    One thing is missing in many of the comments about Johnson ducking Langford and supposedly being oddly racist himself in defending his title. It was probably not a racial issue at all so much as a purely economic one. There would have been little money in defending against black men like Jeanette, McVey, Langford, Martin, Childs etc. Johnson had defeated all (Jeanette and McVey any times). Who would pay to see him do so yet again? The paying public certainly clamored to see Johnson dethroned, but in losing to another black man they would only be back in square one again. Why pay to see a fight which would not solve the racial situation? These aforementioned black contenders were probably the best in the sport at the time, but Johnson had already proven himself (at least to himself) against them. Admittedly, they were all still dangerous, so why risk the title with nothing to prove and even less to gain?
    As a side note the white fighters of that era were not as 100% racially discriminatory as is now commonly believed. They did fight black opponents from time to time. They had no problem fighting ones who they thought they could beat. The only ones that they had any scruples fighting were GOOD black fighters. Remember, Burns avoided Johnson as long as he could, but here the money may have made it worth it.
    So it appears that Johnson also enforced the color line as champ, as his white predecessors did. And for the same reasons. More profitable and less risky all around.

      Johnson actually did fight Sam Langford in 1906 and won by decision in the 15th round. So it's hard to imagine that the color line was the reason he didn't allow a rematch. It's more likely the risk outweighed the reward, like you mentioned.

    • @devilface97
      @devilface97 Год назад

      Mcvey was fresh out his teens fighting johnson, sam had little heavyweight experience, and jenneate was young as well. Those three where without a doubt better and the most deserving challengers of a shot. Johnson declined mcvey in paris then boxed battling jim the same month. The money fell through for johnson to fight mcvey then the winner defend against sam in Australia because they(general public) wanted a white champion. Jess willard only got his shot after sam licked the guy ahead of him and still didnt get a shot.
      Yes Johnson avoided the top 3 black heavyweights.
      No he did not draw the color line as battling jim was black. He declined more money for a mcvey defense, a mcvey now in his mid 20s and more seasoned.
      Yes the world was so racist at the time it made it VERY easy for johnson to decline hard fights and say "if I might lose I might as well get the most out of it".

    Didn't know Flynn was such a dirty fighter

  • @crawlFace
    @crawlFace 9 лет назад +5

    There were some nasty punches exchanged in the clinch. Johnson did a lot of work in the clinch even though Flynn was always coming in and initiating it. If Flynn is going to relentlessly push his way inside he should have been prepared for all the holding and dirty work that comes along with it. The ref was letting them fight inside and not breaking it up quickly so Flynn should have adjusted and been more vicious with punches instead of his head. I thought this was to Flynn's advantage but Johnson had too much control during any exchange.
    I thought Flynn had good defense; he got his hands up high and blocked shots and he consistently got inside on Johnson. The only problem is Flynn didn't actually box much in this fight; he didn't work his punches or set anything up. Flynn needed to do some things on the way to getting inside on Johnson, especially because Johnson was doing those extra things, like jabbing. In the end, Flynn was too predictable here, but he certainly was a tank.

    Jack had already fought Flynn and knocked him out. Wow They forgot to put the quit in this guy. Flynn is obviously a devil for punsihment or very brave bc he is half the size of Johnson. Flynn is fighting dirty bc he is frustrated by JJ's great defense. But this is an example JJ's and his promoters genius. He was often in the ring with men half his size and or a old and rusty Jim Jeffries. The white audiences went crazy when Jack manhandled his smaller opponents. But these fights sold tremendously. My understanding is (please correct me if I am wrong) that Jack Johnson was wealthly to his dying day in the 1940's bc of the money he made while champion.

    • @charleybarley939
      @charleybarley939 3 года назад +2

      And the betting was crazy. All the whites would bet magnificent sums on the white fighter, while blacks would put all their money on Johnson. So Johnson won huge payouts for African-Americans while all the whites lost their wallets. But this is never brought up in the documentaries.

I'm no stranger to what Johnson did or didn't do during his tenure as champ but let's face it: What kind of shot would Joe Louis have had if Johnson didn't open the door for every other future hvywt champ of color? But of you were offended by my use of the term "White America", it was referenced to the era of the early 1900's. Unless of course, you feel compelled to protect the integrity of White America from that era. Johnson was at a different skill level,Flynn's only option was to butt & shout racial epitaphs

  • @jperez9805

Double standard motivated by ignorant racial hatred at the time? Of course. So what's the problem with my post?

Afraid to muddy the waters, they had the proverbial "thumb print" on Louis's forehead. Corbett to my knowledge was not a holder. Nor does the existing film of him suggest that. I am of the belief Johnson's peronsality had a lot to do with the attitude the public directed to him. Example, Joe Gans was a black champion was highly respected in America. The newspapers raved at his skill and genius. Interestingly enough he too was married to a white woman. So why the double standard? Guess racism begins at 170'bs plus.

      Can you imagine Foreman vs Johnson? I don't think it would last two rounds.
      Joe Frazier would have mauled him to death.

      You've got to remember that fights in those days were often scheduled for 45 rounds. They had to box at a slower pace if they were going to go that far. Also training methods and nutrition today are far in advance of what they were then.

      No , for the simple reason , johnson would be using modern tactics and if he was beaten , he would certainly not be destroyed .

      Sam Sum If you're gonna bring him back from the dead&give him modern training, he wouldn't be the old Jack Johnson anymore, his style wouldn't be the same, you'd have him in name only. He drank,smoked cigars& was sporadic in training...may as well give him a light saber or cool super power too. Haha
