@avx7 Fair enough but Holden did make the car first. The plant/factory that makes the commodore is in Australia. The g8 grill was built their too. The only thing put on it in the usa is the pontiac badge. when pontiac closed, holden released a limited edition commodore that had the left over g8 grills to get rid of them. No matter how to look at it Pontiac is shit, my wife drives a 09 R/T and we have not had a single problem our neighbor has the g8 and it's in the shop more than the garage.
the vxr8 is actually based on hsv clubsport r8 which is a model of the australian made holden commodore the pontiac g8 is based on the holden commodore ss, the hsv clubsport is the higher perfomance version of the ss.
It's a holden commodore which is very well alive in Australia where the car was engineered and produced. The only thing pontiac about the car is the badges
I can't feel too sorry for them. They had years to get it right, and besides the Firebird / Trans Am the best they could do was rebadge Australian cars?? The "GTO" and "G8" were the best modern Pontiacs ironically because of the fact that they weren't real from scratch productions of the Pontiac brand.
G8 is a better and faster luxury sports sedan the dodge chargers are so ugly before 2011 and GM has a record of having more dependable motors that's why the Chevy SS has the same 6.2L motor.
Under I agree with you but I wish that Chevrolet would keep the pricing the same on the SS like it was for the G8. 45k vs. 30k is a big difference and I do not see many Chevy SS cars on the road and I think that is the reason why.
+Hemi TX850 I believe it's the 3 and 3.2 motors from Chrysler that got recalled at some point I forgot I think those were it though from the early 2000s
Under recalls happen all the time with any car manufacture its just GM happens to have a lot of engine problems where as chrysler has more transmission problems and ford im not sure what there problems are but everyone has recalls.
I had my G8 for almost 5 yrs and not major problem.... I am very happy with my car. And that new 2014 Chevy SS has litterally the same components as my G8
Pretty amazing considering the car came out in 2006 and the platform was first shown with a concept in 2004. If you get a chance, sit in a SS. Holden really upgraded the interior and its a world beater. Not to mention the SS gets MRC with 2015 model year. MRC is only on our top of the range, LSA powered GTS trim.
Dave's Garage magazines typically do a 1 ft rollout before the clocks start. almost all cars lose .3+ by doing so. plus elevation, temps, track prep. Yeah, it's slow, but makes sense.
Not stock it didn’t do those times. Sorry but there are dozens of tests in these cars and no one was close to the numbers you claim lmfao. Your times are exactly what the 2017 charger Daytona ran. Nice try but you’re full of it buddy lmao. No 2006 charger ran with a 2017 Daytona stock.
I'd like to correct you on one point, The 1998 VT Commodore was not built on the Sigma platform, but it was based on GM's V platform, which was developed by Opel in Germany. I do agree however, that the CTS-V is a very good car,
From what I have read that would be because Holden did not call it the Sigma. It looks like Holden developed the Global Rear Wheel Drive, (GRWD) prior to 1998 but dropped it. It looks like Cadillac picked the up Holden developed GWRD and debuted it as the Sigma on the CTS in 2002.
@79HZGTS It was launched in the UK before North America. the GTO was a copy of the Vauxhall Monaro, and that was a copy of the Holden Monaro. they are all GM.
yeah i know up until i found out that we were shipping holdens i dident know we actually were but in Europe they were badgeing as vauxhall and in america it was badged as a ponti
i just took a r/t yesterday from a roll and from a dig..as sick as they look where is there get up an go to back it up..now to find a srt8 to play with
@Vladmir917 It does! just not with Pontiac badges. It goes to the Middle east as a Chevy Lumina, to England as a Vauxhall VXR8, and of course in its native form, the VE Holden Commodore in Australia
I don't mind if the Pontiac G8 is a Aussie underneath. It just goes to show for sport sedans we both have similar tastes! A big engine up front, power goes to the REAR, a excellent automatic and manual, and HANDLES!
@avx7 fair enough but just to let you know, the commodore AND the g8 modified body parts are built in an Aussie plant. You say holden doesnt exist in your country but I would like to point out we have given u a lot of our cars. The Pontiac GTO is a Holden Monaro (Again, Monaro was around long before it was exported), the new Camaro was designed by holden and built of the commodore's platform (also designed by holden). The new cop cars (replacing crown vic.) is a Holden Statesman.
Base level Charger (SXT, as you mentioned) is also a V6.... we're talking about a GT version, which had a V8. The standard R/T was really more a V8 family car.... the Daytona package would mirror the G8 GT.
I haven't read a single comment but let me go ahead and apologize for my fellow Australians parochial hate for re badging. The G8/Commodore is a stupendous car. Mine makes me smile every day. But my hat goes off to the dodge as well. These big V8 muscle machines are living their last days and I'm sure I'll get misty eyed over either one when trying to explain them to kids in twenty years.
@Konformation07 the commodore SV6 (the v6 engine sports model...incase u didnt notice the name) is quite popular in australia. One thing about the Commodore is unlike the g8, it also has family models (Omega and berlina - both v6) and luxury models (Calais and Calais V - calais has a v6 and the V has a v8) to go with the sports models (SV6, SS, SS-V, SS-V Redline - all v8's except for the sv6). The commodore sv6 sold more because it's v6 was better than the omega and berlina v6 so it sold more.
If i'm correct the new z06 proved to be track approved by the germans. And teh zr1 proved to be a track monster. It placed like 15th in the top 50 for track cars driven on the topgear track.
Yeah, I seen it on motortrend and it has a great looking interior. I just wish they would if make it look like the Holden HSV W427 on the exterior. Look it up that car is BADD!!!
@sambo92 your an srt8 picking on gts nice you guys never pick on someone your size but my g8 ain't stock either so fuck around and find out and I'd still out corner you stock don't forget that
The two best cars I've ever had are the 2008 mercedes C350 and the 2009 Pontiac G8. The Benz handles better than the G8 on turns but the overall quality and power of the G8 is hard to resist. Looks wise they are both similar, not overly muscly looking but you can tell it's athletic.
Even though it was made by the GM Australian division, that car was making quite a good profit in the U.S. when it was shipped and sold here. It's a damn shame it was discontinued.
I would like to congratulate you on where you are right, the G8 is a Commodore with a different bumpers and power train options. "...nothing America can produce could ever come close. " The first generation Cadillac CTS is based on the '98 Holden developed Sigma platform, but all Sigma based cars are built in Lansing, Michigan. The 2009 CTS-V is built on the Sigma II platform which was designed and made in America. Currently the CTS-V holds the production sedan Nurburgring record at 7:59.32.
I have to send a shout out on this one. I'm a charger fan and I have to say, the 2010 charger is gonna throw some serious slack on your decision here. Chrystler is currently testing a new Pheonix engine line that, according to current tests, will give the SRT-8 model a 6.4L V8 HEMI that'll crank out between 440 and 470 hp at peak. Obviously, this isn't set in stone yet, but I hope my favorite car in the world comes out in the end. Long Live American Muscle.
I personally like both cars. The Charger has been around for a few years now and that's starting to become apparent. Although the G8 isn't technically new (Holden and Vauxhall have sold it for years), it's new to us in North America, so that adds to the appeal. I'm not sure where they got their prices though because where I live a Charger is much cheaper than a G8, not to mention you have 4 engines to choose from while the G8 only offers 2.
i see what ur saying lol. You can always get a sts turbo kit for it, and these motors have been tuned in the CTS in the past so tunning and making more power shouldnt be a problem.
Actually it was. The guy in the video said both of them were "all American", which is kind of a weird statement when he admits just a little bit later that the Dodge has Mercedes-style engineering.
@phantomTomcat1985 Nope, Holden Commodore has been around for decades. Yes both pontiac and holden are gm but the commodore is built in australia with aussie parts (excluding engine and audio). And its actually an SS-V. SS has a different audio player system (not as luxurious as ss-v).
@DJLOC1991 That wouldn't be a fair comparison. The G8GT is priced nearest the R/T.To make it fair the question you should be asking is the G8 GXP vs the Charger SRT8 both around $40K brand new. Heres the stats: GXP has 415bhp while the SRT8 has 425.Despite the extra power the GXP has a quicker 0-60 of 4.7secs while the SRT8 has just over 5. Top speed of SRT8 is 165mph while the GXP is limited to 155mph but rumored to be able to hit 176mph. Crucially though, the G8 can take corners!
The G8 is due to return to America under a new badge in 2013; The Chevrolet Lumina and El Camino pickup. If you want some idea of what it will look like, look up the Saudi Arabian Chevrolet Lumina. Remember that the G8, Middle Eastern Lumina and Commodore were all designed, built and exported from Australia by GM Holden
tiny correction, the dealer in Surrey sold 12, the total UK sales of the Vxr8 in 2007 was 261 cars sold... thats not a good sales number, which means the car will get dropped from the program sooner or later becaues like i said before, noone is buying those things
These are all things that I did not know, thank you for the information. You see I am American. I am happy to see that GM is smart enough to let Holden be it's own entity. I am glad to know that GM is smart enough to take advantage of Holden's racing experience. I do get frustrated that Americans try to label the Commodore platform based G8, and Camaro as all American. Give credit where it is due, that is what I always say. Holden has outdone itself with this platform.
@Drjoesummers no, this is perfectly comparable. the top line models are the srt8 and the gxp. The second to top are the rt and gt, which are compared here
@hiace24 hi person from korea. just want to tell you that holden and daewoo made a deal on that. when we get your barina, epica, captiva and once the viva. you get the (pontiac g8) which is a hsv r8 fro australia badged under daewoo then you get the statesman and caprice. we once imported you cruze, but we have changed it now for our country,
the GXP owns the SRT8, same hp, 200 lbs lighter, not to mention the closely geared 6 speed vs the chargers 5 speed. Not to mention the much cheaper price tag and better handling
I would have to say it's not that they can't, it's simply that they don't want to. Take a look at the dyno charts for that engine and you'll see why. Take note of the very wide and flat torque curve. It's strong at any RPM, and it doesn't much care what gear its in. This also allows highway cruising barely above idle speed, allowing it to match or exceed the fuel economy of many smaller engines that have to work much harder to achieve the same. In real life driving, its also more enjoyable.
VE was the first locally designed platform so no its a 100% developed Australian car with a unique chassis, though the platform will be adopted by Cadillac in 2010.
The one thing that they failed to mention in this video is that the G8 is 6 inches shorter and 3 inches narrower than the charger. And it weighs about 600 lbs less than the charger. Weight makes a big difference, if you put them at the same weight I think they would be the same car. I have driven them and I think they are very evenly matched. Charger feels more solid and more secure if you were to get into an accident.
@almostboards117 The architecture of zeta chassis was engineered and developed in Australia. Yes of course some funding may have come from GM but the it is ultimately an Australian design.
they didnt change the pannels, they r different cars the pontiac g8 is basicly a holden commodre ss and the vxr8 is a HSV (holden speacial vechiles) clubsport r8, the clubsport is justed a higher tuned version of the ss
@masterjedi89 i know that the engine and gearbox are from the US, but the rest of the car is of Australian design. it IS an australian car not an American car, just because Holden is a Subsidiary of GM doesnt make it an Amerian car
I love my g8 :) she'll be getting a new cam this winter (and maybe a blower too if everything works out)... then we dont have to worry about comparing it to anything with 4 (or even 2) doors!
@MrJamesonStyles haha yeah and now Holden have released the Series 2 VE Commodore (what the G8's were based on) with improved interior, touch screen built in Hard Drive, updated front end
Is the GXP video on here on youtube and will they show it's performance and can it burnout better than the SRT-8 because I would love to see it happen.
if they're both simply 4 door versions of the new challenger, and '06 gto, does that mean the failed gto is already better than the yet to be released mopar?
@TisiphonesShadow You are correct, I have an old GTP in the driveway and it's 3.8 supercharged V-6 is no match for a 6.1 Hemi nor should it be. Neither in power, nor gas mileage or insurance and certainly not in monthly payment. ; )
@avx7 Just looked at vuaxhall's website. the vxr8 isnt even up to date with HSV. The vxr8 is a HSV E-SERIES 1.......HSV are up to E-SERIES 3!!! So it is clear vuaxhall are importing the gts and are taking the old model while its still in stock (E series 2 came only half a year before 3). Pontiac imported the g8 a couple of years AFTER that model commodore was released. Holden have continued making THEIR car and have already released a new model.
@avx7 also, u may like to know that holden are going to export the commodore again but it wil be sold as a chevy. Like the g8, there will be a different grill. New grill will be a smaller version of the camaro and yes, it will be the new model commodore (the VE Series 2. g8 was just VE and GTO was either a VY or VZ monaro). I suggest u check out hsv.com.au because you'll love the E3 ;) Nice talking to ya.

Too bad Pontiac is dead
It's a holden commodore which is very well alive in Australia where the car was engineered and produced. The only thing pontiac about the car is the badges
Yes we all know this 😑
Travis Wigal it's still in the USA. Look up Chevrolet SS
Dead but never forgotten
Still driving and loving my 09 G8GT, 143kmiles in the NE Rustbelt, no less.
+wildstar43 well the average person dont really know what kind of car it is. they most likely see it as another sedan. Chevy kinda just ruined the car
+Under i agreed with you untill you said gm has more dependable motors. my camaro ss just took a shit and it was only 4 years old.
It literally is a new G8. G8 was a 2006 Holden Commodore, SS is a 2013
I love my car still. No problems to this day, not one
6.1 secs? 14.1 secs? Was my grandma driving?
Dave's Garage magazines typically do a 1 ft rollout before the clocks start. almost all cars lose .3+ by doing so. plus elevation, temps, track prep. Yeah, it's slow, but makes sense.
was 6.0 for ss auto in Australia .manual 5.7 to 100km 2006 - 2010
They are also using the excess parts designed for the G8s (front end etc) in these new models that have recently come out.
The only problem is the Charger still stands while th G8 blew away with the south Aussie dust storms.
@tmmurphy correction... the Daytona R/T (equivilent to the GT trim level, as the R/T is equivilent to the base G8).
6.2 sec to 60 in the charger? My '06 does it in 5.1, and the quarter at 13.7 @104. Edmunds cant drive haha.
I do agree however, that the CTS-V is a very good car,
Slowpar - HA ha!

:-P
+LOLKINGBABY as a mopar fan that is awesome.
That ' doesn't belong there.
@79HZGTS It was launched in the UK before North America. the GTO was a copy of the Vauxhall Monaro, and that was a copy of the Holden Monaro. they are all GM.
Still have mine 8 years of ownership and love this car
yeah i know up until i found out that we were shipping holdens i dident know we actually were but in Europe they were badgeing as vauxhall and in america it was badged as a ponti
I really hope they do. I own a Pontiac G8 and my last three cars for the past 15 years have been Pontiac. A good car, never had any problems.
i just took a r/t yesterday from a roll and from a dig..as sick as they look where is there get up an go to back it up..now to find a srt8 to play with
@Vladmir917 It does! just not with Pontiac badges. It goes to the Middle east as a Chevy Lumina, to England as a Vauxhall VXR8, and of course in its native form, the VE Holden Commodore in Australia
I think both cars are awesome. I have an 07 R/T Road and Track and its 0-60 5.7 on the cars timer.
@79HZGTS --and has a corvette 415hp LS-3 engine from the GM parts bin, & assembled in australia
Also in 09 the 5.7 got a bump so it made more power than the 6.0 so I can see they tried to favor the g8 here.
It made more power but it was still slower and i have raced them
@@USDM_Jesus I have too. G8s are very slow.
@sambo92 your an srt8 picking on gts nice you guys never pick on someone your size but my g8 ain't stock either so fuck around and find out and I'd still out corner you stock don't forget that
@@USDM_Jesus excuses. I've gapped Chevy ss and Camaros as well. Alot of stuff that's above my class, nice try.
@@sambo92lmao u ain’t gapped shit in that BOAT
The two best cars I've ever had are the 2008 mercedes C350 and the 2009 Pontiac G8. The Benz handles better than the G8 on turns but the overall quality and power of the G8 is hard to resist. Looks wise they are both similar, not overly muscly looking but you can tell it's athletic.
Dee Hop is a 08 g8 any different
@@roxasbuddy yes the 08 G8 has slightly more power than the 09.
The first generation Cadillac CTS is based on the '98 Holden developed Sigma platform, but all Sigma based cars are built in Lansing, Michigan.
Heres the stats:
GXP has 415bhp while the SRT8 has 425.Despite the extra power the GXP has a quicker 0-60 of 4.7secs while the SRT8 has just over 5. Top speed of SRT8 is 165mph while the GXP is limited to 155mph but rumored to be able to hit 176mph.
Crucially though, the G8 can take corners!
I have been on the track and I have seen the Charger spank the G8 several times. I wonder what testing they have been doing?
The G8 is due to return to America under a new badge in 2013; The Chevrolet Lumina and El Camino pickup. If you want some idea of what it will look like, look up the Saudi Arabian Chevrolet Lumina. Remember that the G8, Middle Eastern Lumina and Commodore were all designed, built and exported from Australia by GM Holden
tiny correction, the dealer in Surrey sold 12, the total UK sales of the Vxr8 in 2007 was 261 cars sold...
thats not a good sales number, which means the car will get dropped from the program sooner or later becaues like i said before,
noone is buying those things
@KR850 Yeah thats why Holden were selling Commodore SS with a G8 pack option, to give Aussies the G8 look
The second to top are the rt and gt, which are compared here
have to love the LS motor
@hiace24 hi person from korea. just want to tell you that holden and daewoo made a deal on that. when we get your barina, epica, captiva and once the viva. you get the (pontiac g8) which is a hsv r8 fro australia badged under daewoo then you get the statesman and caprice. we once imported you cruze, but we have changed it now for our country,
the GXP owns the SRT8, same hp, 200 lbs lighter, not to mention the closely geared 6 speed vs the chargers 5 speed. Not to mention the much cheaper price tag and better handling
haha... the holden badge is sick, but I don't like how it sits in the open grill on the front end.
@scarblade234 I believe the engines can run on Ethanol here but the V6 does not have SIDI.
Nah mate the old Commodores were Vauxhal/Opel based but this one the "VE" is a locally designed platform not GM designed.
@dpgsoldier You're going to see the Holden Caprice soon with Chevy badges as a police cruiser
VE was the first locally designed platform so no its a 100% developed Australian car with a unique chassis, though the platform will be adopted by Cadillac in 2010.
@Konformation07 All V6 engines in commodores have SIDI and all engines including V8's can run on bio ethanol.
@insidelinevideo you do know the g8 isn't all american nor is it detroit. It is built in australia. And is completly australian.
@masterjedi89 i know that the engine and gearbox are from the US, but the rest of the car is of Australian design. it IS an australian car not an American car, just because Holden is a Subsidiary of GM doesnt make it an Amerian car
@MrJamesonStyles I agree, i was sad to see Pontiac go.
I love my g8 :) she'll be getting a new cam this winter (and maybe a blower too if everything works out)... then we dont have to worry about comparing it to anything with 4 (or even 2) doors!
@MrJamesonStyles
haha yeah and now Holden have released the Series 2 VE Commodore (what the G8's were based on) with improved interior, touch screen built in Hard Drive, updated front end
Neither in power, nor gas mileage or insurance and certainly not in monthly payment. ; )
@markpetersonii You could always just use the HSV grille, which simply has a vertical bar down the middle of it, and no badges
@thc3636 yeah mate, if there is a G8 parked in your garag then you do have a Commodore, albeit a rebadged one...hate to break it to ya...
I suggest u check out hsv.com.au because you'll love the E3 ;)
Nice talking to ya.
@phantomTomcat1985 built in aus DECADES before we exported it. HOLDEN approached gm about exporting it. GM simply said yes.
