This is only 7 years after the Willard fight,
but the film quality, speed and stock seems like decades ahead.

You don't have to worry about getting hit by anyone else. He took his eyes off Dempsey for a split second while Dempsey was still within range.

Sharkey's son stated that of his many foes his dad most admired Dempsey. They were opportunists. Sharkey envisioned an early DQ win while Dempsey saw a conclusive left hook.
After Dempsey retired, Tunney said "He's not the Manassa Mauler, he's the Man Killer." Only a fool would take their eye off of Jack Dempsey in the ring - there's only been one other fighter cut from Dempsey's cloth in the past 100 years (Mike Tyson, who studied Dempsey with Cus D'Amato & emulated/evolved his style for the modern era).

I have Duran as the greatest Lightweight of all time - he also had one of the single greatest wins of all time; beating a prime Sugar Ray Leonard in his own weight class.
He was a devastating puncher, and like Dempsey was an absolutely brilliant infighter. He also had that mean streak that so many other ATG's seem to lack

Often overlooked is what a great chin Dempsey had.
Dempsey a Beast. My favorite fighter of all time. But he was actually just a Cruiserweight by today's standards. Beat alot of true heavyweights. If Dempsey was today and had all the workouts and juices all these fighters have, weight programs, etc. He would be a long running light heavyweight or Cruiserweight beast. Champion.

Not even a cruiserweight. He weight 181 pounds for several fights. That's a super middleweight on fight night by today standards, maybe a small light heavyweight. He would be too small for today's top heavyweights

Apart from Babe Ruth, Dempsey was for years the biggest attraction in sports. He brought real money to the game and made boxing EXCITING. Before Jack you had men throw 3 or 4 punches a round for 40-50-70- 100 rounds. Basically an exercise who could stand up after all those rounds. When Dempsey started his fierce attacks the boxing world came alive. When they asked THE KILLER if he was afraid of anything he said yes BEING HUNGRY (not having any food) which many times happened to him.
in the 20's dempsey was bigger.... modern journalist overlook this out of lack of knowledge. post ww2 they hyped ruth as bigger. yet the reality was during that time dempsey was the biggest thing in sports. he singlehandily created mass gate stadium events in amer live entertainment. jagger before jagger.

Definitely. Dempsey is the sole fighter that put boxing on the map! It was considered amatuer and basically held in fields and clubs with 2 to 5,000 older white men with money beating on them like dog fights. Dempsey took it to Madison square garden and million dollar gates and 100,000 people in attendance and equal to baseball, which was America's #1 sport at that time.

Dempsey had loaded gloves. Factually speaking. He reallly loaded them up against Willard. The man who bandaged his hands at least in the Willard fight Jimmy Deforest explained how he did it. Jimmy Deforest explained how Dempsey had achieved such carnage in so short a time. In 1930 he told Joe Villa of the New York Evening Sun exactly how it happened. “When I handled Kid McCoy, I used to bandage his hands with a certain type of adhesive tape,” DeForest told Vila. “As soon as McCoy drew on the gloves, the tape hardened and, as a result, he was able to inflict unusual punishment. I wound Dempsey’s hands, which Willard inspected. The story that Dempsey wore aluminum pads over his knuckles is a lie. His bandages became hardened, no doubt, and that was why he cut Willard’s face to ribbons.” I
