- This video is about how to make your own bread at home. This easy bread recipe costs only 45p to make the dough. And there is nothing like homemade bread and in the video I will show you how to make bread from scratch.
300g / 10.5oz Strong Bread Flour 0.24p
185g / 6.5 fl oz warm water 0.00p
7g / 0.25oz Dried yeast 0.16p
2 tbsp veg oil 0.02p
1 tbsp sugar 0.02p
1 tsp salt 0.00p
Total cost 0.45p
Each bun is 0.07p
Mix the sugar - yeast and water together and let it stand for about 15 mins, until it froths on the top.
Put the flour and salt into a bowl.
Add the wet ingredients and the oil.
Bring it together and turn it out onto a floured board.
Kneed for a full 10 mins.
Put it back in an oiled bowl, cover and leave it to prove for 1 hour in a warm place.
Take it out of the bowl, knock the gas out and divide it into 6 equal pieces and roll into balls.
Allow it to rest under a tea towel for a further 15 mins.
Shape into buns and allow to prove for a further hour.
Place on a baking tray and bake in the oven at 180c / 356f / gas 4
for 12 - 15 mins
I hope you enjoy this easy homemade bread recipe and at only 7p per bun it really is baking on a budget.
I make my own bread all the time. I've never made buns or rolls. Nothing is as nice as fresh bread and real butter!
Yes freshly made bread is best all it needs is a little butter or a bowl of soup. Thanks.
And in Oz you pop a bit of Vegemite on top of the butter...irresistible!
@@Shiny54Have never tried Vegemite. I may have to try some.
My mom used to do this but divide it more twelve to fifteen then stretch one out & drop it into a frying pan of oil. Golden flip, about 1-2 minutes each side. Plop it in a bowl of sugar or sugar & cinnamon or powder sugar. Fried bread dough, YUM! She called it grebble❤
@@marshawargo7238That sounds amazing!!!
I love how you cost everything out. My husband bakes all our bread.
I can't stand commercial bread.
Homemade is always best, right out of the oven with a little butter, nothing better.
In America most of our bread has soy in it. Actually most of our processed food has soy in it. I'm allergic. I need to learn how to make these.
Your channel should be one of the top on RUclips. Your recipes are amazing and very budget friendly. With the economy the way it is, good, inexpensive meals are a god send!
Thanks a lot, and I agree even in hard economic time, with a little effort you can still eat well.
nothing beats homemade buns, people don't realize how much you can save by making your own on a Sunday, we had a bread fixing scandal here in Ontario, bread has gone from 69c to $3.00 over the years, I now make our own every week. You could watch a you tube video while waiting for the dough to rise !!!
I agree, one bun in the supermarket here was the same as the cost for the 6 of the ones I made. It is just about organising your time.
I lived in Toronto until '84 and have been back many times to visit family. I now live in Sydney (Australia, not NS!), and trust me when I say our bread is woeful compared to yours! It ranges from cheap white squiggy to stupidly expensive 'artisan' loaves and they all leave me amazed that, for a country with such good meat, fruit and veg, we have such rubbish bread. Forget pumpernickel, or rye with caraway - we can't even get basic bread right! (Ever been to Dimpflmeier's at Kipling and Dundas in Etobicoke? It is bakery HEAVEN!!) There. That's my little rant done, now back to this video and yet another book on bread baking that I've got from the library. Cheers and happy baking to you from Oz!!
Also in Oz and agree! Oh for a good pumpernickel.
@@Shiny54 Aldi have pumpernickel from Germany in Au.
Treated myself to a bread maker in the January sales. Never going to buy shop bread again
Homemade is always best. Thanks for watching.
Sir I hope you get millions of subscribers as you are a GOOD MAN.....!
BLESS YOU....X❤
Ps....Will you be doing hot cross buns for Easter please x
Thanks very much, I hope I do too. But I have missed the deadline for easter and the hot cross buns, but they are on the list and I will be doing them soon. Thanks a lot.
Looking forward to your hot cross buns.
Fantastic news...!
Please put the cross on....non of this tick ✅ rubbish.....
Loving your videos.....❤😊🎉x
Getting better and better and better, Dave. Wonderful stuff....!! 😋
Thanks very much, I have a load more simple bread recipes for the future.
Nice & simple and they look great
I’m going to give these a go and see if I can break my spell of rubbish bread making🤣
Thank you for sharing👍🏻
My pleasure, hope yours turn out great. Thanks
I’m definitely going to have a go at making my own rolls, the cost of bread has increased beyond belief in the past year or so. You mentioned leek and potato soup, would you mind popping your recipe and method for this (and any other soups) on your playlist for the future please Dave? Thanks again for a pleasant, relaxing video. Take care. Gill X
Update…have made these and have managed to silence my husband who’s always laughed at my lack of ability to bake good bread! Thanks Dave 😉. One question…I love crusty cob rolls, what would you recommend to get the crusty crust please?
Thanks a lot Gill and yes I will be making videos of a number of simple soups, leek and potato, vegetable, french onion etc. Coming soon.
Looks really good & straight forward to make, buns are a gr8t idea, often make bread in my machine but will have a go at the kneading you make it look easy! Thank you 👏🌟🍞🥖🥯😋😋🌸
I find kneading by hand to be quite therapeutic. Hope you give it a go.
Great one mate, if I were to make a dozen would I double the yeast as well as everything else?
Love your scales Dave.
Yes for more just multiply the ingredients, them scales must be about 25 years old and still going strong. Thanks.
@@BakingOnABudget they're great Dave, my mum still uses the balance scales they are nearly 100 Years old, they belonged to my Great Granny
Thank you so much for sharing, this recipe, will definitely be trying this recipe.
I hope they turn out great, many more bread recipes to come.
I’ve made this recipe twice now (one batch of rolls and one small loaf) - so quick and easy and so much better than highly processed shop bought bread. Thank you Dave!❤
I agree....much better than shop bought bread. Thanks a lot.
I love the way you give simple easy instructions and budget friendly too :) Thanks
Thanks for watching, loads more simple and delicious recipes to come.
Electricity is very costly in Australia. I wonder how economical bread making is when you factor that in? Plus home-made bread is delicious. When my bread maker broke my son said I shouldn't bother with another as we ate the bread too fast. 😂
Even with energy costs I think it would still be less expensive than shop bought and it's so much nicer too. Thanks.
Will have a go. Long time since I last baked bread 🍞
The staff of life and great fun to make, hope you give them a go.
Thank you 🌺 so 🌹💐🌺🌹🌻 so much I bake bread 🍞🥪 to.Have an awesome day 🌹
Thanks a lot, nothing like homemade bread.
Thank you so much for this video!! I can't eat bread from the store and I've been trying to make my own bread but I have so many questions you have answered most of them. Thank you so much!!!
My pleasure, hope your bread buns turn out great.
simple and delicious 😂 today I made sweet buns with rum raisins, dangerous stuff 😅
Intoxicating buns, love the idea.
Oh, great idea. Might get some raisins soaking...
@@Shiny54plenty of rum and let them soak for a week 😅😊😊
I've never made bread other than Irish soda bread. It always scared me. You make it look easy. I will try.
Thanks, hope it turns out great.
I need to teach my cats to make bread

Making biscuits!!!
Made these tonight absolutely beautiful a very easy to make. Will make these all the time now 👍👍
That's great glad you enjoyed them.
Thank you. Another cracking recipe to try out!
I find it difficult to knead with arthritic hands, So i have a bread machine to knead and do the proving bit. It’s really helpful. However, I prefer to bake it in the oven, rather than bake in the machine.... it’s a crust and finished look preference really.
I can’t tell you how many muffins I’ve made recently - I’m getting requests 😂 Thanks again! 🕊🇬🇧
Thanks a lot, It's always great to hear that people are enjoying the recipes and baking for others is always a great thing to do. bread maker does make things easier but finish them off in the oven for great results.
@thescarlettbandit5542 I am the same I used to hand knead my own bread but now I use my breadmaker mix and prove and then I shape and put in a loaf tin. I now buy a 16kg bag of Plain Flour and bake 2 loaves a day..think I am going to have to attempt some rolls now though.
I Thankyou. I'm cooking your recipes nearly everyday. Not electrical oven. Stone cold. Oven Till l heat it up. . Its Brilliant. Thankyou. 😊
Thanks a lot and that's great to hear....glad you are enjoying them.
What determines when one needs to use lard in a recipe and when one should use oil? I know that you always tell and show us which one to use, but I wanted to know if any rules of thumbs exist when choosing between using lard and/or oil. Thank you in advance.
I think the truth is either would do, but I have found that each give a slightly different texture to the pastry. with more lard the pastry is "shorter" and lighter and more crumbly, with half butter it turns out a little more firm. and the only recipe I've tried with the oil was the samosas. It comes down to a little experimentation. But the main rule of thumb is half the amount of fat to flour. I am learning all the time myself. Hope that helps.
@@BakingOnABudget Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question with thoughtfulness and detail. I appreciate it very much.
I use butter or dripping, not a fan of the over processed seed oils, even the better oils can become rancid fairly quickly.
@@MsChicoro No problem
Ooo! Leek and potato soup, that sounds delicious! Is there a budget recipe for that as well please? 😊
Thanks, leek and potato soup coming soon.
Thank you Dave
My pleasure.
Ah! The video I didn’t know I needed! Fantastic-as always. Great stuff! Lovey your videos!❤🎉
Thanks a lot, hope you give them a go, takes a while with the double proving, but well worth it.

Thanks, they were great. I make them often.
Help!
I don’t know what I did wrong, I followed your video/recipe exactly BUT my buns came out small, hard on the outside and didn’t look right in the inside. They also felt quite heavy.
What did I do wrong?
P.s. love your content by the way. 💞
It could be a few things....but usually if the kneading and proving is right it should work out....I would also check that the yeast id not out of date. Thanks.
I suppose I could split the flour mix and make half wholemeal flour, giving me brown bread Buns Dave?
Yes you could go 50/50, I'll look into brown buns for the future. Thanks.
I absolutely love watching your videos. I love your recipes. I live in Rhode Island, USA. My late partner's parents were Brits and you remind me of him in such a sweet way. You're a wonderful teacher and I completely appreciate your style. Thank you so much for doing these. I hope you also share your Potato Leek Soup recipe too! That's great Sarah, hope you enjoyed them.
And a knob of blue cheese on the leek and potato soup. Lovely
Heaven on earth. Thanks
Ive never made rolls but im going to have a go at these. I like to make homemade hamburgers but the ones in the shop are full of nasties. Will these freeze ok as well?
Thank you for sharing. I just recommended your channel to my aunt as im sure she would enjoy it.☺️
I have beef burger and chicken burger recipe to come. You could freeze the rolls but best fresh in my opinion. Thanks
Another five mins would have made them A LOT BETTER !
yes you could leave them in longer and they would brown a little more, but I like them quite soft on top. Thanks.
I have started making my own bread & rolls, so much nicer & healthier than shop bought, much easier to digest 😊 Thanks Dave
Yes they are beautiful buns. Thanks.

You've got me wanting to make bread now.....😊haven't made some in a while...
Thanks, do give it a go it's definitely worth it.
Thank you so much for this recipe. I tried it and they are delicious! And it's so easy 😊 May I ask: if I were to make a single loaf with twice the quantity of ingredients, how long do you think I would have to bake it? Would I have to keep the same temperature in the oven, too? Thank you very much for your answer, have an excellent day.
Hi for a loaf try the oven at the same temp 180c and give it about 20 mins....but just keep an eye on it while it's baking. Thanks.
Thank you very much for your answer! I will try with the 20 minutes and I will tell you how it went in case it's useful for anyone. Have a marvelous week! Cheers!

I don't even have an oven but I love these videos so much
Thanks a lot.
Love your channel. Enjoy it greatly.
Thanks a lot, that's great to hear.
Sorry Dave but I have a question about these bread rolls. Can I make the dough at night and leave to prove overnight? I’m just wondering to get in advance. Cheers and thanks ☺️
I'm not sure, I've never tried it. My first thoughts would be that it may just keep on expanding (and fill the kitchen by the morning lol) it might be an idea to put it in the fridge that might slow the yeast down a little.
Fill the kitchen……😂😂😂😂😂 thanks Dave, it was just a thought.
@sarahbruce2655
I overnight bread dough regularly. Simply grease a bowl at least twice the size of the dough, and a piece of plastic wrap or bowl cover. Put dough in fridge immediately after first kneading. It will rise slowly. You can form it into a loaf and leave to rise next day. Hope this helps.
Thank you for another great recipe 🙂🙂
My pleasure, hope you give them a try.
Nice ... Grandfather ☺❤
Thanks a lot....hope you give them a try.
Where did you prove it please ?
I put mine in the oven seat at the lowest temp about 25c. but this should not be attempted with a gas oven because of the naked flame and cloth over the bowl which could ignite. But in the electric oven it works out okay
Airing cupboard if you have one is perfect.
Or even in a room with sun coming in the window, make sure there's no breeze, makes room smell divine.
I use a hot water bottle to stand the bowl on, it works a treat.
converted me ! thanks
Thanks a lot, hope you enjoy them.
That's amazing, thank you
