- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- It is an amazing time to be a Mustang enthusiast. Despite the rest of the muscle cars leaving the playground, the Mustang comes out swinging. And in purchasing your new Mustang, the decision between manual and automatic has never been more difficult. Gone are the days of when a manual transmission-equipped car would put bus lengths on an old school-automatic overdrive car. Now-a-days, it's actually quite the opposite! Watch along where I break it down on which transmission is the right choice for you in your 2024 S650 (or earlier S550) Mustang!

I went with the manual on my 2024 GT. I’ve always had automatic, and I’ve driven mustangs for years. But I was finally at a point in life where I could basically get any Mustang I wanted, and I actually did order the Dark Horse but then changed my mind to GT because I really wanted red seats and no vinyl decals. And despite living in SoCal where traffic often sucks, I wanted the manual to really get the full experience. I don’t race and I’m never going to need to go extremely fast on the freeways here, so the faster auto isn’t important to me. I have zero regrets about my transmission choice. I have a blast driving every day in an awesome car that sounds incredible, and even more so because it’s a manual and has active exhaust.
Went manual this time and no regrets
I prefer manual but since I commute in Chicago it’s more convenient got me to have the auto. The only issue I have with the auto is sometimes it doesn’t know what gear it wants to be in.
Smart man! Glad you’re enjoying it on the right suspension too 😄

Same here
I'm just not a fan of the MT-82. If the the GT came with a TREMEC, it would be a much harder decision between the auto and manual for me.
Manual is for me....Even though auto boxes are getting very impressive and in some situations like traffic, they are a huge plus but, I still prefer the engagement of the manual knowing you are in total control....Great overview...
The 10 speed is quicker, but I'm not a racecar driver.I enjoy driving and the manual transmission is what gives me the most enjoyment.
I'm a Purist! Nothing like rowing thru the gears. First car was a '67 Mustang @16 yrs old.
Love it! 289? 67/68 is my favorite classic body style!
For me, I'm looking at the Auto mainly because of the where I live in. The metro Detroit area is so congested and 99% of my driving is city. We have a manual GTI for when I get the urge to "be one with the car"...I think the new autos are "more" engaging than the past so it's a smaller trade-off.
I agree, I'm metro Detroit and I want a manual but it's so impractical. Plus, my wife can't drive a manual.
Muscle car = Manual transmission
I have my Mustang GT 2018 and I Love it
Heck yeah!
Good information Chris! I came out of a 350R which I tracked and I never thought I would enjoy driving an automatic. I have a 2023 A10 Mach 1 with the handling package and it flies around Willow Springs. Upshifting, downshifting, it always keeps you in the right gear. I did back to back sessions without any overheating problems. They are both awesome cars!
The cooling on the A10 Mach 1s is definitely improved over a standard GT! I was happy to see they beefed it up and offered the additional cooling for those that wanted autos. I’m happy to hear you’re enjoying it! Handling Pack cars are no joke!
Awesome sports cars! 💯
1+ to the Mach1 with A10. I have one (non handling pack) and it’s an awesome car.
Please tell me you didn’t sell the 350R😢
I agree that the purest will love the 6 spd manual. I was born the year the Mustang was introduced so, at 60 yrs old, I wanted the GT Premium that I bought with the 6 spd. I had an '07 GT convertible 5 spd but, regrettably let it go after 6yrs and 189k miles. Best car I ever owned........ Until now. For me, it's not about the speed, it's about the FUN!
I just want speed, went 10spd.
In my opinion, adding huge power to a manual Mustang is the safer option. The 10R80 is junk at power levels over 700whp. I'm sure a few factory freaks can handle it, but it is a seriously flawed transmission, and it's easier to build the MT82 to handle that power than build the 10R80 to handle that power.
Great info
Glad it was helpful!
Auto for me! Love my 24 GT Premium convertible
My next might wind up being an automatic. One positive note, but kind of twisted, this car due to it's slow manual trans will keep me from street racing which is a good thing considering how congested my area is. I refuse to race on highways with drivers who make random unexpected turns, pedestrians and police.
Less problems mechanically with a stick than a dct
Beautiful sports cars! 💯 Have '24 Dark Horse 🐎 on order. -NY
Have you gotten a delivery date yet? Or any sort of update from Ford of that matter?
I am from Chile, I have a GT 2021 automatic and now I want to buy a GT 2024 manual. The big problem is that they do not arrive in my country in this version and you can only buy automatic ones. I no longer have any hope of having a manual.
Team 10 speed 24 GT and I’m cool with it!
Love it. It’s nice in the 24s, isn’t it?!
@@therealcervenkaman I love it!
You hit everything on the nail!
My preference is to go faster.
It did use to be a thing where people judge you for not driving manual.
These cars progress and now it is about who is quicker off the line, track and drag and Mexico.
The bar is really close!
If you want to go fast in a straight line, then as Dodge says, NEVER LIFT. Which brings me to my point - the Mustang is made for a manual. If I wanted a fast auto where I could pull it up to the tree and hammer down on green - give me the HEMI every time. It just screams drag racing. Not the Mustang.
The auto are great, but I still like changing my on gears in fun cars.
Old school here
I know how to drive a manual, but I find it annoying. So I never ever bought one. My s650 gt fully loaded 110% have the 10 speed. I played with the paddles a little bit. It's a little more enjoyable than stick
Manual to me for sure.
looking at getting a new mustang, want go manual but i just learned how to drive manual, will also be my first manual, for this reason im debating auto to get used to having ALOT more car, going from a 2015 civic coupe
also not a fan of the manual trans in it, if i came with the tremec like the darkhorse id pick it all day
The MT-82 isn’t terrible. And with the right aftermarket shifter, it can be a pretty great combo. As long as you’re smart behind the wheel, there’s nothing wrong with learning the manual on the Mustang. Just have to be a responsible driver 😄
If not for daily gridlock driving going to work I'd have a manual every time I could. They're more fun. Traffic and a bad left knee says auto for me which I'm plenty happy with. paddles are fun too! I still drive my tractor when I feel like manual shifting...lol
Nothing wrong with that! Enjoy!
Hello Chris ,
Do you see any changes in the 2025 dark Hose ,
I like the automatic better then the manual .
on long distance road trips !'
Even though I know how to drive a manual
shift car .
Have a good July 4th ,

Great content chris! I just bought a 2024 gt pp with the a10. So far i love it but i havent had a chance to track or autox it yet. Whats been your experiance. Is there any speed advantage to the a10 on the track and in autox?? I know in my previous 2019 pp1 manual i found myself going too fast for first but to slow for second at alot of events and im hoping i can resolve that with the a10.
Congrats! For autocross, the A10 has gotten a ton of improvement. I was super impressed with the EcoBoost A10 in that environment. But I’d still choose the manual hands down to be 100% competitive in an autocross setting. As for track, take your pick. It’s tuned very well for track use now, and the Dark Horse has sufficient cooling for the A10 for most drivers. Hope that helps!
My biggest issue with the S650 is that I HATE that rear end. My second issue with it is that if you don't want the Active Exhaust, you don't get the quad Exhaust. I hate how they make you choose.
I think the 650 is Not a good car either, I am happier w/ my 2020 mustang GT and I had the cash to buy a S650 but still chose a 2020 !!! ;)
It's crazy to me because I have a 2017 Manual and it feels faster than a 12 but it is a low 12 the way I drive her.. But anyway they feel like an 11 second to me but it is what it is.. I find most PPL today can't even drive a manual and that is the really sad part about it all.. I think the Tech and advancement in the auto DCT's are great but it's making it so no one will want manuals at all.. Like you when i was a kid all we drove were manual's because of how bad the auto's were..
100%! There’s still an art to it. No matter how many features you add to a manual, it still requires a little bit of skill to drive well/fast.
Do you have a tune on your 17? My 11 GT honestly felt quicker than my 15 did. Then again, it was tuned.
I love sticks but the automatic is more playful. especially around turns and allows for more control keeping two hands on the steering wheel
100% manual guy here, just feel much more connected to my Bullitt.
When it comes to Bullitt, Mach 1 and GT350 we use the Tremec trans vs the MT82 on the standards GT.. it’s a totally different world, if I was gonna get a GT I would consider the 10 speed
@@TopAliGithe s550 bullitt never had the tremec. It had the mt-82 trans. It’s on ford specs sheet my guy…
real talk...... when is 1 second considerably quicker??? On perfect track conditions and settings and equal drivers.... a lot goes into it. There is always someone "quicker" always someone that has managed to get more horsepower!!! I think get what "you" can afford and what you like. IMO a real driving enthusiast and a true sports car experience leans towards a manual! Just my opinion. You will never be content if your worried about someone being a second quicker or producing more horespower. Its an endless cycle
Is that even a question for Mustang? Manual all the way, especially if it's Tremec.
*Promo sm* 👏
I drive a 2018 GT 10Speed and this sucks. Never ever.
So wack they made the manual a higher tier option
They just removed it from EcoBoosts. Which I’m upset about too. The auto is still pretty darn good on the 2024 Eco, though!
@@therealcervenka yeah except I have an older auto mustang that I've been wanting to upgrade and get a manual. Now they've priced me out...
