    The Kino automotion exposure mode just sets the shutter angle to 180 by alowing for auto ISO, but when there's too much light it will let go of the shutter angle. The automotion exposure system combined with the locked exposure/wb on recording whilst keeping you informed with the green text is basically the perfect run and gun system and to be honest every camera app should mimic it.

    Kino is the professional app for the rest of us. The automation exposure, when combined with a VND gives you 180° control without getting lost in the weeds. Kino’s LUTs are top notch and can be baked in durning recording - but can also be applied to any clip in your Photos app regardless of which app they were recorded on. My only complaint about the Black Magic app is overwhelming amount of head’s up information that can distract the filmmaker from the job at hand - making beautiful images.

    The thing I love about Kino is the ability to pull my phone out and shoot LOG footage as if it was through the native camera app, not stressing about settings. Just point and shoot but without needing to opt for the massive HQ ProRes files. I use ProRes LT through Kino and I've found that it's more than enough for family and travel videos.
    Blackmagic will always be the better professional camera app for filmmaking, but Kino fills a gap for me that I've always wanted in a phone!

      I second this.. also with Final Cut Pro camera app new update.. as of today i can now put it in the same category with these two apps surprisingly

    Blake, I’m interested in your thoughts of Final Cuts newest updates to A) the iPad interface, but maybe more so to B) the camera apps newest updates. Especially after this video you published about Kino and BMC apps. I wonder if the tier would be Final Cut more casual, the Kino, the BlackMagic?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah I think that’s the order. Final Cut Camera and Kino are similar, and I like that you can now see a LUT in FCC and can record HEVC Log, but Kino I like the 180 degree shutter option. Then in FCC you have focus peaking with Log. So they’re kind of a toss up with BMD at the top. Have to say also Cinema P3 is doing some good things too.
      I haven’t used the latest FCP. I’m a Premiere Pro user, but I do have FCP and LumaFusion for occasional work.

    Nice walkthrough of software - but I would love an actual test of the two apps and how end results turns out (like for stabilization, different compression modes etc.). This doesn't decides what's "BEST" - but only how they differentiates in features and UX.

    Hello, first of all thanks for your work, yours is one of the best channel for iphone videographers. Wich app you recomend me to take low light videos. I work in music festivals and need to know wich is better to take videos during the night time in festivals, to shoot the stage, for example. If you can give some tips to do it i will apreciate too much. Thanks a lot

      I would probably use the Blackmagic camera app as it’s not only free, but has great manual control to set your ISO, etc. The main thing to remember is it’s the phone and its camera/lens/sensor that really determines low light performance. So if you’re shooting with iPhone make sure and use the main 24mm camera as it’s the best in low light. Then in the app keep your ISO as low as possible to avoid too much noise. On newer phones I’d try to stay at 400 or lower if possible. You can definitely go higher if required, but you’ll often get too much noise (and then probably need to denoise in post). Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    2:52 the Blackmagic Camera App record 32bit float audio, that might be why you don’t have to manage the audio level

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  2 месяца назад

      Using standard PCM audio, so can’t control it because it’s on the iPhone mic only.

    It would be so dope if Blackmagic would put a mini version of the color page in the app! Like if you click on a video in the Media page. There should be an option to color grade the video! Copy & paste the edits and film look creator would be pretty cool to do on the phone lol I ask way too much.. but i think it will come eventually

      Interestingly FiLMiC Pro used to have something very similar to that in earlier versions of their app, but they discontinued it. But could definitely come in handy.

    I've been testing video camera apps on a new 16 pro and really like Kino for quick point and shoot stuff, but there's an annoying bug - in manual mode I'm finding it really tricky to tap the speed / angle selectors - 9 times out of 10 nothing happens. I checked this on an iphone 13 and it was the same, but is fine on an ipad (even though the UI is smaller than the screen). Anyone else noticing this? I've written to the developers and they say it's being investigated... Anyway, for more 'pro' work, I think I've settled on Cinema P3 - it's not the cheapest option if you want the full pro features and LUT support - both IAPs), but there's a whole lot of power under the hood, the GUI is nicely laid out (and customisable) and the results have been amazing...

      Yeah, it's like you have to tap EXACTLY in the right spot, or else it won't come up. I also have that same problem when changing focal lengths, like from .5X to 1X, for example. It's very nit picky, but I love Kino, as its so easy and frustration free to shoot with.

    Having a number of issues with Blackmagic on my iPhone 16 pro max, first when recording with the ultra wide 13 mm the recorded video jumps constantly making it totally unusable and secondly when I set the shutter to the 180 angle it constantly reverts to 360 and finally I find the image stabiliser less affective than the native phone app stabiliser. Any one else having these issues, I’d be interested to know and any suggestions would be welcome, thanks

      On a Blackmagic forum other people and myself included, noticed this with the 13mm lens when the stabilizer is on but more importantly with the 120mm lens with stabilizer on also. Hopefully Blackmagic will fix this.

      It’s evidently an issue on the Apple side that’s affecting more than just Blackmagic, but yeah those are current issues with 16 users.

      It’s along the lines of Blackmagic. I really like it too, but I find the menus & interface a little bit less user-friendly.

    How would you compare Kino & Blackmagic Camera apps to Cinema P3 Pro Camera app?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah maybe. To me Cinema P3 is definitely in the realm of Blackmagic, I just think Blackmagic has a more streamlined and easier to use interface and menu system - but they’re both very good apps.
