OMG, Natasha Henstridge was everyone's wet dream back in 1995! Also This was the first film to use Motion Capture Technology as Richard Edlund and his VFX company Boss Films Studio help create the technology.
I always felt empathy for Sil as she is trying to figure out who/what she is. I also wonder what would have happened if they hadn't tried to kill her as a child and put her into a survival mode. She might be a biological weapon to wipe out the human race but I felt for her having to go through so much alone. (that train scene when she pupates, the young actress did a great job portraying terror at what was happening to her!)
That was Michelle Williams as the younger Sil, before she went on to be in ‘Dawson’s Creek’ and eventually many other things that gained her some serious acclaim like ‘My Life with Marilyn.’
that restroom spinal cord ripping scene that aired on national television terrified me when i was a weeeeeee lad. I refused to use public restrooms for a year.
She didnt kill him because he was diabetic though. She tried to leave, but he wouldn't let her, and so she gave him the kiss of death. Admittedly, she does start flying off the handle right after this and goes on a rampage haha
@@filmcomicsexplained Oh yeah...she told him to take her back(to the club?) I’m guessing. He tried to manhandle her, which isn’t the right way to treat an extraterrestrial lady ha!
Yeah. At that point she only killed when she was scared, but her psychopathic human side took over and when you have this type of secret, it is not good.
Unfortunately for film fans we rarely get good creature features like this anymore , thanks for covering some great old films hopefully a younger generation can watch some of these and appreciate how good they were back in the day.
Species was the first boxset of films I ever bought for myself. It wasn't for the family, it wasn't a gift for someone else, and it wasn't a cartoon or anime like what I would typically watch at the time. I bought it because I'd watched on late night TV once and I was a hormonal 20 year old that finally had money from his first job. It's admittedly been quite a few years since I last watched any of them, but I think I enjoyed all but the 4th film.
Side note I’ve notice you used a clips of what looks like modern adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 in past videos could you cover it on wether it does justice to the book or what flaws it has in adaptation and execution please and thank you
Sil is super resilient and in order to actually kill her. her body must be completely destroyed. although she can Regenerate and heal from wounds quickly. She can be physically harmed and appears to be especially weak to Fire.
People watching this movie frequently point out the two possibilities behind sending the information used to create sil - either a goodwill gesture that went horribly wrong because of the way she was raised and how she was treated, or a deliberate bioweapon - the latter being more strongly implied by the inclusion of that unlimited energy technology, which could be viewed as either a good will gesture or something intended to be viewed as such to convince humanity to create sil when provided with the genetic information, with the real purpose of the energy source being to protect the planet from further damage from humans prior to some kind of colonization However, nobody really considers a third possibility - that sil wasn't intended as a weapon in and of itself, but more of a test to see how well humans would treat her and by extension how they would react to whatever species sent the information. Something along the lines of 'treat her well, help her integrate well and peacefully and she won't wipe you out, treat her badly, as some kind of experiment as they did, and she'll not be well socialized and will be more inclined to reproduce and kill off humanity. a bit like that final test from the 100. Fail and you get wiped out as a kind of preemptive self defense. I mean why else would they send the information in the first place? They had to know what humans would do with it. Under this view of the situation the aliens sending that energy technology could be seen as sending a gesture of good will and determining whether humans essentially do the same by how things go with sil
Maaaaan!! My dad and I used to watch this movie all the time back in ybe day when it would be airing on USA Network once or twice a month. We always got a kick out of those movies they'd play on repeat on that channel, some real classics. Lots of good memories ❣️
This made me think - excellent work! The behind the scenes images of the model making were great. There's a lot more depth to the Sil character than you realise!
i remember the big deal back in high school and college when these two films came out, especially because 'SIL' is originally from about 4 hours down the highway, in Springdale NL. Not a bad cpl flicks.
I definitely watched this way too young. The lab scene of a rapidly growing thing and turning into tentacle puberty scared the heck out of me. Though now I’ve been intrigued with sci-fi ever since. Great video.
I remember there being an Outer Limits episode with the "sexy alien kills through seductive woman" idea around the time, but I can't remember it exactly.

I love that you mentioned Sil's existential crisis. It adds a surprising amount of depth to the film, and I would never have guessed Henstridge was a first-time actress with zero experience, because she adds these subtle layers so well in this film. While Laura does speculate the Sil would make an excellent bioweapon to wipe out humanity, she also notes that Sil was raised in isolation as a genetic experiment instead of a person. "She wasn't exactly smothered with a mother's love or taught good manners." Leaving it very nebulous how malevolent by nature Sil is, and thus how malevolent the aliens that sent the message are. There's some surprising depth to this film, if you want to look for it.
This was the type of movie i would not expect these star vlass actors to be on. 8nfact, id say they are the ones who really brought attention to the films and made it what it is.
So basically species was about a sexy chameleon xenomorph that wanted to spread throughout Humanity by mating with humanity and would hide within Humanity. F****** brilliant. Is it weird I kind of want this to be Canon to the xenomorph universe?

Sil is highly adaptable and possesses Extreme Regenerative Capabilities. in her Alien Form she has deadly tentacles that shoot from her Breast. and she can pierce skulls with her tongue. Her instincts are finely tuned. and she has Superhuman Strength and Speed.
This was a good movie. It got a little over the top at points, but I liked all the little details, like her having to feed to get through her metamorphosis, and the absolute lack of morality. Which I never really understood. Teach your secret human experiments some basic morality, people! Mewtwo wouldn't have murdered the entire lab if he had been raised right!
