I replaced my computer with the M2 iPad Pro for a week

- I used the M2 iPad Pro as my sole work machine for almost an entire week. I used it to write articles for XDA Developers, take work calls, write and send emails, and of course, edit this video, all entirely on the iPad Pro with M2 silicon.

This is one of the best channels with real world reviews. And i think if your work apps are supported, it can actually replace your pc
Thank you!
Also considering replacing laptops w/ tablets. For light use it seems tablets/pads got the advantage.
You’re almost there Ben! Hopefully you get to the place where you realize you don’t actually need a MacBook anymore. And now Final Cut for iPad allows editing through a flash drive or portable hard drive.
I have both devices as well. Love the ability to choose. As the MacBook can do everything, I prefer the little extra weight. But the iPad is a great option as well. The combo is great. Thanks for the test Ben!
I just looked up the price of a iPad M2 pro for a descent laptop replacement and Apple told me that a iPad pro 12.9" 1TB solution and magic keyboard would set me back €2780 (= +/ $3050).
Well, I don't think I have to explain anyone that this would be ridiculous to even think about.
Maybe in your country but the iPad pro 12.9 1tb maxes out at $1799 or $2100 w the magic keyboard in the US. It might be cheaper for you to import it at that price
And do you really need 1tb , you can cut costs like anything
@@woofiooxxto get the 16g of RAM you need to upgrade to the 1TB version
@@peraman2022iPadOS does not need 16GB…
@@VenemiesTech True , just like MacOS doesn’t need that much either, but the headroom is sure nice to have.
Thanks for an honest review Ben!! It's really great to see tablets really take place as a main device. I wonder if in the next 8 years if we'll still have the macbook as we know it
your review is not flashy or overproduced. They just pop up with in my feed with dope content. Thanks
Thank you
The M1 was my first iPad Pro. Then I upgraded to the M2. It’s an amazing computer and with Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve on iPad Pro, it’s replaced my MacBook Air for about 90% of my work. I barely use my MacBook lately.
The process of becoming a functional work machine for the vast majority of cases has begun back in 2018 me thinks with the iPad Pro 2018. But from 2015 we were thinking that Apple should switch from iPad OS to MacOS especially after 2018 model.. It turns out that Apple didn't need to do that, a much refined iPad OS and apps like Final Cut Pro latest versions with a SoC like M1 or M2 did the job just fine..
There's no machine with the perf/watt consumption of Apple laptops/tablets that is a given, despite me having left the ecosystem last year for a 2 in 1 Rog Flow 2023.
Nice work Ben as always
Excellent video.
I’m an AV tech in an IT department. I’ve replaced my laptop with an iPad. My co-worker believe me to be insane, but they are stuck in the 1990s with their laptops.
As ever mate great in depth video thanks 🤔😎❤️
exellent content. Wouldn't surface pro 9 i7 be a better alternative?? have you tested it?? what do you think?
I use UpNote writing software for everything from song lyrics and idea scraps to long-form writing. It’s one of the few programs of its type that syncs almost instantly with my Windows desktop version of the program. So my iPad is my mobile writer and when I get back to the luxury of a 32 inch screen and mechanical keyboard in PC world, its all there waiting for me. It feels like magic when you’re a multi-plattform user and don’t want to be chained to Apple’s Ecosystem exclusively.
So, productivity use case wise, the iPad is a great mobile device as long as you can sync your work with a computer (Mac or PC). Of course, if you have all your devices in Apple world (and are happy with the occasional limitations of that), you’re set.
Do you have to import to edit video, or can you just have dongle connect and edit that way, similar to Mac book?
hi. which is the fastest programme to video edit and export currently? davinchi , lumafusion or final cut pro?
What about handling such things on z fold 5 via luma fusion? (:
Which storage configuration did you pick?
Ben any chance you'll be reviewing the new ZTE Nubia Z50S Pro anytime soon? Would love your thoughts on that phone.
I have found that predictive text and corrections are much better on iPad OS 17 beta. It seems Apple is improving AI/ML making for a great typing experience. It takes a little while to get used to seeing the word you are typing appear in full and for you to type space and move on to the next word, but it soon saves time.
Also, I just typed on my iPad, copied the paragraph, and pasted it on my Mac! This has been great for the ecosystem for 10+ years and why I moved over to Apple. Windows/Android fans will say they can do this as well, but it only has been in the last couple of years that has been available and it is still not as refined or as slick as Apple does as it is all part of the OS rather than having to install modules to get that functionality.
Of course, the iPad is still not perfect and although it can replace a laptop for some, not everyone. My use is 90% iPad and 10% laptop. That is ever-increasing for the iPad.
As good as the Galaxy Tab and OneUI, the accessory support is not good as the iPad. For example, I am a prolific typist, so having a great keyboard is a priority, and the iPad has the best, as well as numerous alternatives. The Tab S8+ keyboard is a floppy mess and is not even backlit.
With Stage Manager, even that old chestnut of multitasking cannot be rolled out to downgrade the perceived value of the iPadOS experience.
Finally, the performance of the iPad M2 is a steep gradient higher than the current Android rivals making it the clear de facto choice for niche pro-power users.
Ben i know that on apple everything just works but the file sync could be done on pc with a onedrive or google drive on the pc ( thats what i currently do and no issues at all) and excellent video as always
I cant speak for Microsoft or windows but I don't think Google drive can automatically upload files for me to the cloud. I'd have to manually upload the files to google drive first before I can find it elsewhere. My point is any file on my mac desktop homescreen is automatically on icloud drive I didn't have to do any action to upload myself. The point is I didn't realize I needed the file until I was outside without the Mac but I was able to get it on iPad
Yeah OneDrive has the same functionality when saving to the desktop.
OneDrive and Google Drive can do a lot of what iCloud can do, but what I guess is iCloud has no setup, you buy the devices and it's all linked and synced, not just files too, it carries your wifi logins (you logged in on one device, passwords automatically synced in iCloud), airpods pairing (same deal, pair one device, pairing synced to other devices), keychain sync, Apple Pay authentication across older devices (Macbooks without secure enclave), Universal control and Sidecar, it carries your homekit surveillance footage (free with higher iCloud tier and home hub), private relay (their version of anonymous browsing until you sign in on google search) and if you have a 2TB iCloud plan, your Mac on wifi can almost act like a 2TB machine even if it is only 256gb or 512gb, offload older larger files to cloud, same deal with iPhones or iPads, most of the photos and videos (esp pro res) can be offloaded, leaving just a low res preview on device.
Adobe has their own Cloud too, good to offload their extra large psd, helping laptops ssd take a breather. Convinced that if you are using a Chromebook with google drive a lot of what iCloud does will apply. Or maybe Huawei Harmony ecosystem. Maybe Samsung with Onedrive, what happened to Samsung cloud btw, used to have that.
6:00 You can’t airdrop it?
Hi Ben, did you buy the wifi+cellular or just the wifi version?
Nice😊
Don't let the negative comments bother you Ben! You don't owe them an explanation :)
What about lumafusion which you is installed in all new s9 ultra? won't it make a better choice with a bigger canvas and bypass the hot mess that is apple's file manager, built-in sd cad slot, and high-speed hard drive read/write thru USB C
I tried, I just prefer final cut pro more and the M2 is way more powerful than snapdragon 8 gen 2 at handling multiple streams of 4k videos
You mention that weight is the priority but the Ipad 12.9 M2 with magic keyboard is around 3.3 pounds and around $1500 but for $400 less you could get an M2 Macbook air 13 ( same foot print as Ipad 12.9 but lower weight at 2.7 pounds and cheaper), appreciate you would have to hotspot a Macbook air whereas the Ipad has internet connectivity. For size and price (and same spec) the Macbook air1 13 surely is the best option for 'real' work rather than tablet apps?
Macbook Air does not have mini LED and no touchscreen, so Final Cut Pro, might just be better on iPads with pencil.
My windows laptop syncs all the files in desktop and documents automatically. I just need to have the onedrive apps installed in my phones or tablets. I still have the convenience without tied to one ecosystem.
Hey that's great. It's ok to have more options
Same with "iCloud for Windows". All your iCloud data can easily be accessed. If you also have an Android device, there are apps for that or I just use the web browser to access iCloud via a shortcut.
I agree. Apple for computers and iPads, Android for phones.
Definetly correct i have the s22 ultra and am about to buy the ipad 12.9 because the galaxy tab doesnt even compare
I’m on the fence to make this my main “laptop” for the next couple years. I’m military and in college so portability is perfect. Mixed with apps for entertainment. What you think ?
I thinktl the iPad can definitely do it unless you deal with a lot of files like downloading files and then reuploading, etc, or if you need to have 3-4 windows opened at all times
do another video to show the difference in difficulty compared to using an android tablet for this same purpose.
What iPad do you recommend and what iPhone should I upgrade to from the iPhone 12
I think ipad air is good enough for most people but if you wanna do graphics work or editing videos then M2 iPad pro
@@bensgadgetreviews I have the new iPad Air but my daughter loves it so I gave it to her so I want another iPad
We're constantly impressed by Apple's vision! Now with the announcement of iPhone 15's USB-C port, we're keen to be compatible with even more devices.
Wow! Can you do this review to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra too?
I will. I think tab S9 is very capable. But I don't think it can edit videos for me as easily as the iPad. M2 is way more powerful than the snapdragon chip.
@@bensgadgetreviews thank you! Will wait on that review.
Ben is super underrated 👍
Super underrated = normal rated? 😂😂😂
Just kidding. Totally agree with you.
Indeed
Ben for the utubers president!! Cool review!! Salute from Russia !!
do you have 1tb storage on your ipad pro?
Yes
I really like the animations on the iPad. On the iphones I just feel that the animations are somewhat overdone and are too slow for a phone
Ideal for video editors, and web apps, that's were it stops and that's why 70 percent of the population will have a windows laptop, which one is the best, delivering power, battery, pen support, good Webcam and of course gaming with desktop and web functionality, there's many but one is ideal for me right now- flow x16
Tried iPad fcp, LumaFusion is light years ahead of FCP
Perhaps? I like Lumafusion alot too
I have been using my iPad Pro for pretty much everything phone wise I use iPhone rather than android as everything that I have on my iPad is on my iPhone so I don’t have to send all my stuff from my iPad to an android phone
iPadOS makes sense for Bionic-powered iPad, but it makes absolutely no sense to Silicon-powered iPad. All the desktop-grade computing power, yet bogged down on what is basically a modern repeat of Windows RT and Windows S Mode. Used to own the M1 iPad Pro before, never again. Sold it for my current Microsoft Surface Pro 8 and never looked back.
(waits for the nubia z50s pro review)
Bro is using MacBook for iPad’s external keyboard this is called richness 💸
that used to be my setup of choice until....came the 15 air with its form factor....MUCH better OS, and unmatchable keyboard and trackpad :( since then not much ipading
5:06 There is a like $2 solution for it and does not look dumb. God.
I've said it for years, the iPhone is the weakest element of the ecosystem, if they pushed it a bit harder, I'd be all in on Apple. But at the very least, I need to at least be able to truly multitask on the Max sized devices. Maybe next year. Dope vid Ben!
It's main device for me because you can call to someone.
Apple is crass
Sucks even apple wont give proper dev tools for ipados. It has an M2 but it can't run full xcode like even less powerful macs do? Come on now, this is bs...
Why do youtubers always review as if everyone watching is editing videos. smh..
iPads are too limiting for my use.
I feel like the ipad pro with the keyboard is pretty heavy😂
It is. But lighter than MacBook still lol
Your wallet is a lot lighter though 🤣🤣
@@hermanstokbroodI don't mind, I can pay for the best tech
@@bensgadgetreviews No it isnt, the macbook air m2 13 inch is lighter by around 300grams than Ipad pro M2 12.9 and magic keyboard, similar footprint too.
@@bensgadgetreviews Me too. But I don't have to be a youtuber to buy it. 😁
Or just use a Macbook Air: cheaper, more versatile, fully fledged apps, longer battery life, better OS and it is just as light and portable. I dont understand this obsession with trying to use a tablet as a laptop... then why not use a laptop?
Because there are people that like it? And it doesn't need to make sense? It's good to have diversity, people are different and have different priorities 🙆 some like the experience with the apple pencil, just an example 🤗
Because if I can have one device that can be for play and work it's easier? If I'm traveling I may wanna mindlessly scroll through Instagram or watch Netflix on a screen bigger than phone? What about the stylus? I never said anyone should buy both or one over the other I'm just talking about my experiences.
Another youtuber who talks about how he uses an iPad for "work", while all he does is video processing / browser / and video calls. 😂
That is my work though foo, what you want me to do, pretend I handle excel sheets for a law firm? Write code for Amazon?
@@bensgadgetreviews It's the same as many RUclipsrs only review MacBooks for work tasks like photo and video editing, while most people don't, it's much more important to know if programs from Microsoft or 3D rendering or After Effects for example will work. iPad is the same story, it is banal to make a presentation on this device is much less convenient than on a laptop. In any case, 99% of real work is done on Windows devices, no one designs a new high-speed train or nuclear power plant on an iPad or MacBook. The iPad is a device for kids, artists and bloggers, and nothing more.
@Ayanamka17 And that's why this is a video about HIS experience with the work that HE has. Everyone understands that an iPad Pro can't 100% replace a laptop, which has plenty more apps and more multitasking capabilities. He is just showing how an iPad can replace a MacBook for his workflow (which actually a lot of people share).
😂😂😂 you cannot replace a computer for an iPad iPad cannot do everything on the iPad
I literally didn't for six days and did all my work. Have you considered everyone has different types of work tasks?
@@bensgadgetreviews still can’t replace a computer no mater what
I watched the video all the way up until you showed that android phone and then I couldn’t take you seriously any more.
