Jack Johnson Vs. James J Jeffries (July 4th, 1910)

- The "Fight of the Century"
In 1910, former undefeated heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries came out of retirement and said, "I feel obligated to the sporting public at least to make an effort to reclaim the heavyweight championship for the white race. . . . I should step into the ring again and demonstrate that a white man is king of them all." Jeffries had not fought in six years and had to lose weight to get back to his championship fighting weight.
The fight took place on July 4, 1910 in front of 20,000 people, at a ring built just for the occasion in downtown Reno, Nevada. Johnson proved stronger and more nimble than Jeffries. In the 15th round, after Jeffries had been knocked down twice for the first time in his career, his people called it quits to prevent Johnson from knocking him out.
The "Fight of the Century" earned Johnson $65,000 and silenced the critics, who had belittled Johnson's previous victory over Tommy Burns as "empty," claiming that Burns was a false champion since Jeffries had retired undefeated.

My Dad and Uncles talked about this era when I was a kid. Needless to say, hearing stories about champions made quite an impression on me as an adolescent boy. These vintage films of that era really brought my Grandfather’s memory to life.
45 - 3 minute rounds? Holy smokes!
The slobs of today struggle to do 12 rounds in normal heat.
Yeah. Not only that, but in 100 plus degree heat. Crazy. Today’s fighters couldn’t do 10 rounds in those conditions.
What about that 75 round fight? Different times back then.
@joe56984 cmon man. These guys didn't have nearly the same work rate. There was barely activity for 90% of the fight.

C'mon man. You don't know jack. C'mon man.
Jack Johnson was clearly ahead of his time with all he did in and out the ring...what courage! This man needs to be recognized more and celebrated. A TRUE LEGEND!
What a shame they had to involve race back then. Johnson is an incredible person as well as a fighter. Imagine fighting in front of thousands of racist who despise your kind, during a time lynchings were happening. Johnson would knock out their white hopes, date white women, and sport around in fancy cars.
.....I think the racist is you. Don't go smearing everything so wide, an entire demographic is not always to blame. Many at the match might have even been fans of Johnson for all you know, there's always racists the difference better standards of living, education and massive system can make are amazing. We'll likely only see horrors like that again if asshats like yourself continue to press the issue and control is lost.
Black sports champions still experience this type of virulent racism. Venus and Serena were subject to it in tennis
Rico Vergara He also was a woman beater and serial adulterer. There were much worse men around in his day, but let's not paint him as a saint
@@7dayspking You should read how the media and the audience treated Jack Johnson during his bout with Burns in Sydney and subsequent fights. They were so fucking pathetic and insecure that they made a 'Great White Hope' to groom a white fighter to beat him, unable to digest the fact that a black man is the heavyweight champion of the world. The only 'white' people who supported him was his support crew, his mentors (including Joe Choynski) and his girlfriend/wife. Not saying that they were all racist to him, but the amount of hate that he had to face was shocking. Which makes him an amazing fighter because he had to be physically, mentally and emotionally strong to be the champion that he was.
7dayspking bro get fucking real this is in 1910 the Jim Crow era. Racists were a dime a dozen
I took my son to this fight. It was a great fight I tell ya
u are soo funny!!!

I lost FOURTEEN DOLLARS on Jeffries!
I'm _still_ sore about it...

WOW. fourteen dollars of then is $14,000 of today
blazingax05 you guys are all liars. this fight was in 1910. youd have to be well over your 100s if you saw this fight....
45 rounds????????? holy shit
That's what I said
highest was 50
The fight between J.J Corbett and Peter Jackson went 61 rounds before being decided as a draw
@BabyGangstaDick back in the old days a fight ended when someone got knocked out. It could go like 100 rounds
I remmeber I was 25 when this fight came about. I had just bought a pop for a penny and caught ghonorea from a wench
TRÈ MONSTER so you are 130 years old? loll. this was in 1910...
+CaseysBeats Knew it.
CaseysBeats he still probably had gonorrhea.
lol
Damn yall niggaz immortal
I don't care what anyone says Johnson is easily one of the top 10 heavyweights to ever fight. Put him in any other era than the early 1900's and allow him the stuff the other era fighters had and he woulda been just as solid as he was in his era.
He had a ton of courage and stood up against idiotic social trends and had the nads to run his mouth and back it up; he was a loudmouth way before Ali even dreamed to be one. He also helped evolve boxing from a sport from old fat and skinny dudes to a sport of people in shape and made it an event.
You don't care what anyone says? Good. GivesAShit what YOU says. FFFucker.
Jack raised the bar when it was needed most.
The good lessons are always the hardest.
An incredible man; an incredible mentor.
A fight for the ages.
Tbh that was a slow dancing contest.
July in Reno? And they all wore there Sunday best in that heat? Crazy.
MrUnsolvedMystery Yeah I live about 30 minutes away from Reno and right now it's in the 90's lol.
... and their Sunday best was ALL WOOL! Crazy shit
This fight was scheduled for 45 rounds of boxing, now a pro boxer would die from exhaustion after 18 rounds. How in the hell could a human be in that kind of shape, and what the hell happened to us?
JOE FERGUSON GMO
KingCetshwayo, that GMO has damn near destroyed us.
this is an assumption but maybe cuz the early 1900s was rough and slavery had ended like 30 years prior
Tougher times, tougher men..
We are spoiled now
45 rounds in 110 DEGREE HEAT!❕
I visit the monument in Reno every time I'm out there.
The internet can be a great thing. Here I am watching footage of a boxing match from 109 years ago... 109 years!!!.... if that’s not incredible, I don’t know what is.
hollywood gatta make a movie on Jack Johnson
Yea right more like put him in the movie getting knocked out in the 26th round to lose the championship
There is one.
I thought there was at least one
I saw a documentary on his life some years ago he was something
That would be such a bizarre time to live in
Wait! Did I hear him say President Taft was asked to referee? Lol!!!
"Well, I WAS going to run the country, but sure - I can head to Australia and referee a bazillion round boxing match. Do I have to do anything?"
i thought he said the fight was in Reno
Yes, this fight was in Reno, NV. Johnson won the title in Australia in 1908.
Looks like you're the bonehead, B H. That what B H is? Bone Head?
What a man Jack Johnson great boxer
Theres no way he weighed 334lbs @1:32 they dramatized it to lessen the blow if Johnson won
Yea that is total non sense. I heard 6'1 210 or something. I could be wrong.
jklem22 it is possible, but they used to have former champions weigh in at fights that they attended. So maybe it was exaggerated, but maybe he really was that overweight.
@@joe56984 jefferies gained 100 pounds in the five yrs after he retired . he was a big man at 6 foot 2 and 220 natural pounds,
Jeffries was 220 when he fought in his prime. He ballooned to 300+ when he retired. Think of George Foreman. Now, imagine Foreman fighting for the title first time back, no tune ups, nothing. Wouldn't have gone well
Jeffries weighed 334.
Knock it off.
jack johnson the greatest fighting machine off all time.
I could beat him but I don't wanna.
B H Mch for me he is one of the greatest humans ever to be born. to be a champion in those times to fight for over 20 rounds and with massive discrimination to become a champion is one of he most impressive things a human being has ever done. the guy had to destroy his opponents to win a decision because if the fight was close the people would probably give it to the other guy.
Rocky is best. Undefeated
Nah prime Jeffries would've killed him
Steven Solano that fat racist wanker ducked him when he was in his 'prime'
#1 Retired for 6 years.
#2 Had to lose 110+ pounds to get in fighting shape.
#3 outdoor stadium where the temperature was 110+ degrees.
#4 Fight scheduled for 45 ROUNDS!!!!!
#5 Current Champ in tip top shape.
He went 15 rounds with the champ in spite of all of those circumstances. This man is a winner in my book!
Jim Jefferies is crowding Jack Johnson trying to smother his punches and render them useless. That's what a fighter does then he knows he cannot take many of his punches. It's an ugly way to brawl, instead of to box your opponent. I used it, when ever I had an opponent who boxed better than I could and I upset them by never giving them the space needed to perform their techniques gracefully! They key is, you have to know how to box and to brawl just as Jack did!
Jim Jeffries always fought like that. Johnson trained for it, and did a good job pinning his arms.
@@engine2truck6 he def did train for it. im so glad they pointed out johnson said he was gonna pin jeffries arms behind his back right before he did it.
That's right. It also can sometimes work against a puncher. He has no room to punch if your pressed against him pushing him backwards.

The guy on the right at 1:00 was the first heavyweight champion. He won all of his fights except the last one. His name was John L. Sullivan.
@knightowl50 knocked out by a woman ? That's b******* what kind of drugs you on
44 rounds, they had to have crazy conditioning. Gotta consider that when we compare the old school fighters to now.
Otis James and they say old athletes wouldnt make it today. Tuh !
Thank you for this Johnson fight. 🍻
its amazing how much the sport and how it's fought have changed
Still one of the greatest fights, Jeffries did well to do 15 rounds after 8? years rest.
Thx a lot 4 this
Jack toyed with the white hope ha ha ha
Get back in your tree.
Cloud Dweller "I could never have whipped Johnson at my best," Jeffries said. "I couldn't have hit him. No, I couldn't have reached him in 1,000 years."
OdizzleDot S Johnson met Jeffries in a bar during Jeffries title reign to get a title shot. Jeffries refused but told Johnson ""There's a cellar in the place. 'Tell you what I'll do. I won't meet you in the ring because you got no name and we wouldn't draw flies. But I'll go downstairs with you and lock the door on the inside. The one who comes out with the key will be the champ." Johnson refused and walked out.
***** That is made up. Even if it were true, could you blame him for refusing a bar fight in cellar? What the hell do you think would happen to him after that? If he won everyone was going to sit and accept him as champion? No. Only way it could be done was in the ring, and it was. That story is bullshit.
OdizzleDot S Where is it made up? Jeffries was also overweight and had been retired for 6 years. That really doesn't prove anything to me.. Plus Jeffries was a much nicer man than most think. I've heard he wasn't even racist. He just drew the line because that is what was expected.
i really stand out with my white hat in tribute to the Master race
You bettah. 👈👺
referee was useless
He was the promoter, he'd never reffed a fight in his life.
Thats how it was back then and ive even heard of it going to like 75 rounds and such. 13 + rounds in 110 degree weather man now that's tuff.
Hollywood should make a film about Jack. He was a great character as well as boxer and his is an amazing story
Johnson was decades ahead of his time for technique. Most of the fighters back then were just crude brawlers. Johnson whether you like him or not as a person war an all time great fighter. Jeffries himself said he could never have beaten Johnson even when he was at his best.
People act like there was this huge gap.... they were only 3 years apart in age. Jefferies was 35 and Johnson was 32 for this fight. Jefferies had a year to train for the fight and looked in really good shape on that jump rope.
It's just Johnson could take Jefferies left like no one before while also hitting Jefferies harder than he was use to being hit.
@@jessekittrell2946
Jeffries was retired for six years. Cut the crap.
Decades ahead of his time? His greatest asset was his grappling in the clinches which ironically would be largely phased out of boxing in the upcoming decades
@@TheBatugan77 he’s either special needs or in denial as you’ve had to tell him this multiple times.
Sad thing is Jeffries was in his prime one of the all time boxing greats, he still has a place in boxing history, but money grubbing and racism brought him out of retirement when he was past his prime. One of the great facepalms of sports. He should have stayed retired and kept a more vaunted place in history.
If only there were a time machine I'd like to go back in time be at ringside and watch these great fighters go at it
This isn't 4K but idk if it's 720p
How you going so old video
boxing in hot 110 degrees ? sounds like a hell of a fight ?
I "Celebrate" Jack Johnson on 4th of July. He is our emancipator and our INDEPENDENCE!
He literally refused to fight any black fighters after winning the title and only dated white people. He may have overcame racism of his time, but he could care less of his fellow brothers and sisters.
History on fire
I don't get how do they have this video but no video on sugar ray Robinson as a welter
Megafight of the century and the 1st black HW champion. How could you not?
Wow 110 years ago today happy july 4th
2 hours and 15 minutes of fighting, why not just say "til the death"
One could say that modern day boxing has come a looong way. I see stuff in that fight that makes me say "oh that's not very sporting". But, I'm also aware that in 1910, boxing had come a looong way from where it had been in 1810. 1810 of course being the 100 years refined version of the 1710 "boxing". How rad would it be to "Watch" a Mendoza or Molineaux fight? I'd love to see the Broughton vs. Slack fight, as I appreciate the "bad guys" in boxing; for the emotional investment in seeing them brought down, and them administering a double dose of life's cruel reality, when they straight up *Starch* the good guy.
I can only imagine how different boxing/pugilism must've been in it's early years.😞
Who's idea was it to have a massive fight schedule for July in the desert!?!?!?!
That was brutal man!!
Biggest sporting event of the century?? In 1910.
they had no idea ali and frazier were in the future
James McConnie
Not to mention Tyson.
or Dempsey
"fight of the century" #1 of 25 🤔
75 ROUND FIGHT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Who in the hell would fight in 100 degree weather?? These guys were insane.
Money talks....
It was 110, even more insane
this is beautiful
Wish I might have seen it
He's not lying to you, he is saying the sources of your information are lying to you.
jeff was 35 not 37
You mean jim was 37.......
RIP Jack Johnson and Muhammad Ali
it would be good to have the experiment of matching Johnson against: Marciano, Liston, Ali, Foreman and Tyson !!
Johnson was notoriously for pinning his opponent's arms down when in close. I don't think that would have went over well in later years
history.... only the best
jack johnson is the greatest of all-time past an present an the greatest of all time is the greatest of all-time past an present
Victor Ervin stop the presses one and all, Victor has declared Johnson the greatest ever. We should therefore heed his mighty words and stellar knowledge of the subject.
Have you seen John Jackson?
So jack johnson could beat george forman?
What was Johnsons best win? The retired old overweight Jeffries? Middleweight Ketchel? 5ft 7 Tommy burns? 156 pound McVea? Raw novice in Langford and Jeanette both Johnson would duck later on? Johnson was good but he lost to freaking Marvin Hart for Gods sake
Johnson made$65,000 for that fight, which is a little north of $2,000,000 in today's money. Not a bad chunk of change, but Jeffries including his signing bonus made almost twice that as the losing challenger. That's 1910 for ya
115 years ago. Damn.
Imagine doing more than 10 rounds of boxing at 110 degrees in the humidity of Nevada. While this is happening, our county is fighting a war against the Spaniards.
LOL the laid-back, laissez faire referee in the boater hat: 'Just get on with it guys. I don't want to get involved.'
So old but good
People say "six year layoff' trying to make it sound like Jefferies was super old. Lol he retired at 29. He was 35 for this fight & Johnson was 32. And it was a 4 year layoff (not 6 lol). He retired in 1905 then trained for a year for the fight in 1910.
*Mike Tyson was Washed up at 35*
It was a six year layoff, dpsht.

Knowing them they probably never scripted back then and just messed eachother up.
Jeffries was a bigot but you have to admit his rejuvenation was very impressive.
kinda makes you wish they'd abolish the neutral corner rule. Things sure were definitely more ruthless back in Boxing's pre-historic times...
How things changed to modern day how boring it was to watch two guys hold each other almost completely each 3 minutes rounds.
Excuse me.. BUT WHAT IN THE FLYING FUCK IS: "A Morning Constitutional"? (3:45) ~ And if Jack Johnson took HIS.. how can I take MY morning constitutional!? Is 'constitutional' Titanic-era slang for 'vitamins'? ... OR "Dump"! He took his morning dump? Of course he did! Wow..totally makes sense now. In fact, There are times where I even take TWO morning constitutionals!
( adding something unrelated->) some things sound so ridiculous I had to re-listen just to make sure they were really said. Most ridiculous, "The Dispute Over Referee"-> APPARENTLY, the BEST TWO options - to Referee 45-rounds of boxing - were: OPTION #1. "..Ask Ol' President Taft! ..No? " ~ OPTION #2. "..Send A WIRE to 'Sir. Author-of-Sherlock Holmes'!" ... hahaha WTF?! It's hard to even imagine how different things were then! But it's like: 'Mayweather vs. Pacquiao'.. "Hey, Obama! you gonna ref? No? Hey, J.K. Rowling!.."
+Bryan Donovan Jr. A morning constitutional is a brisk walk.
LOL. THAT was hilarious!
4:37 WTF? Wow, people didn't know WHAT they were doing back then

Just as in 90 years people will see things we see normal now and say "WTF, how people in 2020 did those things back then?
Yeah but he's no Dredrick Tatum
DAMN! Snaggletooth got put the fuck down!
Thanks Killa Mike,
Geee in those days they almost didn't aloud boxers to stand up correctly after a fall. Johnson went inmediately after Jeffries when he was still down not allowing him to recover.
I guess text Rickard was anti Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt did have boxing experience while the others mentioned did not.
75 FUCKING ROUNDS BARE KNUCKLES😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤕🤕💪 4:56 75 ROUNDS GOOD LORD
William Howard Taft was north of 300 lbs. He ain't reffing 45 rounds.
The jeffries that beat fitzimmons woulda won
Like how Jeffries was old here, Fitz was old when Jeffries beat him. How would prime Jeffries do against prime johnson? Who knows, but I bet prime Fitz beats them both
314 lbs to a competitive 226 in six months, that would be amazing today but he did that in 1910. I know that there isn't "video" documentation, but is there any kinda written about how he did it? He did all that before protein shakes, thermogenics, pre/ post workout supplements, and all the different workout regiments/ machines we have today. It would be interesting to see what he ate, how he worked out, and overall what he did at that time to get back into great shape.
He ate lightning! And crapped thunder!
Almost a decade old question im sure you googled on the same day but Jefferies went to bohemia to lose weight mainly swimming and eating right

"Sam Langford affectionately called the Boston tar-baby"
Holy shit, the racism back then was unreal. Also, "Affectionately"? They thought calling him that was nice? It makes me shudder to think what was considered mean.
He was OUT of the ring for 3 years, working on a farm...and what do YOU think they did to unwind after that??? MANY would smoke,. drink..,etc....and he admitted that he did smoked several packs a day and he lost over 100 pounds to train...but he was just outclassed by Johnson who really ddin't trained MUCH for this bout..and I NEVER said he was past his prime...but if he did trained more, the match wouldn't had gone as FAR as it did over a century ago....
At 9:55 Johnson does something not very legal, I never noticed it before. After he hits Jeffries with a left hook if you watch and rewatch closely and slowly those seconds you notice he pushes Jeffries out of the ring with his hands. Use slow motion and see
Let's not be a whiny bitchalittle, danny.
caralho era outro tempo!
O bagulho era sinistro...em todos os aspectos...
Talk English. Fucker.
First of all, Jeffries wasnt smoking cigs as you claim. Second, Johnson wasnt past his prime. He had just won the title not too long before that.
I cant believe the $120K arena fee was paid in gold!!!
That was a grappling match, not a boxing match.
Now MANY fighters TOSAY would stand 45 rounds like Johnson and Jefferies....tht what makes THEM beter than those today, except Louis, Maricano, Louis, Ali and Sugar Ray...
In the 1800s & 1900s boxers fighting stance is so weird and they punch weird too
The fact Johnson beat him on the 4th of July makes it all more satisfying lol
