@thomas rinerI cannot argue that. Actually awesome is not powerful enough word for our great Lord and Savior, words could never describe the magnificence of The Creator of everything.
One thing is missing in many of the comments about Johnson ducking Langford and supposedly being oddly racist himself in defending his title. It was probably not a racial issue at all so much as a purely economic one. There would have been little money in defending against black men like Jeanette, McVey, Langford, Martin, Childs etc. Johnson had defeated all (Jeanette and McVey any times). Who would pay to see him do so yet again? The paying public certainly clamored to see Johnson dethroned, but in losing to another black man they would only be back in square one again. Why pay to see a fight which would not solve the racial situation? These aforementioned black contenders were probably the best in the sport at the time, but Johnson had already proven himself (at least to himself) against them. Admittedly, they were all still dangerous, so why risk the title with nothing to prove and even less to gain? As a side note the white fighters of that era were not as 100% racially discriminatory as is now commonly believed. They did fight black opponents from time to time. They had no problem fighting ones who they thought they could beat. The only ones that they had any scruples fighting were GOOD black fighters. Remember, Burns avoided Johnson as long as he could, but here the money may have made it worth it. So it appears that Johnson also enforced the color line as champ, as his white predecessors did. And for the same reasons. More profitable and less risky all around.
Johnson actually did fight Sam Langford in 1906 and won by decision in the 15th round. So it's hard to imagine that the color line was the reason he didn't allow a rematch. It's more likely the risk outweighed the reward, like you mentioned.
Mcvey was fresh out his teens fighting johnson, sam had little heavyweight experience, and jenneate was young as well. Those three where without a doubt better and the most deserving challengers of a shot. Johnson declined mcvey in paris then boxed battling jim the same month. Total frustration by Flynn. I don't condone the head butts, but Johnson was holding excessively. He should have been warned for holding. Johnson didn't seem to interested in fighting.
Looks like Flynn butted him out of frustration because all Johnson did was tie him up. Johnson was smart, any film I saw was hit and hold, hit and hold. Flynn couldn’t get his arms free so he tried another way. These were tough guys.
There were some nasty punches exchanged in the clinch. Johnson did a lot of work in the clinch even though Flynn was always coming in and initiating it. If Flynn is going to relentlessly push his way inside he should have been prepared for all the holding and dirty work that comes along with it. The ref was letting them fight inside and not breaking it up quickly so Flynn should have adjusted and been more vicious with punches instead of his head. I thought this was to Flynn's advantage but Johnson had too much control during any exchange. I thought Flynn had good defense; he got his hands up high and blocked shots and he consistently got inside on Johnson. The only problem is Flynn didn't actually box much in this fight; he didn't work his punches or set anything up. Flynn needed to do some things on the way to getting inside on Johnson, especially because Johnson was doing those extra things, like jabbing. In the end, Flynn was too predictable here, but he certainly was a tank.
Today , that fight would have been stopped in the 2nd or 3 rd round .Johnson was the much cleaner fighter , did Flynn really headbutt him or was seeing it wrong ?
Concerning holding. The rules were different then . Also, what can you do against an aponent who smothers you like Flynn? Also, the hands were always a problem. So fighters were carefull not to land punches on top of t he head. Also the fight was potentially 40 or more rounds. So you had to conserve energy.

My understanding is (please correct me if I am wrong) that Jack Johnson was wealthly to his dying day in the 1940's bc of the money he made while champion.
And the betting was crazy. All the whites would bet magnificent sums on the white fighter, while blacks would put all their money on Johnson. So Johnson won huge payouts for African-Americans while all the whites lost their wallets. But this is never brought up in the documentaries.
If you truly follow the sport, you'd know that the heavyweight title was "hands off" for Black contenders during that era. it was looked at as White America's coveted title. Johnson fought middleweights and light heavyweights for the most part. The few guys his own size were hand-picked because he knew he could whip them. He was the best of a poor lot, except for a prime Sam Langford, not the middleweight he fought in 1906, but the Boston Bonecrusher of 1908 onward. Johnson ducked him because he wanted to be the only black heavyweight champion in history. Same reason he disparaged Joe Louis.
I guess Jackson Johnson himself objected to the black contenders lack of personality as he refused to fight them for the title as well. (except to the 2nd rate Jim Johnson who held Jack to a draw). How racist of him to draw the color line no? I guess racisim at least in boxing back in those days started at 170 lbs.

Here we go. JJ fighting a middleweight. And the guy is hanging tough. How can this guy be hearalded as a great fighter when good middleweights fought him so tough? None of his fights, if he was so great should have gone more than 1 round. Just saying. The great JJ if he was Flynn would have never gone 9 rounds with the guy, never.
Light-Heavy weight, which was pretty much the norm back then. Jack Johnson started out as a Light Heavyweight and fought guys much larger than himself for the first half of his career (Denver Ed Martin, Hank Griffin, Joe Choynski, Klondyke Haynes, Marvin Hart was same size).
You've got to remember that fights in those days were often scheduled for 45 rounds. They had to box at a slower pace if they were going to go that far. Also training methods and nutrition today are far in advance of what they were then.
Sam Sum If you're gonna bring him back from the dead&give him modern training, he wouldn't be the old Jack Johnson anymore, his style wouldn't be the same, you'd have him in name only. He drank, smoked cigars& was sporadic in training...may as well give him a light saber or cool super power too. Haha

Rules were different back then. Holding and infighting were acceptable. Notice boxers from that era didn't dance around the ring, they stood toe to toe and threw punches at each other.

Johnson was 212 pounds, handpicking 170 pound guys.
Cut the crap, man.
Any modern HW would have destroyed JJohnson.
f barr Boxing has changed &evolved drastically between then&now. That's like saying a 1918 Cadillac would lose to a 1973 Coupe deVille.🤗
Can you imagine Foreman vs Johnson? I don't think it would last two rounds.
Joe Frazier would have mauled him to death.
You've got to remember that fights in those days were often scheduled for 45 rounds. They had to box at a slower pace if they were going to go that far. Also training methods and nutrition today are far in advance of what they were then.
No , for the simple reason , johnson would be using modern tactics and if he was beaten , he would certainly not be destroyed .
Haha
How pathetic were these white supremacists. No honor at all
Now THAT'S a tan!
