I've always liked that Joyce wasn't clued in on Willow+Tara in the last ep; but in this ep, something about Dawn's presence has made her more aware.

I think these days people just don't think of that as a negative thing in any way, shape or form, y'know? It's understandable that Joyce reacted that way about it back then, but these days we don't instantly think "oh, yeah, stay away from the lesbians, they do lesbian things" or anything like that.
Oh course I'm sure Joyce wasn't "stay away from the lesbians" but as for it not being so mainstream acceptable back then it was not wanting her daughter to be into that "lifestyle". Though thinking your preteen daughter is talking about any kind of sex (which "the things they do" means actual doing things and not just being lesbian) is kinda disturbing.
But it always makes me wonder when Joyce found out about Willow and Tara being lesbians. Because she was clueless on it last episode when explaining to them about inviting Dracula in.

Seriously, if you don't have mods moderating your comments sections, get some now. Buffy fans are amongst the best out there, but season 5 is just too tempting for many and spoilers will spill. It's happened for every reactor. You need really strict mods to keep it from happening.
The best way I've seen moderating being done is to have mods go through the comments before you and they make a safe list of safe comments you can read. It's a much better approach than having mods telling people to remove spoilers. Unfortunately, season 5 evokes a lot of passion and it can spill out when someone is told something is a spoiler when they don't think it is. The safe list just means you ignore comments and nobody gets called out. They just never know you didn't read their comment.
Even late season 4 gets bad for spoilers.
Another thing is, if you end up doing the safe list approach, you can announce it to the fans, so the fans won't feel the need to call out spoilers either. There have been flame battles in the past over fans trying to get someone to remove spoilers too. Honestly, it makes the experience a whole lot easier for the mods, the reactor, and the fans. Cuts down on a lot of conflict. It's kind of just something that inevitably happens when you get to a season like this one. It's just that good.

The Buffy fandom is overall really great and will give you paragraphs of explanations if you have questions, but sometimes spoilers just slip out.
Passions was a soap opera it had a witchcraft element in it I only watched one or two episodes myself.

Timmy's down the bloody well, and if you make me miss it..." GILES: "You'll what? Lick me to death?" Timmy is probably the most famous character from Passions (which I personally never watched). He's a doll that was magically brought to life, portrayed by an actor with dwarfism. Spike is apparently a big fan of the show.

James Reilly created it. He was previously the head writer on Days of our Lives and took DOOL into some supernatural territory which grew ratings but was controversial with long time viewers. He then took it to an extreme with Passions which lasted for 9 years.

Just kidding. It was a fun show. Timmy was also a little boy. It was basically a soap made specifically for teens, and one character was a witch. You should be able to see some clips at YT.
It's so nice to see someone's first reaction to Dawn not be total annoyance. I was like 11 when this episode came out and I related to her and Tara so much. I can't help but have a soft spot for the characters who feel like outsiders in close knit friend groups.
i don't think most reactors are annoyed by dawn's appearance. i know that was the "popular" reaction back when the show aired, and the fanbase wasn't always sensitive and understanding, but i like to think it's better today.
This is one of the most iconic episodes for me. Man, I just love Harmony and the editing and comedy in this episode are just all around on point!

Some people just think they're being oh so clever with their wording. Doesn't work when 20 people are being clever with the exact same phrasing. I so wish we were over this by now. Every reactor has talked about it. It's so very frustrating.

As a younger sibling, i understand Dawn is perceived as the most annoying character but i also feel her
I think people dont like her because she was supposed to be 10 years old and her mistakes and the things she says would not be annoying but when they hired Michelle, and aged her up... the stuff a 10 year old does cant be easily excused when they are 14.

Yeah, having a younger sister about 7 years younger than myself, I could very much relate with Buffy when she shows up. But as I get older she doesn't annoy me so much anymore.
I think she absolutely nailed the role of the annoying younger sibling. The character is supposed to be the stereotypical teen who, intentionally and unintentionally, gets on every gosh darn nerve her older sister has and then some more. That's just how most sibling relationships work, especially when one's a teen - the absolute love-hate that only siblings achieve.
Weird how Thor read more into that one comment then things in the actual episode. Lol. Can't wait for everything to unfold.
Honestly, Thor, don't read into those comments too deeply or let them inform your predictions. While there are of course actual spoilers, there are also "spoilers" from people misinterpreting, misremembering or simply phrasing things strangely so that you think the information is more meaningful than it is. Bear in mind that anything you're told could be true, half-true or wildly off-base, and it's not worth listening in any case. Just clear the comments from your head, enjoy the show, keep an open mind and make your guesses based solely on the information the show gives you. And yeah, get a mod as others have advised because some people have absolutely no filter.
Dawn is written to be a 12 year old girl. Michelle Trachtenberg got the role despite her age/height because of her amazing chemistry with Sarah Michelle Gellar. SMG also advocated for her heavily as they used to work on All My Children together.
Dawn was 14 at the time of this episode, not 12. Big difference.
She was aged up to 14, but that was a retcon after they cast Michelle Trachtenberg. They wrote the character as a 12 year old and some of that characterization stuck around

I love that you kept in Anya wanting to trade in the children for money!! It's my absolute favourite moment from the episode! She's hilarious. This is a really fun episode, from Giles and his car, to harmony, her note, her minions!
Plus, there's the kind of scene recreation with dawn that's like when buffy was chained up by the frat guys, in season two, to be fed to the reptile monster. Not enough people comment on that. Lol. I liked reptile boy too much, it's not a fan favourite so understandable why people might not pick up on that.
I really hope you don't get spoiled. I've only watched you and one other person react to buffy and neither of you have been spoiled (aside from whatever you've heard about dawn,) and it's been really fun to watch y'all authenticly react.
Lol Thor missed the dirty joke with Willow and Tara, when Dawn told Joyce she wanted them to teach her the things they do alone together and Joyce got really quiet 😂

It really annoys the crap out of me when I see people thinking they’re being clever by “subtly” alluding to future events/characters or straight up telling you to remember something because it’ll come up later. Smh. I don’t understand what they think you’re gaining from that. Talk about the current episode or past episodes, or don’t say anything at all. It’s that simple.
Unfortunately, Thor, Season 5 is known to be the spoilers season. So, maybe don't read comments going forward or figure out some moderators for your comments section.
Just remember people even mentioning a characters name can be a spoiler! Watch yourselves moving forward!
Understood. But if you look at previous comments, most of them were about what was said as far as the dawn is coming. People were reiterating what was said as foreshadowing, more than talking about the character herself🤷♀️ when he met the character, he made his own leaps regarding her

I remember I was one year older than Dawn when season five first aired. And I didn't like her at all. I was a teenager too, but I guess seeing Buffy be only 16 in season one, sacrificing herself and save the world... made me have higher expectations than what Dawn did in that second episode. I mean, leaving the house after a vampire just attacked, isn't smart already, but fighting Anya when she tries to bring her back inside saying it's not safe that's even worst. My first impression of Dawn was not a good one, even as a teen myself XD.
I guess that's because Dawn ended up being older than what was planned, and I didn't like how childish she was, being 14. I mean, I was 15 and babysitting. There, she needs a babysitter. Not only because Buffy and Joyce said so. But because even with babysitters, she does something stupid twice and is acting like a kid and not a teenager. I guess, the age difference made it impossible for me to find excuses for her behavior.

Hi Thor, I think maybe you are remembering comments about Dawn after Restless. Because Tara said to Buffy “be back before dawn” in Buffy’s dream. That was a reference to Dawn’s appearance this season. But don’t stress or try to read too much into it.
That said, there are a lot of spoilers for this season, so as others have said, it would be a good idea to get the moderator.
This season is one of my favs! Dawn is underrated and her actress is so good.

Here's the thing- Season 1 to 4 made Buffy awesome television. Season 5 forward turned Buffy into EPIC television. Just buckle up and enjoy the ride.

The really bad thing about people spoiling about Dawn is that it's so unnecessary. From stuff said on the show towards the end of season 4, and stuff said in episode 1, you already have all the info you need to see the truth about Dawn.
Nobody ever really does - I certainly didn't at the time - but if you go back and rewatch, it's all there. And only in a couple of line, really.

What I will say about Dawn and commenters is that Dawn is so much fun to use to mess with people. Because of how/when she came in, it’s hard to figure out what her deal is as a first time watcher of the show. Because of this, Dawn ends up being a way to mess with reactors/first time watchers for almost all of season 5. Moral of the story: don’t pay attention to any comments about Dawn for the foreseeable future because people are probably just having fun messing with someone who doesn’t know the whole story.

I don't know why the Buffy fandom can't control themselves with this season. Avoid the comments this season or get someone to screen things first. People don't even think they're spoiling things, they're forgetting what the first time through is like, thinking it's just harmless jokes. They don't think about what has actually happened on screen so far. You're not through it yet and there are going to be a few more things this season people will misbehave on thinking they're being funny. S6 and 7 are more or less safe again, but 5 is arguably the best season of Buffy and people can't help themselves. People have said WAY too much and I hope you haven't caught much of it!

The reason I think Dawn has a crush on Xander is remember in season two when he saved Dawn from Angelus
I like this episode for what it is. My only real gripe is that we saw this exact storyline handled way better when the crazy vampire with sister issues kidnapped Dawn in Helpless. IMO it should have been Joyce who was kidnapped in this episode - at least that would have provided some variety.

i love tara so much. willow has the best two partners in the series. also im glad giles found a purpose. this was a good move, giving them a post library place to gather. season 4 lacked a central location and i think that was a weakness.
dawn is the wesley crusher (shut up wesley) or the buffy universe. the diffference isthat i kinda liked wesley. i dont think buffy was too harsh on dawn. she should know better and she does put everyone in danger. and she does get in the way of her training. its not buffys job to take care of a child. she didnt have a child. she has a full time job she getsno choice in and school. she has enough to dowithout having a teenager be her responsibility. also so so funny that thor didnt get the thingabout willow and tara.

Passions was an unintentionally funny, weird soap opera in the 90's. Most soap operas have the usual relationship drama, but Passions added things like witches, talking dolls, zombies, etc.
I was so happy that Giles found this new job as owner of the magic shop - it's a fun new place for the gang to hang out, and gives him something to do instead of watching soap operas with Spike. 😉 (Though I think it would be hilarious to see that scene between Giles and Spike.)
They should get together and do a reaction to Passions!

"So uncivilized" would be from "Revenge of the Sith" which came out later. The Prequels were not exactly original in their writing.
Season 5 is all about growing up, and how harsh that can be. Its why it's the best season of Buffy.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Real Me’. May contain spoilers.
With this episode we have the introduction of a brand new main character... only we’re not supposed to think of her as brand new. We are given no explanation as to why Dawn Summers has never been mentioned before the start of this season until later in it. Therefore, it’s odd to us how all the other characters act as if she’s always been there with them. Part of their lives as Buffy’s little sister.
That being said - it means we have to acknowledge that all the other characters have had different experiences and situations happen to them than what we have seen and remember with the inclusion of Dawn to the show. Especially with Tara - who Dawn has seemed to have established a personal connection with more than anyone else. And it appears that the reason why is that they’re both outsiders to the tight-knit team of the Scooby Gang family. They feel excluded.
When Dawn is told to wait outside the Magic Box store while the Gang deal with the murder of the owner, Tara eventually goes looking for Dawn, knowing that she has no real business helping the other characters with their detective work. They bond and share in their discomfort at being “in the way” as “non-Scoobies”.
Later, as Willow and Tara are unpacking belongings in an apartment - now taking the step of moving into an off-campus living environment together, Tara relays her concerns about Dawn feeling left out - to which Willow intuitively senses that it’s not just Dawn that feels that way. Tara does too. And she refuses to let the conversation drop when Tara tries to change the subject. As I mentioned in my recap for ‘Hush’ - this is one of the ways in which Willow and Tara bond emotionally. In being outcasted or rejected from society. In their individual feelings of being ostracized or invalidated in particular. And here’s the thing - every protagonist character does to some degree at different points in the show. In this season, it appears to be Tara and Dawn that does as they are the “newbies” to the group dynamic and haven’t really found their feet in how they can be useful or beneficial to the team-working machine yet. As the season progresses, we learn much more about these characters and we see the romantic relationship between Tara and Willow really blossom because of it.
I’ve seen every single reactor get spoiled for something big on Buffy or Angel, and if it’s not idiots who think they’re smarter than they actually are, it’s very often on purpose. If you don’t at least have a friend to read comments, I’d suggest you just stop reading them entirely. It’s one thing on patreon, where you might feel like you have to in order to give people their money’s worth, but it’s just not worth it on RUclips. 95% of the Buffy fandom is great, but that last 5% is full douchebag.

Just remember the word misdirection.

I’m assuming the comments you talked about are the ones that said “be back before dawn”. Which wasn’t really a spoiler, it was just repeating what Tara said in the season 4 finale. So the show dropped that hint themselves. Now if people added any additional info to that, then there’s a problem. But like so many people have said, this is by far my favorite season and I can’t wait for you to experience it
