Thank you for this acknowledgement, as Tommy Burns "never" received the credit of allowing a defense of his title against a black fighter of 1908 times. He could have easily drawn the "color line" as other champions had done before him, and fought several years more against second-raters. Tommy was a good, tough fighter and at 5"7", and 180+ pounds, all of his opponents were taller and bigger than Tommy. In his title defense against Johnson, Tommy took a severe beating, but went out as a champ should, as the police stopped it to keep Tommy from being killed. Tommy did have his moments during this fight, it was not a complete beat-down. Tommy was his own man, tough, strong, and very courageous. He would later, after his fighting days, become a Christian preaching the word of God. He repented his youthful shortcomings and became humble in spirit, which made him the "complete" Champion. I never knew that Jack had thanked Tommy for giving him a shot at his title. That speaks well for him! After all, as Tommy would say later, Jack was one of the "greatest evers" in heavyweight boxing history, and losing, fair & square, to him was no disgrace. Tommy did his best, never quit, and lost his title, but years later "some" acknowledgement of his skills was forthcoming. This Dec. 26, 1908 championship fight was a "first" of its kind, and Tommy Burns deserves as much, if not more, credit than Johnson for permitting it to happen. Too bad that Jack didn't follow Tommy's example and allow just one of the 3-best black heavyweights a title shot. Jack did the very same thing that other white champions in boxing had done, and that was drawing the "color line" against Sam Langford, Sam McVey, and Joe Jeanette the best in the business during Jack's reign as champion.

@mrcjrowe The film only exist now as it was edited. Feel free to research it yourself, If you feel the publications from the time the fight took place are hearsay than there is no convincing you. I stand by my original statement, the stopped camera at the exact point of the KO is a myth.
@Daniel Eyre Both of these men were great Boxers in their time. Jack Johnson beat Burns through patience and technical skill rather than just relying on his size advantage. You didn't see him cutting off the ring and ducking overhand rights the entire fight? Sure fights from this era are more clinch heavy than today, but Johnson fought his way there defensively. The film from these fights is normally sped up slightly and it makes the fighters look jerky and clumsy. Try slowing it down just a little bit if you haven't done it before to see for yourself. You can learn a lot by looking for commonalities and differences between early and later fighters. This is a piece of Boxing History gold.
@Daniel Eyre I never denied that he was tying up or talking trash, and why we're talking about it, I don't understand why Burns decided to try and match strength with Johnson in the clinch so frequently. Perhaps he felt safer knowing where Johnson's hands were. Saying it was a good fight, doesn't have to imply that it was a close fight. Burns was 5'9 and 160lbs vs Johnson's 6'1 200lbs, and he still wanted the fight. He was dominant at middleweight and managed to take the heavyweight crown without actually going up in weight. You don't find it intriguing to see how someone with his background and physical disadvantages would approach and adjust to this kind of fight?
@MrEdlgar The stopped camera is a myth. The film was edited much later. Early accounts of the film describe the final knockdown. The fight was stopped before the count was completed. Possible Burns could have risen before the count of 10 but the KO was going to happen at some point anyway.

Jack Johnson vs Tommy Burns heavyweight championship of the world Dec 1908 Australia. Johnson followed Burns all over the world until finally catching up with Burns in Australia. Johnson was taller, bigger and stronger than Burns. Johnson talked to Burns during the fight, smiled and even waved at Burns at the end of round 8. Johnson was in command the entire fight. Finally in round 14, police stopped the camera and the fight, awarding Johnson the title. A really lopsided fight that should not have happened. I give credit to Burns for giving Johnson a chance at the title, but what a mistake!

Billy, Tyson was also roided up at 220 and had the machine behind him. He got his head knocked off by a 41-1 underdog and was excused by his fanboys as "past his prime" at 23, so yeah. Also, Burns took on the most dangerous fighter there was when nobody really expected him to, while Tyson stayed away from guys like Bowe, Tua, Foreman, and Morrison who might actually threaten him with power.
Jack Johnson the greatest boxer of all time! Bold, Black, and Beautiful! Unafraid in a very racist time! That’s what make Johnson the greatest! Nuff said.
where you wrong is when you said that "everybody can do it ", why don't everybody do it then to win ?? the answer is simply that its harder defend than to attack , everybody can attack throwing thousands punches in the air , but how many are smart enough to have the good timing for clinching and still being able to punch at the right time , cause you got to remember , Johnson was still knocking out people ,Hit without getting hit that's the name of the game, if u don't like it go watch ufc

It didn't occur to me before... but look at the third man in the ring, I mean the referee. He looks like a medic.. you know somebody that takes care of injured people. That's exactly what Burns needed during this fight! Johnson simply clobbered Burns into oblivion, laughing at the champion the entire first. In conclusion, Burns had a lot of confidence to accept the challenge, but Jack Johnson was a formiable opponent. Johnson was the heavyweight champion of the world from 1908-1915... it was the fight in Havana Cuba the ended his reign when Jess Willard knock out Johnson in the 26th round. It was a topic of controversy.. because Johnson insisted that he threw the first. Recently, somebody informed me that Johnson lied about that, I mean that he threw the fight. I thought he did, but I decided not to argue about it. Y'all keep watching them old fight films
@mrcjrowe Indeed, but one should admire his courage. He too could have avoided Johnson but chose not to. Racist he may have been at the time but too his credit turned his life around and became a christian preacher in his old age and preached against racism.
it's almost comical the way they danced around the ring back then. it's so different from today's fighters. I wonder how a good heavyweight from then would mach up with a good fighter of today..

@masterdelrap You must be talking about Tommy Burns, not Jack Johnson. If Jack was around today then he would be even better and bigger than he was back in the day because he would have modern trainers, etc. If Klitschko DREAMED he beat Jack Johnson he'd wake up and apologize.
What makes me so mad is Black fighters back then did not get to really show how good they really were because of such raciest white people many fights the Black man had to throw and let the white man win.. many black fighters were told to take it easy on the white fighters and not to knock them out until later in the fight because it could have caused a riot.. I can't imagine how difficult this had to be on Black fighters of that day.. We should all be Proud of some of the best fighters in the world are black.. My favorite was Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard, and my favorite of all Mike Tyson.. but there were so many black fighters of that day that couldn't become the world champions that they may have become because of raciest promoters.. if they were allowed and had the opportunity to fight the same way as white fighters I think we would be reading and talking about many many more Black world champion fighters.. It brings to mind Sonny Liston the police would not leave Liston alone they hated him and would harass him at every chance they could. but Liston handled it the best he could for years so he would not be banned from fighting.. I will never understand the world we live in but I am glad about one thing and that is being able to watch some of the most talented black fighters in the world get there chance to become world champions.. ruclips.net/video/awoLdM6bPp4/видео.html
Johnson would have never lost if he went out to seek and destroy each person put in front of him as quickly as possible. He was a great defensive fighter also. Most of his fights he grew bored trying to keep the fight going as long as possible.
+Paul Fartbomb ... Johnson could've ended this fight after a couple of rounds, but toyed with Burns to inflict maximum punishment. A hint of sadism perhaps?
He wanted to punish Burns for ducking and dodging him for all those years, and because Burns made derogatory comments about him. Jack was out to prove a point!
Johnson was a coward who refused to take a risk by attacking an opponent if there was the slightest chance he'd get hit back. Best to watch without the sound. This narrator is a nobhead who knows only what he's been told. One simple fact for instance, Burns weighed 168 and Johnson 194 (not 212). Johnson should've been cautioned for holding behind the arms, something he got away with in most of his fights. The referee was promoter Hugh McIntosh and had only a vague notion of the rules. Johnson was a caution fighter who hated to take risks (ducked Langford, Jeannette, etc.) so he held and hit in the clinches, often when he had his back to the ref.
That is one of the biggest myths in boxing. The original film was shown in Australia as well as on American navy vessels. Write ups about the film tell of showing the final knockdown as well as the police entering the ring. The film was later edited by somebody who did not want to show the end.
@Daniel Eyre
I never denied that he was tying up or talking trash, and why we're talking about it, I don't understand why Burns decided to try and match strength with Johnson in the clinch so frequently.

@MrEdlgar The stopped camera is a myth. The film was edited much later. Early accounts of the film describe the final knockdown. The fight was stopped before the count was completed. Possible Burns could have risen
before the count of 10 but the KO was going to happen at some point anyway.
9 years ago lmao i wonder if you still have this blind mindset though you are partially right burns could've gotten up up and there was film of the knock out but the film was destroyed because of old racist people back then an even if he got up you'd be a fool to say johnson's victory wasn't inevitable

@alltelman5 A lot of people might have got killed if the police hadn't stepped in and stopped the fight as the fight was very racially charged. You only have to look at what happened in the Tom Molineaux vs Toms Cribb fight in 1810 when the white local hero was in trouble in he's match.

None of these guys appear to be able to throw straight jabs. It was odd.
