For a while there it seemed way too convenient for me that Anya's ex would appear out of thin air...but then it was explained by Passion of the Nerd (an *excellent* Buffy analysis channel) that he was actually brought forth, specifically, as a result of Willow's spell. If you go back, she says that anything that's said once she starts can disrupt it....and then she and Anya start bickering over what's "really got Anya mad." Basically, Willow summoned Anya's direct insecurity: the root of her lack of trust in relationships.

I really love the Tara and Buffy scenes. They don't have enough of them in the show, but when they do, they are so good. This isn't one of my favorite episodes, just because of the bickering, and the lack of reality that Xander is even alive at the end of getting hit in the head like that, and I don't like Halfreck even though I love the actress, but I do like the bit with Dawn at the end. Um, she's had _two_, three if you count Parker. And she's 19 years old. She's had two boyfriends and one hook up (who had made her think that she's found a new boyfriend.)
Shall we look at your track record, Xander? Bug lady. Cordelia. Cheated on Cordelia with Willow. Faith. And finally Anya.
Who's relationship debris is piling up, exactly?
And, frankly, Spike deserves credit for not feeding on bleeding disaster victims. The proper point of reference isn't some hypothetical "good guy" but rather what he was back in School Hard. ("You're too old to eat...but not to kill.") He's actually come a long way.

@ianburns1167 compare that, however, with Angelus, who did things like make Drusila into the insane vampire he was.
Even as a soulless monster, before the chip was installed, he still never sunk to the depths Angelus did.
And, once got involved with the Scoobies, he actually tried to be better, even beyond what the chip required.
Spike, IMO, absolutely has the best character arc in the show.

    • @amandabaker4678
      @amandabaker4678 10 месяцев назад +2

@@ianburns1167We know that Drusilla likes to eat kids, I don't know that it's ever stated that it's Spikes preference?
Also, I don't think he's really that into torture - if he was, he wouldn't have hired someone else to torture Angel when he went to try to get back the Gem of Amara.
Him saying he was going to torture Drusilla to get her back was more about doing something that she would appreciate - there are a couple of times in both shows where it indicates that she is into torture. Unfortunately, that probably stems from what Angel did to her when he turned her.

    • @ernesthakey3396
      @ernesthakey3396 5 месяцев назад

4 if you count Owen - admitted it was like one sort-of-date, but she was interested until he turned adrenalin junkie on her.
5 if you also count Scott - there were definitely relationship-type things going on even if that never fully got off the ground. I mean, it had to be a relationship of some kind if they were going to go to prom...before he broke it off.
I think both of those count at least as much as praying mantis woman...and for Xander, Faith was a one night stand that wasn't even a whole night.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Triangle’. May contain spoilers.
‘Triangle’ would be a throw-away dramedy episode if not for what it highlights about the conflict between Willow and Anya. They’ve had very few scenes together thus far and it’s partially because they don’t like each other at all. They don’t hang out unless it’s a Scooby-related event. They seem to always be at odds with each other every time they interact. This is the one and only episode that gives them enough screen-time together to really address why they dislike each other so much. As I pointed out in the previous episode recap for ‘Into The Woods’, it doesn’t have anything to do with Xander why they’re always butting heads, although it does seem that way given many of their fights involve Xander in some way, shape or form. That’s partly down to Anya thinking and worrying that Willow will steal him away from her even though she knows she doesn’t swing that way anymore - to which Willow is quick to mention every time another character comments that she is just in an “experimental college phase” that therefore means that she isn’t serious about her sexuality and in her romantic/sexual relationship with Tara. It’s important for Willow and for the audience watching, that have Willow as their self-insert character, that her identified and declared sexuality is validated as often as possible. That Willow has no interest in changing her sexual orientation, and this subject will even be acknowledged and addressed with her own girlfriend later in the season.
The reason why Willow and Anya are in constant confliction with each other is due to something else. Something much more important than petty jealousy. That of not having any respect for each other as people. In fact, Willow still thinks of Anya as a vengeance demon even though she knows she’s not. And it doesn’t help Willow’s somewhat skewed perception of Anya any that Anya doesn’t understand being human even though she is a human being. This is showcased pretty much every time she opens her mouth to speak because she always speaks her mind. Coincidently, this is actually something Willow has always had trouble with due to not wanting to appear unlikeable to people or be perceived herself as the way she perceives Anya. Unrelentingly irritating. So the fact Anya always speaks her mind, and her thoughts are almost always about how stupid or useless the human being is, really pisses Willow the fuck off. And it makes the conflict between them much worse that Anya ain’t apologizing for thinking of Willow as the Exhibit A of that stupid and useless human-beingness.
It’s ironic to me that Anya mentions D’Hoffryn offering Willow her old job as a vengeance demon in this scene because when Willow does go all vengeance demon-y in her arc as Dark Willow at the climax of Season 6... that’s actually when Willow finally understands Anya’s emotionally stunted behaviour and bizarre inhumane personality, and therefore can have compassion for her. At the same time, that’s when Anya finally understands human-ness, and therefore can have compassion for the human race, even though she herself isn’t a human anymore, as D’Hoffryn rehires her after Xander leaves her at the altar in 'Hell's Bells' in Season 6.
Take their conversation in ‘Same Time, Same Place’ in Season 7 for example:
WILLOW: “Anya, you're a vengeance demon. Just teleport!”
ANYA: “Well, as it turns out, teleporting isn't a right, it's a privilege. I withdrew a vengeance spell last week, and this is my punishment. I can only teleport for official business. I have to file a flight plan and everything.”
WILLOW: “Oh. I'm sorry. That must be hard.”
ANYA: “Yeah, it bites a pretty big one. And the vengeance itself, i-it's not as fulfilling as I remember.”
WILLOW: “Really? 'Cause I got the impression that you enjoyed - you know, inflicting.”
ANYA: “Well, causing pain sounds really cool, I know, but turns out... it's really upsetting. Didn't use to be, but now it is.”
WILLOW: “Is it like you're scared of losing that feeling again, and that having it be okay to hurt people, and then you're not in charge of the power anymore because it's in charge of you?”
ANYA: “Wow, that was really over-dramatically stated, but, yeah, that's it.”
WILLOW: “I get it. Believe me.”
ANYA: “I'm sorry, Willow. I wish it were better for you.”
    WILLOW: “You too.”
What’s so ironic to me about the mentioning of that besides what I’ve just written is that Anya is very right about Willow. She is much closer to being a vengeance demon than she is at this point in the show and that’s why I do believe Dark Willow to be a vengeance demon. Just one not under D’Hoffryn’s control as she becomes far too powerful and full of rage for any Vengeance Demon Lord to recruit. Willow becomes one all on her very own-some because it’s in her nature.
See the conversation between D’Hoffryn and Willow in ‘Selfless’ in Season 7:
D’Hoffryn: “Miss Rosenberg. How lovely to see you again. Have you done something with your hair?”
    WILLOW: “Hello, D'Hoffryn.”
D'HOFFRYN: “I figured I'd be hearing from you soon. The flaying of Warren Mears? Oh, truly inspired. That was water cooler vengeance. Lloyd has a sketch of it on his wall.”
    WILLOW: “That's not me anymore.”
D'HOFFRYN: “Is that right? So, I didn't feel your presence earlier today? I didn't feel a bit of the old you?”
In this episode, Anya and Willow are able to work together and encourage each other to defeat Anya’s ex Olaf. I don’t think they ever become friends but they do absolutely learn to respect each other as people and as Scooby members. And by god damn that’s a good start because Xander is ready to pull his hair out at having to always be the one in the middle of their conflict - the “referee”, as he puts it. I do find it quite hilarious how the show writers have Willow and Anya relying on their respective lovers to try to win points in the argument between them in an earlier scene in this episode, as they would expect their respective lover to agree with and defend them - and hilariously - neither Xander or Tara does. It’s a conflict they must work out on their own and I’d say they did just that in the end. Willow and Anya is a relationship dynamic that is so often overlooked in the fanbase... which is a damn shame because there’s a lot to talk about with them. I have merely only scratched the surface on doing so in this episode recap. I would like to see a lot more fanbase content surrounding them in future.

Fun fact: Joss Whedon wanted to make Xander the main gay character of the show, he started plating seeds back in season 2 with Larry, but Anya's chemistry with Xander made him change his plans so he decided to make Willow gay. Xander and Anya are the only couple that remains from the high school era, their relationship it's quite dear to everyone because of the way both characters have grown so far, and it's interesting to see that they still have things to work out.

In ‘Triangle’ when Anya asks “why not?” to Willow asking her “do you think I’d do that again?” (referring to making Xander cheat on her with her the way she did with Cordelia), I really wish she would have answered with “because I’m with Tara” or “because I’m not interested in Xander anymore” instead of what she does because as much as I try to excuse it with “it’s validation for the lesbian community” or “Willow has the right to identify/declare her own sexuality” it is most definitely bi-erasure at the same time.
The way she just comes out with it - as if it’s supposed to be obvious that her sexuality is homosexual just because she’s dating a woman. The way she just expects Anya to understand that she’s gay entirely based on the fact she’s not currently with a man. It is bi-erasure. I wouldn’t say bi-phobia. I doubt the writers intended for it to come across the way it does but they were a little ignorant when they wrote that piece of dialogue for her character. And while it does make sense for Alyson Hannigan to deliver that line the way she does, I wonder if she felt a little irked by it. I wonder if she thought “hmm, wait, does Willow saying this like this mean she’s erasing bisexuality?”. Did the thought ever pop up for her at all or were we really at a time when awareness on ALL sexualities/identities were so ignored that she wouldn’t have realized that Willow saying what she does the way she does could be taken as bi-erasure?
If the character hadn’t said it in such a matter-of-factly way, it probably wouldn’t be so much of an issue for me. But she doesn’t. She says it as if Anya is incredibly stupid for not realizing that it is obvious. And I’m just saying that this line did not age well. Not when choosing to analyze it in the year of 2022. And as a bisexual person myself, it does really sorta sting because it’s like “hey, I exist…”, you know? 😑

I've met very few lesbians who have no romantic or sexual experience with men, even the butchest butch I know had a long term high school boyfriend until she figured things out. I'm a lesbian and I remember at the time this aired, in our community the overall feeling was "WHEW! Thank goodness they're finally letting a lesbian BE a lesbian". It seemed like every potential same sex romance/relationship involving women was a) a ratings stunt that was forgotten in a few weeks b) total subtext (looking at you Xena) c) the character eventually settles into bisexuality so people aren't TOO upset and they can still give her a boyfriend in the future.
So while I hear a lot about bi-erasure now, in the past it has felt like bisexuality was used as a way to make gays more "acceptable" in pop culture. Spike even taunted Willow with it in The Yoko Factor, telling her her friends thought she was just being trendy.
I'm going to conclude with a question; when did having a previous relationship with a guy mean that a woman can't identify as gay?

    • @Girl4Music
      @Girl4Music 11 месяцев назад +2

@@nancytoothaker3224 It doesn’t. Willow’s identified and declared sexuality even after being with a man is important and 100% valid. It’s just the way she says it that sorta makes me feel like it’s bi-erasure. And it’s funny you say that about how bisexuality was a way to make gays more acceptable in pop culture because Joss Whedon has gone on record to say making her gay was the safer option. But I think that’s because he wanted the representation to be as genuine as possible and therefore made sure the writers had Willow show that she was uncomfortable with the thought that anyone would think she was just “experimenting in college” and have her emphatically declare that she’s gay now.
And yeah, I would also think that for most same-sex attracted people, there’d be at least some experience with the opposite sex. Especially back then. Maybe now that wouldn’t be the case because it’s fully accepted now in a Western society. But for the time the likes Buffy and Xena was airing, this was not the case at all and comphet was a massive condition regarding characters being gay. That’s why it was always in the TV of the times. Especially with Xena which I think of more as straightbaiting rather than queerbaiting and the subtext only made the writing much more honest and authentic because it pushed them to write emotional content more than sexual content which was very necessary to throw people away from the “lesbianism is porn” stereotype even when it’s as unsexual as hetero relationships. I actually really appreciated that about Xena but of course would expect more now.

Also nice that we get to see Anya a little more fleshed out, and we'll rounded too. Yes, she likes money, but she also might he a but of a rule follower too which kinda supports her neurodivigency the Fandom likes point out, and gives her a demoness some character and kinda makes me wonder about her relationship with D'yhoffrin a bit more.

So I adore Anya, she's freaking hilarious, but the actual character is the WORST person in the show by a country mile. Dude cheats on her & she turns him into a troll... NO !! DISPROPORTIONATE !!! A dude cheats on you, you kick him in the dick & leave. You do not use dark magic to turn him into a FREAKING TROLL !!! This is so petty & over the top that it literally gets her hired as a vengeance demon... She then proceeds to spend the the next 1100 years BRUTALLY murdering, torturing & cursing dudes for crimes that, while I'm 100% positive that at least half of them deserved what they got, untold THOUSANDS most likely did not. She shows no remorse & frequently makes a joke of her murders, she even openly admits that she misses slaughtering people.

To be fair, people also love Spike. Who only had 200 years at it but was as or more malicious.

@@ianburns1167 It's massively unclear whether or not Anya had a soul when she committed her adorable atrocities. She certainly had one when she agreed to become a vengeance demon & she seems to have one now but it's not really clear if she gave it up then got it back, or if she had it the whole time & she just dgaf.

Agree! I think Emma is amazing but yeah, it's prob why I don't get upset with later events regarding her character.

I think this is the episode I started to dislike Willow. Admittedly she’d already cursed all her friends in Something blue, and cared more about dead Indians than her friends in Pangs…actually I’ve disliked her since then. Ok, this is when I REALLY started to dislike Willow.

Nick, you should react to the MOVIE 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' (1992). I think it is better than the TV show.
