    58:23 Could you perhaps explain why you are making fun of the artist here? I don't think that's very nice. Without a good explanation for laughing at this passage, I can't do anything with it at all. I grew up Christian and my parents taught me that there is no one truth and that I must respect every person and their beliefs. Making fun of a different view of life is also the problem with being convinced in your own faith. Too often I have met people who would put me on the right path. Their path. I repeat: their path. No one knows what we are doing here on this planet, and certainly not why. That is why faith is called faith. Nothing more and nothing less. And when I see that even in the promised land the most horrible sides of humanity come to the surface, then it is not strange at all to look at religion with a pedantic finger. I don't blame religion, but the people who profess it and think they have a basis in that religion to justify all that suffering. Religion is weak there. A weak fantasy, with very serious consequences. Furthermore, this album is the first in what will be a trilogy. And Human Nature is part 2. Part 3 will come later this year, and we may see things that have already been touched on in the previous two. I wrote this in a tongue you will understand. I hope 😉 Peace!

    As a fellow Finn, atheist and of similar age to Tuomas *and* having grown up in a small conservative town I'm going to shed some light to the atmosphere we grew in. Finland has a state religion. For quite some time it was illegal to not be part of any religion. When I was kid it was legal not to be religious, and you could even not attend classes teaching Christianity in school, but the system and community made it very sure they'd make your life shitty if you did it. I personally waited until I had escaped to a big city before I dared to leave the church. I remember when my little brother, who's the same age than Tuomas, was thirteen. He was playing in a football team and one of their teammates died, which was quite heavy stuff for groups of thirteen year olds. In the funeral the whole team was present and the priest, years later found guilty for beating his wife for decades, preached how playing football is a sin and the players would go to hell. I can assure you stuff like this did leave some deep held grudges against the most vocal Christians. It's not always fair to those who actually follow teachings of the Christ with good heart, but it is human to have to somehow process this unfairness out of your system.

    I like this musically, especially live, because of the tribal elements, the drums and the exotic string instruments. It's indeed not melodically very complicated; it's intricate on percussions, like a nod to Sepultura. And especially on the live version the *tone* of Marko's and Floor's voices are glorious. Juicy. It's then a matter of taste if these elements are enough to carry the weight for you. But I'm a simple metalhead, I like straightforward songs, too.

    The bible-black fools. I know Tuomas is an atheist, and so am I, but I see this at least as much as a commentary against certain narrow-minded Christianity that centers around Old Testament and judgment and gloom as anti-religious. Critique of people like American evangelicals in the Mid-West. Bear with me, I'll try to explain myself. First, let's take this story: --- 'When the Rabbi was asked "Why did God create atheists?"... "God created atheists to teach us the most important lesson of them all - the lesson of true compassion. You see, when an atheist performs an act of charity, visits someone who is sick, helps someone in need, and cares for the world, he is not doing so because of some religious teaching. He does not believe that God commanded him to perform this act. In fact, he does not believe in God at all, so his actions are based on his sense of morality. Look at the kindness he bestows on others simply because he feels it to be right. When someone reaches out to you for help. You should never say "I'll pray that God will help you." Instead, for that moment, you should become an atheist - imagine there is no God who could help, and say "I will help you"."' --- And I believe this aligns very much with teachings of Jesus. Despite being atheist, I am relatively well versed in core teachings of the Christ. And when you look at what *he* tells you to do to get to heaven, these are the main two parts: Matthew 25:41-45 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ Matthew 19:23-24 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” Then there's a part about believing in God to get to Heaven, but I'm not going to focus on that one here because I'm more interested about how people *conduct* themselves. -- So how I see this is that Tuomas is frustrated about people using God to justify being harsh and judgemental to others, and focusing on the hate and bitterness. Like you said, forgetting the love. And this idea of "the only noble thing to die for is another person" is something I see in the actual teaching of Jesus being very much present. So as an atheist, I have very little conflict with Christians who actually follow the main theme of the teachings of the person they named themselves after. The problem are the people who remember to call out his name, but not his ideals. And I believe this is the core of what Tuomas, too, is communicating in this song.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin 5 месяцев назад

      And to emphasize, these are not cherry-picked verses. There are only *four* places in the whole Bible I am aware of where Jesus himself tells what it takes to get to Heaven. Which is why those four places were taught to me, when I was kid, as the core of Christianity. Because a) following the Christ and b) getting to Heaven were considered the most critical things.

      Further, I take the "pre-apocalypse" to refer to a certain mindset where the rapture, or whatever, is right behind the corner so there's no point in making the _present_ world a better place. The ultimate lack of love for the fellow man.

    I read "Still given everything, may I be deserving" as a way of saying "I did my best and while it might have not been as much as you or I hoped it would be, I hope I still deserve some credit or peace". Ie. he hopes that despite being an imperfect and incompete human, he would still be considered worthy. Deserving.. maybe love? Acceptance? Remorse?

    • @JariJuslin

      And G to E minor... I see it as a way to express how age and growing up changes the tone. The building blocks are the same, but as you get older the responsibilities and adulthood put them into more somber order, and the joy and innocence of childhood is lost. All the elements are still there, but you don't see or get the same joy out of them anymore.

    The anger in Marko's voice in the Dark Passion Play. He *was* there, he saw the dysfunction of the band with Tarja and he saw Tuomas ripped apart for doing what he thought necessary to do to keep the ship afloat. The rawness and anger in his voice spits out his anger about how his friend was treated.

    Watching this I realized I might have been overthinking the first line. It can just mean Tuomas was "treating" his depression with alcohol. We do know, as a proper goth, red wine is his alcoholic drink if choice and he even has a holder for wine bottle in the stand for his keyboards. So it might not be a metaphor, but literal wine.

  • @JariJuslin
    @JariJuslin 5 месяцев назад

    Back in the day Tuomas commented that this song explains how he'd like to be remembered when he dies. "Remember not the hand that wrote it, remember only the verse". I'm also going to argue he's since reached that "immortality" he saw as a chance back then - he will certainly be remembered for his art for years to come by plenty of people. The songs importance for Tuomas is also apparent in Emppu's guitar solo here - he looked very somber, which is so unlike his normal presence. He looked like he was playing this in Tuomas' funeral.

    Nice to hear your deep analysis ....yes Tuomas and Tarja had a special connection and that also make NW possible plus oriented the whole path forward. Also therefore it was so painful what happened in 2005 and to get out of that. I just wonder the lyrics too...how deep lines there when the writer is hardly 20 years young. For me Oceanborn is still the Album ... not only because I found NW after the release of it. That album defined the genre globally.
