her more and more flashbacks of her former life, at wich point you discover that she is indeed from Mars, where she learned the Panzer Kunst( while in the movie it is established way earlier and more casually, in the manga, Ido knows about this MA, but he doesn't mention its origine) After all this she's less Black & WHite and more Grey Moraly as a character, even though she upholds a strong sens of justice and she acts and promise to help anyone she can within the reach of her arms.
The city in the sky was essentially the "grass is greener" scenario. Nobody knows what is up there. That is why everyone wants to go. All they have is rumors of luxury and decadence that drives the imagination. People think it is heaven. This is pushed forward by the Golden Ticket idea to get up there you just have to have a ticket; which are hard to come by. I didn't feel they really needed to explain how or why the city was such a driving force for the people. I do agree that the father seemed like he was going to have a dark secret. I assume they intended for the dark secret to be that he was a vigilante with the power hammer, but it wasn't really as deep as they could have taken it.
I've heard this complaint a lot. But what people don't realize is this is based on a several volume thing. And it was good they took their time and didn't rush to the city up there. That's explained later.
Grass so green you would endanger yourself and your crew, making them face ruthless mechanical monsters to get out of the city? The amazing camping scene where they went to the crashed ship with beautiful clear water and nice green hill is just unnecessary. The city is so nice and peaceful that kids skates in public with warm sunshine glows, which makes the dangerous street part seems like it's somewhere else, and Ido's daughter got killed by a junkie even more jarring. They completely failed to portray the dystopia such as the comic. Mind-boggling decision. Why would you change the setting that puts events into motions?
@@cypherredux2771 Yeah, so many timeskips and off-screen character development really killed the movie for me. Characters just randomly had new motivations or outlooks that weren't built-up to.
I love TCD. And he's so on point about almost everything IMO. That being said, I adore Alita, like more than I should lol, so, I am afraid to watch his video after the title ;P
1917 won best visual effects that year. I haven't seen it yet, but from what I've seen the film definitely deserved it for it's undetectable shot transitions and amazing blend of practical and digital effects. That being said, Alita definitely should've been nominated, the film's style is mesmerizing and the robotic characters like Alita surpass the uncanny valley and look like they're actually real.
@@crazybabuskaman3923 And I think there's something about how they deliberately made her eyes huge that skirts the "uncanny valley" problem with a lot of CGI faces. Like your brain can tell up-front that it's not trying to be a regular human face so there's none of that dissonance that comes with a lot of CG movies.
SJW's: "men dont like female leads in action films! damn misogyny!" *Alita gets positive reviews by men who saw it* SJW's: "it doesn't count if it isn't Captain Marvel"
Right? They make that accusation upon me for never having gone to see any of the disney Star Wars films...then I tell them that Meetra Surik is my favorite expanded universe star wars character. I get the most derp looks and silence in response.
It's because Alita is the wrong kind of heroine: she's feminine and she's not ashamed of it. Women who actually behave like women are not the kind of thing SJWs want to exist.
@ well he is Scottish and I agreed with a lot. This easily could have been two movies and everyone thinks they could of used the talented cast more. Other people have complained about not knowing the back story also. When I first saw it I didn't know it myself but it did not bother me or detract from the movie for me. I love the movie but nothing is perfect. In the end he did like the movie and that's pretty rare for 2019 films.
I like the film too and see the flaws too. Especially when placed up to its source material. They could have left motorball alone and focused more on some of these characters backstories.
You said one of the cons was: you wanted to know what’s up in the floating city, and why characters wanted to get up there. I think that’s also the answer. They wanted to know what was up there.
No, the answer is that Iron city is actually a dystopian hell hole. The biggest flaw this movie has is its sunny, funny, nice depiction of Iron City cuz it undermines characters motivations. In the manga/anime many people literally live in cardboard boxes and have to scavenge through garbage to find food. Hugo having a luxury suite in comparison is living in what looks like a ruin of a house from 1980s Beirut. In the Manga you didn't need to know what was up there cuz nothing could be worse than iron city. Also the Manga *told* you what's up there but it's further into the story and since Cameron actually did what he was supposed to and stuck to the source material, this would most lilkey come up in the sequel he clearly wanted... Just hoping there will be one. 🤞
"Jennifer Connelly seems to have no purpose in this movie whatsoever" (shows scene where she's lying in bed wearing lingerie) I... strongly... disagree.
about Dr. Chiren Ido: (there's some complex stuff going on here with her as I'll try to explain, which is why Jennifer Connely did such an amazing job, as she conveyed all of this complexity, mostly with actions, body language, facial expressions, and etc, as she had very little lines) She loved her daughter Alita, and blamed her husband, Dr. Daisuke (movie: "Dyson") Ido for Alita's death, as it was one of his motorball "patients" looking for drugs who killed Alita, hence her divorcing him (though she too was a Dr. working with him with repairing the motorball players, but she just blames him and not herself too, maybe deep down inside, she is blaming herself too, possibly). Also, Alita could never be replaced. Chiren despised Ido for keeping their daughter's cyber body, as how dare he ever think of giving it to anyone except their now dead daughter! (and it painfully reminds her of Alita being dead, of course as well, never being able to try out the body made for her use). Upon their daughter Alita's death, Chiren (Dr. Ido's ex-wife, and fellow Dr.) had nothing to live for, except to get back up to Zalem. She became a ruthless cold-hearted bitch who didn't care about anyone or anything, as she pursued getting back up to Zalem. She might have also hoped that with Zalem's tech, she could get Alita back... but can't get more into this, as its massive spoiler territory. Also, I think the movie does convey it, but just in case, Chiren was banging Vector, as further incentive to get his help (and thus connection/contact with Nova), in getting back up to Zalem. However, seeing Alita's (her real name is Yoko, btw) humanity, selflessness, willing to sacrifice her own life to save Hugo's, reminded Chiren of being human, and of being a mother, and of her dead daughter Alita, and so, Chiren knowingly sacrificed her own life, to save Hugo's, as she would be punished for this betrayal of hers by Nova. Chiren got chopped up into pieces, her organs and etc body parts will be sent up to Zalem, for Nova's experiments.
@@nhmooytis7058 Really? Oh no, no, she's still a total fox, imo 🦊 That elegance and class she has just makes her super sexy in my eyes. Definitely not too old to be taking her clothes off, no Sir 🙂
Queazy Yea, that’s the situation, the drinker didn’t necessarily make a good video here. It’s too stupidly analysed. The criticisms of “simplicity” for example, Alita thrashed Gruwishka, not coz of a sudden development, but coz of her new suit which is way more powerful and it makes sense. If she had trouble, the upgrade would be too little. Or that dick with a sword; Drinker wants a cliche sideplot where he becomes good. Really? It’s such a stupid suggestion, I was shocked that he didn’t change his ways. Only goes to show how Alita constructed it’s world to show that there’s really no redemption for ANYONE, not even Hugo who suffered at the end of the film
felixader That’s wrong. I have only seen the movie and afterwards the hour long anime. I like the live-action movie more, and not only that, but I think it’s among the best of the whole decade; I have since I first saw it. And I assess it only as a movie. Every opinion I have towards this movie is just of the movie itself, not based on a series. I just literally think that it’s impossible not to c the points I made coz I saw them in an instant when watching the film. If u can’t tell what it’s about, what the motivations r and why the development is the way that it is, then that just means u obviously haven’t paid enough attention or u just rushed to conclusions way too early. It’s unrational to make the points Drinker made coz he literally made them as if he didn’t watch the movie and only saw separate clips in a non-chronological order so he couldn’t link anything to the flow of the story
@@felixader For example. He made a comment on how her cutting of his face was nothing. Even though they built it up over the movie that the dude has an unhealthy obsession about his face. So it works once you actually take that into account. It's not just, well, he no longer has a face.
I really enjoyed Alita. Granted it's far from perfect, but I found it a refreshing change from a lot of the bullshit that Hollywood churns out. Adapting manga is always a gamble, and will likely never be a massive financial success due to its more limited target audience, so I respect them for taking it on at all, and actually putting a fair bit of effort in to it. It was clear they cared about what they were doing. I suspect the 'too many threads' issue stems from trying to be true to the mange, whilst also making it accessible to those unfamiliar with it. But totally agree that its strongest selling point is Alita herself. Rather than a generic 'strong female character', she an *interesting* character. I found her very likeable and endearing, and believable in her flaws, and it's a great performance. I'd recommend people watch it just to remind themselves that not all big-budget Hollywood films are bullshit. I would love to see this world expanded, and have the sequel they were so clearly setting up, but sadly I don't think it'll happen.
Well, that's the thing, it wasn't true to the manga or an adaption of it. It was an adaption from the crappier OVA. It's going to be awkward how they'll handle the sequel since the next part they blew past and basically ignored. For example, Jashugan is a BIG personality and influence to Alita in the source material, but in the movie they made him some clown who got one-shotted practically offscreen.
gonna have to agree with you on the manga part. While I have never read this manga series, I do know that it takes ages for character building...FOR EVERYONE. jesus, just look at Cowboy Bebop...4 main characters and 26 episodes later...gawds, heartbreaking (not manga, just saying the writers know how to character build)....and taking ALL OF THE MANGA and stuffing it into a 2 hour movie? Just tossing the fanbase away for a quick buck....i.e. Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.
I was going to reply, but this pretty much sums it up for me, so +1. I enjoyed it despite it's flaws, and more so due to the fact that current Hollywood just can't seem to get a decent female character right. This gives us someone very relatable, very human, despite her almost complete lack of human contents (the only thing human about here is her brain). It's not an award winner, but it's still a gem in my eyes. And I think that we need to lift up the movies that at least try to do things right, instead of the multi-million dollar messes that get everything wrong but tell us to "deal with it" because their special snowflakes, and were just "toxic fandom".
Nice review and while I do agree with most of it, let me clarify a few things: 1) Zalem doesn't float. It's hanging... from something. 2) Motorball players have special bodies made for the game. These are not their everyday bodies. 3) Finding the Berserker body in a crashed ship is much better than Ido randomly keeping it in his basement (from the manga). 4) Battle Angel Alita came out before T2 so idk what the comparison between Dr Ido and Miles Dyson was for. As for Hugo- I fully agree. His backstory was completely trimmed for the movie and most ppl feel like the actor was miscast.
@@iliveinsideyourhouse3943 Exactly, and he does so because he realised it was a berserker body and as such a terrifying weapon. Alita being worthy and in dire need of such body to beat the odds.
@@Leynx-Et-Fenrir Yea the OP needs to pay attention to the manga more. There literally nothing the movies and the anime did better than the manga in my opinion.

This movie wasn't the best ever but it was enjoyable enough that I didn't require copious amounts of alcohol to sit through it. And Salazar is a way better actress than Larson.
Its an incredibly average movie that people latched on to as a way to complain about Brie Larson and a worse movie (captain marvel). Even now its objectively tough to say anything good about it so 90% of people just complain more about the Brie rather than saying anything about it. Boring.
I might be late to this vid, but just wanted to share that it didn't seem strange to me that Dr. Ido decided to bring her to life nor how she was free to just rest on her own without supervision and roam around. And I think there's two reasons that I felt okay with all of this right on my first watch: 1) Ido is a doctor, by nature he would help a soul if he could. He didn't need to have a pragmatic reason other than just bringing a person to good health, so when he found a beating heart he had to take her in. They even mention in the movie that they're running out of money because he keeps doing surgeries for free, plus the bounty hunting side-hussle, both examples that further prove he wants to devote his time to serve others, even if at his own detriment. 2) she wakes up in what is essentially a hospital and is given the space to rest, recover and grapple with reality at her own pace. I also liked how calm the doctor and nurse are when she wakes up, shows they've seen worse cases or have had to deal with bigger threats. That's just a theory, but the world-building in this movie is quite remarkable.
ye it does make since for me and he doesn't seem like the type of person who would be very suspicious of others the head didn't look particularly threatening and the spaceship is the cream of the crop tech on a sifi world it could probably last a little while under water and explaining I cant repair this body if it was broken might have been a discouragement from old doc not to peruse a violent lifestyle and at least it doesn't jerk you around like a death fake out and world builds the suit a little.
@@bipstymcbipste5641 Well there seems to be this consensus backlash now that you can't consider Alita a masterpiece. But I'd definitely put it in that category. The only real problem I had was how it ended; but I also understand why it had to end there so not really a fault of the film itself.
@@bipstymcbipste5641 I agree. I haven't been much impressed with films this year. This one was a huge surprise considering that I didn't think it would even be good and ended up loving it.
The special features really show how they had planned the movie for years and got the approval of the manga writer. The dedication they put in this was amazing, and it shows how modern cgi and body tracking can be used in beautiful work today.
someone, as a matter a fact anyone or thing, that reflect on themselves have more soul then someone/thing that always think they are right...lol I I guess I just solve the mystery of what define soul.
This movie was a pleasant surprise for me. I couldn't even tell why I bought the tickets, the trailer didn't convince me, her huge eyes looked weird, and despite liking Cristopher Waltz, I was pretty sure I would put this movie in the "bad" category of his films. All in all, I was already expecting some more of the "strong independent woman" bullshit. After finishing it, I was surprised, I really enjoyed it. Mostly because I don't have that much problem with simple plots, so long as the story is solid. But most of all, I enjoyed Alita. In the midst of this progressive shitstorm we're living, where all female characters have to be instantly perfect, and all male characters have to be weak and/or dumb, and if they're white, evil, it was refreshing to see the protagonist was none of that. She's charming, naive, happy, confident but not to the point of looking down on others, she gets resentful, she makes mistakes, she needs help every so often, and she doesn't always get her way, and yes, she does kick major ass. Well holy shit... They actually made her a likeable character, and never once tried to push the "girl power", or "men are evil" narrative. They even "allowed" some white people to be heroes, and minorities to be villains. It's like finding a rare gem amidst shit these days I'm thankful I took the chance to see this movie
Bsicdlgv The "anime" eyes was definitely distracting the first time I saw it. I was also leery of Christoph Waltz since I loved how great a villain he played in _Inglourious Bastards._ The second time removed all doubt -- there is a simple charm and fun to the movie that made it a breath of fresh air compared to Mary Sue characters. While I was **really** wanting it to be a great solid 95% movie I feel it like it was only a solid 80% "good" movie due to how complexity and simplicity was forced it. Kind of wish it had been split into two movies for better pacing. Overall a good movie to just kick back and enjoy.
It was obviously the first movie in a story originally planned to be covered by two movies. It's major flaw is that it feels incomplete. Two movies would have added up to about four hours.
@@richardrose2606 The problem is the second movie would be impossible to make, because of how Cameron totally fucked up the story of 3 whole books, cutting or changing plotpoints that would be important for the setup and resolution of the following story.
Cables are there to keep city in place because of counterweight in space. In Last Order there is much more information. This is origin story. It is not the best. There are much better stories in Alita manga but you have to start with origin. In Last Order there is story about Vilma who is vampire. That 2 volume story is good enough to make stand alone movie.
@@Evilokami(in the movie) Did she lose a fight? Exhibit flaws/weakness in character or action? Fail to save someone? Then no she is not a Mary Sue. And she is enjoyable I agree.
@@Evilokami I would not say she is Mary Sue. Even when she gets extremely strong in manga. She still has lots of inner conflict and hard decisions to make and in the end only succeeds with help of her friends and comrades. Yes she gets ridiculous power-ups, but she still needs help.

Is a legit question for a ship that has been submerged for 300 years. All tech you mention, while being techy tech tech, still doesn't solve the problem: metal impervious to passage of time while being submerged in salt water for 300 years. Oh, and let's not forget it crashed, from orbit, and it maintained structural integrity ?
@@Zamolxes77 I can give some excuse for this point for a bit, In the original comic there is a metal called Damascus (I think it's already a thing in our world) that thing is unbreakable and that ship prob mad out of it. But then again, I don't really know. because that shit doesn't exist in the original.
@@Zamolxes77 Salt water? Says who? Seems like a lake to me, which would make it fresh water. Also, why do you think it just fell from the sky? It's a ship, which could easily have "crash landed" rather than just crashed. Yes, there are plenty of metals impervious to water. As for it being airtight (except the hole Alita crawled through), that's pretty simple: Every spaceship would have to be airtight. As for its durability, it was built for battle, meaning backup systems, a durable structure, etc. As for the power, it was already explained that Alita's own "heart" was strong enough to power the city for hundreds of years. How would the people that made such technology not have also made a similar power source for their ship?
At first I thought the same thing, but then I remembered my old computer that completely broke down when being stored away for a few months in slightly colder than room temperature
@@johncrafton8319 Although there are some explanations in the film, they are weak. Only very simple things can survive 300 years exposed to the elements of nature. With almost everything, the more advanced it is, the more maintenance it needs. Given that flying chains can penetrate almost anything, it's hard to believe that someone would not have looted the ship. Screws and nuts can also be recycled for their metal.
2:22 The movie vaguely made the point that those people "wear" different bodies outside the arena. Most of the characters in this scene were shown in their normal-looking humanoid bodies prior to this scene.
I dont know Alita is one of the few movies I've watched multiple times over the last few years. I like it alot and will most likely read the manga at this point since I'm not sure they'll ever make a sequel.
The biggest difference between Alita and Capt. Softcheese is this: Alita feels like a movie, made by people who actually gave a shit about the source material and wanted to made a good film. It´s by no means a cinematic masterpiece, but it´s well made, entertaining, respects the source material as already mentioned and doesn´t try to shove some ideology down this audience´s throat. And that´s more than enough for me.
Alita was a mediocre CGI mess that reminded me of Jupiter Ascending. But I agree that it felt like it was made by people who genuinely cared. A labor of love so to speak. They had the will, the cast, and the budget, but not the skill to make a great film or tell a compelling story. It was only good relative to the other shit that was released at the time.
@@maybehuman4 Mediocre: of moderate or low quality, value, ability, or performance None of that is true, though is it? It's not like it's a perfect movie but it's not mediocre. Every major person involved in the film has a history of successful work and/or work that receives accolades so it doesn't seem fair to say none of them have the skill to make a great film or tell a compelling story. The only true problem with the story is that they tried to put too much in... probably because they wanted to make sure they got to a good stopping point (considering that one never knows if something is going to be able to get a sequel) and maybe because they wanted to keep the feel of how a manga would portray the story as much as they could. Despite that flaw, they still managed to make the story cohesive.
fazdoll that’s because the media only focused on Captain Marvel and didn’t advertise it and because it didn’t have the luxury of being stuck between Infinity War and Endgame.
Alita grossed $86 in the US,, $319m international ($405m total) with production costs at $170m. CM grossed $427m, $701m (total $1.1b total) with production costs at $152m.
One of the main issues when they try to make films of good manga stories is that they fit years of story into 2 hours, its impossible to do it justice, Alita should have been a trilogy and more dark targetting adult audiences.
14:11 "Why is Zollum so special?" I love you man but this one completely whooshed over your head. I think this is exactly the tought the movie aims to confer! By not showing anything of it. It has a kind of promised land trait that might be mirroring heaven or other religious lies which actually amount to mere power constructs. You see a guy die trying to get there before he knows anything, just tales....
Good point. I don't know if it's deliberate but it could be a metaphor for real life with so many people 'chasing the dream' and wanting to succeed, but not really having a clear idea about what the dream or that success looks like. Sometimes decisions like that are a result of good writing. But like I say it could be consequential rather than deliberate here, I don't know.
I wanted to point a few things about your review: - After the disastrous history of Manga adaptations, Alita could be one of the best. - The original name of "Dyson Ido" is "Daisuke Ido". I dont know if they realized the similarities when "translated" the name. - Glad that you like it. :)
Don't watch Terminator: Dark Fate. Dude they killed John conner. He is Luke Skywalker-ed. Feminists are hoping you'll pay them for this. If you have to see it, just pirate it. Also watch some porno animes to compensate for the lack of any sex scenes in any of the above movies. F*ck the SJWs. Have you noticed they forgot to put nude hot chics in movies these days? I started to notice when the last terminator never show Emilia Clark naked when she is always flashing her tits in Game of Thrones. It is a shock to my system because when they hide nudity it is a sign they are deliberately going out of their way to piss off men who watch these movies. (gore, sex, interesting fantasy settings are what drive attention of nerds to these worlds) I liked it better when the nerd sphere was a kind of more true to what real nerds like and not this mainstream "pop culture" or "geek culture" thing where its attempting to be acceptable for everyone. You know why? It's less edgy, not risky, and it feels formulaic. Like they put the bare minimum thing in there without thinking how to make it good and stand out. It was given a checklist of things to tick off and that's it. We are experiencing this with the role playing game genre now where games feel dumbed down.
Same here. This film was awesome. Plus it discredited the bs main stream media stance that men don't support female leads. Especially ahead of Captain Marvel which was a bag of sh*t
i dunno, i think he has a good point. it can still be a good movie with the flaws that it has tho. it has some rly good story elements and a very relatable and likeable main character. imo its the second best movie of the year, after joker. but i dont rly watch that many movies. the best out of like 4 or 5 doesnt mean that much so maybe im not the best judge of that
I was honestly so surprised by this film. As jaded as I am by current-day Hollywood, I really only expected a mildly enjoyable film that I couldn't say much negative about. What I got to watch though was incredible. It left me thoroughly invested in the world and its characters. I'll be seriously disappointed if they don't make a part 2.
@@yordanazzolin He admitted it was selfish in the manga as well. But it went beyond that as his selfishness went as far as wanting to see her lose in the motorball tournament.
I believe she is supposed to wander Into The Uncanny Valley.... she's not fully human...if they just used a stand in human as a cyborg people would think human... not cyborg... this never happens in this movie... and one of the reasons I like it.
It was an intentional design choice. Alita's a cyborg so she's not supposed to look like a real human. If she was, they would have just had Rosa Salazar play the role without motion capture. This also means that she technically doesn't fall into the Uncanny Valley because that describes things that are meant to look completely human, and perhaps even DO look completely human (people were genuinely fooled by the CGI for Tarkin in Rogue One and I suspect that all of the people who complained already knew that Peter Cushing is dead, which gave them a preconceived bias), but your brain still knows there's something wrong.
People had too high a standards when it comes to silver screen adaptation. The movie is decent and if i ever want something more in-depth, i read tge manga.
I still want a sequel. Alita had a very passionate fanbase when the movie came out and I was part of it but the fans have grown quiet in the last year or so. I think the Alita Army technically still exists but very few people talk about the movie anymore. I also worry that Disney might be able to influence AKA ruin the sequel. James Cameron still owns the rights and even Alita's original creator liked the movie so he and Robert Rodriguez clearly treated the source material with respect. However, Disney have been able to trick and manipulate people like George Lucas in the past before desecrating their work.
@@tomnorton4277 Of course the "Alita Army" went quiet. Hopefully, most found the manga and became real fans. The movie, although crafted wonderfully besides the writing, sucked compared to the real source material. And I'm not talking about the crappy OVAs that cut stuff out while adding in filler stuff.
@@konradplatt3833 yeah this is making me wonder if this is a sometimes implemented tactic in the animes that are released where the story of the anime is slightly off or ends early to the original manga in order to drive up sales of the manga because people want to finish the story
I watched this in the theater with my brother, had no idea it was a manga/anime, and knew nothing about it. I was very pleasantly surprised and absolutely loved it.
Captain Feminazi perfectly embodys what happens when totally mediocre people get power. Not even a smug attitude. But plain direct arrogance and disrespect.
"How is Zalem floating in the air?" Well, this is jumping ahead, but the city is actually physically connected by a central pillar (which we catch a few climpses of in the movie) to a space station of some sort and it's the opposing forces of the Earth's gravity pullng Zalem and the centrifuge force of the planet's rotation pushing away the space city that's keeping it all afloat. We will more than likely see this in future instalments when she goes up there... And I'm confident there will be sequels, maybe not soon, but considering home sales have been doing great, at some point there will be.
It's a space elevator. Zalem is the bottom tier. Gravity is what is holding it up. At the top is another city that is roughly at geosynchronous orbit. Its mass acts as a counterbalance to the rest of the tower. This is one plot element I didn't like about the movie, and for reasons stated in it. If they attacked the "towers" most likely they would come crashing back down and cause tremendous damage. This is what seems to have happened in the movie version with the cities falling and skies burning. That'll happen if you have thousands of miles of cable crashing down onto the planet at re-entry speeds. If the cut the cable closely above Zalem, Zalem would fall and almost certainly destroy Iron City. Cutting below and maybe it would drift along near the surface like a wrecking ball until it either went up into space or brought the whole lot crashing down onto the earth. If you were coming from Mars and wanted to really screw the Earth over, cutting the towers at the top would have been the thing to do, not invading them from below.
@@TallicaMan1986 I've had to explain it to a lot of people. Few people seem to even know such a thing is a concept, let alone that designs for them exist, only that materials technology has a ways to go to build one.
@@beardedbjorn5520 No, not in the movie, mainly because it's not relevant to plot at that particular time but also because the people of Iron City simply doesn't know about the existence of the orbital city and the whole equilibrium of forces to explain it, except maybe for Ido/Dyson. Also, explaining this concept this early would really feel superfluous on top of the already heavy world-building stuff present in the movie. The movie covered more or less the 3 first book of a series of 9 and this is discovered later in the series anyways.
Going by the manga, the 'flying' city is the severed lower end of a space elevator. It's not so much a city flying over the ground as being in geosynchronous orbit with a cable coming a very long way from that height that people are living on.
It's not severed, there's a second city at the top of the space elevator. You find out about it in the New Order series. But yes, it's all in geosynch orbit.
A 36,000 km long 300+ meter wide cable that's attached to an orbital ring structure that forms 657,600+/- km loop around the planet. The scale would be insane. Imagine taking all 1.446 billion motor vehicles on Earth and placing them side by side and 2 deep in geosynchronous orbit and multiplying that by 10.
What's fascinating is that these types of characters exist already in other storytelling mediums like video games and comics and novels. It's the rich, white, neoliberal class that pervades Hollywood that is struggling to keep up with the changing times. It's the same class that feels compelled to make award ceremonies politically charged because nobody would sit through 4 hours of millionaires giving one another gold statues for no reason unless it was presented as "helping" in some distorted way. They either don't know how to simply portray women as people, or they don't have any desire to - or both. They're just running down the checklist of *what they think people want to see,* and they couldn't be any further detached from reality. If anything, it shows a disdain for women and people who want to see stories about women characters.
They really tried to hold to the manga, but that was impossible to press into one movie. But I really liked it, it didn´t try "new and shocking approach" or some other BS only for effect.
@Beau James I really appreciated that they held so closely to the anime, which did well in reshaping the manga into a more "normies friendly" movie - my first fear was, that there will be unwanted experiments which change the whole story, because the creators didn´t understand the original. Now this movie needs at least one sequel.
I think the main problem with that was the decision that we absolutely had to have motorball in this movie, which didn't happen in the manga until the second story arc.
i mean, faults and all it's still the best hollywood adaptation of an anime/manga. excluding Chronicle. (and rosa salazar was beyond spectacular in the role)
In a sense i disagree with what you said about her getting the upgrade, and it being unearned. An underlying premise of the movie is that she is actually really powerful. But, she’s now stuck in a far more primitive body, without her memory, relying on instinct and reflexes to fight. I loved the power progression in Alita: Battle Ange personally
I think you are being overly TOUGH on this movie. With the recent shit we have been handed in 2018 / 2019 then Alita is a great movie. Not everything needs to be explained in detail, mystery and not knowing in a movie is also great.
True, In this case, this is part of a larger story after all. I do have to agree they tried to cram a little too much in the run time. Movie should have been a little longer to compensate...
The Critical Drinker has very high standards for movies. I agree with him that the plot contained too many elements for the given runtime. The Manga's story is huge and deserves a series of films. One film or even two are certainly too little to present plot and characters in an appropriate way. I disagree with him on many of his criticisms: ruclips.net/video/j5kApEGWwys/видео.html&lc=Ugy7Ef1bQfY8CYkO7iB4AaABAg
I actually watched the movie again this weekend just remind myself Im not “some sexist pig” yea the movie is not perfect and they have to fit a lot of stuff, but compared to the OP females, Dum useless males... it was really refreshing to see a lead female role that I could actually rood for and is not some smug character like Charlies angels, S Wars, Watchmen, Cap Marvl, Trmntr DF. I really got an OG Aliens, Termn 1,2, Nikkita vibe when watching Alita.
You have a weird way of making up acronyms, my friend. It's as if you try to write the whole word but you become lazy half way through. Truly i have not seen this before. I don't even...
My Review: Just saw Alita - Battle Angel, been waiting over a year for this and was not disappointed. As I drove home absorbing what I'd just seen I became overwhelmed with emotions. Half the reviewers shat on this movie because of a few reasons, but those reasons don't knock this off the artistic pedestal I've put it on. For a movie based on Manga, Anime, and involves cyborgs and the United Republics of Mars, Alita speaks to the human condition in ways that need to be addressed. From the damage of corruption (Lobbying in the U.S.) to being drawn to violence, to the quest for love and identity, to the struggle to find one's place in the world, Battle Angel addresses these subjects with a much needed level of empathy that carries this movie beautifully. Though there were a few differences between Alita and the Anime that I saw many years ago, they didn't take away from what made that story great & important. A layered and richly textured movie, Alita - Battle Angel is so much more than CGI karate and explosions. The caste system at play in Alita's world exploits the poor with false promises of riches and a better life, but only if those poor people are essentially willing to sacrifice themselves in the process and kill one another, the most treacherous of which may get a chance at the wealth that supposedly exists in the city in the sky. This rings all too familiar in the world the youth of today are growing up in. The sad fact that any piece of media that attempts to address our international class struggle gets shot down is a testament to the power of corruption, selfishness, and greed in our world. The themes of Alita - Battle Angel stand against those forces, and for that, its probably one of the more important movies out right now. Simultaneously inspiring & heartbreaking.
yeah it was great. And I think captain woke ruined it because people saw it as a rival to captain woke, so sjws avoided alita on purpose... because of course they are slaves to people like disney who dupe them just as you described
I quite liked the movie, but I recognize that part of that is because I am such a fan of the manga. Parts of the movie didn't really work, but Salazar really brought Alita's naivety, love, and joy to life.
@@TheEnigmaticBM39 Cameron HAD more movies planned for Alita when he first bought the IP from the author Yukito Kishiro, but he is much more interested in making 295 more Avatar sequels. He really didn't make/create Alita Battle Angel at all. Cameron did write a basic script for the first movie (which came from the first 3 volumes of Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita), but it took director Robert Rodriguez to ask Cameron if he was ever going to do anything with the Alita IP. Cameron basically said no, Rodriguez asked if he could do the movie, Cameron basically said, sure, whatever, and Rodriguez took it from there.
100% think you would like the original happens of Alita getting her name in the manga. Literally covered in a couple panels, would have cut probably 10 mins from the movie for more important things. Ido: "hmm i got it! Alita! starting today your name is Alita!" Gonzu: "Wait a minute... Wasn't that your cat?! The one that died last month?! Wasn't it a boy?!" Ido: "i don't care! It's just until she remembers her own name..." and done. The only thing that carries through is the cat thing but that is much later.
Alita: Battle Angel was far and away the best science fiction movie of 2019. Most everything else was "woke" crap. Hollywood is rapidly destroying movie franchises to pander to the sjw crowd of clowns. Star Wars is now crap, Capt not so Marvelous was pathetic, latest Terminator garbage. Long after all the current crop of PC garbage movies are forgotten, Alita: Battle Angel will be recognized for what it is; a science fiction masterpiece.
It's the Wonder Woman of anime adaptations. In all honesty, I'm uncertain whether Alita 2 will be as warmly welcome since it has a lot to say about class/wealth warfare via predatory practices, but it also explains a lot of the confusing things in Part 1.
One little nice detail that I feel is worth adding is that Alita shows both character and agency at the start of the first action scene, because she believes Dyson is actually a murderer, rather than someone about to attack one, and she goes to stop him, not realizing that he was actually the one trying to hunt a killer. She was thankful for everything he did for her, but her principles still made her stop him from what she thought was going to be a cold-blooded action, and I felt that moment alone was quite good, and containing, in subtext, more than some entire character arcs in recent years.
That weapon kind of makes sense in this world, too. As a bounty hunter, you need to kill a whole bunch of cyborgs with thick armor plating, so a big spike with a rocket on the back would likely be a good tool to penetrate the thick armor and damage the internals.
Final Fantasy 7 did come out 7 years after the original Battle Angel manga, so it's more likely that FF7 nicked ideas from this than the other way around.
I just finished watching Alita this evening. The film still holds up despite ending on a cliffhanger. We need a sequel and thankfully, Avatar 2 is a massive hit which gives James Cameron more leverage to get it made.
It also is a great movie to take daughters to. Other than the last 15 of Wonder Woman it was a great daddy daughter date movie. I am always happy to support a movie that is feminine but not preachy. We should make sure our daughters see Ripley as a bad ass and not Capt. Marvel.
Alita alone was enough for me to really like maybe even love this movie. Rosa Salazar and the VFX team did an amazing job! I wished certain things were done differently and I agree it's a lot of script put together but I still enjoyed the movie and watched it couple of times And let's not forget the amazing score and music by Junkie XL. The music is really overlooked I think and in my opinion it's one of the very strong positives of this movie.
I remember when this came out, and all the talk was "is there a chance this will be any good?", not "this is going to be the awesomest thing ever!" There was no hype.
same goes for me, I just watched this during its release having no expectations whatsoever considering idk anything about the anime or manga. But hecc, i was astounded by the movie making it one of my fav films for 2019.
Yea agreed, After watching it, and comparing with other movies that came out at the same time, it was pretty incredible that there was so little talk about Alita in general. I guess everything, both positive and negative views, went onto cpt marvel for too long and overshadowed most of the other stuff that happened. Alita is 100x better, well most movies are. But sadly, quality isn't always what gets most media and public attention. Cpt Marvel being in between IW and Endgame naturally granted it VIP rights to mass media's attention.
14:20 to be honest Zalem's true nature and how people do live there is,'t revealed until muuuuch later in the manga, like tome 5/6 or something iirc. So its actually a good thing that it stays that way in the movie. Now i agree with you that the 2 hours of screenplay wasn't enough for all the characters and exposure, and that fact that they added the motorball this early in the plot din't help, since hte motorball plot is supposed to happen weeks AFTER Yugo's death. Having a scene or two where you see some short races scene to show it would have been enough and keep the Motorball arc for another movie. This would have left more space for other things to be expanded on. Now while the movie as flaws, lets be honest it ain't perfect, as a Hardcore Gunnm fan since day 1 when i discovered the manga when i was 11yro, i am happy at how the movie turned out. Manga fans all know that its extremely difficult to adapt manga's to movie, and all the video games and manga adaptations we had for the last 2 decades, are either comicaly cheesy, or just plain horribly bad. here Alita manage's to be somewhat good and enjoyable, wich is in itself a huge achievement, thats why people are giving it a pass, and also to show support, that people WANTS a sequel, and that this time they do it better, it could end up worse, you never know whats gonna happen, but seeing that they did a decent job, if they keep it like this, i don't see any reasons why it should be worse. Off course the few changes that they did, will complicate things in the sequel, Nova been on Zalem and not on earth like in the manga, Koyomi been allready a teenager and not a babygirl like in the manga, where she would grow up like a wild indenpendant girl and meet/join the Barjack Rebellion army and many other things.
I enjoyed the live action Alita, after watching it I went home and watched the original anime and the live action movie was way better. Either way I still love both, hope they come out with a sequel.
Sign of the times. When an otherwise mediocre film gets elevated to awesome just cause the main character was well done...that being said I want more please.
I thought he was referring to Dyson Freeman, the guy who came up with the idea of a Dyson Sphere, and later helps come up with a way to make a real life Death Star (the Nicoll-Dyson Beam). He never did anything with cyborgs though.
It's a very good film. I've watched it twice. It's got a compelling plot, and the primary characters have an acceptable depth. Now I think I will watch it again.
I remember the 'critics' (looking at you RT) tearing this movie apart and praising Captain Marvel to the skies - almost as if they had a vested interest in wanting Alita to fail, and they almost succeeded in North America (and let's be honest, 9 outta 10 times it's that market that dictates whether a movie swims or sink), but luckily the foreign market sweeped in and voted with their wallets and gave a collective 'fuck you' to the critics. One of the most fun films I watched this year, would deffo catch the sequel if one were to be made.
Sadly, there was barely any marketing of Alita here in Asia. This would have easily reached half a billion if our advertisements weren't all about Captain Marvel. I watched Alita twice in the theatres, it has great rewatch value.
@@aronpieron9577 "it has great rewatch value" - so true, and this is one of the primary factors that seperates a good movie from a great movie, being able to watch it time and again and catching new details that were missed before, as well having a new perspective with each new watch. Good examples would be 'Aliens', 'the Thing (original one), Avengers (all 4 of them) etc. " there was barely any marketing of Alita here in Asia" - Agreed. I knew next to nothing about this movie and went in with no expectations, and thoroughly enjoyed it, and then recommended it to a bunch of friends, and all of them enjoyed it as well. It was after watching this that I wondered why I hadn't heard of it before, and went online to find out that it was bombing in N.America, and would not have a sequel, and then I made it a point to check up on it every few days over the next couple of weeks, and it was the Asian market, particularly China, which pushed the movie just over the 'profitable' line. With a production budget of 170 mil, it grossed approximately 80 mil in the States, and 320 mil in the foreign market, bringin it to 400 mil worldwide, very close to the 'it's earned a sequel' mark. What impressed me was that all the fan reviews were glowing, but the critics reviews were damning. Ergo, fuck the critics ╭∩╮(-_-)╭∩╮
What I loved was the take on the "strong woman" character. Yes Alita was a kick ass, never quit warrior but she was also the catalyst for two redemption arcs.
3 redemption arcs: Hugo, Chiren and Ido (who learned to let go of his death daughter and forgive himself and eventually allowed Alita to become an adult). Ido-Alita's father-daughter relationship was very touching.
what saddens me more than this "rough diamond" of a movie is, that basically no one knows the true masterpiece that is the original 9 volume short Manga. its one of the best and most complete things ever made visual novel.
Imo, the movie wasted this series most interesting character, Makaku. I am so mad that they turned him into a generic bad guy. I still think that it was a pretty interesting action movie. If Alita manage to have a sequel, I hope they dont destroy Zapan.
@@gungrave10 it was an all right movie but it had the best manga in history as source material so im still kinda underwhelmed. It probably wont get a sequel tho.
Exactly, I wish they went for being faithful to the manga instead of the OVAs. Alita didn't rival Berserk and Vagabond for nothing. And Last Order blew my mind so many times. From the world building, to the philosophy, to the characters and their stories, etc. When the story shifted to Sanguis's backstory, I was floored. No way any amount of sequels will do it justice, already ruined Jashugan's character.
Reason the Dr brought her back was because he longed to have a daughter again. He basically was still grieving his daughter who died in the cheesy flashback and when he found Alita he just thought, “May as well make another one.”
I really can’t finish this episode. I really enjoyed this film. It was a lot of fun, it’s an old manga onto the big screen done right. Also this film is a few issues of the manga crammed into one, I HIGHLY recommend people give this a watch👍

Any cyberpunk movie beats any shitty action stupid super hero movie.
Anyway, she has good taste
Alita has more personality in her artificial little finger than Captain Marvel has in total.
Captain Marvel is supposed to be stoic. Not saying I liked the movie though.
@@ressljs
Still far better than Captain derp.
She is the type of character that is all in or nothing, at this point of the story she's very Black Or White, this will change after Yugo's death and when she immerse herslef completly into the Motorball as a forward runaway to forget everything, even though the constant fighting, gives her more and more flashbacks of her former life, at wich point you discover that she is indeed from Mars, where she learned the Panzer Kunst( while in the movie it is established way earlier and more casually, in the manga, Ido knows about this MA, but he doesn't mention its origine)
After all this she's less Black & WHite and more Grey Moraly as a character, even though she upholds a strong sens of justice and she acts and promise to help anyone she can within the reach of her arms.
@Shaman X I'm triggered, stahp.
that scene made my heart ache. I'm lonely sad man.
Indeed. When I was 14 watching the anime, that part was so real to me. Of course as an adult it's silly, but it captures youth so well.

I'll give you 1 reason. Alita fell in love with a boy. Therefore, it wasn't shown holloywoods blessing.

She's not a human, she gets a pass
It's because Alita is the wrong kind of heroine: she's feminine and she's not ashamed of it. Women who actually behave like women are not the kind of thing SJWs want to exist.
@Jon W I agree with all of this. Thanks for elaborating. You put it better than I did.

Im a huge fan of this movie. Watching it I felt like a kid again. This was how they USED to make movies.
I totally agree. It was an amazing feeling watching this with so much new and interesting stuff to explore.

Rob T He did not rip on it at all. He said it was a good movie that also had plenty of flaws. Why don't you actually watch the video?
Agreed. I was BLOWN AWAY. I watched it THREE TIMES in the theatre. I haven't done that since Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Mask of Zorro.

"Jennifer Connelly seems to have no purpose in this movie whatsoever"
(shows scene where she's lying in bed wearing lingerie)
I... strongly... disagree.
Runi shes getting a little old for lingerie, just my opinion.
about Dr. Chiren Ido:
(there's some complex stuff going on here with her as I'll try to explain, which is why Jennifer Connely did such an amazing job, as she conveyed all of this complexity, mostly with actions, body language, facial expressions, and etc, as she had very little lines)
She loved her daughter Alita, and blamed her husband, Dr.

Yea, that’s the situation, the drinker didn’t necessarily make a good video here.

That’s wrong.
Shot Bro Yeah, he didn’t critique this movie that well.
Honestly, I remember watching it in theater and just having fun. Didn't have to think about anything outside the door, simply enjoyed the adventure
gonna have to agree with you on the manga part.
@@jase276 with Disney's acquisition of Fox, the Alita sequel is definitely going to be utter crap since they own the rights to the films IP now
I was going to reply, but this pretty much sums it up for me, so +1.
Nice review and while I do agree with most of it, let me clarify a few things:
1) Zalem doesn't float.
Was Ido called Dyson in the translation back then though?
@@davidkymdell452 His name was changed from Daisuke Ido to Dyson Ido in the movie. Much like how Yugo's name was changed to Hugo.

seriously she is so cute like a little puppy
Also he and Jennifer Connelly are still grieving for their daughter. Alita is a substitute that he even names after her
ye it does make since for me and he doesn't seem like the type of person who would be very suspicious of others the head didn't look particularly threatening and the spaceship is the cream of the crop tech on a sifi world it could probably last a little while under water and explaining I cant repair this body if it was broken might have been a discouragement from old doc not to peruse a violent lifestyle and at least it doesn't jerk you around like a death fake out and world builds the suit a little.

It's like finding a rare gem amidst shit these days
I'm thankful I took the chance to see this movie
Bsicdlgv The "anime" eyes was definitely distracting the first time I saw it. I was also leery of Christoph Waltz since I loved how great a villain he played in _Inglourious Bastards._
The second time removed all doubt -- there is a simple charm and fun to the movie that made it a breath of fresh air compared to Mary Sue characters.
While I was **really** wanting it to be a great solid 95% movie I feel it like it was only a solid 80% "good" movie due to how complexity and simplicity was forced it. Kind of wish it had been split into two movies for better pacing.
Overall a good movie to just kick back and enjoy.

Although there are some explanations in the film, they are weak.

Alita was a mediocre CGI mess that reminded me of Jupiter Ascending. But I agree that it felt like it was made by people who genuinely cared. A labor of love so to speak. @@maybehuman4 Mediocre: of moderate or low quality, value, ability, or performance
None of that is true, though is it? It's not like it's a perfect movie but it's not mediocre. Every major person involved in the film has a history of successful work and/or work that receives accolades so it doesn't seem fair to say none of them have the skill to make a great film or tell a compelling story. The only true problem with the story is that they tried to put too much in... probably because they wanted to make sure they got to a good stopping point (considering that one never knows if something is going to be able to get a sequel) and maybe because they wanted to keep the feel of how a manga would portray the story as much as they could. Despite that flaw, they still managed to make the story cohesive.

I started to notice when the last terminator never show Emilia Clark naked when she is always flashing her tits in Game of Thrones. It is a shock to my system because when they hide nudity it is a sign they are deliberately going out of their way to piss off men who watch these movies.
I actually loved this movie with all of its flaws, at least someone made something that is not a remake.
*Technically* it is a remake...
But I get your point 🤣
People had too high a standards when it comes to silver screen adaptation. The movie is decent and if i ever want something more in-depth, i read tge manga.
It is somewhat of a remake.
This movie left me wanting more in a good way.
read the manga. Its just great. All the problems of the movie are solved/better there. Anime is good also but the manga just reaches new highs.
A lot of people still want more.
@@konradplatt3833 yeah this is making me wonder if this is a sometimes implemented tactic in the animes that are released where the story of the anime is slightly off or ends early to the original manga in order to drive up sales of the manga because people want to finish the story
Your mind will be blown. :D
They better make a sequel! I'll fight someone! lol
The CG and effects work on this movie are stellar. People are seriously sleeping on this gem.
Totally agree. Phenomenal CG specially how the character Zapan was created on screen.
Ehh... I thought they were shit. Especially her face.
"This actor did a good job, that actor did a good job" no love for the VFX team
When CGI people act and move among REAL people, and you cant tell them apart, than it is spectacular.
@arno victor Compare that with Dark Fate versus Alita.
I watched this in the theater with my brother, had no idea it was a manga/anime, and knew nothing about it. I was very pleasantly surprised and absolutely loved it.
Totally forgot this movie came out this year...still better than Captain Feminazi.
I'd say they were equally bad & both should be avoided in order to keep from wasting your time.
Captain Feminazi perfectly embodys what happens when totally mediocre people get power.
Not even a smug attitude.
But plain direct arrogance and disrespect.
@@shitmandood lol go away now troll
@@Thane36425 I thought the space elevator was obvious.
@@TallicaMan1986 I've had to explain it to a lot of people. Few people seem to even know such a thing is a concept, let alone that designs for them exist, only that materials technology has a ways to go to build one.
But is this explained in the movie?
@@beardedbjorn5520 No, not in the movie, mainly because it's not relevant to plot at that particular time but also because the people of Iron City simply doesn't know about the existence of the orbital city and the whole equilibrium of forces to explain it, except maybe for Ido/Dyson. Also, explaining this concept this early would really feel superfluous on top of the already heavy world-building stuff present in the movie. The movie covered more or less the 3 first book of a series of 9 and this is discovered later in the series anyways.
He brought her back to life because he cared. Not just because he could.
Going by the manga, the 'flying' city is the severed lower end of a space elevator. It's not so much a city flying over the ground as being in geosynchronous orbit with a cable coming a very long way from that height that people are living on.
Sounds a lot like the Cradle from Seveneves - awesome!
And up the elevator lies another city called Jeru. It's not mentioned in the movie though if I remember correctly.
It's not severed, there's a second city at the top of the space elevator. You find out about it in the New Order series. But yes, it's all in geosynch orbit.
@@ShaftManlike As it was once connected to the ground and now is not, I'd call that severed.
Alita is a strong character who happen to be female, we need more like this
Alita the Hon.

That's because she was writen by a japanese guy 30 years ago, not sjw's trying to hit their check box list.
E;R is right though, she is Mary Sue-ish. She is simply not as obnoxious about that as Brye Larson or Ma-Rey Sue.

That "Discount Blade" label has aged considerably well.
Yes... very very well. I came to the comments as soon as I heard him say it.
I thought so too, but they announced the new Blade movie in July 2019, and this video is from November 2019.
Scottish Alita: "You're getting it in the sequel, ya bawlbag."
I move that Drinker writes the dialogue for all Hollywood films from now on.

That short wasn’t nearly as terrible as all you dramatists are making it - Lynne Lucero did nothing wrong

I remember watching this and wondering how much had been left on the cutting room floor. Probably enough to make three more movies.
The director cut away one third of Cameron's script. I think that a 3 hour Alita movie would have been best way to do it.
It was basically three arcs smushed into one movie. Love it tho.
Cameron already has several films planned out for Alita.
As a proud member of the Alita Army committed to making sure this movie gets a sequel, I sincerely appreciate the fair perspective.
Although a total slow burn, i thought Ad Astra was a terrific sci fi.
Alita Battle Angel was fine but 2001 a Space Odyssey was a masterpiece
100% Correct Nova626...
It's the Wonder Woman of anime adaptations. In all honesty, I'm uncertain whether Alita 2 will be as warmly welcome since it has a lot to say about class/wealth warfare via predatory practices, but it also explains a lot of the confusing things in Part 1.
@zoom zoom Gemini Man had SJW's politics in it? I didnt know.
"A rocket-powered battleaxe."
Whaaaa? That's a spike like an oversized warpick, not an axe.
That weapon kind of makes sense in this world, too. As a bounty hunter, you need to kill a whole bunch of cyborgs with thick armor plating, so a big spike with a rocket on the back would likely be a good tool to penetrate the thick armor and damage the internals.
Reminds me of the Super Sledge from Fallout 4.
More like a cyberpunk warhammer.
It's more of a War Maul, imo.
Final Fantasy 7 did come out 7 years after the original Battle Angel manga, so it's more likely that FF7 nicked ideas from this than the other way around.
I just finished watching Alita this evening. The film still holds up despite ending on a cliffhanger. We need a sequel and thankfully, Avatar 2 is a massive hit which gives James Cameron more leverage to get it made.
this movie was a huge wife win, that's all i care about.
I wished certain things were done differently and I agree it's a lot of script put together but I still enjoyed the movie and watched it couple of times
And let's not forget the amazing score and music by Junkie XL. The music is really overlooked I think and in my opinion it's one of the very strong positives of this movie.

The most unbelievable part of the movie is how Hugo, who lives in poverty, keeps his hair in such pristine condition.
I enjoyed the live action Alita, after watching it I went home and watched the original anime and the live action movie was way better. Either way I still love both, hope they come out with a sequel.
I went home after watching it and started an entire reread of the manga.

Wish she had a competent opponent though, fights seem one sided
