I always felt empathy for Sil as she is trying to figure out who/what she is. I also wonder what would have happened if they hadn't tried to kill her as a child and put her into a survival mode. She might be a biological weapon to wipe out the human race but I felt for her having to go through so much alone. (that train scene when she pupates, the young actress did a great job portraying terror at what was happening to her!)

People watching this movie frequently point out the two possibilities behind sending the information used to create sil - either a goodwill gesture that went horribly wrong because of the way she was raised and how she was treated, or a deliberate bioweapon - the latter being more strongly implied by the inclusion of that unlimited energy technology, which could be viewed as either a good will gesture or something intended to be viewed as such to convince humanity to create sil when provided with the genetic information, with the real purpose of the energy source being to protect the planet from further damage from humans prior to some kind of colonization
However, nobody really considers a third possibility - that sil wasn't intended as a weapon in and of itself, but more of a test to see how well humans would treat her and by extension how they would react to whatever species sent the information. Something along the lines of 'treat her well, help her integrate well and peacefully and she won't wipe you out, treat her badly, as some kind of experiment as they did, and she'll not be well socialized and will be more inclined to reproduce and kill off humanity. a bit like that final test from the 100. Fail and you get wiped out as a kind of preemptive self defense. I mean why else would they send the information in the first place? They had to know what humans would do with it. Under this view of the situation the aliens sending that energy technology could be seen as sending a gesture of good will and determining whether humans essentially do the same by how things go with sil

I love that you mentioned Sil's existential crisis. It adds a surprising amount of depth to the film, and I would never have guessed Henstridge was a first-time actress with zero experience, because she adds these subtle layers so well in this film.
While Laura does speculate the Sil would make an excellent bioweapon to wipe out humanity, she also notes that Sil was raised in isolation as a genetic experiment instead of a person. "She wasn't exactly smothered with a mother's love or taught good manners." Leaving it very nebulous how malevolent by nature Sil is, and thus how malevolent the aliens that sent the message are.
There's some surprising depth to this film, if you want to look for it.

I'm sure Monica belluci in the brothel scene had nothing to do with it.
Edit. Well I'll be damned, I was hesitant on re-watching it because I was scared to wipe the dust off my nostalgia goggles, I thought it might have aged poorly. Turns out, I was wrong. This movie still holds up to this very day. Yes the CGI is choppy alot but the overall story, action, and characters are still extremely solid. There's many really good choreographed fight scenes. Whoever was handling them certainly knew how to nail it. Many years later, I'll still recommend it to anyone.

I remember growing up watching this franchise how are my introduction to the franchise was species too the sequel I didn't watch species three as much and species four was like something else anyway hey the first two were not so bad and they definitely appeal to sci-fi horror you can say that they definitely have credibility and are very good at that it's just that the other the last two were just they were basically made for TV stuff and not as good in some areas still you got to give it respect good it does give you what you want in certain ways please do it one on the sequel species too cuz it is a direct sequel and does continue the story just no Forest Whitaker.

I read that efforts were made to disassociate Giger's contribution to the movie, removing his name from the credits and trying not to pay him for his work. Regardless of the merits of this film, and it's one I've always liked, it saddens me that an artist of Giger's stature should have been stiffed by the studio execs (or whoever). May he rest in peace and hopefully is free at last from his terrifying dreams.

Less of a shotgun and more like a grenade launcher... In actuality it is a 37mm smoke/flare launcher which are easier to get and can look very similar to 40mm military grenade launchers.

40mm "beehive" rounds would be the answer to what is used in the film.
Looks like a grenade launcher but has multiple projectiles in 1 round
