@MultiTwiglet I agree that black women has worn their hair natural long before. Just like the baby hairs, and plump glossy lips, super long nails, and high waisted pants has ALWAYS been around. A trend is the current choice of fashion, beauty etc that the majority is wearing. When natural hair became the ideal hairstyle people was putting people down for relaxers.

My mom use to relax my hair as a child and she ALWAYS relaxed the ends. I grew up throughout my childhood with short hair and I used to envy all the girls with long hair. When I became an adult i took over my haircare and went natural and its been longest that its ever been. I dont blame my mom for relaxing my hair I just wished she was more knowledgeable with it.

Before then, I was getting all my relaxers from root to tip! I actually talked about it in this video, but took it out when editing because I thought I was rambling and didnt know if anyone would be able to relate! I don't blame her either though, the more you know.

@@SeunOkimi Hi Seun, if you don't mind, could you please do a video on your regimen while wearing a weave? I've watched a lot of your videos but I still have so many practical questions, like how long do you keep the weave in at a time? And how often do you wash/cleanse your hair once the weave is in? And how do you go about that proces? Do you condition/deep condition your hair with the weave in, and if yes: how? How do you moisturize your hair with the weave in? Do you do any special treatments between weave installs? It would be super helpful if you could offer some more insight into your regimen. I want to wear weaves as a protective style, but I want to do it the proper way. And being that your hair looks the way it looks, you seem like the one to ask 🤷🏿😊👍🏾

Yes but genetics play a huge role in growing relaxed hair more than natural hair it's a fact. I'm from Africa and I know this very well. Just because you see someone who has achieved this doesn't mean yours will he the same and if the case is that you want relaxed hair it's best to grow it out natural first.

@Oreofe Akintan if you keep up with her videos, you'll know she used to say exactly what you just said. I'm Nigerian (and so is she). I know that genetics play a good role in this, but you can actually take care of your hair to ensure it grows. Not everything is restricted by genetics. Seun had the same thoughts until she started being more intentional about taking care of her hair.

It's mostly about keeping the length that matter, so to retain length, you have to take care of the ends and your hair overall so they dont break, even they break your hair will still grown but you wont have length.

Back in March I returned to relaxing my hair, after trying to care for it in its natural state. Afterward it was easier to care for it. I still do hot oil treatments and deep conditionings. I care for my relaxed hair as if it was natural. Friday I retouched my roots only, and I couldnt believe the growth, 3 inches in about 7 months. Not too shabby. If youre relaxed, still keep moisturizing, keep protective styling, try not to touch daily, still use a wide tooth comb when blow drying or styling, and still oil your fingertips before taking down braids. It will help prevent breakage. Lastly, I use ORS products as well. The same ones she posted. Theyve worked for years. Love em!

Great video. Tips from someone who actually has a head full of healthy permed hair is helpful.
After being natural for a year I permed June 2019.
It's growing better permed. I agree that low manipulation is key.
I wash, deep condition once a week, grease my scalp, moisturize my hair, then I slap it down with some gel and wear wigs.
Its grown more in 7 months of being permed than in 1 year of being natural.
I also perm every 6 months.

I actually agree. I went natural like 10 years ago and had major breakage after an improper takedown and lost a lot of length about two years ago. I feel like my hair grew more when relaxed because the texture is easier to manage but i was heat styling so it didn’t grow as long as it could. But protective styling while relaxed is probably best.

Definitely. Relaxing every six months is the best thing if someone wants to relax. Ppl keep looking down on relaxers w this whole 'natural" craze but relaxers keep hair more manageable. And staying away from box (no lye relaxers) is also key. I like the lye Motions in the little tub or Silk Elements.

People tell me I am crazy saying that my hair grows better relaxed. It does cause I don’t have to do much to it. I wash it and wrap it wet, go to sleep, and in the morning I barely have flat iron it. Then just keep it wrapped at night until I wash it again. No wash and goes, no twist unless I want that look, just let it hang.

Yes, leave your hair alone. Stop doing so much. I wear pretty head wraps. It looks like Buck Wheat underneath, lol, but, my hair is bra strap length. I only relax my hair twice a year. I use rice water as well.
It actually stops the shedding. My conditioner stops it as well. Find a conditioner that controls shedding.
Another reason is the calcification on the scalp. Relaxers leave calcium on the scalp which causes hair breakage and will stunt hair growth. Magnesium oil removes calcification from the scalp.

Great video Seun! The tip on leaving your hair alone is the most important!! I have over 24 inches of hair growth, I made a youtube video on how I did this, and I've been growing out my hair for a little over 4 years now (I started from scratch :))! People do tooo much to their hair! P.S I thought I was subscribed to your channel the entire time, as of 10 minutes ago, I am a New Subscriber! This was the video I was looking for 10 years ago. I had a relaxer at the time and I was looking for ways to manage both textures during my stretch. It took about two months to make the decision to transition to natural. There wasn't education tutorials about how to effectively maintain relaxed hair especially to prevent breakage. I think because I've learned so much about the process of maintaining health and strength of the hair and scalp, I can take care of my hair in its natural or chemical state. Great video!

    Hi Beauty!
Im a natural, but i LOVE perm'd hair. I do feel myself going back to perm, but im enjoying being a lazy natural right now. lol
Anyway, here are some tips that can help everyone (in my opinion of course lol)
    1. Wash once a week , but dilute your shampoo ( get an applicator bottle and mix, 1 oz of shampoo, 1 oz conditioner, 1 oz oil and the rest should be water) -- then of course condition and deep condish w/ oil
    2. AFTER you rinse EVERYTHING OUT WITH warm water, grease, yes grease or use whipped shea butter as an alternative on your WET scalp. Your hair will NOT be greasy, i promise. Grease makes your hair greasy when you apply it on dry scalp/hair, but when applied WET, its so moisturizing.
    Hope these two tips help.
Feel free to follow me on my RUclips channel if you ever need a laugh @FLC.TV

Good hair care practices are good hair care practices across the board. A lot of what you're saying applies to 'natural hair' length retention as well. We need to take proper care of our hair no matter the state, stage or choice of style; only then can we see it flourish.
    Great advice. Keep it up!

I only did my hair at salons for 10 years, my mom didn’t know how to do my hair so neither did I, and it turns out I was doing most of these things, I went natural years ago, but - no heat- 1 year ago and tbh maybe if I knew these tips beforehand I would have had healthier hair when I had relaxer in my hair. I simply thought my hair didn’t grow because of the relaxers and heat. I think what’s different is simply knowing YOUR hair, everyone’s hair is different and handles things differently. I’m still working on length retention but my hair definitely looks and feels healthier being natural than relaxed but I’m thankful for the video! Sending you much love and hope you stay healthy and happy and safe.

Love your hair. I honestly use all ORS products from their shampoo, conditioner, hair mayo, oil sheen and even relaxer. And I agree, its more of what you are doing to the hair then the products. Products can help moisturiser and strengthen the hair; even with moisturising you have to be consistent with it, same with deep conditioning. Well, that's what I have learnt in my relaxer hair journey.

This video just popped up in my feed and I appreciate the information. My stylists over processed my hair a few weeks ago and it completely broke off in the back. This wasn't the first time, but absolutely the worst breakage I've had in a very long time. After the shock and crying; I decided to, once again, take over relaxing my own hair. I'd prefer to pay someone to do it, but I can't keep dealing with my hair growing and someone else causing it to break.

My relaxed hair grew. My problem is it’s genetically thin 😩. Anyway one thing about relaxers people don’t know if you have hair like mine 4zyx lol sometimes our cuticles on the hair shaft are so tightly closed it’s hard to get moisture in the hair. Witch caused dry hair and breakage. ( why they say we need to use heat when we condition so the heat can open our hair cuticles to get the moisture in. Hint cold water closed it) Now what a relaxer does is burst open the same cuticles. Now when those cuticles are open now it’s easier for the hair to get moisture into it. This is why some people hair seems heather or to grow better when relaxed. Moisture is what we need but hard to get when your hair isn’t allowing anything in and all the products just sit on top of the hair (hair Perocity) now when it’s burst open too much is when you can’t keep the moisture in. But for a lot of people with really tight cuticles relaxers just open it enought to get the mosture in. If your hair can already take moisture and you burst the cuticles open with relaxer you will have all type of issues and hair will start to dry and break off

I was literally just binging your videos today, What a coinkydink! Question for you, when do you moisturize your hair? When you have your hair out do you mosisturize it daily and before you put it back in a protective style do you put anything on it?
Also, I love your videos so much and I've been using your tips and I've seen great hair growth You should honestly be one of the top channels for black hair. You are a direct contradiction to natural hair nazis that spread propaganda that it is impossible to have nice relaxed hair and all relaxed hair is brittle, short, and dry. Your hair is sooo amazing . Not just the length but it looks so full and healthy

Yes, I always always make sure I moisturize before braiding my hair up for a protective style. And when I have my hair out, it kind of varies. If I moisturize daily I just make sure to apply it very very lighly so that my hair doesn't get to weighed down before its time to wash!

I under process my hair on purpose because then it’s kind of still curly and I can still have the benefits of natural hair but not too straight to have the relaxed hair breakage issues. When it’s time to relax my new growth I use heavy oils, grease, or Vaseline to cover the patch of hair right before the new growth starts. It’s a guide, and if I accidentally get some on that part, it is super easy just to remove or wipe away. This adds an extra step to the relaxing process and can be quite tedious but it’s honestly worth it

I've actually had people who I see regularly friends, co-workers , family to BADGER me about "why don't you have her hair down more often" and even a pruned up old elder say " I BET SHE DONT HAVE ALL THAT HAIR NOW " ( because it was in an afro puff. I grabbed a 17" strand and stretched it and asked her, " HOW MUCH YOU WANNA BET ? " 😂😂😂😂
