Justin Y. Right up there with Ghost in the Shell, and that’s a compliment. I really dug Scarlett and Euron Greyjoy (because his RL name is kinda complicated and I don’t want to butcher it) in that movie.
Here’s another plus: the color inversion between Alita’s doll body and the berserker body. The manga is in black and white, and the ova uses the same body from the start, so this change is all on the filmmakers. The doll body is white and gold, like ivory or porcelain. It looks pure, clean, and fragile. It looks like an expensive toy, like she could be wound up and let loose. The berserker body is the opposite, black and purple. It looks hard, flexible, and just shy of indestructible. You can tell at a glance that these two bodies are vastly different from one another in both shape and color. That’s a clever use of visual design.
I remember how in the manga we see Alita's first arms (similar to the arms of her first body in the movie) on another cyborg shortly before she gets murdered suggesting that maybe Ito is the serial killer that's going around and using the body parts to rebuild Alita.
Alita: Battle Angel is so underrated. They needed to pump this movie instead people really didn't know to much about it. I was very impressed with the CGI in this movie, especially the fighting scenes. This movie already has a cult following and it just came out. Hope they make a sequel.
It's very amazing when you heard about this film's making and its history... basically this Film was suppose to release in 2009, But James Cameron and a few of his crew members had to make a choice of what movie they wanted to do... well since it was 2009 we got avatar by him... but after a few years, In 2019 they began working on the Alita Film.. and they also had invited Yukito Kishiro (The Original Mangaka of Battle Angel: Alita)..
I love this movie and I want a sequel too but judging by how much money the movie made, it's still unpredictable. If only the movie made more money then there will be a sure sequel.
Or Alita hiding behind her hair immediately afterwards embarrassed being caught red-handed... And then him kindly standing a broken glass back upright as to say... “welp, I helped clean up this mess... at least a little... sorry!” 😂. Almost every moment of this movie is a win, lol!
another awesome detail that isn't pointed out - why would he give free repairs to basically his rivals ? it has to be due to the fact that he wants criminals dealt with, which adds another layer/further emphasizes one to the character - risking his income so the hunters could get more "bad-guys" off the streets
@J G the question was rhetorical as i answered it myself, using the "question" as an introduction to the point i was making. But if i were genuinely asking, i appreciate you answering
"It's live action anime" is the best description I can think of. Even moments like the tear being cut in half that I outright laughed at I *enjoyed* that. It felt right for an anime adaptation. Hollywood anime adaptations could all learn from this fantastic film and I *desperately* want that sequel that they baited with that cliffhanger ending.
It was really made with love, man. James Cameron has been waiting to make this movie for the longest! I remember how intensely passionate he’s talked about it, especially on Attack of the Show.
I love the scene when Nova in Vectors body is dying, he played it so well, as to have such confidence while falling because it's not his body, what does he care if Vector dies.
This isn't mentioned often, but I like how they explain the lack of guns being the entirety of combat in he movie, which would otherwise be a logic flaw.
The manga has a ton of guns, but then dont work on kunzlers like alita, kunzlers are the jedi equivalent in this world they could deflect bullets like nothing. Keep in mind all kunzlers use strengthened cyborg bodies and use vibration techniques to deflect the momentum out of numerous types of bullets. Only way to really kill them is to shoot their eyes or mouths
@@NeostormXLMAX you mean Künstler its german for artist , and your only way to kill them is just stupid, you have to destroy the brain ore brainchip and backup brain
I'm not a manga or anime fan, I've never read a comic book in my life, but I loved this movie. I've never heard of Alita before, but fortunately the movie doesn't require you to.
Perfect way to introduce a new audience to your Anime/Manga. Do not leave out a lot and don't change much. You can determine the pace from the length of the Manga/Anime. I feel dragonball live adaptation would have been done this way. From the day Napa and Vegita arriving on earth to when Goku finally defeats Frieza it would have been great.
@Radio Kaos I understand but I don't know both the Manga or Anime so it was a good intro to the Anime because that's where I start and started with a lot of other ones. Most people don't read but would watch any story! I think if they did the whole two DBZ: Battle of the Gods and the Golden Freiza one as Live adaptation and basically did everything like they did in the movies it would have worked well! That Dragonball Evolution pretty much messed with any attempt at a live adaptation at least for the next 5 years unless the actual Japanese make it.
THIS is what I all ways felt this channel was for. To bring attention to movies that should get more love, and attention they they did in the theaters. While I understand there is only so much you can cover, and do not have any issues with covering movies that did well, this is why I come here. Hell yes more, nuff said on that.
i agree but disagree, i think its nice that he shows the good parts in a movie that personally did not like because of both the story and some of the acting
Absolutely. I feel like he does a lot superhero films, which I guess get a lot of views, but everyone knows about them already. Films like Alita sort of went under the radar, but deserve more love.
It is an amazing manga still ongoing after 30 years. Sadly it never got much fame because the short anime OVA kinda flopped in Japan and James Cameron bought the animemation rights with the adaptation rights in the late 90s, so it never had the change to get a newer, more mainstream adaptaion. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is also an ancient manga with a 90s OVA adaptation but managed to get quite the second wind with the TV show in the 2010s.
"I do not stand by in the presence of evil", is comparable to "With great power, comes great responsibility". Alita has so much heart... perhaps the most I've seen. I believe she is who she is. A lot of films never do that. She must have another film. I'm never sure how still being in the top ten for this year makes it disappointing financially.
At least exclusively looking at this one movie, she’s exactly what Supergirl Kara Zor-el should be (no shade on Melissa Benoist): I believe the characters bettering themselves just for knowing her and the earnestness Rosa gives the character
ArnoldsK the beginning was awesome. Seeing her wake up and having to figure out shit was just as entertaining as any of the action scenes... at least for me anyways.
As live action Manga and/or anime goes, I think they did AMAZING. I felt like I was watching Anime, and then had my mind blown when I realized Alita is played by the same actress from CHIPs, the little, super cute CHP officer :)
@not that serious the source material is for me also way better, but what we got put into one movie with the thought to appeal to a western audience, I think the movie did justice to the original. A huge part of the manga is the concrete confrontation with different philosophies in a dystopian world where everyone has to find his place. If that would have been picked for the movie I think it would have been way more complicated to follow the movie or rather one of the originals core elements. For me the movie felt very much anime despite some criticism I had towards the movie. I hope so much that if a second part is in the making, they do Desty Noca justice. He is such a unique antagonist in the original, that I hope they won't just make him the generic mad scientist. Because being mad and a scientist he has so much value to the universe, he needs to be the way he was in the manga. And I hope Alita will go on suffer the losses she had until now. Because the journey of Alita is road of sorrow and is as important for me as everything else in this piece of art. Alita is by far my most favorite female protagonist in modern media. If someone knows other well made female characters. I would appreciate it (like Toph from ATLA e.g.)

Not once did her eyes feel weird to me. Maybe because I watch a lot of anime? Like my brain doesn't even really notice that her eyes are bigger, yet i see so many people talking about it.
I wont lie, they did bother me.... for like, the first minute or so but then, not only did I see that they fit but they made her so much better to look at. Her smile at the start, her expressions in general just were amped up so much more
Her eyes have more soul than the rest of the cast with normal eyes, she was beautiful for me and I don't watch that much anime I found the normal humans non CGI eyes to be very small xD weird ha?
I didn't know of the Manga or the Anime before watching this. I immediately realized it was based of a Manga as soon as Dr Dyson mentioned "Panzerkunst", but otherwise, had no idea. I went into it expecting a stupid, but beautifully made action piece. And... I got a beutifully made action piece, with almost absurdly great acting. Far greater than the plot has any right to have. I was impressed with the lot - except Keean Johnson, and I'm torn between dismissing his acting capacity for the part, or if the part was so incoherently that no one could've pulled it off sensibly - particularly Rosa Salazar. I hadn't seen her before, and holy shit, what an actress she is. As a former theater actor I look a lot at how characters act with their bodies, and her acting in just her movement patterns throughout the movie is some of the best I've seen. As for Alita being overpowered... Well, yes, from a physical standpoint, she is probably the single strongest character in the entire movie. But to me that didn't really matter. She's a human superweapon designed by a civilization beyond the understanding of most living people in the setting of the story, of course she's going to be powerful. But she's also a horrible judge of character, has a short fuse, and initially hopelessly lost in the world she's woken up to. She might be strong, but she is far from perfect. Looking at it, at the end of this movie she failed to do what she intended. She failed to save her love interest from death, and she didn't even get to take down the big bad guy as recompense. This swiftly turns this movie into an action tragedy, and I'm not going to complain about a big movie daring to do that.
Keean Johnson just doesn't fit well in the movie, his character looks too much cliche' it feels like I'm watching a high school drama. I hope his character doesn't come back in the second movie.
I love that unlike most anime movies you don't need any backround knowledge to love it. I have never read the manga or seen the anime but loved the movie. I hope it gets the second and third movies that the director said he wants but we need disney to renew it and i just hope they use common sense and build on this world. I love the detail and the cast is just perfect in my mind. Yes, there was a sence of uncanny valley but that wore off for me in about 20 minutes.
I loved how your research into the source material and comparing it to this movie. Not many put that much devotion to getting one's facts straight. I call that a win!
By far the most legendary movie I have ever seen in 10 years, thank you so much to junkiexl, robert rodriguez, rosa salazar and all the rest of cast and crew for making this movie as epic as it is. Alita is beautiful very beautiful and so very badass.
Before I start, I wanna say that I never ever heard of Alita before this movie. When I went to see this movie in the cinema, I was like 'meh' when I walked in. I walked out in a haze of pure delight. I couldn't get the movie out of my head so I saw it again and again on an illigal site. Then I went to see it again in Imax. I saw it a total of 14 times or so in 2 weeks. This is my favorite movie of all time and I hope it gets a sequel. Btw, props if you read all this shit, thumbs up to you!
I actually watched this movie because a sibling of mine had been a fan of the anime/manga and was excited, and so went in with no foreknowledge of anything but that it was based off of something they liked, and i tagged along just because I felt like going out at the time. I left the theater a fan. I felt it was amazing and being a fan of manga and anime of many types myself i thoroughly enjoyed the feel of a cgi anime film rather than the stereotypical drawn animation feel that you typically see. I know that it will take me forever to get into the manga and anime for this belatedly but for now i will start with the novelization of the movie and go from there.
@@rameshgovalam2071 I understand as an avid bookworm that no media adaptations usually live up to the source material if said source material is well made in and of itself but that does not make it immediate crap, the adaptations can be good even if they are not AS good as the original source. I have seen a lot of adaptations of favored or even amazing works that were disappointing as a fan of the original work most notably Ella Enchanted, Twilight, City of Bones, and The Giver. but there are some that are good ONLY if you aren't comparing it to the original like Eragon, and extremely rarely that are a good tribute to the original like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Now while I personally have not gotten into any variation of the source of this particular movie I know people who were and I can say it is not an embarrassment to the source like Ella enchanted and Eragon, but I also do not believe it is as bad a disappointment to the MAJORITY of fans like Twilight or City of Bones, or especially The Giver. it definitely made me INTERESTED in the source material when such an undertaking is practically an occupational commitment at this point considering the shear volume of content to go through but considering I would not have given it even a thought of a chance before the movie should make the movie more valuable to fans of the source than trash even to ones such as you who find it disappointing that they had to make necessary cuts and modifications to adapt if to the medium. if you cant accept some differences than why the heck are you even bothering to check out anything but the source material if you cant accept the limitations of screen adaptations. Don't just label things as 'Trash' just because it wasn't the impossible dream you imagined it to be, instead of logically taking a step back and accepting the realities and limitations of the production business and movies in general.
I just wanted to point out that u forgot to mention that despite the big uncanny eyes on alita they kept it consistent with all the beserkers having big eyes in the flash backs.
This movie was a beautiful surprise. I thought it was going to be a typical reboot/reimagining that wouldn't be too outstanding, but boy was I wrong. Alita is adorable once she shows her personality. She feels real and you feel for her. She's a badass and I don't care if she's overpowered because she still has character and even has moments where she's weak and can only try and push through. Not to mention the end song was amazing. The lyrics "what is the point of lips if I don't make noise?" and "staying silent's the same as dying" are a wonderful description of Alita and gets me hyped to see more. When she pointed her sword at Nova, challenging him, I was pumped and ready to see her wreck all of Zalem. If this doesn't get a sequel I'll riot!
Alita's first fight in this movie was so refreshing and new as well as amazingly well coreographed, it legitimately caught me by surprise, and i was speechless. This clean, tight coreography in this movie was just incredible to witness for the first time, even the avengers movie didn't have such that as such a strongpoint. Just amazing
Loved this video, thank you. Alita Battle Angel is currently my absolute FAVORITE Movie EVER. Lost count of the number of times my wife and I have watched it. I hope for a sequel too.
Honestly, I see Alita’s eyes being one, or both, of two things I can very easily reason away. 1.) It’s clearly James Cameron giving homage to the anime genre that he’s been such a huge fan of for so many years, and evidence to me that he focused on giving as much quality detail to this risky creative choice as he possibly could. 2.) As soon as I saw the Battle for Luna flashback and the film established that other UMF Berserkers had a similar appearance to Alita, I honestly just came to a presumption that the eyes, much like the design of the entire Berserker body, is simply an aesthetic choice that the UMF adopted for their troops. From what I could tell, UMF tech was established in the movie to be very clearly distinct in both appearance and function from anything else on Earth. The way I see it, it could be the case that when the UMF designed these cybernetic bodies for their troops, they wanted to make themselves as distinct from their enemy as possible. To not just look like a cybernetically augmented human, but to look clearly and distinctly MARTIAN.
I never ever had a movie make me feel like I did while I viewed it. My heart was racing like I was along side her in battle. Absolutely crazy!! I need a sequel people please demand a sequel!
@@DavidRay_40 No, but it's already out for digital download so technically an EGA video (or two. Or three, given how long the movie is) could be done on it.

@TonyFilip917 The 170 million dollar production budget doesn’t include the advertising costs and other small things. Plus movie theaters take a portion of the money. I’d say that at very best the movie needed 300 million dollars to be profitable and at worst 450 million, it depends.
Makes sense since Carol wasn't human in her memory, she was Kree because she had been mind-wiped and brainwashed/conditioned into their rank and file structure. Alita was raised into a human world with childish mannerisms.
@@AhsokaTanoTheWhite I'll be honest I am not well versed in Alita battle angel, I only know what I've seen in the Film. Also I can't wait for Season 7 of Clone wars
That's because critics don't care about art and are just selling themselves and/or their ideologies. Checking out how great of an adaption it is would take too much of their precious time.
That's not saying much since anime adaptions are so trash. Ghost in the Shell was boring. I don't even consider this movie all that good. The action and cgi was amazing but the story was wack.
This movie is a quite excellent adaptation. Though I also liked the live action Cromartie High School movie too and not just because it has a great banana peel joke.
it was meh, pretty generic in situations characters and dialogues (i liked "fuck your mercy" though, lol) and they build so much hype about the city only to end with an open ending which was honestly insulting
I loved this movie. When I went to see it in theaters, I hadn't read the manga. (Had always wanted to, but never made time for it.) Upon leaving the theater, I went home and spent the next three weeks doing basically nothing but reading the entire run of Gunnm and Gunnm Last Order. And reading the manga all the way through just gave me a greater appreciation for the movie. However, there is one point that I just couldn't mesh with. Having read the manga now, and understanding who all the characters are and where their movie counterparts are based from, I hate the fact that the movie uses Nova the way it does. Don't get me wrong, Edward Norton is indeed always a win, and it's always a joy to see him show up to play, but the character of doctor Desty Nova in the manga is so fascinatingly strange and unique, and so vastly different from what he is used for in the movie. Spoilers from here on: In the movie, Nova is the evil puppeteer controlling the world from behind the scenes from his ivory fortress of Zalem. He is never seen until the final shots of the film and when he interacts with others through his various puppets, he's very cold and calm. As he himself claims at one point, the only form of entertainment he has is watching mortals die. In the manga however, Nova is far less restrained. He is the definition of a Mad Scientist, who studies karma as a quantifiable thing. He believes fiercely in freedom, even going so far as to upgrade his nemesis Alita on more than one occasion just to see what she will become and how she will influence the world around her. He is insane, but in a very practical way, he has no compunction about murdering dozens, if not hundreds of people, but he is shown to have the capacity for true, genuine love under different circumstances.
THANK YOU, I love this movie. I've never seen the anime or read the manga but this movie had me so intrigued on the first watch that I really hope we get a sequel. It's one of my favorites of the last couple of years!
Maybe because it is so hard to find a good anime especially when you grow up. More good manga some with stunning character development and stories others with stunning art or all of those. Could recommend a few exceptional ones if you want. I used to spend more time finding actually good anime and manga than watching them. I went into the movie knowing nothing about Alita just that its based on a manga/anime. I think the movie is amazing, it has scenes that make the characters real just enough that you care, which is what most adaptaions fail to do, give characters time to develop. Also my gf isnt a fan of anime (except Death note, duh) and she really liked the movie!
This is one of those movies for me, that is enjoyable to watch multiple times. Sometimes while i'm drawing I'll have it playing in the background. It's good entertainment and some great technical achievements. I hope there is a sequel coming.

Loved the movie. Cameron kept the elements that were good about the manga and the ova respectively and removed the stuff that would've messed up the pacing. The manga had a different atmasphere, style and pacing. The movie is closer to the ova, but better. Really hope we get a sequel one day.
This movie was an excellent pallet cleanser after Ghost in the Shell. I'm honestly still reeling from how goddamn smoothly they pulled this adaptation off.

The thing I liked about this is that Alita actually had a struggle, unlike most female led movies. She's a unique character in the world that grows in the story. That's why the emotional beats are so impactful. I love this movie!

This isn't mentioned often, but I like how they explain the lack of guns being the entirety of combat in he movie, which would otherwise be a logic flaw.
@jediphilosopher Sshhhh... (wink, wink)... spoilers!

A fun fact: director Robert Rodriguez made the chocolate that Alita bit into. Not only is he a talented director, he loves cooking.

The beginning was slow but I enjoyed the movie overall a lot.
They nailed the live action adaptation.

This is my first introduction to Alita Battle Angel. This movie rocked hardcore
Also when she founds the berserker body Ido makes clear that it is more powerfull than anything else in Iron City
Keean Johnson just doesn't fit well in the movie, his character looks too much cliche' it feels like I'm watching a high school drama. I hope his character doesn't come back in the second movie.
perma Don’t worry. Hugo is not revived in the manga from this point but very occasionally appears in Alita’s flashbacks.

Spoilers from here on:
In the movie, Nova is the evil puppeteer controlling the world from behind the scenes from his ivory fortress of Zalem.

Alita in the underground vs Grewishka is HARD-FRICKIN-CORE. No doubt my favorite part of the movie
Loved the movie.
Cameron kept the elements that were good about the manga and the ova respectively and removed the stuff that would've messed up the pacing.
The manga had a different atmasphere, style and pacing. The movie is closer to the ova, but better.
Really hope we get a sequel one day.
Finally this movie is getting the credit it deserves.I watched the movie on its 3rd week in prime cinemas and watched it 12x on a dollar cinema.
This movie was an excellent pallet cleanser after Ghost in the Shell. I'm honestly still reeling from how goddamn smoothly they pulled this adaptation off.
I’ve watched this film so many times over. Easily one of my favourite films of all time
Does this guy realize hes saying positive things about a movie, On the Internet?!?!
I'm pretty sure that's illegal in 2019. You're only supposed to talk like that to your friends. If its online and the movie is based on an anime or video game you're supposed to be derisive.
But in all seriousness I liked the movie and i liked this video. I watch anime but i never saw this one, and I dont read manga. Still a very enjoyable movie.
yee its illegal mate hes going to jail to 20 years if youtube finds out.
I am a 59 yr old jazz pianist expat living in Copenhagen. I don't even know what manga or anima is. But I get that this is an extrodinary cenimatic experience. I live on the barest shoestring budget ;self enforced . So I haven't seen it yet. Intrigued!
Never heard of the Anime/manga... but loved, Loved, LOVED this film!!!
i want a sequel, i knew nothing about this when i saw it and i wanted more by the end
Just like the original anime. It was only an hour long. The story concept is amazing.

Definitely one of the best films of '19, absolutely adored Alita
4:53 “are those just fountains?” PFFT I LOVE YOU
Alita walking under water, and then taking a mild breathe when she comes up in the sunken URM ship was a visual masterpiece in my opinion and should've been talked about, but you nailed everything else I hoped you would mention. Great vid. Let's get our sequel!
Damn I love this movie, I saw it twice in the cinema, bought it as soon as I could and watched it again on a real long plane fight
Twice? Hah!
*laughs in 6 cinema tickets*
there's also a guy who watched Alita 19 times at the theater
watched 2 4DX and 1 IMAX 3D, wallet is dead af after watching 3 times
Hi, semi-Anime fan here, I watched the 90's OVA when I heard about the movie and fell in love with the story and character. I really liked the movie, I thought it was great and I'm glad I saw it in theaters, and I also hope we get a sequel.
The thing I liked about this is that Alita actually had a struggle, unlike most female led movies. She's a unique character in the world that grows in the story. That's why the emotional beats are so impactful. I love this movie!
Well, I am a fan of the manga, and I have to say, this was even better than the manga. I need a sequel like I need air.
Didn't hurt that it made 3x more than it's predicted box office draw. I'm seriously hoping that they do make a sequel. I want that asshole Nova to die slowly.
I just watched this on a plane and I immediately came to see if you had done this video.
Ah
Safe travels
What planes are you one were they have real movies
@@EveryoneElseIsWeirdImNormal any decent airliner coach has movies nowadays
@@godspeed2272 not were I'm from there'd just a couple tv's in the middle of the plane and you plug in head phones into your chair and all the things on the tv are made for 5 year olds
dude actually same though
really helps a 13 hour flight
Having no previous history to the series even being a anime fan, this swept me off my feet. Outstanding movie. So well envisioned and executed. Only point you made I didn't agree with is the face. I thought it was perfect. This movie needs a sequel even if they have to do it as anime.
The way they did this movie was incredible. The moment I was sold was when she does the martial arts in the mirror and I recognized the effort they put in to get it right
In the five months between when Rosa was choosen and when they began filming, she put herself through a grueling regiment to learn martial arts.
@@ethenallen1388 exactly!! And it really translated into the scenes
"I'm surprised the swastika came out so easily."
I had to stop the vid because I was laughing too hard.
Btw. where was the "Christoph Waltz is always a win" - win? I mean... he is I ****ing Christoph Waltz for crying out loud ^^
His blood curdling screaming during that scene was epic....
Damn, I was planning on adding a comment for both of those but you beat me to it
...in strict honesty I would’ve watched this movie 100% if I’d known Christopher Waltz was in it, just because it’s great to see him in yet another good movie.
My older brother took me into this movie with no foreknowledge, and I greatly enjoyed the ride.
i didnt know anything of the anime or manga but i freaking loved this movie and NEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDD a sequel in my life
2022 plz
read the manga.

This was an outstanding movie, even when you see the fx breakdowns and realize just how insanely detailed Weta went with little touches we never even see, such as Alita's inner mechanics are fully rendered but never seen. It deserved to do better than it did but as more time passes the less likely it seems that we're going to see the story continue in this form
