I target sunfish a lot. I know largemouth, spotted bass and smallmouth are in the sunfish family....but I'm talking about the panfish variety of sunfish. My wife caught the biggest one I've ever seen (1.3lbs and just over 12" long). The girth on the fish in your video is almost unbelievable! Honestly, I'd rather catch a few of these hogs in your video than to fish all day and only come up with an 8lb largemouth. When large gills get sideways, they are little beasts. Really enjoyed this video. I wish more people would do good quality sunfish videos. I regularly catch sunfish in the 9-10" range and they are always a blast. I can't even begin to imagine how much fun this must have been!
I agree with you wholeheartedly! They are very under appreciated. Lets be honest, if a bluegill got to be as big as a 6 lb bass, the bluegill would destroy the bass when it comes to fighting! I am used to catching the 8-9 inchers and being pleased with that, so this was a real treat for me. And I had the choice to fish for big bass or big bluegill here...I guess its obvious what option I chose. I remember casting to some structure, feeling the bite, setting the hook into a 5 lb bass and actually being disappointed about the fact it was taking time away from the bluegill fishing.

I live in Memphis TN. I have a place like this I go to for 2 pound plus bluegill. It's an old River run chute off the Mississippi River near Tunica Mississippi. It's actually called Tunica cutoff. When the River reaches flood stage here in Memphis in the Spring it will back into the cutoff. It keeps the fishing source loaded with the nutrients that make for huge fish.
As a boy12 yrs. Old setting on the banks of my favorite lake all by myself doing what I love FISHING ,when hooked a large heavy fish fighting hard swimming down to to bottom and doing everything to stay there.mud swirling line real and today straining as I was to . I after a 5 min. Struggle got sight of it covered with mud I thought it was a carp ! Taking out the water and washing it off , holy sh*t it's a blue Gill at least 18" long and about 4lbs caught in the moment near in tears my catch had been witnessed two pairs of fishermen on the banks 75 yds across from me ...screaming save it ...trophy one guy screams world record ! Looking at this miracle in my hands I could not think of it as a stiff stuffed prize. It's blue gold purple metallic scales had to live to make more memories of wonder for the next wild eyed boy with a fishing story to tell .
@@mason.n3259go to Michigan then. I’m in Michigan and most my fish where blue Gail’s. I used small worm pieces and small shrimp pieces they like shrimp.
The size of these bluegills is insane. I'm in my 60s and have never seen anything in this size and weight range anywhere for bluegills. "Oh my mercy!" I would love to fish with you and your dad.
I enjoyed watching you handle the fish with care and returning them back to their habitat unharmed. Your comment that it was an honor to catch the fish. Didn't go unnoticed. I shared this on FB because you really did a good job.
During last summer I was at a friends lakehouse and I sat in freezing cold water and waited for three hours and netted two bluegill one of them (probably the female) was around 1.4 lbs and 13.5 inches and the male was around a pound and just over 12 inches. What an amazing time, im tired of people trashing bluegill they are truly amazing fish
Wow! Very impressive! Lucked up by chance on lake Hartwell in upstate SC and got into giants like these with crickets about 15 deep, I could not believe how massive and how hard they fought! 5 ft ultralight rods with 4lb test and listened to the reels screaming for mercy! Best part of all was how great these guys taste! Best freshwater fish on the planet to eat! Tarter sauce me please!!!
Speaking of good 'Ol South Carolina, the place I mentioned is between Columbia and Sumter on Arnold Rd. Right in front of the McIntire Air National Guard base off of highway 378. It's the first pond on the right. Our home burned down on December 13, 1963 (Friday 13th) and I have yet to see the 'Gills compared to the sizes of those Big Boy's.
Nice video my friend! I am quite impressed at not only the size of Bluegill you caught there but also by the dark coloration, especially that big male at 11:45. Wow what a sunfish! Nicely done presentation. Thumbs way up!
Best bluegill video ever! I'm from Michigan and I dream of catching one of that quality some day. Your enthusiasm along with some "toad gilly's" had me...well...wanting to get out there!
I am not sure I even remember the last time that I was watching a youtube video and heard the "drag" on a reel. Nice to know I am not the only one that enjoys the fight as well as the fish. So many people I see, set the hook like they are trying to pull a rusty nail through rhino hide, and then slingshot it up on the bank or the boat like they think they are in a big money tournament. Those are some amazing fish you are catching there. My biggest bluegill is half the weight of the ones that you were catching there. Gotta find me a spot like that!
haha that made me laugh out loud man! a rusty nail through a rhino hide! But in all seriousness, I have a soft spot for fighting hard fighting fish on light line. fighting these bluegill on 4 pound test is a huge adrenaline rush for me! Good to know there are others who appreciate it just the same!
I thought the same thing today when fishing for bass on a paddletail swimbait-- I nice 6 lb channel cat (big for my pond) hit it on my medium light action rod spooled with 6lb test. Now I remember why I got into the sport of fishing. It's all for the fight!
sainstfisherman, you must not catch many big bass, otherwise you would know why some of the RUclips fishermen set the hook so hard. When you are fishing in lakes with potential 10+ pounders, you don't mess around while setting the hook. It only looks ridiculous when they bring up a 2 pounder, but they have no idea what size fish is hitting that hook when they go to set it, so better safe than sorry. Now, many lakes simply don't produce anything much over 4lbs, so those lakes you can back off a little on the hook set.
I have a cousin who has a pond on his property in Michigan . Over the last 40 years I’ve been fishing it everytime I visit from California. He also used to have a creek that went under an old RR Bridge that was fun to fish, but someone poisoned the waters up stream killing everything off. You really had to watch the snapping turtles under that bridge, but I digress. His pond has gone through a lot of phases being mostly Catfish to Big Mouth Bass to Crappie & Blue Gill . They have Hugeeee Crappie & Blue Gill. I throw everything back I catch. Sometimes I catch a smaller Blue Gill & will just let him run loose then a Big Mouth will come up & swallow him & I get to play him for a while until I’m tired of it & pull the Blue Gill out of his mouth while I’m still fighting him bring the Blue Gill in take it off the hook & set it free. Awesome Fun.
i loved this video. Watching you release MONSTER blue gill was well worth it. You didn't just toss them back, you nurtured them back. Gotta love that! I subbed for that.
I really appreciate the comment! thank you so much! I like to take the time to make sure the bigger ones are all set before they head back down to the depths!
Nice gills! That hybrid mount is cool too! My uncle and i used to fly fish with these peety poppers and crush big green eared sunfish! The green eared got teeth too, little crawfish crushers! Fishing the Hudson river N.Y. We never even knew they were their before or would bite like that. They were tons of fun fish for. Small rocky island with just a little current near a bridge. Beautiful color too clean! Top water gills who knew? Lol... Fish on!

I've never seen or heard of the need to net bluegill, but geez oh mighty those are some monsters. My PB is around a pound but the ones you were catching were twice as big. It must feel like reeling in a hubcap.
These little buggers are really line shy too, so I was using 4 lb line, therefore I almost had to use a net to bring them in the boat! Thanks for watching Carl! a 1 pound gill is still a big gill no doubt!
They do very well in the southern Appalachian mountain lakes. Quite a few are self supportive where they have rivers long enough to support spawning. The climate up there is close to what you would find up in the Maryland or Ohio region. Small mouth are abundant and Ohio musky are native. Tiger musky are stocked in a few lakes and rivers but no northern pike native or introduced.
I'm with you on this one for sure I have always said if bluegill regularly got up to even 4 or 5 pounds, people would be like what is a bass? Nothing fights any better.
My fishing friend irritates me. He always exaggerates the weight of his fish! He caught a large gill from my pond and tells everyone it weighed 3 pounds. It was a giant but really about 1 3/4 lbs at most. Oh how i wish i would have weighed it!
@@crazycajunj1703 My friend & I used to go down to the James River on our bikes. We'd find fishing line, we'd find hooks, we'd find some lead, then we'd go dig some worms & catch a bunch of bluegill.
Fished there in 2012. Great place. Used a 4-weight fly rod and caught over 30 coppernosed bluegill up to 3-1/2 pounds. Caught one Redbreast that was just at 18 inches long. Well worth the trip. At the time I went you were required to fish with one of their guides. I would love to slip my kayak in and do my own thing.
My father would have been 87 and all I remember him going after was these. He would have been very pleased to have gotten in to a mess like these, and I would have wonted to have been right there with him. Thanks for tha memories
Amazing I have never seen pan fish that big. I gotten close couple times but those must b good eating coming from such a clean place appreciate the hard work great content. Takes me away from this crazy life even if it is a short time. Thanks and till the next one brother. Primo
I can hold a 26" walleye out with my arms extended fully and stick a camera as close to it as I can and you will beleive it's 30 plus, hold a thirty down close by my leg sideways and you'll call it an eater
Back in the day...(prior to President Kennedy being assassinated) my dad and I would use our homemade John-Boat in our 8-acre pond and fish with crickets and night-crawlers. This was from 1960 to '63 and we would catch the same size Bluegill as you are doing in this video...2 lbs. +. I stopped back by the old place after 22 years in the USMC, after the kids, and Grandkids were all grown and I reminisced of 'Days-Gone-By". Using a cane-pole, the Bluegill are so thick and heavy that they caused the pole to start cracking and splintering up, and my stringer got so heavy that I had to drag it back to my truck. Keep up the Great times you are having my brother. Glad to see that some folks still know how to set things right.
Panfish are like big rudders by nature. Awesome fun! I live in the middle of the city (Raleigh) & I love catching them in all of the little creeks around here.
I target sunfish a lot. I know largemouth, spotted bass and smallmouth are in the sunfish family....but I'm talking about the panfish variety of sunfish. I was just looking in the comments to see if I'm the only one who thought that lmao.
You know it’s serious when he’s using a landing net for bluegill
Another reason isn’t because there big it’s because of how hard it is to get a truly solid hook set with their tiny moths

@@crazycajunj1703 My friend & I used to go down to the James River on our bikes. We'd find fishing line, we'd find hooks, we'd find some lead, then we'd go dig some worms & catch a bunch of bluegill.
That doesn’t surprise me bc I have caught the same sized gills
I'm fishing a spot that has some REALLY big Gills and this gave me new ideas. SIK SIK fishing Bud keep it up, tight lines.
Glad to hear that mate!! Lmk if you get on em!!!
Spectacular video. Immediately goes on my bucket list.
I've caught bluegill on shad raps in NC man, they're predators here.
Thats wild, man! something about NC waters maybe? such a fun fish!
I have one in my 120 gallon aquarium he's about 4 years old now
dperry428 he has videos as proof....why don’t you stop hating and get a life.
@@uAintliveifudontthiz he hasn't posted them
At $600 a day do they let you keep any to mount?
Cruzinon22s You don't need to keep a fish to mount it, just the length, girth, and a few high quality pictures will suffice for the taxidermist.
Cruzinon22s nope. Everything is catch and release there.
Cruzinon22s $600 a day to fish that lake he was fishin?
kushcrumbleshatter1990 yup look it up
Cruzinon22s damn i just took a look at their website, that's nuts.
Crazy big fish. Amazing video
Much appreciated, Melissa!
imagine these gills on a fly rod!
That would be a blast!
You should try it
Some dude ya that would be awesome
Matthew Jones that would be awesome
Just wondering Who would put thumbs down on this , looks like a good time to me.
Mike Clontz probably the same guy that said he looked up the place on website and found out that it cost 600$ a day to fish there
Gregory Grayson can you keep them?
I live less than 20 min from this place in Richmond County. This video is about as close as I'll get to actually fishing there. Too rich for my blood.
Mike Curtis what state is this lake in and how much does it cost to fish there?
Solomon Forbes aboit $600 per day
I’m with you Mike. I rather fish the Pee Dee for free.
Solomon Forbes it's in Laurel Hill, NC, which is south central NC, near the SC border. As noted with the other comment, it's $600 per day
Okcuse Norton only difference is, they don't grow that big in the Pee Dee, lol. Now, catfish on the other hand....
Incredible fishing man, truly. Those are some giant bluegill.
Thanks for watching Taylor!
Awesome vid. Can easily see the appreciation of the fish with the process of how you put them back in the water. Much respect
🙏🙏 very tired of all the comments about why I didn’t eat them....thanks for noting the release!
Since you like bluegills so much, I'm sure you're aware of the world record - 4 lbs 12oz. Maybe you'll be the one to break that record.
@Tommy Yuckguts I'm pretty sure that was a Redear. Might be wrong though
@@creeksquadnation2129 it was a redear. 6.3 pounds and 17 inches!!!!!!!!
Never seen someone net bluegill. You must be using like 4lb line to be netting bluegill
teb when your paying 100$ a hour u can’t afford to be loosing fish lol
Johnredcorn 1 thats true
yes it was 4 lb line
Has anyone ever just sat on a pier with a cane pole and just caught bluegill. If you haven't I highly recommend it.
Serenity!
We had them this big on Center Hill Lake but to see this many caught would take weeks! Nice video
Thanks Buck Shot!
My father would have been 87 and all I remember him going after was these. He would have been very pleased to have gotten in to a mess like these, and I would have wonted to have been right there with him. Thanks for tha memories
Thank you for watching!!
WOW!!! 10 star bluegill .however I must confess,I would have loved to filet those giants.
Thanks for watching Christopher!!
@Bradley Faucett fr
Wow nice but you guys must don't like how theses fish taste because no way they will be going back
When they get this big they're better off swimming than being eaten! Just my opinion!
It's a very expensive pay lake, man... catch and release only!
Randy Oney you don't know wat I catch dummy
Damn right. In some hot ass Crisco. I don't throw back blue gill like this. Plus at 600 a day, they should throw in the boat. That's crazy as hell.
Their better than bass.
That's the first time I've ever heard "YES A BLUEGILL" lmao
Thanks for watching man!
I would rather catch bluegill that size any day than bass. The fight is way better.
Amazing I have never seen pan fish that big. I gotten close couple times but those must b good eating coming from such a clean place appreciate the hard work great content. Takes me away from this crazy life even if it is a short time. Thanks and till the next one brother.
Primo
Looks like loads of fun. Nice video, finally saw what you were using for bait. Thank you for sharing this great stuff!
Those things are massive
They really are man...kinda scary big. the thickness....
I can hold a 26" walleye out with my arms extended fully and stick a camera as close to it as I can and you will beleive it's 30 plus, hold a thirty down close by my leg sideways and you'll call it an eater
That's how he gets subscriber's .
What a giant ! Just subbed bacm
Thanks Miss, much appreciated!
Yah great video sunfish are a blast to catch they fight harder than most for their size keep up great videos
Some super THICK bluegills! Damnit man!!!
Who doesn't take the plastic wrap off their rod fishing a 600 dollar a day pay lake LOL
Silvio Manuel zionism comments in a fishin vid. Amazing how prolific u idiots are.
Catching caged fish on a private stocked fish. What an angler.
Giants brother WOW!!! Dropped a sub!
Thanks Maniac!
330 MaNiaC nice
Back in the day...(prior to President Kennedy being assassinated) my dad and I would use our homemade John-Boat in our
8-acre pond and fish with crickets and night-crawlers.
They are! Crazy powerful! Thanks for watching!
I like to go fishing in New york
30 minutes from where I live I have to try my luck
shiiiit its 1200 a day for 2 people to fish there
The drag on that spinning reel. It ain’t made for gills that size
Nice video man love your videos keep up the good work and those bluegills we're huge
Those were some monster Gill. Enjoyed the video for sure. Fish on!
Thanks Vance I appreciate it man!
