I'm a cop in memphis and we've had them for the past 3 years and their amazing tool for my job they're are definently better than the impala that preceded them and our chargers have the hemi so that is a bonus cause no one outruns us now. I personally hit 160 in mine while pursuing a 09 ss camaro which i caught up too and eventually pitted
Sure, it's faster than the Crown Vic, but I felt like smaking that guy in the face when he said the Charger looks better than "any old Crown Vic"... You honestly can't beat a Crown Vic.
Our city PD just got two of these, and holy hell. Not only the intimidation factor, but they are quick. This is a small town and to see not one, but two black and white Chargers in a long line of *surprise surprise* Crown Vics, an 'unmarked' 03ish Impala, and an 'unmarked' 03ish Explorer.
It is good to see Dodge back in the Cop car business. In the 1980s we had a fleet of 460 LTDs, but they did not perform well so we kept two of the 440 Magnum Labarons for highway interceptors. When the Chevy Caprice came out with the LT1 we retired the Labarons and LTDs.
@flynn1911 Have you driven any chargers on duty? Completely agree that visibility is low, (looking through the rear windshield anyway, its actually a hope for the best situation sometimes) because of the cage and other dash equipment (old radar) being so high. But the police package has a column shifter, not a floor shifter, theres tons of room through the middle, pretty easy to get in and out with a duty belt.. Unless thats with the 3.5 L?? Ive only been in the hemi cruiser.
Since 2006 The Dodge Charger has performed better all around than any thing other manufactures have offered, the 2006 Charger set the top speed record for a four door sedan that was set way back in 1969 with a 440 cu inch powered Dodge Polara which was 147 mph Now with the Challengers topping out 180 mph the top speed is whatever the manufacture want to set the ecu module. The new Ford with the twin turbos this year topped out at 148, and handled well it should be a good police vehicle also.
The Dodge Charger looks awesome! But in some countries you just wouldn't need it (not because of other good police cars but rather because of the streets, like for example in Norway)
The police in Australia use 300kw Commodores and the US Police are about to get the same car. Its the car that was sold as the G8 Pontiac but will now become the new Chevy Caprice.
If car tech doesn't improve, then yes, you're right. Not so. The Charger is not only has better performance than the Crown Vic but it is more fuel efficient overall. This is what is needed.
I am not a cop, but in my part of Michigan I am seeing less and less vics. The impala is very popular, and the charger is becoming common, the state police post down the road has a bunch of them.
Everyone's talking about the cars that this can't catch. The fact is it can catch most cars. More than enough. These Chargers scare the shit out of me, if you pass one are you are speeding you either need to pull over or floor it because you probably aren't getting away.
Now this is a beauty. Would be good to complement it with the Crown Vic though, to get the extra storage space and higher performance (compared to the Dodge's non-HWY Patrol units), while letting the HWY Patrol do the high-speed chases.
@wharghoul gotta admit u have a point there, more power more servicing. plus anymore power and the car would probably understeer even more and end up in a ditch on every corner
non american cars are known for being lighter but i still love american cars. and whenever anyone says that American cars are 'out of date' and use 'old technology' i just need to point to the zr1 haha
Down in my part of Florida, they roll mostly Crown Vics, and those Impalas. the Sheriff's Dept. purchased a few of the new Chargers a couple years ago for highway pursuit. One of the officers must have gotten in over his head though with all that horsepower, because he later creamed himself, and his car, driving one of the prized Chargers.
The 09's are even nicer. And that new deepwater blue pearl coat paint its the cat's meow. That new blue is so beautiful makes you want to have one you'll drool seeing one. I checked the Dodge website and Dodge says the localest dealer got a SRT8 in deepwater blue loaded. Crying take me take me. And no dealer got one for 100's of miles. $41120 for the SRT8 with 6.1 SRT hemi and 5 speed auto and 20". Better than this 07 5.7 liter. Thank god its a free country and we all can drive what we want 2
@DJK290 mmm, yea but see heres the problem... a lot of people in some cases(and especially in cases street and high way canon ball run racing) people carry invalid license plates or two sided license plate holders were you can just flip the holder to the other side revealing the valid or not valid side. I know my dade was hit once and PD couldn't find the guy because the license plate was invalid.
I agree....it'd be be nice if the Crown Vic could have the same engine as the Mercury Marauder...and have the same suspension design as the mid 90's Chevy Caprice...every other part of CV is fine...
@Flush004 Very true, that's why you have to have a car that can outrun them by a longshot, the goal is to get away fast and not drag it out, giving them a chance to call for backup. If that were your goal anyways. I've seen and heard of many people getting away from police chasing them, gotta know the area.
Also, I'd like to point out that in a chase HANDLING of the car is another factor in order to manuever aroud the cars as well as to keep CONTROL of the car at higher speeds. This is something the Europeans prioritize. I think the Charger has better handling than the CrownVic.
I've drove both the Crown Vic interceptor and the dodge charger, gotta say the vic is just all round better though I have heard that the new charger versions have worked out the breaking problems which would make it a great vehicle, wouldn't be above driving it again
so this car is good enough. it still looks bad ass, i've seen them with blacked out cruisers that look civilian till they are in your rear view and they turn on the lights
one big problem with the charger is that you cant's see out of it from the driver's seat with a camera and radar antenna mounted inside the class. Crown Vic is my preferred vehicle. We got a charger to see how we would like it but ended up giving it to the school resource officer and buying more vics.
You might need to look at those cars again because it is a matter of technological innovation. Just look at the Dodge Viper which produces 500hp in a 8L engine compared to a Bugatti Veyron with 1000hp in the same size. The idea is to put more hp in a smaller space in order for you to go faster.
@clanaef The Crown Vic had serious issues with the gas tank exploding while being rear ended. lots of dead, and badly burned people, Despite all the fixes, it still had issues for many years.....................Do you want that kind of protection? I would suppose not.
Personally I only have experience driving a Crown Vic, but the Charger seems okay. The locals cops around here do complain they won't stop or turn around though. I'd still stick with the Crown Vic since it is built like a truck. I'd love to meet the cop who runs head long at a curb in a Charger. Besides, I like the Crown Vic's giant trunk. Never know when you need to hide some bodies right?
Cop cars don't run on F1 circuits. They typically cruise the freeways or prowl around cities looking for law-breakers. A huge part of their job is going to locations of criminal activity. Chasing down a Ferrari is a rare occurrence indeed, and they're really going to lose a one-on-one chase, and the same could probably be said if they put lights on a Countach. That's what the helicopters and *multiple* cars are for. Besides, the Dodge is scary enough to get most sane men to pull over anyway.
faster than anything is their Motorola radio.. They can call in backup and setup a roadblock with spike strips..and make it look like they have given up chasing you.
If you can't get away from something that takes 0-60 in over 6 seconds your driving the wrong stuff. Not to mention these things have a high moment center.
How old are you? I don't have any preference to Japanese vs American cars. I was merely stating that 340hp is not a lot of hp from an engine of that size.
I've seen alot of charger cop cars with bored out motors and nitrous kits also. But that might just be where I live. There seems to be alot of super cars on the road also so that might be why.
try keepin up with my 07 aston martin v8 vantage black on black, blacked out rear lights, 20inch Donz Bruno, flowmaster exhaust system #15371,K&N Typhoon cold air intake, and clifford alarm system :)
TanaT10 Your blacked out lights and fancy alarm system will really help you outrun a system of radios and stop sticks right? Not to mention the difference in driving skills between law enforcement and a civilian in a fancy car ;)
Well here in australia we've got the Ford Falcon XR8 and Holden Commodore VE SS for highway patrol + some XR6 Turbo versions and 6 cyl versions for the noob cops. Not sure how they compare to the charger but they're pretty damn fast.
Where did you get the "2.5" figure? Then, what makes the Crownvic better in pit manuevering? If the Crownvic is going to be kept "forever", then at least the engine should be smaller with more hp so it'll accelerate and handle better. The backdoors are also 3x too small? Then, how can the Europeans fit in those small hatchbacks? The Charger is a Mercedes E-Class.
From what I've heard these chargers arnt as great as they seem. I have an uncle whose a cop and he hates them, the v8 is powerful but the car is cheaply made, the stearing wheel is falling apart, plastic pieces in the interior are already breaking, the v8 is powerful but without AWD it gets stuck very easily in the snow, and the smaller trunk means you cant put weight in the back, better then that tiny ford interceptor though, gonna miss those crown vics :(
Well....Germany has a one-off from Mercedes tuner Brabus called the Rocket and their fleet has for tens of years included fast Porsches. Same thing applies to Nederlands and Austria. France has Subaru STI's and the UK has EVO's. Still most police cars in all european countries are normal four door cars just as in the US.
Actually the Fords have a class action law suit against them because of safety concerns. The PAL is representing cops against Ford due to Fires after slights impacts. I know, I am a cop. Get your facts straight.
Its true the G8 Gt is faster, but it is also $6,000 more expensive (The normal G8 sedan is only $3,000 more but comes with the3.6l V6) If they were only buying one car the $6000 would be well spent, but if they are buying 8 or 10 cars, they would be able to afford 2 additional cars (or spend the money elsewhere) if they chose the charger.
i bet you 10 years from now, people will still slow down when they see a crown vic thinking its a cop
Andd you were right😂‼
Thats a perk of owning one
You can't be wrong at all
Literally the same man!!
Over a decade later and your still right
I've seen this car do 130 on the shoulder like it was nothing.
I'm a cop in memphis and we've had them for the past 3 years and their amazing tool for my job they're are definently better than the impala that preceded them and our chargers have the hemi so that is a bonus cause no one outruns us now. Sure, it's faster than the Crown Vic, but I felt like smaking that guy in the face when he said the Charger looks better than "any old Crown Vic"...
You honestly can't beat a Crown Vic.
3:17 - "With a nice working service for interrogation and persu..." SLAAAAM dat head against the car
Our city PD just got two of these, and holy hell. Not only the intimidation factor, but they are quick. This is a small town and to see not one, but two black and white Chargers in a long line of *surprise surprise* Crown Vics, an 'unmarked' 03ish Impala, and an 'unmarked' 03ish Explorer.
it would be so awesome if they started making the 1968-1970 again but with better steering and with more tech inside
Australia has had the Holden SS V8 and the Ford XR8 Falcon for years, and this just reaches that mark
This is the most sexiest cop car this model year and everything
@flynn1911 Have you driven any chargers on duty? Completely agree that visibility is low, (looking through the rear windshield anyway, its actually a hope for the best situation sometimes) because of the cage and other dash equipment (old radar) being so high. Awesome bootleg maneuver at 08sec!!!! How do you know when to go from reverse to fwd without messin it up?
I should point out that what you need in the city is handling and in the highway is acceleration. That's what it really should be.
Ford is not giving up without a fight. This year ford comin out with the new Taurus for police n it look amazing.
The Dodge Charger looks awesome! But in some countries you just wouldn't need it (not because of other good police cars but rather because of the streets, like for example in Norway)

@SchnellStell Try the Numberplate Switch thingy,
It would be nice to adopt the Volvo but how much does it cost?
If car tech doesn't improve, then yes, you're right. Not so. The Charger is not only has better performance than the Crown Vic but it is more fuel efficient overall. This is what is needed.
in Mexico thats what the highway patrol uses..Federal De Caminos ..Dodge chargers all over Mexico!! Love this car
I am not a cop, but in my part of Michigan I am seeing less and less vics. The impala is very popular, and the charger is becoming common, the state police post down the road has a bunch of them.
Finally alittle more challenge but still 0-60 in 6.1 thats kinda slow. How fast is the v6 gonna be?
I like Crown Vics too. But you have to face it, man. It's a damn Charger! Okay? As a squad car, this things a menace. Show respect where it's due.
how many gallardos do u see on patrol where u live?
The "out of service" decal is because it's a demo car, not an actual patrol unit owned by an agency.
I already love the Charger, the police package makes it pretty close to the institution called the Crown Vic.
uhh....the one thats going to be discontinued?
Everyone's talking about the cars that this can't catch. The fact is it can catch most cars. More than enough. These Chargers scare the shit out of me, if you pass one are you are speeding you either need to pull over or floor it because you probably aren't getting away.
@chickenttt there is a skyline r34 in japan, just thought i would pass that on...
Now this is a beauty. Would be good to complement it with the Crown Vic though, to get the extra storage space and higher performance (compared to the Dodge's non-HWY Patrol units), while letting the HWY Patrol do the high-speed chases.
DONT FORGET BACK IN THE 80'S WE USED FORD MUSTANGS, CAMAROS, AND ALSO THE CAPRICES
Great video/Review. I am actually picking my 08 Charger up tommorow well in a about 7 hours. I can't wait. It's the 3.5L V6 in White...
-Joe
Badass Charger aside, I dig this video for Barstow's narration. That guy needs a job on one of the car review shows like Motorweek.
i agree completely. as a matter of fact, i even like the column mounted shifter. i hope i can find one of these one day for a good price lol
i agree the rapid response wrx could kick the shit out of the charger but you gotta agree that car looks niiiiccceee
You couldn’t make a video like this today 😂
It doesnt matter if a cop can keep up with you or not. No matter how fast your car is it will never be as fast as a radio.
Is it worth giving up 90 horses?
Down in my part of Florida, they roll mostly Crown Vics, and those Impalas. the Sheriff's Dept. purchased a few of the new Chargers a couple years ago for highway pursuit.

so this car is good enough. it still looks bad ass, i've seen them with blacked out cruisers that look civilian till they are in your rear view and they turn on the lights
I love how he slams the dudes head into the car
I'm a big fan of the chargers/300s they're nice cars. my dad drives a 300 SRT8 with the 6.1L hemi
the beginning was nice
If they've got you in cuffs, it's not for selling Girl Scout cookies.
one big problem with the charger is that you cant's see out of it from the driver's seat with a camera and radar antenna mounted inside the class. Crown Vic is my preferred vehicle. We got a charger to see how we would like it but ended up giving it to the school resource officer and buying more vics.
really hope they can put manual trans into charger and improve steel wheel quality
so what is a car thats about the same price that is the size of a police car that is fast enough for you?

@Postobon333 Yea. This video is a preview of the new model, it is not in police service yet in the video.
I like the nice feture, slamming innocent drivers directly to the roof of the car .illuminati
faster than anything is their Motorola radio..
They can call in backup and setup a roadblock with spike strips..and make it look like they have given up chasing you.
very true for an engine of that size it should have more horsepower and a car with that weight

im getting the 07 police charger in a few weeks, the thing hauled asss

The EVO is All wheel drive, not 4WD. Yes there is a difference look it up.
try keepin up with my 07 aston martin v8 vantage black on black, blacked out rear lights, 20inch Donz Bruno, flowmaster exhaust system #15371,K&N Typhoon cold air intake, and clifford alarm system :)

@mward5291 Mitsubishi and Mercedes also manage about 30 miles between breakdowns.
Truly, staggering triumphs of engineering.
Nice reverse 180!!!
I bet even a 2011 mustang coupe would out drive this.
HOLY SHIT the dude at 3:21 got his bell rung on the trunk lid.
Well here in australia we've got the Ford Falcon XR8 and Holden Commodore VE SS for highway patrol + some XR6 Turbo versions and 6 cyl versions for the noob cops. Not sure how they compare to the charger but they're pretty damn fast.
the charger has great kick to it, however when you put in a silent patrolman there are so many blind spots.

The New Crown Vic next year will quick that shit out of this.
150mph OUCH!!! Gone are the days of dusting crown vics.
Last thousand years? Who wrote the script?
Willimantic, CT went and wrecked thiers before they could get the police decals onto it...
Needless to say, it was replaced with a slower 'Vic.
quickest 4 door police car made my ass, in australia we use ss commodores with a 6.0l v8 that produces near 400hp
Wow i did not know crown vic have been around for a thousand years hell for that matter i did not know there were any cars over 120 years old!
The Vic is staying for at least another year. They are putting the Mustang V-8 in the 09 model.
@LordThoriner Some american cops have purchased Challenger SRT8's for the high-speed highway work.
Actually the Fords have a class action law suit against them because of safety concerns. The PAL is representing cops against Ford due to Fires after slights impacts. I know, I am a cop. Get your facts straight.
LOL Boulder City,NV had 4 of these. Thought they were hot shit when they got it.
340hp. Damn. The uh 2010 model puts out 390 and 400 with a muffler delete cuz those things are massive. And it will sound like it does on my page.
@flynn1911 I 100% agree, pity the Vic will be discontinued soon.
what i got out of this is that the highway patrol will have the better one now i no who to look for :)
I agree ben Crown Victoria is what police need.
you can actually do drift tests in a police car? COOL!
I WANT THAT CAR!
Probaly the Quickest four door police car ever Build ? Maybe in the US
THAT is the reason why i'm Highway Patrol
"...with a nice working surface for interrogation.." *THUMP* LOL
Its true the G8 Gt is faster, but it is also $6,000 more expensive (The normal G8 sedan is only $3,000 more but comes with the3.6l V6)
