tarja turunen belongs to the world of gothic music !!! thank god now he returned home !!! the gothic discs of him alone are works of art !!! nightwish is a wonderful romantic symphonic power metal band and floor is an excellent singer, just for the nightwish style, but our goddess of darkness, Tarja, gave today's music classes in lyrical and operatic singing !!!

Thank you for your opening comments....I have been banging my head against a wall trying to get peeps to understand that Nightwish has three era's and all their singers brought what was needed when needed. Tarja launched Nightwish. Annette helped the band get over the hurt and depressions of letting Tarja go (yes they did it in a chitty way but you can't change the past so get over it) and Floor saved Nightwish but at the same time Nightwish saved Floor as she was just coming off of burnout. All three singers where were they needed to be when they needed to be. Nightwish is not a female singer Nightwish is an amazing BAND. Take each singer's contributions for what they are - sit back, put on your headphones (as we don't line up speakers in this day and age) and enjoy the ride. BTW I wish all a Happy Holiday season.

That's what it is with Nightwish - if someone listens to this band for the first time, it's usually "Ghost Love Score" - viewers' recommendations and so on. Ok, most of the time it's the Wacken version and the reactors are delighted - no wonder. Then Gabriel - Gabriel appears in the comments on the reaction, a great respect for you! Gabriel briefly summarizes the history of the band and recommends more songs worth listening to - "Romanticide" is one of the first and rightly so, because while GLS from Floor shows the versatility of the singer, the band's artistry and makes the audience interested and want more, "Romanticide" makes that they fall in love with the team and there is no rescue for them. It works flawlessly! - each subsequent song turns out to be different, but equally fascinating.
We are going a different path and well, because we already know the band well and we don't need to have any special incentives to attract our attention. You said a very important thing - there is no point in arguing which of the female singers is better - each of them brings us something different and this song is special because we have it in Tarja, Anette and Floor versions. Tarja was the first I heard - I was carried away - Emppu's guitar sounds as if He was playing just for me - great! But this version is not perfect for me - Tarja doesn't have good vocal support from Marco and Marco doesn't have Tarja's support - this - knowing the later versions - is a big minus for me. But Emppu - damn amazing!
And here comes Anette - it's a very valuable movie you chose, because it shows something very rare - a band in rehearsal, casual, T-shirts and jeans, zero tension - we don't see such moments often - it's really cool! Anette - there are songs in which I love her, and some in which I only like her very much - this is one of those in which I like her very much. Well - the competition was very strong - Tarja and Floor - didn't beat either Tarja or Floor, but she is still on the podium - not only because there are only three, but because you can see that she really feels the song, it's not like that spectacular like Floor and Tarja, but sings with heart - you can see it, hear it and give it back to her!
And here we come to Wacken - you're right - it's a great evening, everyone is in great shape - they are giving a great, legendary concert! Floor decides to sing very much like Tarja - the resemblance really hits, but what happens is what I missed in Tarja's version - how much Marco's vocals bring - it was already heard in the version with Anette, but not that well - here Floor has great Marco's support, and Marco's great support for Floor, together they sound great, and in the last part it's even hard to tell if Marco is equal to Floor or Floor is equal to Marco! Anyway, the effect is great and this performance has become for me the one that I often come back to with real pleasure!
One song - so many different impressions - there is nothing to argue about which version is better - each one moves, none disappoints!

I agree with you, that Wacken version is absolutely amazing ❤️.
Both Floor and Marco were in their best, they enjoyed the song and the rest of the band were in their best, the audience was fantastic also!!
So i saw the Annete's version in lives and she was very good with this song, she enjoyed the performance as only Annete can do, she danced always. More light version but beautiful also,it was perfect video this who Quylain chosen, free from the audience, simple outfits and a good friendship between the members. Happy days 💗.
Studio album version is great now for me, mutch with the rest of the album and i like more than before.
But we have not a live from her to have a more complete opinion.
So we agree,i told before that this is the song who like me more with Floor's version.
Maybe Floor gave in this song a dynamic who the song had.
I agree also that Marko and Floor helping each other in the Wacken so equal who made the song ...a masterpiece.

Emppu shines and delivers on point. Valuable band player supporting the cast as always. Amazing show the band is hitting on all cylinders. Marco and Floor exchanging their moments in aggressive stances. The band pursuing the Muse with no ceiling up!! The band in full on beast mode. Keeping us on the edge!!

I like the studio version but the energy is missing. We do not have a song live with Tarja. We will never know. The Wacken. Hey boy!! Awe! Jukka pounding on the drums like there is no tomorrow. Everyone shines, my dear Emppu stretching is chops! Yeah you can also shred!! This song his a romantic/visceral get in your face moment!! They are going in fearlessly. Marco and Floor coming in with the call of the wild!! Floor' windmills could power up a city like Rotterdam or Québec. Witch scream fiercely coming up! This performance puts many of my favourite bands to shame....Like we say in French : On fait sortir le méchant!!

Yes it's a pity who we haven't a live version from Tarja but i don't believe that she makes some difference because she hates this song. But hopefully we have some from Annete's era.

  • @demopem

You're right about Wacken 2013. I think that what happened was that after the band had been through some really rough times, with friction within, culminating with Anette falling ill during the tour, forcing them to bring in a replacement earlier than planned. (Anette was pregnant so at least a temporary replacement was planned, but not for a few months I believe.) Then Floor had to learn the songs and they had to get used to each other. At Wacken 9 or 10 months had passed, and they have tuned into each other and the entire band was in a better place than they had been in a very long time.

One thing I hadn't really noticed before is how dry Emppu's sound is on the Once album. His muted notes are incredibly crisp - almost "too perfect". Marko's bass sound has evolved a little too. The guitars are definitely more forward in the mix. The ending on the albumn is harsh and industrial, something again they've changed over time. Romanticide is definitely one that seems to suit Annette's style, the song really seems to lend itself to multiple vocal interpretations. I agree about the "state of grace". Nightwish always deliver live, but there just seemed to be such a confluence of events to make this show special. I swear during Storytime in this same concert you can see the moment when Tuomas knows "they're back", a big grin and a look to the centre.

I speak 5 languages, but French is not one, so I must really concentrate to read your words...but its worth every moment!
This was brilliant! I've never heard the album/Tarja version, and it was sooo good. Tho Marco's vocal is subdued, I could finally hear his words, and you're right...he is the storyteller here. I don't know what year that album was recorded, but being familiar w Marco's solo band, Tarot, I know how dynamic his voice is. I do like how his vocal is softer, yet I love his stronger live vocals...more "rockstar"!
I also had never seen Annete live...her voice is much thinner, and maybe bc it was a practice, or soundcheck, she wasn't sounding very powerful, yet her singing had such clarity. Her mic had reverb on it,.. I dont know enough to say, but think perhaps it's to help w the impression that she's holding her notes longer? I still.very much enjoyed the performance...and Jukka's drumming...fantastic! The Wacken/Floor version just feels so passionate and powerful, esp w her ability to hold those notes in harmony w Marco!
I see nothing to gain from comparing these women. They each made a massive contribution to Nightwish, in their own way. I enjoyed each version.

In the beginning with Tarja as lead, the music was very symphonic. More like an opera, very theatre. This made for amazing songs with her vocals. With Anette, the music was less symphonic, to me it had a very folk vibe, kinda popish. Now with Floor, even though I am not a fan of the context of the lyrics, I still love the beautiful music.. I have never seen this training session before and honestly: I like it. It is different with Anette but she holds her ground. Normally I find Anette good to very good in the studio (love Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum), less in live with a few exceptions, but it sounds OK here. Maybe because there’s less pressure, it’s more relaxed. I don’t know.
Haha, Emppu couldn’t be bothered playing his solo. You have to love that guy!!!

This is the last song which I loved from Once album, with dead gardens. Many times i changed the position of the songs to find the next loving songs 😂.
I was boring to listening it all the time 😂. They never played in lives in Once's tour and finally almost lost it. Then came Annete's era and i am lishening a live from Sibiu Romania if I remember well or madova Italia and i like it with Annete's voice ,i found more interesting the song with her.
In one video of Tarja's solo career finally I heard in live and the dead gardens and I like it very much 😂.
So after years i loved finally all the album as never before.
Now I like the album version very much , especially in the end reminds me the tribal of the human nature album. Wonderful music, all the instruments on fire 🔥, Marco is fantastic in bass,i love his playing and i love his singing, Jukka's had a dreaming playing and Emmpu is amazing. Tarja's studio version is more romantic for me but we haven't a live version of her,so bad.
I saw Annete Olson in Quylain's channel for the first time,i love Annete's era,i love her in both albums and i like her lives also, her version was more light but the result of the total changes was perfect 😉.
Finally we have Wacken festival with Floor, what can I say? Perfect version and a fantastic show in total.
    All members in their best.
As Quylain said, hopefully we have this live in DVD. Perfection!!!
It's not one of my favourite songs from NW but after years i used to like and grow insight me every time.
It's a good song like dead gardens is but because we had so great songs in Once's album we choose the best and some songs became less interesting back then.
I never tried to analyse the lyrics before,so the next analysis video will be very interesting for me.

The imagery of some of the lyrics. There's a sense of tragedy and darkness, and corruption. Eternal shame and the sense that normal actions cannot be done, an inability. Thank you for another great reaction Guylain, i`m sorry i missed it live.😔
I think the topic about the "perfect" live performance is very interesting and this is something i have thinked about many times. What makes some concerts better than others? I think it`s about many pieces that needs to fall in place at the same time. I belive all the musicians needs to feel great at the same time, the sound technicians needs to find that perfect mix where everything, instruments and vocals is perfect balanced, the air and temperature must be good, the acoustics at the venue needs to be good. But most important (atleast on rock\pop concerts) the fans have to be up for it. I think an audience that is lit, gives the artists that extra energy to find their best level.
i have actually been to some concert where the music and sound is great, but where the fans never really was 100% in on it. This have been conserts in the middle of the week, so maybe people are tired of work, school or whatever?🤷‍♂️
I have also been to a few concerts where everything was right and the atmosphere was fantastic. I will never forget those concerts and it still gives me goosebumps to think about it.
I think Wacken 2013 was one of those perfect nights. I have also chatted with people that was there and they confirm that this consert was amazing.
It`s an interesting topic, but i think the audience need to do their part to create these magical moments. The band and the audience needs to become one.
And then it will become a memory the band and the fans will never forget.💥

It's exactly what I am thinking of.
Wacken festival is the greatest of all, especially the nights. Festivals always have a great audience and it's a vacation time for them.
Their ages back then was thirty something and the songs who played there, were the best of all previous albums, all well known to the audience.
It's was perfect time,a perfect night with tremendous success songs and the DVD is history, great history.
Yes I believe the audience makes always the difference with the band, they push them to go farther.

    • @GuylainPrince

One other factor : Wacken is a festival. Many bands before and probably some after (I don't know the set list). So, NW does not rely on "personalized pyro and lightning". Nos as much as in a regular concert. Everything holds together if the musicians are "one mind and one spirit" with the crowd. It is the band and a crowd. Nothing else. This was Wacken. Perfection.

I really liked seeing the song with all three singers, and I had actually never seen that version with Anette so it was a pleasant first for me as well. I also very much agree with the stance that it's not very interesting to keep discussing who's the best and that it's more interesting to look at what they brought to the table.
Tarja and Anette gives us pretty much what we always expect from them in tone and style, and it's an interesting contrast. Floor is so diverse that you can't always know what to expect and she does it differently to both, but closer to Anette's version than Tarja's. Hearing the three versions really does show you a good, albeit not complete, picture of the band's evolution. I enjoy all three but it's Floor's rendition that has stayed with me as the one I'll go back to listen to.
The Wacken performance isn't just great because of Floor though, it's the entire sound of the band and, in particular, that Marko does better vocal choices and is much better mixed than in the other versions. You hear him more clearly, he sings more powerfully, and he also sings more than in the other versions. I don't think Nightwish has just changed with new band members but the long time members have also kept evolving and improving so even many older songs tends to be performed better across the board to my taste.
On the topic of Anette being very pop and jazz, I do suggest watching Nightwish perform Slow Love Slow at the Monterux Jazz Festival 2012. There you'll see a real jazz version of Anette and I dare say that none of the other singers can match her on that particular thing.
When it comes to Wacken 2013 I can only agree that it's one of those concerts that just created magic. Personally I think that the Wembley 2015 concert rivals it for the top spot of Nightwish concerts though, with the band performing excellently, having a great set list, and Floor showing even greater diversity than in Wacken. I guess that goes for Nightwish overall since they've just kept being great and improving, despite suffering multiple line up changes in key positions. So with all the great music, the great lyrics, the great band members, the great concerts, etc, I think Nightwish might be well described by "an embarrassment of riches".

Impressive contribution to the discussion. I agree with you, with one exception : Wembley. But for a very limited reason : the miking of the drums. At one point, they remove one "floor tom", a very important one in some of the songs. I missed it. But for the rest, I agree : top notch!

  • @cainyourkids
    @cainyourkids 3 года назад

Wacken 2013 honestly just hit the right mix of grit and polished. Floor's vocals came through perfectly (unlike how she sounded muddled in Wembley, and she was really sick in Buenos Aires 2018), the instruments were clearly heard. The only issue - a very small one - with Wacken 2013 was that the choir background was almost inaudible but everything else was perfect. Wembley had great instruments but Floor's vocals lacked reverb (as if removed during editing), Tampere feels like there's too much 'air' into the editing and Buenos Aires is the closest to Wacken in terms of overall quality but Floor recovering from the flu meant she was not as polished, especially during the latter part of the concert (you can hear Floor stumble through the first 'the tapestry of chemistry' part during TGSOE, her concentration was obviously used up by then).

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  3 года назад +1

Since the final mix of Wacken is a studio decision, I would suggest to you that they felt that the live performance was the highlight. This is the album that i discovered Nightwish from. It was a huge seller in Europe for the band and really put them on the international musical map.
Funny thing is i loved the album but not this song. Again it has beautiful elements but the whole is not satisfying and it was only after going backwards and discovering their earlier albums that i realized i didn't like the new direction Tarja's voice had taken. It had become harsh and shrill on some songs like this one which may have been deliberate but left me cold.
On the other hand Emppu's guitar sound had really improved and Jukka had changed his drumming style. I love his older style but this new direction was much more interesting to my ears at least.
Anette's voice on the later two albums suits the material but i think she had trouble finding the power to compete with the music live and she felt uncomfortable being made to sing Tarja era songs apparently, which was awkward as that it what she was hired to do.
Floor on the other hand had all the elements the others lacked, stage presence, power, clarity of voice and an amazing ability to reinterpret the older songs as we see here and will see to more advantage when it comes to Ghost love score.
In my estimation this is the least good song on the Wacken set list. I especially have never liked the off kilter ending with its confusing time signatures. I ask myself every time, did Jukka lose his timing in those last few beats. But somehow they still manage to knock it out of the park and Floor raises hell on vocals. Well she does sound a bit demonic with that scream at the end.

Nope! He did not! The punch of the whole band was on the back beat, an inversion that we witnessed a few times in others and older songs. They master this, to the perfection. As for the time signature : As a ex-drummer, this is music to my ears. Some of the changes that Tarja made, I liked and others, a bit less. 50/50. But the change on voice corresponds to a change in interest in the topics of the songs, a different attitude. Tuomas and NW wanted to explore new subjects.

Pour moi ce qui rend la version de Wacken avec Floor nettement supérieure, est la magie des vocalises de Floor et Marco ensemble et le glissando en duo de la mort à la fin, qui scelle définitivement le sort des autres performances. 😉

I think they all shine in particular techniques, and they are all mature and confident enough to step back for each other to express the technique if another of them is more specialised in it.
As they have reached that maturity as a band, none of them (on any instrument or vocal) feels the need to dominate or show off - rather they each serve the song in the best way they are able. If there is ego in Nightwish, it is a group ego. They all express as much pride in the performance of each other as they do in themselves.

@@Meine.Postma Well, yeah - although on that particular subject I would have to put in a strong word for Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz. Floor, after all, had the relative luxury of 48 hours and a rehearsal to learn the setlist - they had around 48 minutes after doing a full set themselves with Kamelot, before going on stage live in front of a packed house. While they may not have killed it, they did achieve a miracle in allowing the gig to go ahead. I don't think they ever had a chance to be "the best", but their epic achievement should not go unremarked upon or forgotten - and both of them apparently made a point of learning the whole setlist of any band they opened for since then, which is probably good advice for anyone on the way up - vocalist OR instrumentalist.
It is great that we have such a rich history to share and so many variations in preference are catered for in Nightwish.

Oh, there is quite a lot to go over with this one...
I will leave the interpretation of the anger and pain for the [ANALYSE], but yeah, this was one of the first truly "angry" songs that Tuomas penned ("Slaying the Dreamer" off the 4th album came close, but not quite reaching there).
An acknowledgement: I am now absolutely certain that NIGHTWISH guys were not out of their minds, or lacking in judgement, when they picked Anette to replace Tarja. Many fans gave the poor second singer hell, but she was - after watching the practice video of this extremely difficult song, I am positive - consciously picked to have a voice, personality, and "school" of interpretation as far removed from Tarja as possible. Precisely NOT to be compared; for them all to move on and to do new things. Sadly, few were the folks that "got" it. Btw, you are SO right about Anette's "forte", that would be rooted in jazz or soul music... she shows her true colors in a live rendition of "Slow, Love, Slow" - an exceptional song for NIGHTWISH and, I think, composed by Tuomas especially to gratify his singer and show her in her element. The song is not on your list (we'd need one that went 50-long), but make sure to check it out! Anette sure CAN and COULD sing, just not Classical. And when she was comfortable with the material, she was up there with the best.
Now some notes on the filmed performances... I can sense Emmpu's guitar sound is different for the studio and the practice ones, it was really "dry" and biting on the "Once" album. A tuning decision that makes the album stand out in one more way (me, I did not like that sound at first)... while the return to more "rich" sound for the 2013 version makes it a welcome difference, so we can appreciate both. Now, Emppu is a joy; the solo in "Romanticide" is one of his most accomplished if you ask me; fully aware of the fiendish tapping part he does at 26:13, the little man makes a face I noticed you notice, as if saying "ohh I'm so spent", and proceeds riffing away like nothing the matter. :))) And I cannot recount my mirth when I realized it is during the SOLO part in practice, beginning at 16:01, that the band is going on rhythm, while Emppu is innocently chugging water! xD The man is hilarious, and confident as god simultaneously! He is like, rest you guys, i am nailing that nuisance of a solo. :)))))) \m/ On a side note, when Tuomas takes a good long sip of wine during a break in the Wacken version, I often feel the urge to do the same. :) Can't watch it at work....
Eh, you will notice there was not much I wrote about the studio version, the original. Well, not much there; I just did not enjoy the song in its initial guise, and although I have learned to (in the wake of later Live feats) it still would not make my Top-20. However, Floor does with the song what she wants, and she clearly wants to bring this angry disillusioned beast to life - the one place where our Valkyrie DOES use a glissando on that final note (10 glorious seconds in company of Marco from 27:50...) it is akin to summoning all Pandemonium in a little "Let me fly you to hell" moment. That is probably the attitude the song needed - and was not registered in studio, where it kind of just... ends, the powerhouse soprano drowned by the riffs. Some say it was not a favorite of Tarja herself. I can tell.

Dear Big G, thanks for the input and insights. Love'em! I did not know Annette's background; I was just commenting on what I heard. And this is the one point where Floor could improve. You remember my reaction to "How's the Heart?" section, the "gospel style" improve she makes at one point.? Do you remember my reaction? I said it : I would like Floor to tackle this genre a bit more. She would be phenomenal - if it is possible to surpass herself. Even as a rocker, she has a "classical" approach to signing : studying the words and the melody, finding the best way to give the best of them, and reproducing night after night a well rehearsed interpretation of the song. In this, she is in a class by herself. Now, let's see a bit of freedom, something that most classical singers are not capable of.

    • @bigg2988

@@GuylainPrince Dear Brother, thanks for the nice words, as ever! In fact, i ought to check Anette's musical background, I have not implied she studied jazz or something, rather that I am sure by what I have heard those are the styles of singing - more relaxed, more improvisational - that she is at home with. Recorded evidence says your assessment is pretty much spot-on. :)
Regarding Floor's "branching out", I think she did a marvelous job of it at last year's "Beste zangers" TV show that you must have received numerous heads-up notes about. I do not remember however, did you watch any of it? Our girl just went through some vocal styles that take years to master, and were until then alien to her, like it was a given. And if anything good will ever come out of this quarantine, it may be that she will record enough covers of famous songs for an album in itself! Floor already did takes on such diverse styles as Disney princess in "Let It Go", and "Alone", the emotional 80s hit from HEART... along with a couple of beautiful Dutch songs, of which I admittedly do not know the originals to compare. But the result was rewarding at minimum. :) So the day may be upon us when Floor reappears as a stylistic chameleon in addition to being a rock powerhouse and a Classical diva on any given night.

Sometimes I find some small part or detail in the performance that really grabs my attention. The his time it’s Tarja’s version’s chorus when she sings “Till love do me part”. Especially word “part”. The way she sings it while all instrumentals get silent to give room for her dark and straightforward - not even singing, more like “calling”. There’s a feeling of willingness to challenge whatever is coming and a passionate promise to not fall. I may be silly tho, because of imagining too much meaning in the way one word is sung, but I can’t get enough of it.
I’m on watching the part with Annette. I do not dislike her vocals itself, but I still I have a feeling that it’s out of place. I don’t want to discredit her as the singer, it’s just that her “vibes” and “vibes” of Nightwish didn’t match.

Her presence looked energetic and I would have loved to see more of her. Although I think Floor is THE right singer for Nightwish. As You said in some earlier video, she is Storyteller, and that is what Nightwish is truly about! And her chemistry with rest of band appear to be best of three. She is like one of the guys! Technically, it could be discussed. Tarja is excellent in what she does. And this is a classical mindset : we will find the repertoire that fits your colour, your style of voice. Tuomas wrote songs that are perfect for Tarja's voice. And it shows. She is quite unique in singing them. Floor has more distance toward the songs; it is not as "personal" of a situation for her. She is very professional in singing someone else's repertoire. It would be interesting to hear Tarja singing "Floor's era" songs. We would have a better appreciation of both singers' capacities. All of this is very interesting, if done in repect. For the women involved, the singers that they are, and of each other. Exactly like you do. Thank you!

The thing that really strikes home here is how context affects a song, especially the feedback from an audience. I would like to compare the Annette practice video with Annette singing it in front of a crowd. I’d bet that there will be a lot more energy than we saw. The studio version is clinical, lacks (to me) the passion that you want the song to have. And Wacken... 80,000 people feeding you, it’s going to be good, but they give back so much. Exactly the right amount of passion, aggression, contempt to convey the meaning even without the words.

There is a unique quality to a studio album. There is a unique quality to a live version. The audio experience is enhanced - especially for me, an audiophile - in a very well crafted album, like those of NW. The "global dimension" of a repertoire is better experienced in a live concert. Here, the strong material is complemented by the "performer's" value. And NW are GREAT performers. Marko and Floor, especially. It is another "product", another experience. And the band excels at both!
