Tool is the only band that can make me cry and be angry at the same time. I can't decide if it's because they make me mad or sad or just feel my own feelings lol
@@scarlettletterman9271 yep. I like to lie to myself and say I'm mad because I'm crying. The truth is much simpler...or complex? It's very confusing. What I do know is they make me feel...more than any other music I've ever heard.
This was LIVE folks!!! I know you know this but I have to constantly remind myself of that because the musicianship displayed here is beyond masterful!!
this was recorded at the E-center in Salt Lake City on August 15th 1998. i was there for this one, it was absolutely amazing. still remember the feeling through this song as it was played and re-experience it every time i hear it. another great thing about this concert i remember is the intro they used to play called Merkaba (which means "vehicle of ascension"). it was a 20 min intro into sober. mind blowing. love your reactions!!!
The Salival version of Pushit is my favorite even though I heard the studio version first. I think my preference is mostly based on the fact that it really showcases Maynard's voice. I appreciate the fact that with many of Tool's songs he isn't typically the focal point of the music; he's in the mix like another instrument. So this makes this version of Pushit unique.
Oh and someone else may have already said, but “Third Eye” from Salival DOES have a video on RUclips - dodgy video, but matched with the Salival audio makes for a good watch.
Ngl I’m kind of glad to hear you say you prefer the studio version, to me it seems like most people tend to like this one more, and while I appreciate it for what it is, I honestly have a hard time understanding why
This is a good transitional track to the sound of Lateralus. I had the pleasure of hearing them play this version live in 97’. One of my favorite songs of all time
album version, but yea he killed the vocals thats my fav. part when he sings the " i must persude you another way" . tool songs do grow on you upon more listening. great reaction again see you on the next one
This is my favourite song by tool (apart from the one I'm listening to...) and I find myself swinging between both versions as my favourite depending on my mood. The studio is raw and angry and trying to work out the relationship and conflict. The live version seems much more introspective as if looking back on that time from a more measured voice, but still builds into the raw wound of the conflict which is still unresolved to a point. I'm also very impressed that the band as well are able to reinterpret their work to fit Maynard's narrative.
Such a great way to bridge the gap between albums with this song. The band is starting to evolve at this point, letting go of the anger and becoming more spiritual. They are honing in on their skills and mastering their craft which you’ll understand once you get to Lateralus. It’s always hard to answer the question on what do you like better once you’ve heard the entire Tool discography. It will be based on where your head is at in that moment. Another great reaction Skullz, looking forward to the next one!
I felt the same as you did, I liked the album version better when I first heard this one. But over time and several times hearing this live version it has really grown on me, I really enjoy how raw it is and how this band can just create! Honestly this band just doesn’t put out a bad song! Their worst stuff is better than a lot of bands best stuff. Great reaction! Always look forward to your take on their songs.
So after watching this for the second time from your review, I would like to have you check out "Tool Pushit Berlin 2022 it's there studio version but you can see what there modern concerts are like since the video you did of Sober when they were young. It's to bad you didn't get to see them of this last tour but they should do more in the future. I can't strongly suggest you see them live. By the time they tour again you would of almost finished their collection of music. If you did two a week I wouldn't complain. You've been the best at reviewing them. I love your prospective about the songs both lyrically and as musicians. Can't wait for the reviews of the next three albums.
Well humans I'm a drummer and most drummers know that danny is an idol of the dead Bohnam now. Perspectives are quite interesting do you not think so also?
So glad you came to this. It took me a little to ease into this one, but I deeply appreciate it now. Danny has a nice little turn on this track with the bongo/tribal drum work. It's VERY trace-sustaining and atmospheric. PLEASE do their cover/tribute to Led Zep's "No Quarter", from this album next! It is up within probably my top 5 favorites...truly a sound journey and Maynard has some beautiful, sustained high notes that are incredibly powerful! Also....Danny's gong makes a cameo and it's totally epic!
God I love the part towards the end "Managed to push myself away and you as well my dear." Just the way he delivers those lyrics at that point, right before the band is about to Crescendo together 🤯😵💀
Did you notice the different bass line from 13:53 to 14:04 in your video, as compared to the studio version? In the studio, the bass is kept tense sounding but live Justin opens it wide open with some meandering notes. So incredibly better on this live version. I met Justin at the 2015 meet and greet in Tempe and told him thank you for that nuance that makes the earth open up and swallow us for those 11 seconds. He knew exactly the spot I was talking about.
The studio version of Pushit was my favorite song when I first started listening to Tool, but the more I listened to this one the more it overtook the original as my favorite. Maynard’s vocals are just so powerful it gives me chills every time.
It was the other way around for me I heard the Salival version first but then when I heard the studio I was like holy fuck it’s really two completely different songs like opiate 1 & 2 both have different vibes and i love both of them almost equally
for me it depends on how im feeling at the time. if i feel angsty or pissed, definitely the album version. if im feeling a bit more sympathetic or introspective it would definitely be the salival version.
Whichever version I happen to be listening to is my favorite. The thing about the Salival version is that it pulls stronger emotion from me than the studio version.
This song….omg thank you for reacting to it. Yes I favor this version over the studio. It has such a spiritual feeling to it and a release of negative energy. I wish I could of seen this so bad.
Alright, alright ....let's get on to Lateralus ...Please ! Everytime I get the notification I am disappointed and excited at the same time. Thanks, loving all of them either way !
thanks for doin this version man! i like this version more because of the slower build up and the fact that its Live and tool doesn't really ever record any live shows. Cheers!
@@rayyman6934 thats good to know. I have always hoped that when they retire some day, they would finally release a big box set sorta thing with a bunch of well recorded shows, video and all. Leave that for us since we wouldnt be able to see them live anymore.
I prefer this version. The only way I can make that determination is the fact I get bigger chills everytime I hear this one as compared to the original. Now that you're on the Salival album, you need to do the No Quarter cover, but first listen to the original by Led Zeppelin if you havent already heard it.
Thank you for the time you spend on these reactions. Always appreciated! As to as which version I prefer, is impossible for me to say. Both are almost completely different songs and feelings. I love both.
Saw them this January when they were in Newark…they played the studio version and it was the highlight of the show for me…that said I would have preferred to hear this version. It is a more healing version in a way …the best way to describe the studio version is it leaves me feeling still in the moment, tense and worried. kinda like waking up from a bad dream where your powerless and thinking it was real …this version has more finality to it. That helps
You lied is amazing they basically made the song their own same with no quarter between the two no quarter is better but better is a word that should be taken very loosely with tool because all of their songs they’ve ever dropped has been 1000/10 works
Of course bro! 💯 I think I put it in a sort of Misc playlist since it was off the Salival album. I should just make a playlist for Salival and make it easier to find haha
Took a bit for this one to grow on me. Thanks for the reaction. It’s really a meditative song and hard to react to. I think it’s meant to be inherently immersive, as stated in the beginning. But you pulled it through and stuck in out in good faith. You da real MVP 14:09 is satisfaction 15:39 you got me vibin with ya!
I'm team Salival! Hearing it live was unreal. Sure you get loud at the show... but you summed it up in describing Tool as polished. Maynard was in full beast mode when they played this. Great review!
I'm definitely in the original version camp. Best track on Salival is their version of Zeppelin's No Quarter. It's probably up there as one of the best covers of all time. Equally as good as say, The Animals cover of Paint It Black-originally of course, by the Rolling Stones. Both arguably as good as the original
No quarter cover is so good that Zeppelin said they were blown away and had never heard a better version of one of their songs being covered before, its so good Howard stern was so pissed because zoo ent wouldn’t give them the rights to use the song in his movie and started a beef with Maynard lmao but in recent times Howard has admitted that he’s still a big fan of Tool said their probably the best band of the 90’s and it’s all water under the bridge
@@hank35682 Exactly. TooL was also asked to perform the song live at the Led Zeppelin Honorary show where Heart covered Stairway to Heaven. However when they were asked to trim the song due to time, they refused declining the offer to play
I listened to the album version of this song hundreds and hundreds of times before I heard this version. At that point in my life, I wasnt open or vulnerable enough to reallly be able to enjoy it. It took a few listens to grow on me, and now I find it very moving. I still probably prefer the studio version, but my appreciation for this version has grown. However, as with most ppl, and most Tool songs, my favorite is usually the one i'm listening to in the moment. There's this weird thing with Tool where you almost forget how epic their songs are until you hear them again..
This version took me while to appreciate. I like to equate the studio record as the conflict of the ego/ persona, aka on external fight. Whereas this is the struggle and fight within himself the id/ subconscious. In order to connect with that inner self you must be come vulnerable. As you transcend from the Animus to the Anima and vice versa, you have to be vulnerable and open to change. Please react to Third Eye from this same cd next!! Btw, I enjoy seeing the joy and enthusiasm you have when hearing this amazing band for the first time!! Thanks Bro!!
my connection with the studio is too strong...but my first time listening to this i was in the perfect atmosphere...It was at night just coming back from a run..tool was great to run to...I got some water and laid down on the dining room floor and mind you I trip out on life pretty easily...so when this song came on..I did melt into it ..its a little rough around the edges in spots but has some really special moments that hit spiritually so in the moment it was amazing...but the studio is my go to version typically....
So excited to see this pop up! I find the tone in Maynard’s voice in the 2nd half of the song somehow feels a little lighter than the album version. Even singing the same words, he seems to be singing from a place of sadness and hopelessness rather than anger. Chilling. 🙌🏻
Dammit. I wrote this before I even watched your reaction. You said the exact same thing about anger and retrospection. Maybe that’ll serve me right for writing before watching. 🤦🏻♂️
I seldom comment on RUclips, but what I feel almost no one gets is the slight difference in a specific part of the song. Compare what they do on the album version, starting at 7:35 and what they play on the live version starting at 11:15 (or 13:51 on your reaction video). Maybe take the time and hear the part before to come in. It is the same part of the same song, but because they have recomposed and rearranged only one instrument, one of them feels soooo much better. There is a lot I like more about the original studio version. But this little detail makes the studio version feel so uncompleted and stiff and lifeless. I am so glad to have seen them live this year, when they kind of combined both versions. They played the Aenema version of the song, but right here, they played the new one.
For a long time I was strictly album version, but this one has grown on me and sometimes the emotion of it hits just right. Aloke Dutta, who was one of Danny's teachers is also playing the tabla in this version.
And the last comment , A TOOL song will hit you when you need it The undefined open thoughts of the songs do flow in and out and change over time Then it seems like one wasn’t your favorite , hits home hard Keep it up If you do “ NO Quarter please check out the Led Zeppelin version first. Not to compare but only prospective
There actually is a live video of this but the CD version sounds better than the footage so you made the right choice lmao there is a third eye Salival live video that’s synched perfectly with the audio if you wanna check that out anyways this track is such a great piece of art, If your still waiting to start lateralus you should do third eye off this album or no quarter for sure
Whichever one you are listening to at that moment is best.
When I was at their concert and heard this live, I sat at the edge of my seat with giant tears in my eyes. Absolute elation.

For a long time I was strictly album version, but this one has grown on me and sometimes the emotion of it hits just right. Aloke Dutta, who was one of Danny's teachers is also playing the tabla in this version.
That's freaking awesome! 🤘❤️
I just 🖤 this version. I think it’s mainly because it’s live. MJK’s voice is amazing in this! In my top 5 for sure.
I'll have to revisit it at some point, especially now that I've gone through Lateralus, I think I'll appreciate it more 💯

Haven’t watched. But here we go, money on your gonna enjoy this
And the last comment , A TOOL song will hit you when you need it The undefined open thoughts of the songs do flow in and out and change over time Then it seems like one wasn’t your favorite , hits home hard Keep it up If you do “ NO Quarter please check out the Led Zeppelin version first. Not to compare but only prospective
They play the Salival version of Pushit at this concert:

Honestly how many times did you forget that you were listening to a live recording
Looking forward to that Zeppelin cover, No Quarter that I suggested over on your Instagram. Hope you get to it.
"Salival" is a live album
I am with you.. studio
