    I went through almost the exact same issue as you. Am re-sanding again. Can you please elaborate about “waterborne base primer”? Why that kind over what I may get from the professional paint manufacturer? My final paint is a pewter metallic to match my 1999 Silverado. I am doing the hood. I had the tiger stripes just like you the first time, and it came though the final coat, which is why I am redoing it all again.

      Well this waterborne primer minimizes reactions with spray can products , many times if you spray a solvent based product on top of a 1k spray can primer or sealer it has the chance of frying up . That’s why I used that primer but you could use what you like of course. Also to address your tiger stripes have a tighter over lap and make sure you have a wet edge thru and thru , on your last coat lower your pressure and increase distance and apply what’s called a control coat, basically this control coat will allow the Metallica to lay in a more uniform fashion and can minimize metallic muttle. The control coat does not need to be a wet coat.

    Good video! Two important questions...what brand and type of tack cloths do you use? What's your wall Calendar?

      Thank you , I just use a small 30 gallon air compressor , about 6 cfm or so works decent for painting parts or motorcycles

      @@Mechaniclyfe ok would Eastwood 2K Apoxsee primer, aerosol cans, and Eastwood 2K high build urethane primer before painting basecoat. Would that work?

    • @Mechaniclyfe
      @Mechaniclyfe  Год назад

      Yes, but first let me ask is there any body work that needs to be done still? Or is it good

      @@Mechaniclyfe the panels are brand new they are aftermarket, so I’m kind of worried about the pre-primed panels, and was thinking about taking it down to bare metal to seal them, and make sure that is anticorrosion protection on them

    • @Mechaniclyfe
      @Mechaniclyfe  Год назад

      I see well you can also epoxy seal them then follow it up with base and clear

    Good job bro. I’ve been meaning to ask and noticed it in this vid. Pretty sure u just have a 30gal compressor probably 7cfm max. The most of the big guns u use, require more CFM than that. So, do u notice ur guns struggling? Sounded like the compressor was running constant. It looks like at the end of the primer, the gun was starving for air, not struggling with the paint/primer viscosity.

    • @Mechaniclyfe
      @Mechaniclyfe  4 года назад +1

      Exactly right , 30 gal I cant remember the cfm off hand I think it’s close to 6, I struggle mostly with hvlp guns they just require so much more air then some of the others hte and others not so much, but the compressor does kick on quite often.

      Overspray Right on man. I’m in the small compressor club too. I’ve been researching all the low CFM guns out there and that is what I have to resort to purchasing for now. The ANI brand gunZ all seem to use 7.77cfm or less. I will be doing reviews and demos on low CFM guns on my channel for all of us small compressor guys as I acquire new ones.

    yeah, id rather spend the 400.00 they quoted me to have my local collison shop paint the hood. after i spend my time buying all the tools and needed paints and primers. id be close to 200.00-300.00 in price...plus my time and then sanding and cleaning and primer and sanding and cleaning, then painting and cleaning, and clear....well worth the 400 to have the proffesionals do it imo. lol but thank you for showing me how much work is involved and that im 100% not intrested in doing it my self.

      Def not worth it if you don’t already have the tools needed

    1K PRIMER=CHEAP JOB! 2K PRIMER=QUALITY LONG LAST WORKMENSHIP...FAILURE TO SAND EDGES=FUTURE PAINT REPAIRS..FAILURE TO TAKE OFF GLOVES AND HAND FEEL THE AREA=POOR WORKMENSHIP AND FUTURE REPAIRS OR CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS...IF PRIMER IS SLOW COMING OUT OF GUE=TOO SMALL A NOZZLE(1.7+ with 10% THINNING AT 30PSI+)..NOT ALLOWING PROPER FLASH TIME=POOR WORKMENSHIP (CLUMPY SANDPAPER) & FUTURE REPAIRS. HE TRIED TO SPEED DRYING TIME WITH "AIR"..SMH..THE END RESULT HE HAD TO LET IT DRY OVER-NIGHT. SPRAYING 2 COATS OF PRIMER THERE SHOULD BE A 24 HOURS WAIT PERIOD BEFORE SPRAYING ANOTHER COAT OR BASE COATS.

    • @Mechaniclyfe

      1k primer is a waterborne base primer by basf same as glasurit, needs to be air dried in order to dry I’m sure you know that. Most waterborne products must be air dried, there for flash times are different than that of a 2k product. The clumpy paper is due to the primer not fully drying which is stated. I move slowly with the spraygun for more build with the 1k product since it’s not a 2k product. Edges were sanded with a interface pad then gone over it by hand, there were moments where I feel it it my hand, for any imperfections and possible low areas. At this stage the bottom of the hood was already painted so the bottom was covered. Over all the hood came out great and I’m happy with it. Happy holidays
