Maynard James Keenan writes all the lyrics and singing parts, the other three Danny Carey (Drummer), Justin Chancellor (Bassist), Adam Jones (Electric Guitar and Synth) write all the musical parts and then jam together until something clicks. They write and record and produce the music down to nearly finishing the mix before Maynard the singer writes the lyrics. The music is first and then he writes his lyrics around the first experience he has listening through the song. He writes how he will sing it and then fills in the lyrics that work. He is a genius, I mean they are all masters at their best.
We are known as the Tool Army . Some passionate fans get out of hand but they mean good 😂. What I love about tool is the reactors , they either get it or are confused af. You’ve done a song for three albums undertow has to be next 👀 great reactions guys
During the period of the writing/recording sessions for the Lateralus album, the band had nearly broke up a few times. A lot of the lyrical content for the album is reflective of the internal atmosphere at the time.
They were never at a point where they were considering breaking up. They were going through a lawsuit where an artist friend of theirs thought he deserved rights to some artwork he collaborated with Adam on. Of course, dragging them through court dissolved the relationship... I don't think this song is about any of that.
I hope , they come this or next year to switzerland!!!. I love this band so much. I' m over 62 years old, i was over 22 years musicsaler, but i didnt know, that tool is so extreamly good.
Really enjoying the journey so far, guys. Please keep doing more Tool, your channel will grow each time you post a new one. 😊 This is a favourite of mine from when it was first released. 20 years later, I still lose myself in it. And literally every other Tool track. 🙂 Try something from their latest album. Go straight to the top, Descending, the greatest piece of art ever produced. Thanks again, keep up the great work 🙂🤜🤛
The meaning and reason for the name “Tool” has shifted through the years as the band has matured and grown as adults. When they started the band they were in their late 20s. Basically a “Tool” is another way of saying someone’s a dick or literally a man’s dick. Their first Demotape from 1991 “72826” had a cover of a wrench with two lug nuts at the bottom, you get the idea. Through the years they have said many times they want their music to help people heal and grow within themselves, they want to be a TOOL for people to improve themselves and basically be respectful to others. Basically don’t be a Tool! 😅😂
first it's confusion - as it sounds so alien and different from most of the regular 4/4 pop/hip-hop/rock stuff etc. Next comes the sense of intrigue as one begins to realize it's not just a random cacophony but that it rather has a definite yet difficult to fully grasp structure. Then finally, when it clicks - not a single note or a drum stroke will feel out of place.
Great reaction! As you listen to more Tool your understanding will grow, and you'll look back on songs like Forty-Six & 2 with new perspective and appreciation. Tool has their own sound, but their albums also have individual and distinct personalities due to the band's own growth and maturity as people. Someone else mentioned going to Undertow next, which was their first full album. I could agree, but if the drums are really hooking you I'd recommend the live Vic Firth drum-cam video for Pneuma. The song is on their most recent album Fear Inoculum, and while the song is amazing all around, the drumming... oh my god, the drumming...
Lol, AFAIK you had the right terms, just a bit mixed up...Amanda was correct that the drum is doing a roll (Rhythmic hits in quick succession) instead of a fill (Improvised playing in-between rhythmic measures) but the drummer Danny likes his poly-rhythms so it can often sound like a fill when it's not...and you were close with "Hammer Pull"...you are actually combining two versions of the same idea, "Hammer-ons" where you play a note then afterward press your finger down hard on a fret to change the sound...and "Pull-offs" where you play the note with the string held down, then release it while it's still vibrating to change the sound...
@Jody and Amanda - Love your Gulf Hat. Both my mom and dad worked for Gulf Oil before the company filed for bankruptcy in ‘85, from the mid to late 70’s and all the way till the early 80’s.
Tool is a symbol for progress. Something we use to overcome obsticles and boundries. From an evolutionary perspective using tools is what seperates humans from animals. In a way music can be a tool aswell. Perfect band name.
Love the reaction. I'm pretty sure you both will enjoy "pushit" live salival version. Have lyrics up also. Pnuema drum cam is a great look of Danny and what a beast he is and why one of his nicknames is the octopus
Adam, Justin, and Danny create the music. Maynard writes the lyrics. In 1994, Danny Carey said the band name stands for how they want their music to be a "tool" to aid in understanding lachrymology. Lachrymology is the art of crying as a type of therapy. However, this was just another rumor they started (as many bands do) to keep us (or them) entertained. Maynard the singer has 3 bands that are active: Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. There have been different theories concerning the actual premise of Tool’s “Schism”. Some say it is based on divisions in the church. Others speculate that it is founded in tension Tool were experiencing. This tension was due to frontman Maynard Keenan being simultaneously committed to another band as well as legal issues they were going through. But no matter the real-life genesis of the lyrics, one thing is clear. It is clear that the lyrics are centered on a relationship the singer is in that is suffering from a “schism”. Simply put, there is a major ideological beef between the parties involved. And to be totally honest, the way the band presents the song makes it sound like the relationship they are talking about is actually a romance. Maynard is basically saying in this track is that whereas he is having a difficult time seeing eye-to-eye with the other person(s) involved in the relationship, he believes things can be worked out amicably. He believes that this is possible since the parties have successfully coexisted in the past. It is beyond obvious he is bothered by the current state of the situation. However, he also perceives some “beauty” and even potential constructiveness from the current discontent. Indeed he understands that this particular union is “doomed to crumble”. However, he believes it can be saved. It can be rescued if communication between himself and the addressee is ‘strengthened’.
I see this song as an evolution of Pushit (from earlier album, Aenima) - which deals with similar themes in a more frustrated and angry way, whereas this song seems to be trying to look at those same issues from a different angle with a hope for reconciliation and healing
This song is about the band and them knowing this is what their music is supposed to sound like. It’s a struggle to get where they’re going, including losing Paul along the way but that it’s worth it in the end. And no one that likes rock music could argue that.
Your analysis shows why they chose the name “Tool”. The lyrics and music is written vaguely but with an overall encompassing topic that leaves the interpretation up to the listener and to be used as a tool that helps them in whatever situation they are being presented with. Whether this song is about family, friends, relationships, society, coworkers, etc, the message applies to it all. Almost every single song that Maynard writes serves this purpose with the exception of a small handful of songs. Those are more story telling than sending a message (Wings for Marie and Rosetta Stoned as an example). Great reaction tho! Keep them coming!
OK, this is my fourth video watching you both. This is my observation....Amanda, you clearly get tool. You get there genius. You see, hear and fathom that they are something...more. Jody. Jody. You are in complete denial. You are searching for every reason to dislike them. 😀 Listen, Kemosabe...they are the greatest. Band. Ever! Just give in. Like Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, and Bobby Fischer, they are on another level. Give in. Give in.
Jody! Danny Carey is not, nor will he ever be a “fill”! They call him “The Octopus” for a reason! My God, man! Who are you defending? Are you in a band? What is it that you cannot admit that Tool is better at this than you or I will be at anything, ever? Where does this disdain come from?
Nope, sorry! Your guess was too specific. The song is about relationships in general and not, Maynard's girlfriend. It is about deteriorating relationships and the desperate, agonizing struggle to make them whole again.
Great reaction I love this song. This is the only song in the world to ever use the word juxtaposed in the lyrics. 😁 I disagree partially with your assessment of the meaning of the lyrics. To me it's a much more macro thing than a situation between individuals I believe he's referring to humanity as a whole.
“Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers!” Best line, take note lady’s.
also, Society
Says cucked ex boyfriend
Also men
All of us

Bass guitar up front on this classic Tool tune 🔥
The guitar you like is actually the bass. Justin is a beast....
Notice though:
the time signature is 12/8 split unevenly as 5/8;7/8, to create an actual schism in the music
We are known as the Tool Army . Some passionate fans get out of hand but they mean good 😂. What I love about tool is the reactors , they either get it or are confused af. You’ve done a song for three albums undertow has to be next 👀 great reactions guys
I mean I have been called a Tool but I doubt it’s for the same reason 😂

Just found your channel but I'm loving the Tool reactions! My favorite band and I've seen them live three times!
I hope , they come this or next year to switzerland!!!. I love this band so much. I' m over 62 years old, i was over 22 years musicsaler, but i didnt know, that tool is so extreamly good.
Best band ever and having the lyrics pulled up is a smart move. Let's see more:)
Rage against machine featuring Maynard from tool “know your enemy “

I was just gonna say "tool = penis" but you put it so much better 😂

Angry or not, every song is powerful. You cant really go wrong with them, but it may be better to listen to them in chronological order. Spiral out!

"Tool" Is the music the 4 men make together.
OMG I'm hearing Schism for the first time in 2023 OMG
Right at 6:50 is what they call a "Toolgasm". There's at least one, sometimes two in all of their songs.
I believe he said lovers twice. Lyrics online are wrong sometimes
It's brothers then lovers - though you are right in your second assessment, you are wrong in your first. :)

It was about a "family thing". The band had some hard times in the late 1990's and were close to breaking up. That's what the song is about.
Adam, Justin, and Danny create the music. Maynard writes the lyrics. In 1994, Danny Carey said the band name stands for how they want their music to be a "tool" to aid in understanding lachrymology. 8 Am ?!!! i would be still dreaming lol
Tool is named Tool because they want you to use their music as a tool and use it when you need it.
Exactly my take. Spot on! 🤟✌️
The body is the mind's tool
I see this song as an evolution of Pushit (from earlier album, Aenima) - which deals with similar themes in a more frustrated and angry way, whereas this song seems to be trying to look at those same issues from a different angle with a hope for reconciliation and healing
once you jump in to descending or tempest… Game over
You should check out the title track, Lateralus.
Love your vibe...don't know if you are Pac. NW but that's what I get...keep it up...🤙

I think it was about the band at the time. They were stressed cause they were having legal issues.
Welcome to the Spiral.
That’s the bass
Vicarious next please
Find the beauty in the dissonance...Tool = sonic and lyrical wizardry!
Just because we’re listening, doesn’t mean we hear each other.

OK, this is my fourth video watching you both. This is my observation....Amanda, you clearly get tool. You get there genius. You see, hear and fathom that they are something...more.

Nope, sorry! Your guess was too specific. The song is about relationships in general and not, Maynard's girlfriend. It is about deteriorating relationships and the desperate, agonizing struggle to make them whole again.
I read somewhere that's its about the band having creative differences. Not sure if this is true or just a rumor.
singer write lyrics, after instrumentals. I think he like to wibe it first
Anyone else think this guy needs to study up a bit?
Great reaction I love this song. This is the only song in the world to ever use the word juxtaposed in the lyrics. 😁 I disagree partially with your assessment of the meaning of the lyrics. I’m sorry but Forty Six & Two can be argued to be TOOLS best song. The Pot not so much although it is a banger as well.
Their best song is whatever one I’m listening to at the time. The end.
This song requires a lot of listens to really feel it, if you're not used to unusual time signatures.
Oh i know this one oh i know this one to, alright am out
Look a the dictionary ..tool
Not about one
About all
The band being called Tool is unironically just a dick joke.
Y'all are only 1 song deep into 3 out of 5 albums worth of good songs..
Don't know the diference between guitar and bass sonyou blow
You didn’t guess the meaning, you researched it before you went on to try to impress you, lady, LMAO I’m sure predictions are not your strong point
