      Carnera moved much better than the press indicated from those days. Carnera had a decent jab and strong uppercuts. He wasn’t taught much, about how and when to use his physical assets, with finesse. Baer and Louis damaged him greatly but he did get up from the numerous knockdowns from extremely hard punchers. Louis was in a class by himself, in those days. Anyone he hit cleanly pretty much dropped. I believe he would have trouble with Ali, Tyson, Lewis, and Fury, unless he was able to hit them, tall and or elusive and or sharp punchers.

      There is a link, but people have gotten the film and the reality blurred. The film is the film and people have taken it as gospel. As a true account of Primo's career which it is not. Carnera was deeply hurt by the film. If he was that bad ( not a real boxer all of whose fights were fixed), then how come he took two savage beatings from two of the hardest punchers in boxing history without getting knocked unconscious or even down for ten? In the film Jersey Joe Walcott shows the giant he has a glass chin in sparring, remember. That's more like Wladimir Klitschko. If he'd been hit by Louis and Baer like Primo was, he'd have been out for a week.

      The gentle giant cwilli Iv -- holds the record for KO's in the heavyweight division to this day.
      Trailing only Ezzard Charles & his 95 overall wins. Carnera holds the 2nd-most victories of all heavyweight champions at 88.
      However, Carnera's 71 career KO's are the most of any world heavyweight champion. Fighters who have come close to that record had far longer careers. No one has exceeded it. Primo's record does not show a lot of bums -- but formidable opponents -- several former champions & champions to come.
      Also, if Primo was such a bum why was Joe Louis so cautious? He didn't under-estimate Primo. And Carnera did land many jabs & punches on Louis. Primo was no bum -- he feared no one. His drawback --- a little awkward & if he was trained by an Angelo Dundee, Cus D'Amato or Kevin Rooney in his day -- Primo would've been more of a monster. I noticed that when Primo was in trouble he didn't know how to clinch & tie up a fighter. He did master the art of cutting off the ring.

    • @lastrada52
      @lastrada52 3 года назад +4

      @@kevinmunday5782 - Boy, that would have been some undertaking considering how many people would've known about it. And the fact that Primo did fight some name fighters & defeated them. That even Joe Louis said Primo was a dangerous foe & had an excellent jab.
      Kevin -- there was a "fixed" betting line on Primo & some of his handlers may have been of questionable morals -- but he was never KO'd (he was stopped, but never went out on his back). But those betting lines were on most fights, not just Primo. His fights came under scrutiny because why? He was Italian.
      But then how did he get away with it in a career of 103 fights? Ask yourself...someone would've known they were all fake. Not Jack Sharkey? Or any of the foreign fighters who were ranked, some lost to a decision (if fixed why, not a KO?). In all the reputable boxing magazines & record books to date -- Primo won more fights by KO than any other heavyweight champion in boxing history. They don't dispute it.
      Now, if I were to fix a fight for a boxer why would I have to have him do so much work? Like when he fought Max Baer? No gangster got to Baer to tell him to take a dive? (maybe they didn't have that kind of influence). Now that may have led to an investigation. Everyone forgets that as many times as Primo hit the canvass in that fight, he often took Max with him. Max was not a fighter with finesse. He was dangerous but he clumsy.
      Primo actually never had an embarrassing loss. Max never KO'd Primo with all the circus-atmosphere that surrounded that crazy bout. But Primo fought 18 more times with 12 wins & a loss to Joe Louis.
      I don't think Primo's fights were fixed -- not in the ring itself. He had skills. Joe Louis said so. And Primo was a scary guy. Probably the best naturally cut boxer in history. His physique & strength were incredible. He was bigger than George Foreman. Maybe he had a glass jaw (though he was never KO'd) -- but he was far more courageous & had more abilities than say today's, Bob Sapp (who despite his size should not be in the ring).

    Outstanding. Carnera was a big guy, lethal puncher, great jab; he was serious in there. Throughout the fight when the bell rang you could see Carnera run out to Louis to fight, and he did fight a really good fight, but everything Louis did seemed to be more effective and it did seem like Louis was steadily increasing control of the fight.
    I think Carnera is a perfect example of how Vitali and Wlad would match up against Louis, so there you have it, Louis is faster with a punch that is as strong as anyone's. It doesn't take much to get an idea of how Lennox would flare vs Louis and I'd say Carnera was a bigger puncher than Lennox.

    • @reddestroyer9809

      According to one boxing book i have read Primo Carnera was a complete bum, a lot of his fights were apparently fixed. So i don't think you can compare him to Lennox, Lennox was probably on another level. As to Lennox fighting Joe, i think Lennox would've given Joe a lot of trouble. Lennox was just too big for Joe, very fast and skilled.

    • @crawlFace
      @crawlFace 10 лет назад +7

      Red Destroyer
      I heard the same about Carnera but I have analyzed most available footage and I am convinced that Carnera made a conscious effort to get better and develop some skill.
      Bum and fixed competition or not it doesn't tae much to see what Carnera brings to the table. He's a big guy with a big punch. But by the time he faced Louis he had improved on his defense and positioning. I feel technically the Louis fight was one of Carnera's better fights as far as use of skill and boxing. He had a jab going, he kept his gloves in good defensive positions and he kept his body position composed for the most part. I suppose he was just too big and not polished enough to edge the elite fighters in the big exchanges of a fight, so he got beat by the best.
      I do feel Lennox has the skill and better use of his size as well as better defense to beat Carnera.
      Sincerely, I ask you to rethink the too big size argument. Joe actually had the most difficulty with smaller guys and dancers and stick and move fast opponents. Joe took care of all the big fighters similar to Lennox's size. With that being said, no one is walking right over Lennox but speed and power edge actually go to Louis. Louis is faster than Lennox and Lennox notoriously slows down throughout his fights. Lennox rarely had to defend against punches that were as fast and powerful and technically precise as Joe Louis' punches.
      Keep this in mind also, the reason we don't see so many Lennox Lewis size fighters in the past is because they couldn't consistently do well vs the Joe Louis size heavyweights. Louis was not small, he jut didn't weigh 220 but he certainly hit like he did.
      You can bet that if a 6'6" 250lb fighter could thrive in the division in the past then we certainly would have seen them. Don't tell me there were no 6'6" inch people back then. My theory is that they just couldn't do well enough to make it to the top because speed and power is the deadliest combo and will trump speed and size or power and size.
      As you probably know, yesteryear's fighters were vicious on the inside. Big hulking fighters had their size exploited. The ideal heavyweight seemed to be a fighter who possessed all the skills Lennox did and had the same power but was a little smaller and faster.

    • @reddestroyer9809
      @reddestroyer9809 10 лет назад

      crawlFace
      Well you know what they say, a good big fighter will beat a good small fighter. The problem i see is the reach advantage Lennox would've over Joe, it would've been very difficult for Joe to bypass Lennox's great jab and even if he did Lennox would've probably clinched him with his big long arms. Let me just emphasize that Lennox was much more gifted then all those big guys Joe fought, he's considered to have been the last great heavyweight. In his prime he probably would've beaten Evander, Ridick and Tyson. Joe would've a lot on his plate, he would've to deal with a great long jab, uppercuts, a long cross and constant clinching.
      I do actually think Joe would've beaten Lennox for the reasons you mentioned, but he would've gone through hell. Also if you don't mind me asking, you seem like a keen observer of the sport. I would like to know who in your opinion is the best fighter pound for pound you have ever seen. Maybe even your top 3 if you don't mind?

    • @lastrada52
      @lastrada52 4 года назад +7

      You're right Dave W -- they can say what they want about Carera but to this day his professional KO stats (except for Ezzard Charles & his 95 wins), Carnera holds the 2nd-most victories of all heavyweight champions with 89.
      Carnera's 72 career KO's -- the most of any world heavyweight champion. George Foreman is close at 68 and 76 wins in a career that was far longer than Primo.
      Ali had only 37 KO's in his career, with 56 wins. And Ali also fought some bums. Primo Carnera was no bum. He wasn't the best heavyweight that ever lived but his determination courage & power is not disputed. He fought anyone they put in front of him and he even defeated one heavyweight who was bigger than him -- Santa Camarão, a 6 ft 9" Portuguese fighter. Carnera won the fight by KO in the sixth round.
      As far as the mob -- they put money up (purses) for Carnera and like any fighter to this day (management, as such) chose who their fighter would defend against based on how ready their fighter was and if the money was right. (It is a business after all). Ali never gave George Foreman a rematch & Mike Tyson never met George Foreman. Ever wonder why?
      If Carnera was mob controlled as many believed -- why did he lose to Baer & Louis? Primo lost 6 times prior to the Baer fight but he did KO champion, Jack Sharkey.
      With Baer, Primo went down about 11 times (but got up every time) -- if Primo was going to throw the fight why go down 11 times?
      Why put him in with a great fighter like Joe Louis? Primo was one of the most thickly muscled heavyweights in history -- bigger & taller than George Foreman, or Gerry Clooney. He had no glass jaw. He stood up to Joe Louis's punches for quite some time and went toe to toe. By the way, Louis admitted in an interview that Primo's punches were devastating & he had to be extremely careful.
      If Primo was a bum -- he should've lost many more times. I wouldn't under-estimate the likes of a Primo Carnera.
      Louis had his problems with "bums," just lookup Two-Ton Tony Galento who floored Louis and had Joe in trouble more than once. Galento was the forerunner of the showmanship that both Ali & George Foreman used. Tony taunted his opponents with funny remarks and he ate pasta, drank beer and smoked cigars before fights. And he was a dangerous fighter in that later Butterbean mold.

    some not sane odd person said this to me, I've seen your videos on Deontay, as well as your ones on Wlad and the 70s-90s comparison. I find most of it disagreeable, mainly with how you describe the techniques being shown in their respective clips. I agree that Galento, Baer, Braddock, and Carnera were crude boxers, but they were also seen as crude for their own time. I also agree with Marciano's technique being vastly overrated. I disagree with your views on Louis the most. In fact, I think Louis looks great in most of the footage that you use to try and prove your point. In the 70s-90s video, you use Carnera footage to argue that Louis has stiff and sluggish movement, but Louis is moving beautifully in that footage. He's constantly circling with Carnera, moving in and out, feinting, using head movement, parrying, and slipping his jab, while peppering him at will with his own jabs. You argue that Louis looks unsure of himself, but I'd say he looks extremely confident and that Carnera is the only one looking terrified. Carnera has a decent jab but overall looks crude, but Louis looks like a modern boxer in that fight. It's the same case for the footage you use for the Baer fight. You argue that Louis looks sluggish, lacks upper and lower body movement, and can't effectively punch from range or punch while moving. I disagree; in fact, I think Louis pretty much does this in the examples you use. Louis is effortlessly jabbing and hooking from range and is doing it incredibly smoothly. He's using nuanced lateral movement and punching beautifully while doing it. He's dominating the crude Baer like any great boxer would. In your Deontay video, you use a terrified Schmeling getting bulldozed by a rushing Louis in a minute as an example of how Louis and Schmeling can't fight from range or manage distance. I don't think that's really fair; it's clear from the other fights that Louis knows how to use range, angles, and manage distance. I also don't think Louis looks horrible at all here; in fact, he's constantly feinting and anxious to parry that right hand, since you emphasize looking at their hands. They both do well at defending themselves on the inside at 1:18-1:25. Very tight guards. Schmeling cleverly blocks, then rolls Louis' punches at 0:54. I don't think this is the best exampleofr either of their technical brilliance, but I don't think they look bad either. It's important to note that Schmeling said that he was scaredsh*tlesss before the figh, and basically lost before the fightbegan,n like Spinks against Tyson. You also use a pastprime,e Louis and Conn, who had just fought 4 years in the war, from their 1946 fight as your example for why they're inefficient at range, mostly punch just when they stop, stand in front of their opponents waiting to be hit, and even in thiscase,e I still disagree with you. The past prime, basically shot Billy Conn effectively uses lateral movement and isn't predictable with it, parries and overall defends himselfwell,l and jabs from range well. I still think theydido all of these things much better in their first match, especially Conn. I also don't think a pastprime minister,e Ezzard Charles, who reportedly had symptoms of ALS as early as 1951, is the best example to use to define that era's techniques either. Same with the Moore and Dempsey clips. Dempsey,Charles,s and Moore didn't fight like that normally atall,l and when you watch their fights in fulllength,h that becomes clear. Dempsey displays crisp head movement and good technique in his fights with Brennan, Gibbons, and in his training footage with Bill Tate. He even displays good defenseand,d attimes,s technique in his past prime footage against Sharkey and Tunney. 4- yea- old Moore was cooking Marciano at range in the early rounds of their fight, and effectivelydefendingd himself while countering Rock.,Evennthen,n I find Moore's performances against Bivins and Davidson much more impressive. Charles looks modern in his fight against Lloyd Marshall. They're all much more skilled than Deontay.
    Can you watch my video of Deon/Foreman Louis Vid and tell me if you see anybody that fought Deon or himself or if anybody I showed Foreman fought or himself was less skilled or using the same obsolete tech as the guys I compared them to?

    Primo Carnera was a real giant for this time 6'7 260 pounds and pure muscle. Today most heavyweights looks nothing like that. They look more like walking punching bags (Tyson Fury, Nikolai Valuev, Alexander Ustinov, Dominick Breazele, Mariusz Wach, Ruslan Chagaev and other). His fighting strategy was not different than modern boxers.
    Many people say champions of the past would have no chance in modern era, but I don't agree. I am sure that Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier would have done as well as they did at their own time.

    Carnera's chief claim to fame was being a physical freak--for his time, anyway--and a decent enough boxer, Mob controlled, Fascist linked, and all. (Louis himself had Mob connections as well!) Perhaps, he wasn't really Championship quality at all in Boxing, yet he tried his best with what advantages he did had: size, strength, stamina, and a better than average left jab. But, Primo's life after professional boxing and World War II proved he was a gentleman of good character. Carnera did some "acting" in films--Does anyone remember MIGHTY JOE YOUNG?!--and was a rather popular professional wrestler in the 40's & 50's, while being a good father & raising a family--One of his sons became a top L.A. heart surgeon.

    Here's my thoughts watching the fight. Kind of a lose/lose situation for Primo. If he initiates the action, Joe will counter him effectively. If he waits, Joe beats him with his speed and footwork. We know Joe is gonna throw a hard right counter over Primo's lazy left jab. If Primo could only time that, slip that, and counter with his own left hook, he'd have Joe dead to rights. Easier said than done, eh? What say you all?

    No-one was ever going to beat Joe on jabs alone; he needed to be hit. Primo was ,sadly, just another opponent who was on the backfoot right from the start. George Foreman would have taken the fight to Joe from the outset, never retreating; constantly moving forward and throwing bombs. That's what Carnera should have done. Don’t you just love the resolution of these old films. You can just barely see enough facial features to recognize who each fighter was. Same with televised baseball games in the 50s. I had no idea what baseball players actually looked like, unless I was lucky enough to get one of their Topps baseball cards - they made an appearance on “Home Run Derby”!

    Carnera suffered from a hatchet job by the fake media of the time. He was not the mug they made him out to be. He moved beautifully had a fast and stinging jab which would have served him better if he had been taught to bring it back chin high. That was his fatal flaw in all his fights especially this one.He also had a pretty good right and knocked out quite a few people in his career. Please note he went 6 rounds with one of the greatest fighters in history, As a side note; Lewis had the same fatal flaw with the jab recovery and that was what Max Schmelling saw and in a pre fight quote said " I zee zomzing" never saying what it was but used it to beat Lewis the first time.

    these are the comments from a guy in the comments on the joe vs bowe vid who isn't sane name is oneshot
    I watched full matches of Joe Louis's fights not highlights. He was very explosive and fast when he wanted to be. You can say that boxers that came after were more advanced with less flaws all you want and diminish his skills all you want, but pretty much every boxing expert and fan agree he was the most technically complete boxer in heavyweight history
    you compared one of Louis's opponents to one of the best best fighters in the 80's. How does that translate to Louis's own skill? You say fighters from this era don't have good blocking and clearly haven't seen Louis's amazing defense and head movement. How he prevents his opponents from throwing counters when he does, how he prepares to duck one if it does come, how he'd parry his opponents punches with both his lead and rear hand, how he'll constantly change angles to make sure he doesn't stay straight in his opponents line of fire. You say he was flat footed and slow, but you forget that he was trained to not move around a lot and only do so when he needed to. That's exactly what he did. They fight fifteen rounds and he saves his stamina by doing what he does. Your video proved nothing about Louis's ability and only showed a direct comparison between a couple clips of one of his opponents and someone more modern. H
    The video is a direct comparison between two fighters from two different eras, not analyzing the eras of fighters as a whole, and most certainly not Joe Louis
    You should look up videos of his head movement and defense if that's what you believe. His defense was one of the best the heavyweight division has seen to this day.
    The average fighter in the 70-s and 80's aren't beating the greats of the 30's and 40's. Technique didn't improve anywhere near as much as you think
    It only compared Primo to Wlad and didn't showcase really any other fighters. You can't take just two people and generalize the whole eras with just those two, especially if one is one of the best and the other is one of the worst
    The average fighter in the 80's-90's may be better than one from the 30's-40's. They just aren't better than the greats of that era
    His defense wasn't horrendous but it definitely wasn't good. Joe Louis didn't waste punches, had real defense, much better punch technique, pivoted to control space, was faster and more accurate, didn't throw wide hooks and uppercuts but controlled and accurate punches that could knock you out or rattle you from 6 inches away or at arms length. He was far better at all of that then either version of Georg
    Old George was better than young George and yet he was still inferior to Louis in every category except for punching power and chin. If he was far slower and more flat footed than Louis, had worse technique,

    Based on size alone i feel Primo had potential to dominate boxing in those days...There isn't much wrong you can do being 6'6" with an 85" reach, and a chin to boot lasting 6 rounds with Joe Louis.
    He's just clearly a bumbling oaf with little skill and training.
    and despite all that, he managed an 89-14 career with 72 KO's, maybe had he been with legitimate trainers it would have turned differently.

    • @SurendranNambiath
      @SurendranNambiath 6 лет назад +2

      Agree. I'd like to add that what he primarily lacked was the killer instinct - running three-fourths of the way across the ring at the start of each round is all fine, but he just could not hold his hands up in the 6th Round! He neither uses his enormous reach to advantage, nor does he throw combos - just a li'l jab here and there, waiting for the chance to hit with his right hand!
      But then, Boxing has changed a lot now. Joe Louis fought a lot more like heavyweights of today!

    • @submissivelover
      @submissivelover 6 лет назад +2

      Yes, i'm surprised it took trainers so long to properly train massive men to box. A lot of fantastic physical specimens were not taught how to use their reach well. Both the Baer Brothers, Primo, massive reach advantages and yet decided to pressure and walk down opponents instead of leaning back and landing massive punches from a safe distance. Imagine what a Max Baer might have been if he bothered using his 81" reach? or his brother bothered applying long jabs and straight rights with his 84" reach.

    • @honestperson6280
      @honestperson6280 6 лет назад

      submissivelover I don't think it's about size, it's more about skill and who wants it more! After all, look at the Jess Willard/Jack Demsey fight and let's not forget, Mike Tyson is barely 5'10 yet he had beaten guys way taller and longer reaches than him!

      Not so in this case. Hand cranked cameras were obsolete by the 1930's. The reason this looks "sped up" is because people aren't expecting "old time" boxers like Louis and Carnera to be this much faster than the pathetic crop of current heavyweights.

    Primo has terrible defence. He leaves himself wide open to the counter, and he has a very slow pawing jab. Primo doesn't seem to have good enough footwork to move himself back and away from Louis's attack. Primo would not have much chance against Wladimir, Vitali, Ali, Tyson, or any modern B level fighter really.
