Thanks for NOT stopping the video every 2 seconds like every other person that has to try and break this down. Love your reactions and he is the GOAT on drums. Thank you.
Here’s the crazy part. It’s not even a SOLO. This is just a “regular” TOOL song that they play every night they’re on tour. This, also, isn’t even a difficult song to play for him. When asked, he has never once said “Pneuma” was even in the top 10 hardest to play. He’s on cruise control for this song. A nice “cool-down” after THE GRUDGE. 😂 Imagine playing this not just ONCE, but EVERY TIME the song is up…… Danny Carey is the GOAT.
And genuinely one of the nicest human beings out there. Man is in his 60s and still pulling off these musical journeys night after night. There's a great interview with him in his home studio, which is their creative space to this day. He's also got deep roots in jazz and other genres that influence many of the swing beats you hear in tracks like Pneuma.
A lot of people think he is one of the best drummers of all time, he picked up jazz fusion drumming for fun (which I think says a lot). Him using his arms and legs non stop, switching in and out of time signatures, and the speed which he can go at can be mind blowing. He is definitely one of the most technical and precise musicians out there. This was just one song too, he does this for hours at a time, my forearm would be cramping after the intro.
Pretty much solid like that straight through the set. They’re one of the best live band to see.. I would suggest them if someone only had one show to choose for any given year, despite the lofty ticket prices. Their soundstage is revolutionary and many other acts have copied it, as it’s optimized for great sound wherever you’re seated.
Lol you're right people do talk about Travis Barker, but anyone that knows anything about drumming wouldn't havr daney carey snd travis in the same hemisphere
It may have began with someone who played for Atlanta (?) also a massive T00L fan, knew where to leave a uniform of home colors, in his size, also knowing D loved him some NBA…grew from there.🤷♂️
After everything he does during that song, particularly the bridge, I absolutely adore the double cymbol choke after the bridge crescendo. I don’t know why it makes me so happy.
Danny isn’t just a drummer, he is a master tactician on the drums. I been playing drums for 48 yrs and it was a while since i was super impressed by a drummer but Danny blows me away. Danny is 1 of very few drummers who can keep multiple different times at the same time. Nearly impossible for many. He does it with ease.
One of the best drummers ever and the polyrhythms are insane. Definitely need to check out Chad Smiths (from Red Hot Chili Peppers) Drumeo reaction. Best improv drummer out there now.
What I love about This video is that without knowing much about drums you can feel amazed at what you are seeing, and if you study on it you will be even more amazed, because of the switching odd time signatures that he perfectly weaves his part through. Coming up with really nice drum fills for odd time signatures is something that most drummers will never even attempt.
Another great performance to react to is Mike Portnoy’s drumming with Dream Theater called “Instrumedley -Modern Drummer Festival 2003“ which is a collection of their best songs mashed together…his drumming will make you eyes fall out of your skull…🥁🔥🔥👍
Love some Danny Carey! Now you need to check out Neil Peart from Rush doing drum solo in Germany. It's an amazing journey. See where a lot of modern day drummers got their inspiration.
This song is played in such an odd time signature that it’s hard to follow, but it’s a great song to listen to…Dream Theater’s drummer, Mike Portnoy, was put on the spot by Drumeo team to see how fast Mike could listen and learn to play this song since he had never heard this song before…in a few hours and 2 run throughs, Mike played it start to finish while adding his own style to the song…The video is here in RUclips if you guys want to check it out….😎🥁🔥 great reaction video guys!!

Was never a fan of Tool, but have always heard about Danny from those who know drummers and how highly regarded he is. The double amazing part beyond the complexity of the patterns and all the different sounds is that on top of all that, every strike is at an intentional and exact velocity, like the middle rimshot/steel section "breathes" in waves of intensities, as does the cascading tonal triplets section. He doesn't just get excited and bang it out once the heavy bits come through. A bit more of a jazz drummer that happens to play rock/metal/progressive. Many of the drums are Mandala pads and play samples (live modified by 128 levels of pressure sensing, so they still get the "feels" and not just sound like a drum machine) from the big stack next to him that he loaded up the presets at the setup. That allows him to have more drum types (and some non-drum percussion like xylophone/marimba) without 20 trucks full of equipment or long resets between songs, and in some songs he's also filling what a keyboardist might do, with sticks. He built most of his soundbanks by playing the actual instrument and sampling it, like a sonic soul collector.

He is most literally elevating his entire mind to this ethereal space where he can navigate all of these parts at once. It takes A LOT of brain power, besides the obvious physical feat. Remember Danny Carey is like 51 years old in this video. GOAT!!
i hope one day soon tool releases a whole crapload of footage that fans didn't know about because they've always been against being recording while playing live. it's easy to listen to this song (and all of their other ones) without having any idea how insane what these musicians are doing. i really hope that they've been amassing a huge archive over the years of their performances because it would be such a shame if what they do live was lost when they stop performing.
