Simone Simons may look like a supermodel - she has the blog, photographs, and beauty partnerships to back it up - but she is much more than just the face of the Dutch metal band, Epica. Simone has a voice and a lifestyle to be reckoned with.
Simone’s vocals are widely recognized for both their beauty and power. As the frontwoman of a symphonic metal band with death metal tendencies, Simone brings versatility in singing styles, combining both classical and contemporary technique.
In this episode, we discuss how she got into singing in the first place, how she blended classical and contemporary techniques, and how she kept her infant son quiet while recording. I also wanted to discuss something I have recently experienced as well - how pregnancy and being a mother actually affected the voice. And so, this is also a bonding conversation between two new moms!

So incredibly excited for this one, Simone's voice has been a huge part of my musical life ever since I first discovered Epica in 2004! 🥰💜
Yay! She is such a beautiful and wonderous person to talk to. I hope you really enjoy our chat, Tauri!
@@TheCharismaticVoice I know I will, hopefully one day I will get the chance to meet/talk with her too. 😍
@@TheCharismaticVoice You are the Best!!! Thanks so much for getting Simone Simons! I kept on Guessing that! It finally is Happening! I'm in Awe!! I Met her 3 times!! She's a Class Act!! Epica is Coming up to Detroit, Michigan in October.
Yay! The only comment missing here is from Smoon herself. 🙂
@@TheCharismaticVoice Elizabeth, you should react to "Unleashed" that Simone mentioned in the interview. It's one of Epica songs with no harsh male vocals. And Simone's voice is so beautiful. The song has one of the most epic key changes too. 🙂
Simone always seems so formally informal, she's so beautiful and well spoken
Beautiful inside and out!
She is the definition of a classic lady.
Class personified
European, so more reserved. So way less obnoxious and way more in control of her emotions, and not giggly like immature Americans like Elizabeth.
The women of metal changed my life. Simone is one of the best in any genre.
Sounds like an interesting story there?
I discovered Floor through Beste Zangers in 2020. That brought
me to Nightwish and I had never really listen to metal before. This brought me to listen to other great metal bands and especially to the women. I love Floor, Simone, Annekka, Sharon, and so many others. I had stopped really listening to music because I hated what I heard on the radio. I live in the US and thanks to You Tube I have found the greatest artist are in metal. I had never felt so many emotions and I had never cried until I heard Floor. It is such a joy hearing the ladies sing.
@@edwarddoss1006 Hooray for Beste Zangers!
Welcome to the long hair club! 🙂
@@edwarddoss1006 100th like from me. 🙂 Btw, how many Epica songs do you know? Most or just a few?
@@cancelled_user I have The Divine Conspiracy, Omega, and Design Your Universe. Also have the Source from Ayreon.
Simone's voice has always been lovely, but it's become more and more refined and expertly controlled over the years.
Actually, I first heard your voice in the Kamelot song The Haunting. But after I became completely obsessed with Nightwish once Floor joined, I delved deeply into Epica because I was unaware how unbelievably talented you Dutch singers are! You, Floor, Anneke, and Sharon, I want to thank for sharing your beautiful voices with the world. Unleashed and Consign to Oblivion are not songs. They are masterpieces. It was so funny when Elizabeth saw the live performance of Consign to Oblivion, worried about the audience members participating in The circle of death 😂💜
It looks like your Tea Time interviews are starting to hit the big time. Congratulations!
What do you mean "starting to"? She already had the singers of some of the biggest bands in current rock and metal on her show (e.g. Alter Bridge, Shinedown, Halestorm, Sabaton, Dream Theater and Arch Enemy). Simone Simons is a welcome addition to an already decently long list of high-profile singers!
Elizabeth's tea time interviews are already amazing! She had Alyssa, Arjen, and the episode with Will Ramos just to name a few. Now, Simone! Elizabeth is doing an incredible job ❤️❤️❤️
She was talking to Devin Townsend from the beginning… Brittney Slayes… It has started and stayed at the big time!
I love Simone's voice. Her voice touches me and goes through me unlike any other singer's. She's the GOAT as far as I'm concerned.
This is going to be so EPIC,a meeting of the two most amazing women on the planet; apart from my MOM and Sis that is! ❤I can't wait !!! 😃
I see your grammar error and clever disguise, G.L.. Clever. Clever.
This woman is just such a treasure. And by this woman, I mean both.
Oh, I'm so happy Simone accepted your interview.
Hope you could get also Dianne van Giersbergen, which is another dutch gem in the symphonic metal scene.
Yeah, Dianne is awesome. I recommend checking out this video to get a sense of her style: ruclips.net/video/GR8u5f0weT4/видео.html
Did you mean Anneke? Agreed!
@@Lindy_Enalya Not Anneke. Dianne van Giersbergen is a different dutch singer and afaik not related to Anneke.
Yes! It would be lovely to hear Dianne talk with Elizabeth!
The Charismatic Voice collecting symphonic metal singers like infinity stones. Loving that for her, and us
These are some of the most humanizing interviews in this genre. So wonderful.
I never wanted so much to watch an interview my whole life
I’m only about 48 minutes in. I feel like she’s given more detail about her vocal routine than any other singer you’ve interviewed since you started this series. I really appreciate that!
OH HELLLLLLL YEEEEEE! Been waiting for this interview for two years!
In 2021 when Delta Covid hit, I lost my cousin and some friends almost at the same time. The work load was crazy because of the recession. I didn't have time to mourn, let alone cry. But that evening Epica was playing in my laptop and "The Canvass of Life" plays. I couldn't hold myself and I cried like a baby. I realized I haven't really mourn properly.
Now that I know the story behind the song, it makes me wanna cry again.
Thank you Elizabeth and Simone for this beautiful interview. ❤
What I notice about Elizabeth Zharoff is that she obviously has a very very high Intelligence Quotient and is very humble about it. Her ability to break down vocal aspects of songs floors me every time I listen. She hears things I would never detect and these evaluation breakdowns really help people to understand just how difficult it is to be a quality vocalist. Just keeping timing with the flow of a song (by the vocalist) is a basic prerequisite that many just assume is easy. It’s not! 👏
Elizabeth has a masters and a BS in engineering. Yes, she is a very intelligent woman.
She is actually a mind blowing opera singer as well. I heard a few songs here and there, things like Skyrim related stuff lol. Then I listen to her sing straight up classic Italian opera and I was like hold on she's got a whole amplifier factory down there
I feel like an absolute smooth brain when Elizabeth talks but that's what intrigued me. She is very intelligent and deep. I love seeing someone so passionate about something as complex as vocalization. I can't sing to save my life so vocalists and musicians in general feel like enchantment wizards. Music is life so enjoy.🤘
Simone and her Band Epica are a big part of my life. I've been there since the Phantom Agony. They got me through some tough moments.
See you in a few months in Brussels.
Great interview.
That tid bit at the start about Dutchies have name diminutives. Also...recording with the baby just staring in awe ...that was so cute and wholesome. And maan...her English is damn good
I'm glad Simone didn't listen to her great aunt, I'm glad she didn't become a flute pro otherwise we would have missed out on a great vocal treasure
Pro singers singing when they're a bit and still land it is more credit to their skill and well...professionalism. And another sign of amazing professionalism and dedication...recording so soon after giving birth, not much sleep...singing when fully pregnant and losing a loved one....holy hell. You know what you call this?...Being an Absolute BAD ASS!
One of the 3 Dutch Queens interviewed...: I do hope you, miss(or mrs?) Zharoff, will manage to bring Floor Jansen and Sharon den Adel into the fold as well.
Thank you both for a great 2 hours!
A message for Simone - You're just outstanding! What a fabulous vocalist you are and thank you Elizabeth for reviewing such a talented person.
Seconded!
Indeed🎤
She is not only absolutely beautiful but also insanely talented. Epica and other symphonic metal bands are a welcome addition to my metal collection.
Simone got me back into metal after almost a decade and I've discovered so many bands since. This is great!
This is the one I'm the most excited about. Simone's talent has been rocking my musical life for a long time now. Love her voice and love EPICA. Thank you for doing this!
Same, and I feel she does not get the attention she deserves from the broader public, hope this is turning around now like it did for Floor Jansen 2 years ago!
@@rolsen1304 It’s always nice to see artists we like get recognition, but S has been pretty open about not liking being famous. She says she wishes that when she's offstage she could be invisible. So I'm not sure she'd be interested in more attention.
@@Sarcasticron True, and I'm sure she would hate to be more busy then she is already. Still, a statue in her hometown is in order;)
Simone is a premiere member of a very small group of Dutch Goddesses who came to our planet from Asgard and have blessed us with their brilliance!! There has to be something in the water, cause those girls from the Netherlands sure have the pipes!! She is such a beautiful person, beyond her talent, and to see her loving relationship with the other singers is totally a thing of beauty. Thanks, Elizabeth, for bringing this fun interview to us!! Love you both!
@SuperPapajew It's what you do when you drop your bar of soap in the prison shower.
@SuperPapajew Asgard is a thing in Norse mythology, it's where the warriors go when they die, to enjoy their eternal reward of fighting and drinking. Evevy day everyone fights and then is resurrected at the end of the day to drink and party. My D&D character would love it!
I saw Epica at Hellfest and next week I'll see them at their Anniversary concert - I feel lucky there are such amazing bands, and singers. Thank you both for a very enjoyable interview.
I was also at Hellfest in front of them,i saw them in Greece 3 weeks later and i will be also at Tilburg next week😊Can't wait...
I had the pleasure of seeing Epica live when they came to Melbourne, such a great band. At the end of the night Simone apologised to the crowd for being a little off her game due to illness (Honestly she was still fantastic, no one noticed anything was wrong and she really didn't have anything to apologise for). Later that week she publicly announced her pregnancy!
Ps. please come back to Australia one day!
Elizabeth, It's great to see you Interviewing Simone. I recently discovered Epica, a great symphonic metal band
Just would like to point out how much I appreciate the fact that Simone has never sang on playback. I love the feeling that the singer/band is at the concert with me and with playback I kinda loose that feeling, so, thank you, Simone ❤️
34:42 - If you are curious, the rock opera that Simone mentioned is Equilibrio of a Dutch musical project Xystus (Equilibrio is from 2008 so created just before Design Your Universe from 2009). You should definitely check it out, especially 'My Song Of Creation'
Yes! I used to be SO in love with that song during my high school years! Simone has always been my role model n. 1!
Thank you, Elizabeth and Simone, for this Amazing Tea Time Interview!!! 💙
All of us that love Epica should send flowers to that teacher that pushed Simone into singing lessons 🙏♥️
Imagine a world where Simone hadn't become a singer 😮
I know, right? She could have been a model or something, but what a waste that would be.
When i bought the divine conspiracy album, i was so excited bc i didn't even know what kind of music it was. When i realised it - i fell in love.
Simone is fantastic!
I've tickets for the anniversary show, and desperately hoping our travel goes ok. If it's even close to the 10th anniversary show it will be the experience of a lifetime
See you in 013 next weekend! I hope Epica brings the 20th anniversary show to us on bluray/dvd too, so it is ours FOREVER AND EVER!
I've been dreaming so hard for this to happen! I can't believe you're going to interview Simone! Thank you for doing these interviews.
Epica got me through my most difficult times, hearing Simone's beautiful voice melted all the negativity away even if just for a moment.
Symphonic metal is wonderful I'm 64 and have lived through the British invasion of the 60s and 70s then here in America things started to flatten out through the 80s and 90s to me it's been a very long time since new music excited or just plain blown me away. But since discovering symphonic metal I'm proud to be here for the European invasion
OMG This is the interview I've been waiting for 😲😍🥳. Elizabeth's interviews are some of the best I've seen (if not the best).
OMG!!!!! Im so excited for this one! Simone is one of my favorite (not only metal) singers ever!🤘🏼
Simone Simons is A Beautiful, Wonderful & Amazing Talented Woman And Soul
Love You Simone
I saw epica play 3 times, two of those on small local festivals as a photographer. (2005) . From what I remember the singer (Simone) was really kind and engaging with all. Looking forward to yet again a great tea-time
This interview was just breathtaking, I just listen to the end cause I cannnot stop hearing you two... I just realized that it was 2 hours long!!!
Dutch genetics are on a different level
Honestly, I swear like half of the great symphonic singers are from there, not to mention they’re all drop dead gorgeous
@@evilemuempire9550simone and sharon bro ❤
Vikings... 😉
@@Mesut_DURMUSthe Dutch aren't viking related... at least not more than the French or English are..
@@Mesut_DURMUS Vikings are from Norway though.....
I love Simone. She is one of my favorite singers so I am very excited for this. Thanks for bringing this interview to us!
I’m so happy to see this interview, and not just because Simone is such an amazing vocalist. I met Simone with the rest of Epica backstage in 2010 and she is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Knowing how many vocalists in rock/metal have massive egos, this was great to see.
I've seen them four times in Denver since 2011. The first time I saw them, my girlfriend at the time asked to meet Simone, which was something I'd never do myself, but Mark said he'd go ask her to come say hi. She obliged and took pics with us.
The next time I saw them, I was with a different girl and after the show Mark was again walking about out. When I spotted him and walked up to say hi, he said to me "you have a kiss on your cheek!" My girlfriend had kissed me and her lipstick was quite brightly visible.
The next time I saw them, that girlfriend had become my wife, and we waited after the show to see if Mark would be around. We didn't spot him that time-instead, he saw us first and said hi to us. We didn't get to talk for more than a few minutes before a bunch of people started asking for photos.
They're playing a much larger venue than those previous shows in Denver this month , so I don't expect my wife and I will get to talk to Mark again. But he'll know we're there because I'm getting us right up to the stage no matter what it takes.
@@reshpeck I've been two 2 Epica shows, never met any of the band members, but I had a brief email correspondence with Mark about religion and philosophy in 2007.
@@Sarcasticron I wonder how his views have evolved since then. He's clearly a deep and introspective thinker
@@reshpeck Good question. I don’t know how Mark's thoughts on this subject have evolved, but I'm pretty sure they have. The early albums have a lot of anti-religion songs, but I remember in an interview (about The Holographic Principle, I believe) Simone alluded to Mark's faith, contrasting it with herself as more of a skeptical thinker.
@@Sarcasticron You read my mind. I don't think he was ever an atheist by any means but certainly critical of religion, and more power to him. But he definitely seems to have embraced a more formal structure to his spirituality, and I think that's great.
The most anticipated interview yet! And possibly ever! Can’t wait! I love Simone
I think that Epica take the symphonic metal to a higher stage. Simone is always lovely.
You forget Nightwish, hihi 🤗But you are right, this two Bands create her own Genre
🤘
@@ralfmeyer9086 absolutely. But Epica was created in 2002 and Nightwish in 1996. Epica was the modern band, bringing symphonic metal. For Nightwish I like more when Tarja sang with the band, with all the respect.
@@EvisMucaTvp oh no ,i totally not agree with you. The time with Tarja, ok. But today Nightwish is SYNPHONIC Metal . Hear Human. :!!:Nature .But only my opinon (i have only little problems with Tarja Minions).
OMFG! Simone! should be illegal to miss this conversation
Simone is so beautiful and talented!!
17:35 Simone talking about doing her professional job with her baby on her hip. THIS IS SO GOOD. Work-life balance shouldn't exist. Childeren should look at their mothers perform (in all kinds of jobs) and be amazed and inspired by their skills.
Simone is one of the best!
What an incredible singer Simone is. And seems like a lovely person also 😊
She was very kind when I met her. Gave me two free tickets to a show when I told her I had to miss an Epica concert!
First Arjen Lucassen, then Joakim and Alissa. And now Simone. A "Tea time with Floor" is coming closer and closer! İ can feel it :) (Past 3 interviews was just so good. İ'm sure Simone will be so good too.)
Yes please 🥰
She has already refused, don't get your hopes up.
@@luisnunes3863 awwwwww how did you find out Floor refused an interview with Elizabeth? :( Did Elizabeth post it somewhere?
@@astridpinel2789 She either said it in live chat on a premiére or in response to a comment. Don't ask me wich... It was months ago.
@@luisnunes3863 that's so sad thank you for the info :/ tea time with floor would have been amazing ... At least we got Simone! I love Simone she's my favorite !
Another fantastic interview! Simone’s voice is unbelievable…the ballad “Tides of Time” brings tears to my eyes during so much of it. She is one of my favorites for a reason and I’m glad you touched on so much about her past and how she became the vocalist she is today. Looked like you enjoyed the talk, as well. Makes the interview more engaging when the interviewer has as much interest as we do out here.
Hopefully you can sit Cristina Scabbia down for a chat at some point.
Very much excited for this!! I love Epica been listening to them for many years. 💜🖤💜 Super excited!!
What an insanely amazing lineup of interviews: Simone from Epica, along with the singers of Archenemy, Lorna Shore, Dream Theater, Kamelot, etc. from previous ones. My mind is exploding lol 😆
We all know where this is leading...
@@juantimer not Floor she declined Elizabeth's request.
@@confuzedpenguin9974 do we know why?

This is going to be excellent! Going to see Epica here in Seattle next month.
Simone was pregnant about 3 months when she did the duets with Floor during the 10th anniversary Epica show. (She probably mentions that.) Epica is been jamming for 20 years this year. Ain't that amazing!

So interesting to hear about her experiences while being pregnant. I know she did a concert with an orchestra and Floor as a guest, and she did it so well, just beautiful!.
Great tea time!
I just saw Simone and Epica last week in Philadelphia. I just became aware of them within the last few months and it was one of the most impressive shows I've seen.
Yeah they slayed this tour, see nothing but positive comments about the shows
Can't wait to see Epica in one month and a day in denver!I was the guy that followed since i was in Uzbekistan
Ooooh! This is super interesting. Trying to learn even more with this!
I've admired Simone (and Epica) since I watched the "We Will Take You With Us" DVD... It was 20 (20 something years ago) and it's funny that since being a child, I loved classical singing. And I always used to sing classically to put my brothers to sleep... So Simone inspired me to get lessons and I grew along with her...but now it got out of my hand!! Simone's voice is still evolving, it's crazy!
Already saw them live this year... 😉
Ohh i have pretty similar story and found them at the same time with Nightwish within temptation after forever and evanescence at 2003 .wow..so happy to read other similar story...my singing classical lessons helped me a lot to sing and therapeutic time with their music and lyrics . So happy to keep listening all of them!(grow up in Argentina at those time) and this year saw Nightwish live at Finland..such a gift time!
simone is so incredibly pretty its almost scary
Omg!!!! Epica!!!!! I have like 4 of their t shirts and 3 of my favorite albums....I went to one of their concerts. Love them...!! 😎😎🫶🤘
I knew this was going to happen one day, but still a wonderful surprise.
She is such a great artist and really nice in person as well. I LOVE her voice and of course Epica is one of my favorite bands. You could always play a game like "Simons says" LOL. Great Interview Elizabeth!
Great interview.
Simone is amazing.
Keep raising the bar.
I really love Simone. She is a beast, vocally. Thank you for this nice interview.
Been a fan since seeing her together with Roy Khan singing The Haunting Somewhere In Time
Those 2 voices together! What great fun live performances they had back in the days!
Yes! Love getting to know a little more about Simone. I get to see Epica at the Ryman, in Nashville, and the Tabernacle, in Atlanta on back-to-back nights in early October.
I love Simone and her voice! She is also so beautiful! My 2023 wish is for more Simone and Floor Jansen duets like Sancta Terra live. Can you imagine both bands, orchestra, and choir together on one stage? All the best to everyone in 2023.
Thanks for that amazing interview, I follow Epica since 2004 and its amazing to see how Simone blossomed and got more and more competent in her talent and element throughout the years, she deserves all the compliments, also Queen of the Ballads, certainly belongs to her! One of your next choices of interview should be Tarja Turunen, a sweetheart and a pioneer when it comes to use of voice and techniques in the metal field mixing classical and operatic voice. Same goes for Floor Jansen! Keep up the amazing work! 🖤
I agree with both. TARJA is the loveliest in interviews.
Wow 🤩 Wow, wow, wow 😍
Don’t know what else to say ☺️🤘
Will be epic(a) 🤗
OMG, thank you Elizabeth! First Alissa, then Simone. Should I bet (and pray) that the next one will be Floor? 🙌
You must to do this with Tarja, please!!!!😍😁
who is fucking tarja?
Hi Elizabeth Simone was 3 months when she sang with Floor on Sancta Terra and then Floor found out what it was like when she sang Oi Jouluyo in 2016 and was 6 months pregnant.
Thank you for this wonderful interview! Wow! It was a pleasure to watch it and I learned a lot from it! You are so exuberant and react so spontaneously - I adore this! Simone is gorgeous and she really is the metal Barbie😍🎶It would be wonderful if you can invite the vocal beast Tarja Turunen cause she is a classically trainer singer who studied Church Music at the Kuopio Academy and Lied Music at Karlsrue Music School. She is very knowledgeable about vocal range and breathing techniques, and she is the Rock Queen who we love too🤘🏻💗🎶
