      1K primer and clear coat sucks, easy to sctrach, dent, bubbles sometimes. It's not the same as 2K, that why body shops use 2K

      How are those flat surfaces harder to do than the vertical surfaces? Less chance of runs. Less chance of uneven thickness. I thought vertical panels were the hardest.

    Good job - the only small tip i would advise is keep a rag with some thinners or turps handy to use on the rag, so you can regularly wipe the spray nozzle of the rattle can as you spray the panels. Often you get a buildup of paint on the nozzle and it will impact the spray pattern or even worse cause a drip onto your fresh paint

      there is a very good reason for that. most of the time rattle cans leave what's called an "orange peel" effect. I'll just about bet (although I'm not a betting man) that between the time he finished up inside and took it outside he did a wet sand then compound then polish then waxed it, to make it look like that. now, of course, that means that more than likely there was a 2 to 4 week time span in between finishing up inside and taking it outside.

      @@DonaldMelton Not necessarily, when sprayed on as lightly as it was but at the right distance, 2K paint flattens itself out and provides quite a good gloss. More so with spray cans than with a gun though. Not sure why but that's just how it be

      The original paint isn’t his fault. I have not seen a Santa Fe from that time (I have a 04) that doesn’t have that type of damage. The point is decent preparation with less than ideal material can yield a good result. 10 or 15 years, maybe not but he isn’t claiming that.

      @@spliteone base coat metalics don't have hardener and are 50% by volume thinners, the same solvents used in acrylic lacquer. Most failed paint is more to do with incorrect preparation than anything else. When 2k urethanes first came out a lot of professionals continued to use 1k primers with no problems whatsoever.

The best filler spray is Chrome spray paint. excellent for filling in scratches and paint that has reacted with the new paint. The Chrome covers thickly and fills, as important no runs. Then stray over the top with your colour paint.

      Fumes and paint fumes can easily leach through regular particle masks not made for it, your skin, and even your eyeballs.
      Get a gas mask with facial covering , or a 3m mask with rated cartridges and adequate goggles, also a painting suit from the hardware store that's rated for the materials you are using .

    I did this on my 66 mustang years ago, aldo did the dash. Looked good. But recently for my pontiac g5 gt I just sanded, cleaned, and then vinyl wrapped the hood, grill, roof, and trunk top, and spoiler top. Looks darn good, and cost me about $75 in materials and was pretty quick to install. Less than an hour for the hood as an example. Both are good, inexpensive alternatives to getting a pro job done especially on an older car.

      I don't know if he said, but I'm guessing it was about $100 (US) worth of paint. The primer and clear would be a bit less since they're assembly-line produced, but the Hyundai can was likely between $45 and $70 since it was a special mix.
      Still, awesome job, and it beats either living with the crap, or paying even more to have it done.

      I am amazed that so little did so much. I am in-process on my 96 Jeep's roof, and I have burned up 6 cans of Dupli-Color and 6 cans of clear coat and now going through the buffing and polishing phase, because I got nothing near that that nice icy finish after the 72-hour cure. Smooth areas and rough areas [to the touch].

    • @christopherkelley773
      @christopherkelley773 5 лет назад

      Steve. I would buy a case (12 cans) of paint and a case of clear cost just to have it if you find you need it. And you might have to stop and sand away some of your work because you are learning. Nothing worse than having to run to the local auto store hoping they might have your color - which they usually don't - all while you last coat is drying longer than the instructions demand.

    I would degrease the panel after washing and before sanding. Oddly enough degreasing can cause fish-eye. BTW, the larger the sanding block, the fewer low spots you'll end up with. A small block tends to "ride" into the contours, while a larger block doesn't. The second coat of clear should be applied at a right angle to the first coat rather than following along your previous spray pattern.
