Again late to the party! Wish I'd watched this when I first obtained it. Oh well at least I'm here now.
I'm glad I watched this, thank you for shining a well deserved positive light on this film.
While I've not delved into alot of anime and not necessarily a fan I've seen enough that I realize western society doesn't really get it and it is hard to translate stories that are so bound in Japanese culture so western audiences will appreciate them.
This is why western critics even though quite a few liked it they still don't understand why the story line is so simple. The answer is it had to be so western audiences wouldn't be confused .
      We have expectations
Good vs evil or atleast not good vs evil
The anti-hero may be a bad person but they aren't evil.
Complaints about world building abound but how else are we going to get to know it, it doesn't exist until we can visualize it.
I'd never read the manga or watched the anime. Ì have watched some anime (because younger relatives)and yep anime can be a bit out there. Usually falling into two basic categories from what I've seen. Cute borderline sex fantasy without actual sex or dark and violent to the extreme.
I think Cameron did a good job along with his co-writer by keeping a simple cohesive story.
      Want several sequels.

My review on Alita battle angel:
The movie is BADASS, the CGI looked pretty real, but it does have practical effects in most of the movie. The actors were spectacular, especially alita, her development was very well paced in my opinion. I am surprised that they used robot blood and gore, which makes sense because most people are cyborgs in that time. Alot of people criticized the movie for being washed, but in real life the anime takes place in Kansas. The robot game was badass. I wish the movie had two parts and were 2 1/2 hours each. Overall I give the movie 8.5 out of 10

My only gripe was the change for somethings like gore as you mentioned and other small changes were ok. But one changes I liked was the motor ball scene they added, even though that should've been a bit later. Things did fit well if you never read the source material or watched the anime imo. I've since got into the manga, up to Mars Chronicle, saw the movie twice (once in 3D) and have bought the Blu-Ray (again, twice). Alita is such a good story that it really deserves to be widely seen, which is what my hope rest on.

Awesome movie. These Jim Cameron movies can't just be pumped out every couple years lol just like Avatar, Alita is certainly one of those films that pushes the technology of filmmaking way beyond where everybody originally was. 👍

This and, now surprisingly, Cyberpunk 2077 are really getting me into the cyberpunk genre of sci-fi. Alita’s story as, basically, a war machine from a bygone era reminds me of the story of the Gundam Barbatos mobile suit from the anime, Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans. I seriously hope that this movie gets a sequel.

as a kid, the anime alone made me a lifetime fan. caught it on the Encore anime channel, something like that, along with some other hidden gems. watching today, Alita would put on that coat, and i'm like, "she was practically selene before selene". haha, to think, james never had to make such changes, and he's still holding back. i still enjoyed the film, don't get me wrong. we need a sequel.

the moment that made me really like the movie version of alita was the moment when she was fighting in the underground lair and only had one arm left. once she used the films one and only f-bomb allowance and gouged grewiska's eye out I was sold on her as a character. such a shame she got buried under all the captain marvel PR nonsense. I feel like people were really desperately trying to make captain marvel a thing and tried to undermine Alita's validity as a good character. If you gave me a choice I'd follow Alita more than marvel any day of the week.

its so hard to find a good adaptation. I really think they did the anime and manga justice with the live action. i rarely if ever like live action remakes but this one.. i really REALLY DID. it can stand on its own as a film and it stayed rather true " afew changes yea" but that seems unavoidable going from multiple sources and episodes to a single movie.

Not only is Alita one of my favorite 2019 films but it’s a fantastic way of how to write a good female character in an era of feminist propaganda. Before Alita, I had never heard of the manga but this made me want to read it. I felt for the character, wanted to see her succeed despite all the tragic things that happen to her throughout the film. It’s a film I highly recommend.

I'm sure a lot of fans would agree that the sequel would be better off made in another studio for creative freedom because this is "disney" that we're talking about. But we'll see, just gotta have faith that the sequel will be faithful, uncorrupted & passionate like the 1st film.
