Not going to pretend to understand Maynard’s motives, but their modern shows are really more about creating a soundscape and excellent visuals. Maynard blends in as much as anyone does. Plus it’s a rare treat to get so much talent all at once. It’s awesome that they all give each other space to shine.

Ah, Schism... my first Tool love! Anyway, good call on not focusing on the video because this one is even weirder than most of Tool's other weird videos.
To answer your question, I'd probably have to go with Pneuma and Descending. Those are two of the greatest songs I've heard from ANY group. They're just majestic!

05:39 I may be waaaay off base here, but here's an observation. Jazz and Blues are said to have brought in complex polyrhythms, which flowed naturally into rock as it sprang from blues. in the 1980s hip-hop artists sampled much simpler funk and soul tracks, while rock continued to build on those polyrhythms. The end result is that fans of dance, hip-hop, and R&B lost that love of complex beats and are almost exclusively attuned to a 4/4, 3/4, etc. I'm not a musician, can somebody help me out here?

Schism is one of a couple of Tool songs that are forever linked in my brain with a psychedelic experience.

Parabol/parabola is my favorite song of theirs. I did a tool binge while on 7g of shrooms and that song was far and above the most profound.

Maynard choses to be out of the limelight. Eye contact from the crowd was not something he cares for. Giving the band their due recognition. His voice is another instrument incorporated into the music. In his other 2 bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer he does play the front man very well. He just choses to perform Tool this way. A mystery man who adds to the mystery that has sourounded the music since 92"and it works.
I like the lyric reading you did at the end. It was cool. To hear the lyrics in another style but the message hits as hard...then you know that song is tapped into another level

Word on the sheet was that he had eye issues and had to stand back out of the bright show lights. Then I assume it became a Tool thing. More about the culmination of all of them equally instead of the cleshe' front man style band. I miss him up front but totally get it.
I saw tool in concert last year. No phones or cameras are allowed at their shows because the lead singer Maynard has epilepsy. That is also why he sings in the background. We were allowed to have our phone out for the last 2 songs. Security wasn't playing either. I saw multiple people kicked out in the first 20 minutes

It's probably been answered already, but Maynard has said that he's in the back so he can hear his audio a lot better when on stage, he's said that being up in the front was almost deafening at this point, so to not have any major issues go down, he elects to get better sound quality while also being where he can be in a position to do something in case anything goes bad (yeah, that last part was more of my understanding of a paraphrase).

Much respect for focusing on the music and not getting too distracted by the video. There's definitely a major visual aspect to Tool; and I'm a fan of Adam's artistic contributions, but the instrumentation (vocally too) is the centerpiece in my opinion.
I'm not a musician but I've never had a problem catching their beat. It changes up a lot but it's an automatic switch. I think you just have to relax and don't think about it. Some songs are definitely harder than others. Btw, I don't mind the pausing. It's a REACTION video. I know these songs back and forth. I can listen to them as much as I want.

He doesnt like being on the front of the stage he's expresing that all the band members are the front man its about all of them and when a singer is front and center people only pay attention to them not the whole of the band
He also suffers from stage anxiety and is deeply uncomfortable being the focus of attention when they perform. Plus no people throwing bottles or rushing the stage where he has to sing the last 5 minutes of Pushit while straddling an over-excited fan lol. Tool Army be weird sometimes.

Ive also heard its cuz his was of singing can be very bad and destroy vocal chords I had a theory that hes in the back now because he doesnt really scream as much on stage and hit those long high notes like he used to, thats why their isnt many long high notes yells or screams on the new album but he he left the front of the stage to distract from that by giving the audience more of the rest of the band, also most live shows they only play from the salival album and his screams are less drawn out in those songs, for the most part. Eather way I like him being in the back he looks ominous when you see his silhouette moving like a crazy mad man in the darkness lol
I've also heard him say "how the hell can I stand in front of this band?" And Danny's drums mess with his mic.

So many schisms because ppl believe differently and don't communicate properly, so there's no understanding of the other side's pov. Therefore, hatred moves in and disturbs everything involved. Aside from personal preference and stage act; They write the music before he makes the lyrics, hence the background (last) to be seen.

From an engineering standpoint you want to try to mimick the sound of the way the album is mixed. As a general rule of thumb in mixing the vocals should sit up front evenly panned in the mix. In Tools case the vocals sit behind the guitars hence why maynard is behind them on stage. Coincidentally maynard has stage fright. It could be that intentionally implemented in the mix like that because artistically he wants that to reflect that in the music for live performances.
MJK started being on line or behind Danny for sound quality during live performances. They sound the same if not better live than their albums. Also, give Ticks and leeches a try. It follows Parabola on the album

Dallas Texas here. 2 songs of recommend to do next, because who can pick a favorite, is H. And eulogy. I appreciate your reactions because it seems like you actually understand the songs both on the surface and their deeper meanings. From my understanding Maynard doesn't front during live shows anymore (with TOOL) for the same reason that he didn't want their music on streaming services for so long, and that's because the albums in total is a complex piece of work that should not be separated and should be listened to in order and so with live performance his presence should not be taking away from any other part of any song. I do watch a few other reactors here on RUclips, and I've never seen any of them do a live reactions and take requests from viewers which I think would be cool to interact with you as you react to songs. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing your next reactions!

The 2 tool songs I'd listen to are Lateralus and Third eye.
I could honestly just listen to those 2 songs and not get bored for a week lol.
You should go back to Tool's first album, Undertow which included Sober, and listen from the beginning. Keep the lyrics nearby and as you go through all the albums you'll experience the band's musical evolution into polyrhythms and longer compositions as well as Maynard's lyrics maturing. Returning frequently to ideas of evolution and growth through overcoming fear and anger. Recognizing the dark (shadow) side of one's mind requires the prerequisite for growth which is honesty. Without honesty, there's no growth. But honesty is hard because we're afraid of the truth of our shadow. And keep your eyes open for the jokes. Maynards got a sense of humor. Albeit a bit dark. You just have to commit and go all in.

Maynard stopped being frontal stage for one reason, imho: it IS NOT about HIM. It's about the music. If he's up front, where everyone can see him, then the ones bearing witness lose sight of the true gift and message that's being given to them. At their concerts, they do not allow flash photography, cell phones, etc., because the one thing you need to recall, review, and relive came before technology...your mind! Loved it, bro. that little freestyle segment on that bridge was kinda dope tho and more of what i like to hear. i’m a big fan of rap metal but it’s so hard to find really *good* rap metal. i want to hear more rappers like you over instrumentals like this. a real bridge between both cultures. if i had to pick two Tool songs they would prolly have to be The Patient and Lateralus.
