- 25 year old, 6'1", 188½ lb Heavyweight Champion Manassa Mauler Jack Dempsey vs 27 year old, 6'1", 197 lb challenger KO Bill Brennan. Dempsey's second defense. Dec 14, 1920. Sold out crowd of 17000 fans at Madison Square Garden (dwarfed by the over 80 000 fans Dempsey would draw in his next fight against Carpentier). Scheduled for 15 rds, Brennan lasted longer against Dempsey than any other man. In 1918, contender Dempsey KO'ed contender Brennan in 6 rds, but Brennan fought 30 more fights in 29 months earning a title shot. Brennan closed out his career in 1923 with 48 KO's and 102 fights. Brennan was murdered in 1924. Dempsey's manager, Doc Kearns, blamed the tough Brennan title defense on Dempsey violating the fighters' celibacy rule during training camp. Dempsey bled from the right ear throughout the fight. Brennan was ahead on points going into rd 12.
Rewatching this video, it is almost unbelieveable how many Dempsey left hooks Brennan absorbed on the inside. People who say Dempsey fought bums, obviously haven't watched enough old school boxing. The gloves back then were stuffed with horse hair with only 6-8oz of filling, With so many guys around, you had to be incredibly tough to fight at top level. Dempsey, Johnson, Tunney, Jeffries, Willard, etc, all had unbelieveable punch resistance and resilience, simply because it was required.
I love how Dempsey helps him get to the corner, pure class.
IT'S PART OF DEMPSEY"S RITUAL TO EXTEND A HELPING HAND, AFTER PULVERISING AN OPPONENT!
Dempsey was truly great. Somehow he has become underrated.
Brennan was one of the best Dempsey opponents during his championship reign. He gave a very good account of himself here.
All flame and fury, Dempsey always shows compassion and sportsmanship immediately when the fight ends. A true Jekyll and Hyde.
I SALUTE THE VIVID COMPARISON, MR. TRACKMAN....DR.JEKYLL @ MR. HYDE!!!
@@jesusapolicarpio-delacruz3851 Yes, Dempsey wanted to kill you once the bell rang, but when it's over, you can tell he really cared about the opponent. Same thing at the end of the Jess Willard fight--he rushes over to see how he is. Lesson: 100% to win; then be humble and generous after.
U see !!! It's almost a hundred years he fought ,, His stye still look good ,he has speed ,power and foot work that's excellent !!!! He was a greatest one I believed ................
yes he has become under rated by some, and the vast majority of them dont know very much.he was absolutely, without a single doubt, one of the greatest, baddest, men to ever lace on a pair of boxing gloves[5 ounces].
Dempsey boxed Brennan on his toes and moved around and broke Brennan down!! Dempsey was a GREAT FIGHTER ...
@faltagh what breaks my heart is a cant find high quality footage of Dempsey in action[it did not exist].good clear, proper speed film, would give us legions of new impressed Dempsey fans i think.oh well.
Brennan came to fight. Great fight. I think this is Dempsey at his prime.
thumbs up if you think that dempsey is the most feocious fighter in history
dempsey was cut like steel cords. could you get in any better shape then this guy is at this point in his career.
Good quality film of this match gives you an idea what a handful these two, especially Dempsey were.
Yes sir,he was. There's alot more to a great heavyweight than muscle mass.
Jack was good friends with Bill Brennan,
and was devastated when Bill was murdered in his pub shortly after this bout.
Many who knew him say this was one of the reasons for Jack's
three year layoff before the Tunney fights.
MOST LIKELY PROBABLE, BUT LONG AFTER RETIREMENT, JACK EVEN CAMPAIGNED FOR GENE TUNNEY'S SON WHO WAS RUNNING FOR A POLITICAL PORTFOLIO!!! IN VICTORY/DEFEAT, He NEVER SAID ANY REPULSIVE REMARK ABOUT AN OPPONENT!!!
Great to see Jack in his prime. He could move with his feet not just his hands. Like a heavyweight Roberto Duran but better because Jack threw punches in bunches. (Combinations). Sometimes 5/6/7 or more punches in a row.
Dempsey, out of the ring, was a decent,, warmhearted man liked by many who knew him. Riger Kahn's book on Dempsey is excellent reading.
When Dempsey was literally starving in his early boxing career he was at his best.He had to KO his opponents quickly because his strength would fail quickly without proper nourishment. After he became champion his intake of food was greater,he gained weight & hitting power but his aggressiveness was less.Dempsey's manager coined the phrase "hungry fighter" because of his early want of food.Compare that to today's boxers who are well fed from birth to title & fight much less often.
And when Dempsey was interviewed they asked him if he was afraid of anyone? He said the only thing he was afraid of was going hungry. And many of his early fights was only taken because he did not eat for days on end. As you said the term HUNGRY FIGHTER was exactly who Dempsey was, as the term KILLER INSTINCT, was also a result because of Dempsey. He killed 2 men in the ring, and his savage approach brought a new dimension after years and years of fighters before him that threw 3 or 4 punches a round for 20-40-70-100 rounds. And basically if anyone was at one of these fights, they CERTAINLY found a cure for insomnia!!!! He ushered in the era of excitement and big money gates.
GOOD GOLLY, HARRY!! YOU COMPLETED THE LITANY THERE'S NOTHING LEFT FOR ME TO REMARK...RIGHT on TARGET...BULL"S EYE!!!
Unbelievable how ripped Jack Dempsey was in his prime
yer lookin at old school ripped here in dempsey,u dont see many heavys today this leaned out and naturally hard.i keep seein these short inside shovel hooks, here, which are hurtful as hell.jack could devastate a man with very little punching room at all.of course he knock yer brains out long range too.jack had a strong knack for rendering guys unconcious.
Louis, Johnson, Dempsey, Ali and Jeffries are still the top 5 HWs.
Liston would crush Jeffries
No mention of the great, UNDEFEATED Rocky Marciano?
Take out Jeffries and Dempsey, put Lewis and Foreman
You can see clearly in this bout the punching power of Dempsey. Each one of those blows to Brennan's head or body move him closer to the KO. Dempsey wore down his opponents with every punch until they were ready to be defeated. Very few in boxing history could hit like Dempsey. Adding his toughness, quickness and competitiveness makes him an all-time top 5 HW & all-time top 10 boxer.
Great post. One Dempsey’s best Fights.
i dont think anybody could standup to jack dempsey, fighters are more technical nowadays.back then you had to have grit.
Dempsey reminds me of Roberto Duran
@faltagh Well u wont get any argument from me.im a total Dempsey fan. After reading about Dempsey so much, esp.the Kahn book,Dempsey the complete man ,to me,is absolutely fascinating..The story is unbelievable, his story, the story of a guy that dwarfed Ruth, and Gehrig. There IS NO STORY LIKE DEMPSEYS.Now the fighter issue is another debateable thing, but i also rate him with you as THE GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHT EVER.The man,at his core,at fight time, was a pitiless wrecking ball.mean, durable, hard, perfect.
if he walks away immediately after the Tunney knockdown instead of standing over Tunney the referee could have made the 10 count and Dempsey wins.
Too bad because Dempsey legitimately won that fight. I wouldn't rank Tunmey ahead of Dempsey but it's correct to say that Tuuney was good enough to take advantage of a second chance which he got with the long count.
@CrashBandikoot7 You're right. It's the reason Dempsey would train down to around 190 lbs. Speed and endurance, so he could fight full tilt the whole fight. Watch close and you see Dempsey on his toes more the last two rounds. You see the same in the Tom Gibbons fight, Dempsey increasing the pace in the last 5 rounds. You don't see it today in HW fights.Exact opposite. They can't even fight 3 minute rounds. Size has its disadvantages too.
id love to see that, ali v dempsey.
Brennan gave a good showing.
I think it is partially the way films were shot back then. The film is not good enough or sometimes moves to fast for people to see how good some of these guys were. There is NO DOUBT Dempsey would be Champion today. There was a meanness in him that just isn't around anymore. He was fast, strong, could take a punch and could knock the hell out of you with either hand. A TRUE All Time Great.
And Bill Brennen was no bum. Tough as nails with a lot of good wins to his credit. He was killed a few years later by a mob that said he was buying the wrong beer. He refused to back down and died for it. These were MEN!
Excellent.
Only dopes who know zilch about boxing regard Dempsey as "overrated".. 2012 when rating Best Left Hook all time, Teddy Atlas rates Dempsey # 1 during friday night fights. As already stated, Ray Arcel states Dempsey # 1 all time. Enough said.
I think alot of these old time boxers get underrated because the film quality is not as clear... so when Dempsey shoots one of his murderous jabs and it digs into the cheek of Brennan all we see is an arm go up with no impression of the true speed/power.
Excellent.
@faltagh well that could be.ive always wondered how good willard really was.how good can a guy be when he STARTS BOXING AT AGE 28?guess we'll never really know these answers.i do fully agree that dempsey would push the big russian well beyond whats hes used too with his intense work rate, and inside skills.still never ever faced anyone that big and strong.dempsey by ko round 8
Dempsey chose to fight Brennan whom he'd already beaten, over Harry Greb. Brennan gave him trouble here. Harry Greb had dominated Brennan four times and was chasing a fight with Dempsey. Dempsey wanted no part of Greb after Greb got the better of Jack while working as a sparring partner in Dempsey's preparation for his fight with Billy Miske just three months before this fight. Greb had to settle to beating some common opponents with Dempsey. Battling Levinsky, Billy Miske, Willie Meehan (who beat Dempsey in 1917), Gunboat Smith and Gene Tunney (who beat Dempsey in 1926 and 1927).
"Ali's great defense", hahahahaha.
Looks like they have the same style???
@1saxonwolf Thank You.
is it me or are fighters not as well conditioned as they use to be? look at those shots all the way in round 12. i dont think i've seen that these days
It definitely was the abilities that the best boxers had that put them above the rest. But it’s as if God plays a hand in it where all the greats had a character and personality along with it that made them hero’s. He was the Clark Gable of boxing. A man all the way and a boyishness to go with it, not to mention a great heart.
Yeah, judge a fighter by his record, way to go, you're a real boxing expert.
marcino had great lungs, very good chin & a lot of heart.. but imo he would have a very hard time vrs a 1918-'23 dempsey.. demps had too much hand speed, better feet, better chin, longer reach & even more toughness.. dempsey tko by rd 10
Are they fighting indoors under a skylight?
Tyson fought a lot of bums, slow moving , inept fighters without power who couldn't hit him. He seemed invincible. With serious opposition, Holyfield comes to mind, he was exposed. As Teddy Atlas claimed, Tyson was a street bully without character.
Dempsey fought tough guys, with skill and strength. And he beat them all, including Tunney in that famous long count fight. Dempsey couldn't run but Tunney knew how to stick and jab.
The greatest heavyweight of all time? Dempsey !!
Are they fighting indoors under a skylight?
Heavyweights are just fat now. If you consider better nutrition as an all you can eat buffet.
Dempsey regulary beat guys way bigger than him. But I'd have to agree that Tyson would be a bad match up for Jack. I think of Tyson as a modern version of Dempsey.
@andrewr62 yes,of course.imo you are right.
@faltagh yup, willard doesnt appear on many expert short lists.there is strong evidence that his highly publicized severe injurys, from the dempsey title fight were very exaggerated[thanks to kearns probably].these severe injurys gave rise to the old brick in the glove allegations so often bounced around about jack.pure hogwash btw.its not easy to understand these old timers due to lack of film footage[quality i mean].many were true warrior athletes inevery sense tho, this im very clear about.
Dempsey was an amazing athlete, look at his footwork and movement at 6:40 to 8:00. He sure ate a lot of shots from Brennan though, that low guard is fairly stupid.
@todafacetodaface Mike Tyson was overrated. Who the hell did he ever beat? A washed up Larry Holmes, A blown up light heavyweight in Spinks, after that? Tucker and Ruddock and he struggled with both. He got destroyed by Buster Douglas at the age of 23.
the great thing about dempsey is that he was still fighting hard in the later rounds. what heavyweights now do u see do that? he was constantly on the attack.i wish these 6'3 -6'6 250 lb bitches today would fight that hard.
@Kedbuka obviously im a big Dempsey fan[to say the least]but honestly these super big heavys,i dont know how jack would do[ha no one really does].these guys like klitchko, are not like williard or primo canerra,or any old time super heavys.klitchko is bigger stronger and much more skilled than say a willard, not mention better conditioned.if forced to bet i'd say dempsey, jack would work his way inside sooner or later, and jack was much more EXPLOSIVE.its hard to off set a big skilled guy though.
Styles make fights. Willie Meehan also beat Sam Langford. I suppose you think he was a bum too. Jim Flynn knocked out Dempsey at a time in Dempsey's life were he
was poor, hungry, living in hobo camps. After Kearns took him in, Dempsey destroyed Flynn in 1 round. Flynn to0 was hardly a bum. He had fought unsucessly twice for the heavyweight title.
ACCORDING TO MY JULY 1969 INTERNATIONAL BOXING MAGAZINE, THE STRUGGLING JACK DEMPSEY BATTLED WILLIE FAT MEEHAN IN FRISCO 1917, JACK LOST IN 4 ROUNDS....HOW? NOT INDICATED!
Kemp i agree that you might beat a guy one day and lose another day but you can say someone is better then the other it just means that the circumstances could have just been against the guy that beat him the other day
Sure, rabbit punching, clutching and grabbing constantly but you have to admit that seeing a cut heavy weight is a treat when all we see today are big, fat guys who are slow and ponderous.
They sure loved their rabbit-punches in the old days!
Dempsey lands to the left side of Bill`s body after striking from a crouch at 0.40
Brennan fought clever.
@todafacetodaface After a 3yr layoff and he got robbed in the rematch. A 23 yr old so called great getting crushed by a 42-1 underdog. Yeah, real great. Tubbs ,Trevor Berbick, Tyrell Biggs. Real immortals there. By the way, you know who is a great Dempsey fan? MIKE TYSON, that's who!
@todafacetodaface No, if anything he is underrated.
@dempsey981 Dempsey's ranked as 10th all-time HW by Ring Mag, which is about right to me. At 190lbs, he was as gnarly and bad as they come. I don't give a shit about some 6'7" Ukrainian or whoever they have nowadays as title holder, Dempsey would have torn through them like the pretenders they are. He was a man of steel with hammers in both hands; and he was quite a slick boxer as well. And forget about inside fighting--he was an animal inside. He was a great prizefighter.
ปัตโธะ,,บิล...บาหเรนท์--น่าน......เดียวจะได้เชิญมารับ,มารองเอาไป...มันถ้าจะดีลํ้าไป....ไม่ต้องไปถาม..อเมริกา..
@faltagh Actually, I got that info from Wikipedia so it's questionable. My last Ring Magazine (c. 2000) which rates all the divisions' all-time greats lists Dempsey at No. 5 and Ali at No. 1. Nos. 2 - 4 were Louis, Johnson and Marciano, the latter being so high obviously due to his undefeated record; otherwise, I don't think he makes the top ten. But Dempsey was given his due--I don't think he could handle any of the fighters ranked in front of him except Marciano.
Really? I think he also easily beats Jack Johnson.
@@j.l.4054 NO ONE could've beaten Johnson "easily." He was a master of defense, plus strong, agile and brave. Any HW in history would've had a hard time dealing w him.
1.25 speed
Boxing
@dempsey981 The operative word is "hard" for Dempsey. He was a hard man all the way. Tough, mean and willful. Just a bad, bad dude.
@NoGoodBoyo1000 let me give u an example they rank him above mike tyson. but mike was the youngest heavyweight champ and had more defenses then demspey in half the time. top contenders Carl Morris who has 23 loses and been ko 5 times Bill Miske who has 14 loses, Fred Fulton whos been knocked out 9 times Bill Brennan who has 19 loses this guys are bums. dempsey fought a bunch of bums his whole career if he was around in any other era he would have been destroyed.
@eduardogutierrez521 actually mike tyson had more first round knockouts
haha that pretty much sums it up.
Yep, Dempsey is my number one sports idol, fit and trim. Even moreso after I had the displeasure of watching a BLOATED, DOUBLE CHINNED Chris Arreola claim on Friday Night Fights to be in the best shape of his life......Yucko. Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of the higher weights in most combat sports seem to have a hard time coming in under 20% body fat?
This wouldn't be the same Tyson who looked like Shit against Mitch Green and James Tillis.
Cus or not, when Tyson went past round 4 he turned to shit.
@todafacetodaface Tunney-who he knocked out-Gibbons-Carpentier-Hall of Famers. Dempsey beat them with no significant size advantage.Willard and Firpo were at least as good as Bruno and Bonecrusher. Quick Tillis almost beat Tyson! Those so called bums went into decline after Dempsey ruined them. And I never called Tyson a bum because he wasn't. He ranks as a near great. Dempsey was great. If Dempsey was a bum why did Tyson pattern himself after him? I'm done with you .You're wrong. I'm right.
@todafacetodaface 1] irrelevant 2]That was before he was a serious pro 3]same as before and it was after not eating for 3 days and with no training and it was the only time he was ever stopped 4] Carl Morris, Fred Fulton, Brennan, Bill Miske, all top contenders. Sam Langford called Dempsey the best fighter ever. Ray Arcel said the same.
7
Jack Johnson.
@todafacetodaface I know more about boxing than you ever will. Ray Arcel who worked with greats from Benny Leonard to Roberto Duran and Larry Holmes said Dempsey was the best heavyweight ever and would have beaten Louis and Ali.Sam Langford called Dempsey the best fighter he ever saw. Harry Greb, Mickey Walker, and MIKE TYSON idolized him and you are arguing with them?
I dont see whats so special about this guy his head movement isnt all that great no way he beats ali.. dempsey would be overwhelmed with ali great defense tremedous footwork with his lightning quick jabs!! 5 round tko easy
Brennons grabby style makes for a dull fight
Jack Johnson
@NoGoodBoyo1000 listen to urself ur saying that tillis almost beat tyson demspsey lost 2 fucken bums not almost lost he fucken got smashed. jack demspey was fighting in a weak era its not just about tyson im saying they rank dempsey over tyson frazier foreman holmes all who would have smashed him and fought better fighter the only reason why dempsey ranks so high is beacause he was so popular
@NoGoodBoyo1000 well if you say dempsey was robbed so was tyson who knocked buster down for a 13 count. u have no knowledge of boxing. and which immortal did demspey beat? bums that were knocked out multiple times tyson beat top contenders tucker was 37-0 frank bruno biggs and michael spinks who was 31-0 who did dempsey beat. wasnt demspey knocked down 3 times by luis who was a bum. dempsey is OVERRATED
@NoGoodBoyo1000 underrated dont make me laugh he only had 6 defenses in 7 years. he lost to Willie Meehan 2 times. and was knocked out by a bum is the first round whose the best fighter he ever beat jess willard lol.
Well he did score a few exhibition victories over Max Schmelling, and he beat Schmelling 's rival_ Jack Sharkey by knockout. He also had a victory over Tommy Gibbons, who was a very good fighter.
@faltagh I didn't know Dempsey was 6'3" 215lbs? He must've grown three inches and gained thirty pounds after he passed away.
Ring Magazine rates Ali as the greatest all time. Good enough for me.
@eduardogutierrez521 shannon briggs has more 1st round knockouts then Dempsey
Only because long after his championship class days were behind him he tracked up a long string of 1st round kos against a bunch of hopelessly outclassed club fighters.. Dempsey's ALL came before he was 24.. also nowadays both Willsrd and Firpo would have been stooped in the first.
@bojack335 i can do as i please other people are bringing fantasy into the mix so i can too .. and you say who knows you must be off you medication to say such a thing!!!! who knows get out of here
@faltagh Indeed, Arcel was one of the all-time great trainers. I wonder if he thought his man Benny Leonard would've had a picnic against his man Roberto Duran? In any event, I don't see how Dempsey would've been able to handle 6'3" 215lbs Muhammad Ali, who was cat-quick, took a great shot, delivered sharp-as-hell combos, was as willful as Dempsey, and smarter by a longshot. A picnic against Ali? With all due respect, friend, no way in hell. Ali would've carved him up.
sure,anybody could,its a cinch.esp the slow fat ones,and the great big strong ones[haha]on roids.some would have,but precious few.we wont really ever know.
If you like breakdowns of great fighters like Dempsey, go to my page. Got a full career breakdown of his skills AND weaknesses - RB
founder of ring rated him 2 in 1960,nat fliescher.associated press sports writers, largest block of experts in the world collectively,in 1950 voted best of all time 23 years after his last fight.ray arcel called him best ever and he trained at least 4 world champions.what the fuck was your name?...sorry, never heard of ya.sit down.
@NoGoodBoyo1000 dempsey is overrated
if you like film studies/ breakdowns of the old school fighters like Dempsey, go to my page. We have a full analysis of Dempsey's skills - Reemus Boxing
Thanks for making my point that's hIs overrated yes he was good in his era but nobody was around yer in 1960 rated him num 2 but Ali wasnt champ than. Frazier foreman Holmes Holyfield lewis and Tyson all came later are all better then Dempsey And yet dempsey rates higher than most of them he was good but overrated
gangsters dont like boxers
