They actually received a lot of flack for this song from fans stating it wasn’t metal enough. They used an orchestra and people didn’t like it. I love it.
Yeah for me it was the other way around. I was a Metallica fan, but after their first S&M album I moved on to symphonic metal. Metallica made me realise that metal just needs an orchestra. 🙂

I get so tickled listening to you and others who find out that rock and metal weren't just noise and long hair, there were outstanding musicians and lyricists in those groups. Glad to see and hear your delight in discovering them!
This is one of the best pieces of music ever. It is about the unbreakable connections we form with our loved ones. This is about James and his girlfriend, but the message is universal!
Check out Carolne Baran's version with Post Modern Jukebox. She makes you really feel the lyrics. She's 15 years old, and totally amazing. I highly recommend that you explore this.
@@SoulReaver904 the core was James and his girlfriend at the time, but as it is with many of the Metallica songs, it is very applicable to many situations and has multiple meanings... For some of the band this could have been an ode to Cliff too.
The song is about his girlfriend at the time and how much he missed her when he was on tour. Also Elton John has said several times that it’s the most beautiful song ever written. You can actually listen to Elton John zoom call James on the Howard Stern Show to tell him what he thinks about the song. James gets very emotional about what Elton says.
I'm so glad you like this type of music as well.i feel all music is energy and no matter what genre, if it hits you, it hits you!!! If, you actually love music and emotion!!!! Respect brotha 💪🏽💪🏽🔥
I did not have a traditional wedding. I walked to this song to my forever mate. whom I now have been married to for 39 yrs and Nothing Else Matters!!!!
The beauty of this song is it can be about so many things. A relationship with a loved one, a relationship with a higher power, the band's relationship and trust in each other, or to the fans of Metallica that have followed and supported them for years. When this is done live, and you are part of that crowd singing... it is transcendental. It feels like you are part of a family. The band refers to their fans as the "Metallica Family," I have followed them since their beginning and now have 3 generations (me, my sons, and grandkids) going to Met concerts. It's an amazing thing!
Absolutely. Like fine art, it is open to interpretation. Even their song .aater Of Puppets, which is definitely about drugs and how they take over your life and control you, is open for each person to feel which vice or aspect of life it is about for them.
i always assumed it was about the brotherhood of their band. that's the great part about music, we place our meaning onto it. it doesn't always matter what the original meaning was.
This is about when you are in the most beautiful relationship in the world that nobody else understands...but who cares? Nothing else matters. Love it.
There’s a gorgeous live performance of this on Howard Stern with Metallica and MILEY Cyrus! She sings lead and it’s spectacular- she is meant for Metal!
I think reacting without the homework is so much more authentic. Also, it allows you to interpret it the way you see it without other influences. Great job BP.
I like that the "homework" he does, happens DURING the video! It's just so fun to see more than just a reaction from someone who's passionate about learning more and more
You gotta watch the clip where Elton John videocalls a show that had Metallica on, starts praising this song.. James Hetfield cant help but shed a couple of tears hearing one of the most respected musicians in the world talk about a personal love song written by him, an introverted orphan who reached world fame while battling alcoholism .. Imagine the cocktail of emotions he must have had writing this ..
Metallica will be remembered hundreds of years from now, because of this song, it is that good. There is a classical guitar player that does a version of this song, and it show just how great a song it is, played that way.
The Black Album ( named “Metallica”) released in 1991 catapulted these guys from being the world’s greatest band in rock / metal to the greatest band on the planet in all music….they had a three year long World Tour with this album….some old heads turned away from them ( claiming they sold out) but millions and millions new fans surrendered to them sending Metalica into eternal stardom
I've heard this played at a wedding and a funeral, and it was completely appropriate in both settings. The best songs mean something different for each person listening without negating the composer's original intent, and this is one of the greatest. Huge respect to you for opening yourself to new musical experiences. Love the fact that you're prepared to make yourself a little vulnerable by doing them completely blind. Have you thought about exploring some classical pieces? I think it may deepen your appreciation for other musical genres and how musicians go about their craft. Just an idea ✌️
Really appreciate you going in blind. I worked with a contemporary artist who held the view that people who didn't understand art, shouldn't bother going to art galleries. He wanted everyone to be fully aware of the context, the meaning the artist had intended when creating a piece. It hurt my soul to hear him say that - art of any kind, be it visual or sound is for everyone and can have a profound affect on us. I worked in a museum where an Ikebana floral arrangement moved a middle-aged man to tears. I ended up hugging him as he explained it had suddenly reminded him of a recently deceased friend. So I don't believe limit should be put on interpretations and gut emotional responses to created works. As for this song, I always took the lyrics as being about his solidarity with his band members, being open and vulnerable when singing and through the lyrics he writes, that nothing matters more to him than creating authentic art - that's my interpretation anyhoo. Like you - I enjoy going digging into meanings and intentions later. 🥰 A stunning track, so glad you listened.
BP~ I LOVE your reactions!!❣️These are songs that I’ve loved for 30-40 years!🙋♀️🙌 You are very open, sincere & genuine. I’m not sure if you’d even care, but I can ONLY watch reactions with you, alone. I can’t watch when that other guy is with you. He doesn’t take anything seriously and he distracts you from the spirit and key points of the songs.
My little brothers introduced me to Metallica in the lates 80's early 90's. Still to this day I have Metallica Days. I listen to them all day long. I can identify with most of their music. They are Awesome in concert too! Some of my favorites is the song ONE, UNFORGIVEN 1&2, DON'T TREAD ON ME and FADE TO BLACK. I really wish you would check some of these out! BTW I like watching you discover different types of Music. It take you on a journey if you let it. Thank you this is a great reaction. Keep it up!
The whole Black album is fire, but my favorite Metallica albums are the S&M albums!! They're backed by The San Francisco Symphony, and it's a whole different experience!! No leaf clover, and Hero of the day are 2 of my favorite songs off of those albums! Definitely worth a peep! And James is 💯 a poet!!
This song is off the Black Album( album 5) James wrote this song about a girlfriend but didn’t want to release it.( so you’re on point). Later Lars ( the drummer) insisted on recording it and it became Metallica’s anthem. It resonated their journey and became a tribute to each other. By this time they were on their 3rd bassist ( Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted). 2nd guitarist ( Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett). McGovney left, Mustaine was kicked out but Burton died in a tour bus wreck in Germany. Burton was a musical student but not at Juilliard. The rest were just teenage rockers. Burton’s influence is apparent in a lot of their music( especially their earlier albums).
Cliff and Lars flipped a coin or something like that for a certain bunk. Cliff won the bunk and the driver claimed he hit black ice but James ran up and down the road in his underwear and never saw any black ice.
This was a love song that James Hetfield (guitar/ vocals) wrote to his then-girlfriend while he was away on tour w/ Metallica... The other members were shocked that a love song was going on Metallica's 5th album in 1991 (the massive-selling 'black' album) and 'Nothing else matters' became a pop hit in 1992... Sadly, James and her broke up after the record was done... Metallica never made religious songs - they always made song bashing religious zealots because James lost his mom to cancer as a teen after she refused treatment... She was a devout Christian science follower who believed that 'God' would heal her through prayer and faith. That loss affected James Hetfield for the rest of his life... He wrote 'The God that failed' about his mom's misplaced faith... He wrote 'The Unforgiven' and "Dyers' eve" about his parents failing him in life (His dad left when he was a kid... He experienced a lot of abuse growing up and drove him to alcoholism).
You can always tell when he's enjoying a song more than some of the other songs..... Because he waits longer to pause it before he starts making comments lol - Love this song! Love this channel

Please do Fade to Black. You will be amazed at how many people come out and say the song saved their lives. Crucial Metallica song if you’re a true fan!
Hetfield wrote the song initially about missing his girlfriend while they were on the road but was meant to be interpreted however you’d like. I hardly listen to the song as a fan but when I do hear it I really appreciate its beauty and Hetfields writing. His solo is iconic.

I'll never forget when I was in high school I was super into music, art, history, and nerd shit like World of Warcraft. I'll never forget the day that I was showing a friend the stuff I had earned in the game my "gear" that my character wore. That I worked hard for. I'm a nerdy white kid, and this other kid I knew who was all about that street life walked by doing his gangster walk. He's like a tough street kid that could scare a nerd. He walks by and sees what I'm showing my other nerdy friend. He says "Oh shit! Is that World of Warcraft?? You got fucking Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros?? (it's just a super rare and fancy weapon in the game) Wtf! That's crazy!!! Check out my Warrior he has Thunderfurry!" We instantly became friends after talking nerd shit for an entire hour. It blew my mind because we could not have been from two more different walks of life and in one instant, we both knew we were brothers. That's the type of feeling you get as a rap head when a metalhead comes around to the magic of rap, or visa versa. It's like how music is the universal language, you don't even have to understand the words for it to communicate with you. It's a magically thing if you are open and receptive to it.
My husband and I had this as our first dance song at our wedding. I still get butterflies every time i listen to it. Just plain and simple, “Nothing else matters”.
The last consert I saw was Metallica in Phoenix AZ around 1998. Most hard rock bands do Ballads which are usually my favorites. This song to me is one to sit back, close your eyes and feel it. Depending on ones life experiences it could mean different things to each individual listining to it.
Better late than never brother! BTW, my FIRST concert, turning 16 a month later, saw Metallica. I had bought a special outfit for the occasion. Two YEARS after I saw the concert I wore the SAME outfit for my senior high pictures! I wanted that to be a memory FOREVER!
If you ever want to indulge a guilty pleasure, watch Nothing Else Matters/Enter Sandman live in a relict colosseum in France.. The showmanship, the ambiance, the MUSIC, the show... There aren't enough words. Just watch it Nothing Else Matters could also be a sentiment between Metallica and their 'Metal-Head fans as well🤘
I think it’s the band mates and also relationships you have with individuals. The outsiders don’t matter it’s whatever is between you and you have each other’s backs and nothing else matters.
Just found your channel and I am very entertained by your work. I love seeing your reactions to the music that was the backdrop of my life. This was the song my first bride walked down the aisle to at our wedding. Too bad the marriage didn’t age as well as the song.
This song was played IN THE CHURCH at one of my best friend's funeral. I haven't listened to Metallica in years, but he still loved them. It was perfect and beautiful. And as he was brought out, before heading to the crematorium, they played Foo Fighters - Times Like This. Very emotional.
Everyone used to read the lyrics... that was my first listen to every album I bought in my youth. Get home from the record store, headphones in, listen, read along, look at the artwork. It was a whole tactile, sensual experience.
Finally got to see Metallica in concert last November in Detroit... They did a show with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills.. One hell of a show and such a stage presence...
Hello and Grüezi as we in little Switzerland 🇨🇭 say Black Pegasus 🙃🤘🏼 I'm a just few years older (48) and when the Black Album came out with Nothing Else Matters and the many other classics from this album, my second live show was Metallica on their world tour in 1993 when I was 15! Their very last concert on their 3 year world tour in Basel Switzerland! Before that, I was able to experience my very first Metallica concert as a little 10-year-old metal and, above all, a Metallica fan! Thanks go to my big sister, who is 10 years older and made this experience possible for me as a little boy of 10 to see this band live! To date I have been able to experience Metallica live a good 25 times as a guest/fan, and 12 times as part of a direct security team, personal protection team - escort - driver alongside their own personal protection team around Tom Robb, the legend Hellboysecurity! Always totally professional and serious, not a "groupie/fan" approach, but it's the greatest and most beautiful thing for you when, as a 10-year-old, you can be so close to your idols in music, who were 20+ years old, 15 years later in your work can last for many, many hours on such a concert tour day! Just 🤯🤯🤯 for me!!! And then when Tom Robb brings the whole band up to you backstage to want to hear this story and experience of "yes, I saw you there live when I was 10" and they were able to laugh and then remember a special incident themselves that happened, I knew about it, but it wasn't until many years later through my job that the laughter from Lars, James and Kirk who were there was even louder and unforgettable! Great band, people, personalities who have experienced and endured a lot in their long career! Greetings from 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🤘🏼😉
In the start I thought you was just one of "them", after watching the analysis and the video I respect you 👍🤘 I hope they will play this song in my funeral 🎶 🤘
The best way to get what you want is to *tell someone* what you want at your funeral. Tell a couple of people. Put it in your will ... and tell a couple of people you (1) have a will plus (2) which attorney drew up the papers so they can contact the attorney to get a copy and follow your wishes. Better yet, see a funeral director and pre-plan the whole thing. They will follow your wishes unless you request something illegal. Even then, they will make the other law-abiding instructions happen.
@@danielanderson8980 it’s a banger. Most songs on that album are. It’s only the “purists” of thrash who dislike it. I like the first 4 albums as much as the purists but I also understand musical evolution and how times and sounds change. Show me a single band who’ve sounded the same and never evolved over 30 years or so and I’ll show you a band who fell off the radar….
James wrote this song because he missed his gf at the time. I was in my first interracial relationship when this song came out so this song became our song. The black album, the album this song was on, was the first album that I got into The Mighty Met! I have been a lifetime fan since then. 💜 Also the naked pic was his gf. 😁
This was mine one one of my very 1st loves song. Total opposites, no one would think it possible. This song described us to a T. 30 years later and we are still friends.

It's like how music is the universal language, you don't even have to understand the words for it to communicate with you. It's a magically thing if you are open and receptive to it.
This was my introduction to Metallica about 25 years ago and i never looked back 🖤
You werent a Metal fan until Metallica and Rammstein. Thank you for the great reactions.
That is the Beautiful thing about music people can take it in their own way 🤘🇺🇲🇺🇲🤘
You're pretty good about reading into the meaning, without knowing. Spot on
My husband and I had this as our first dance song at our wedding. I still get butterflies every time i listen to it. Just plain and simple, “Nothing else matters”.
I think he is saying to focus on the rocks and not the grains of sand.. It is a really powerful message for confident focus.
The last consert I saw was Metallica in Phoenix AZ around 1998. Most hard rock bands do Ballads which are usually my favorites. This song to me is one to sit back, close your eyes and feel it. Depending on ones life experiences it could mean different things to each individual listining to it.
Greatest rock song ever written !! Way to go James !
Snd also, please! Do more metallica live! They sound as best live!! So much energy!!!
One great thing about Metallica is all the money they have donated to the charities all around the world.
i always felt that he is just opening up for the first time, and saying how he feels, how he sees, lives life
Metallica is one of my absolute favorite bands. They are truly artists.
Thank you! Your honesty and outlook on life and learning is refreshing.
Better late than never brother! BTW, my FIRST concert, turning 16 a month later, saw Metallica. I had bought a special outfit for the occasion. Two YEARS after I saw the concert I wore the SAME outfit for my senior high pictures! I wanted that to be a memory FOREVER!
One of the best Metalica Songs ever!!!!!!
I would rather have an honest first reaction. Thank you for being a real one
If you ever want to indulge a guilty pleasure, watch Nothing Else Matters/Enter Sandman live in a relict colosseum in France..
The showmanship, the ambiance, the MUSIC, the show... There aren't enough words. Just watch it
Nothing Else Matters could also be a sentiment between Metallica and their 'Metal-Head fans as well🤘
You should watch a few of the live performances of this song and watch both guitar jams, FIRE
Great thing about music is it’s open to interpretation. It means what ever it means to you.
I think it’s the band mates and also relationships you have with individuals. The outsiders don’t matter it’s whatever is between you and you have each other’s backs and nothing else matters.
Now this is a song that would be dope to see you sample/cover!
They are live so great!!Go and watch them live, they are so great!Love them!
Just found your channel and I am very entertained by your work. I love seeing your reactions to the music that was the backdrop of my life.
This was the song my first bride walked down the aisle to at our wedding. Too bad the marriage didn’t age as well as the song.
Art is open to interpretation, this is one of the first songs I learnt to play on guitar and sing. Metal bands write the best slow songs.
I've always viewed this song as an ode to their fans.
This song was played IN THE CHURCH at one of my best friend's funeral. I haven't listened to Metallica in years, but he still loved them. It was perfect and beautiful. And as he was brought out, before heading to the crematorium, they played Foo Fighters - Times Like This. Very emotional.
Think about the song as a conversation between yourself and a friend who has just passed. You'll get the feeling.
Everyone used to read the lyrics... that was my first listen to every album I bought in my youth. Get home from the record store, headphones in, listen, read along, look at the artwork. It was a whole tactile, sensual experience.
My husband and I danced to Apocalyptica's cover of this song for our wedding. Worth a listen from a cello rock band from Helsinki
This will always be my favorite song and video from Metallica. It is just so heartfelt.
Finally got to see Metallica in concert last November in Detroit... They did a show with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills.. One hell of a show and such a stage presence...
They dedicated this song to their fans!!💜💜🎶🎼🎵🎸🎤🥁🎧🎹🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
i love your enthusiasm! This is how I have been about Metallica every day since high school!
Hello and Grüezi as we in little Switzerland 🇨🇭 say Black Pegasus 🙃🤘🏼
I'm a just few years older (48) and when the Black Album came out with Nothing Else Matters and the many other classics from this album, my second live show was Metallica on their world tour in 1993 when I was 15!
I think you would love "Bleeding Me" from the S&M live performance and "No Leaf Clover" from S&M 2
In the start I thought you was just one of "them", after watching the analysis and the video I respect you 👍🤘
I hope they will play this song in my funeral 🎶 🤘
The best way to get what you want is to *tell someone* what you want at your funeral. Tell a couple of people. Put it in your will ... and tell a couple of people you (1) have a will plus (2) which attorney drew up the papers so they can contact the attorney to get a copy and follow your wishes.
Better yet, see a funeral director and pre-plan the whole thing. They will follow your wishes unless you request something illegal. Even then, they will make the other law-abiding instructions happen.
There's a "Don't Tread on Me" song on this album...and it's🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥#GadsdenFlag
If you like the “don’t tread on me” logo, you have to hear their song “Don’t Tread on Me”….. the first words of that song are “Liberty or Death”….
Ridiculously slept on song. Don’t Tread On Me is an absolute favorite.
@@fattony986 agreed. The black album got me into the rest of their stuff and it remains my personal favorite.
the best produced album ever. shout out to Bob Rock for creating this legendary album
It's never too late to get out of your comfort zone. Keep going! There's so much more or there.
Played it on our Wedding. Love it forever!
Chris Stapleton just did a version about 2 years ago.... Sounds Great!!
One of the values in Genius art is its transcendence quality, its ability to transcend the meaning of the originator, and have many other meanings to many other people.
You nailed it on the head black p you said wow yo whoooi yaa. Nice. You get it black p. Yeah do all the things Metallica related for sure. I'm sure all will show up to the gig!! 👍
1 more, saw interview where sir elton john said this was one of the best songs he has heard. Great praise
One of my favourite songs ever!
It's never too late to find Metallica. Welcome to the party, everyone is welcomed
One from Metallica is one of the best songs ever about the war in Vietnam. I am blown away every time I hear it they have so many hits it is nuts.
It came out many years after the end of the Vietnam War and is about Hetfeld's girlfriend, not the war
Better late than never!! It brings my soul so much joy to see you react to music that has inspired me for decades!!!! Binge watching the Metallica reactions❤❤ I love how much you love them. I learn so much about music that I love and I'm reminded why we all love them so much!!
Kid Rock American badass live at Woodstock 94 is 🔥
My nephew played this for me at my wedding. To me it's about the ultimate acceptance of whatever you love.
