    In all the years I've been testing amps, I've never tested a CT Sounds car audio amplifier. Well friends, that's about to change! Today I'll take a look at the CT-400.1D, a monoblock amp aimed at the starter basshead or someone who just wants a simple amp to power a subwoofer for some extra bump. I think sometimes we forget not everyone wants a huge amplifier or the sacrifices that come with it. An amp like the CT-400.1D can provide ample output to power smaller subwoofer setups.
    The CT-400.1D is rated to deliver:
    150W at 4 ohms
    300W at 2 ohms
    400W at 1 ohm
    all at 14.4V DC
    As usual, we will unbox the amp, check out the features, test on the Dyno and try it with a subwoofer. Make sure you stick around to the end to see extended tests!

    When you hold the camera behind the woofer durring the sound demo, the music breaks up really bad like theirs some serious distortion. I know it’s not the woofer distorting but I’m curious if you know why this happens? Are the frequency so low off to the side of the box that it’s distorting the camera microphone? If so what’s making the frequency do that? The sound should be the same reguardless of the camera placement but I see this happen all the time in your videos. I’m just wondering what about the threshold created the distortion observed when filming from the side as opposed to the front of the box? Great video as always brother. Thanks!

    • @johncoops6897
      @johncoops6897 3 года назад

      Yep, and a MUCH better connection. I mentioned it few years ago and D brushed me off with some silly BS excuse.
      I would consider ferrules were 100% mandatory for a professional installation, so perhaps D isn't in that league?

    • @ChrisDIYerOklahoma
      @ChrisDIYerOklahoma 3 года назад +2

      @@johncoops6897 -- I respect what he does on his channel...love his work and showing others what he does. However, most people don't use ferrules or know how they benefit their installs. IMHO - not using them is a safety issue. One small fray of wire hitting the amplifier chassis will short out an amp, blow fuses, damage speakers, fire, etc-etc. Crushing copper wires with those set screws also causes a weak connection...esp when one is pushing high amperage. I cringe when folks don't use them...but, people do far worse things.

    • @johncoops6897
      @johncoops6897 3 года назад

      @@ChrisDIYerOklahoma - yep. Seeing him pulling a hundred amps or more through a shitty screw connection is cringe worthy, and I wonder how much it affects his results?. Imagine the voltage drop caused because maybe only half the conductors in the cable are actually connected at the ends!
      He's not using a 4-wire measurement connection so if it says "14.4 Volts" where exactly is that being measured? Certainly not at the Amplifier itself!

    • @ChrisDIYerOklahoma
      @ChrisDIYerOklahoma 3 года назад

      @@johncoops6897 -- Exactly. Connections are the most CRITICAL junction in a circuit. There are so many videos out there showing how improper terminal connections (like battery lugs, power amplifier leads, speaker connections, etc) causes all kinds of problems (thermal imaging proves this...they overheat due to loose, frayed, weak junctions). Properly sized ferrules that match the hole size and wire size will reduce the guesswork and make for a more proper connection and current flow. And safer.

    I think it beats the Jensen xda91rb for a budget amp (in some cases). The Jensen has no subsonic filter and no way to add a bass knob unless you buy an inline plus the additional RCA's to adapt it (makes it more expensive than CT at that point). Plus the Jensen app is buggy with some phones. The Jensen is more capable power-wise but you need a DSP with its limited features. Lets be honest though, how many people willing to invest in a DSP are using either of these amps? Either would be ok if you have a head unit with decent processing and you were trying to bang on a budget, but if you have that capability I'd go Jensen for the extra power.

  • @DamonDupriez

    I'd like to see you talk more in your reviews on watts in regards decibel output please Big-D. For example, this amplifier makes between 35% and 50% more than rated power at any given impedence and input voltage. This will be an audible difference to most people, and highly appreciated by budget buyers at this price point. By comparison, that an amplifier rated at, say, 3000WRMS 'only' makes 2800WRMS when tested is irrelevant. This is only a 7% difference in total power and therefore - while 200WRMS is 'missing' - there is no audible difference whatsoever between its measured and rated power. Your reviews focus too heavily on meeting numbers, when most of the time it just doesn't matter - especially as total power increases. Also, efficiency at 1ohm being 'low' is irrelevant in an amplifier this modest in total power, as any car charging system/battery will cope with this amount of current draw so this is a non-issue. You need to consider these things when critiquing gear.

    • @chrishuyler3580
      @chrishuyler3580 2 года назад

      Decibel output is really going to depend on all the other equipment used and more importantly the nature of the installation. You can pretty much assume higher wattage provides the potential for greater decibel output. What Big D provides here is a clean comparison against other amplifiers he has tested, and verification (or lack thereof) of the manufacturers claims. You can take the actual wattage produced, and the efficiency to create that wattage and compare to other brands and make your own decision on what to buy. The only thing Big D doesn't provide, which would be nice, is a dollar per watt ratio, but he likely omits it because so many of the products change in price over the course of their run and by the time his video comes out it could have changed again.

    Is doing more than rated a good thing? Like if the amp is rated 400w RMS but is really doing 500w and you put a 400w RMS sub onto it, wouldnt that mean youre over powering your sub and it could blow?

Have the aluminum finish 300(mono) and 100(4 channel) , 4 Pro 6inch, 12inch dule4, 4 tweeters...all to fit stock speaker locations..... This budget system was almost 600 bucks!

    400w is more than many people realize. Doubling wattage of any amount, 400w to 800w or 40000w to 80000w will only give about a 3db gain. That is considered by some to be the smallest amount of volume increase that is detectable by the human ear, in other words, not much louder. You need something around a 10db increase to double volume. Its been a while since I have looked but I believe it takes a 10x increase in power to hit the 10db gain, but don't quote me on it without double checking. the first few hundred watts do the most, you get rapidly diminishing returns after that.

    I purchased this amp based on your testing and review. It did not disappoint for what I needed. However, it seems cold weather affects it reliability until it warms up: protect mode rears it's head sub 50 degrees F with mine. Is there a way to test that? Certain electronic components are affected by temp, which begs to question it's internal circuitry for less than mild climates.
