At first I was hesistant because i feel Cinema P3 was the better app so far. But this cleaner menu ui is very attractive since I get a bit confused sometimes with p3
This is helpful, thanks. After the Filmic pricing change, it was one of your videos that led me to another camera app. That app has been problematic lately. I feel like I’m being bullied into yet another app. So these tutorials are helpful.
I still like and use other apps too, especially CinemaP3 - and Filmic Pro some as well. But this app being free is a bonus and the UI is so simple and user friendly that I’ve really started using it the most. Thanks for watching!
Sometimes when using Blackmagic Camera app with an external mic the audio can be a little out of sync. It's a great app but still needs a little work. Like everybody, I'm not happy with the FiLMiC Pro pay model changes, but currently it does have a few more features than Blackmagic so I still prefer it.
Audio features are definitely the weakest part of the BMD app, no question. And it’s still buggy too. The rumor is there’s a big update coming in a few weeks at NAB which will include improved audio features & monitoring. I was diehard Filmic Pro user, but the simple UI on the BMD app has recently really swayed me in their direction.
With a phone, almost never. Really just mainly need them on day exteriors in bright sunlight. There are exceptions like if you’re shooting with bright sunlight coming in a window or that kind of thing, but again with the phone pretty rarely. On a traditional camera I do routinely but that’s a different setup for opening the aperture to get more shallow depth of field (but that doesn’t work with a phone).
This looks great definitely getting the course!!! Im looking to build a rig for my iphone but would like to be able to use anamorphic lenses and an nd filter (simultaneously) while also using a cage with an ssd, battery and whatnot, im a bit lost though because smallrig offers the brandon li ofcourse but jm looking to futureproof my purchases a bit by buying the universal one but unsure which phone case or brand to go for for a way to attach the lenses because i dont want to be stuck using 1 companies lenses… Any suggestions which route to go?
If you want to go to Universal you might look at the Beastgrip Pro. It has a lens mount that you can put on or take off and it’s 37mm, so then you could adapt it to 17mm too. Or, what I’ll do is just take the lens mount off and that way you have a “half cage” and can use whatever case you want, thus any lens brand you want. I’ve got a link in the description although it may be unavailable on Amazon right now, but I’ll find another link and update it. Hope you like the course!
I'm looking forward to their next major update where they'll hopefully add the few missing features available on other apps. As is, this is ALMOST a perfect application.
You can do it either way. But to get the highest quality images it’s often good to use the main 24mm camera and then attach a lens to that one. Especially in lower light as it has a largest/fastest and best sensor.
I’ve been using the Mavis app to record open gate video (4000x3000) for a while but I really wish blackmagic offered it. Let’s make this happen guys. It’s so convenient for shooting footage that ends up on RUclips as well as vertical content. I think it would be a pretty simple update for them.
I get the motion blur aspect, if you are shooting movement, you need to lock the shutter angle. But what if I am doing a run and gun shoot and end up indoors, filming someone stationary next to window light, very little movement (maybe just their hands moving as they talk?) Do I just go full auto for sake of nailing the exposure? Or do I still consider the movement blur and lock shutter?
I wouldn’t shoot full auto because likely then the window would be exposed and the subject would be underexposed, but in that situation you wouldn’t have to worry about an ND filter and typically the app does a pretty good job keeping the shutter around 180° when indoors. You could just touch the screen and auto expose like that but then lock that. The main thing to keep in mind is shoot with a low ISO, that’s another reason not to use full auto as it will often crank that up and get noisy.
I have been following your guide - newbie here! I have imported a lut to Blackmagic camera app and selected “record lut to clip” - however if I try to share the video to stories in Instagram it shows it without the lut applied and I’m unsure why? Anyone able to help?
@@iphoneographers yes that’s correct. If I upload to tiktok or view in my photo folder the lut is visible - but if add the video to Instagram stories it removes the lut and is all dull colours
I have just discovered the Blackmagic camera app, as I am using my wife’s old iPhone (I’m normally an Android guy) The app seems pretty good but I am wondering whether there is a pause button, for use during filming. I find it a very useful feature, as it prevents any changes during the video process.
There is no pause, although I would imagine they’ll add that one day as other apps like FiLMiC Pro have that feature. It’s not something I ever used much in the past, but I know some people do find it useful.
My goal is to use my iPhone 15 pro as the camera for a vlog/podcast (guest interview style). I have 2 Blue Yeti x mics. (Host/guest) The Blackmagic app recognizes the 2 Yeti I mics but is only picking up sound from one mic. Mics are plugged into a Lention 10gbps hub. Hub directly to phone. I want a portable studio I can take on the road/airline etc and just one pelican case. Trying to keep the parts to a minimum. Am I doing something wrong??
I’m not familiar with that hub, but the best way I’ve found to get two channels of audio into an iPhone is using the RODE AI micro… ruclips.net/video/ei-KacFfzR8/видео.htmlsi=RpdtxS5H-6JxQvZl Or potentially using a setup like this, which may be similar to what you have, and it’s really better for sending video and audio simultaneously ruclips.net/video/7JNtt3-F4bw/видео.htmlsi=wRsSyeInvrG8OZ4o
Can the Black Magic app flip the GUI 180 degrees, like the Cinema P3 app, Filmic Pro etc? Sometimes I need to flip the phone 180 degrees to be able to balance a heavy anamorphic lens on a mini gimbal.
You have both options to record either. However, keep in mind that all smartphones record VFR and so sometimes the frame rate is not 100% exact. But then in editing, if needed, you can interpret the footage to the desired exact frame rate.
7:34 I love the app… but is so buggy… and the fact that you can not have AUTO ISO when you lock the shutter is so frustrating and annoying. I honestly do not understand why has this limitation. Also, many times, AWB stops working
Yes there are some bugs, with audio too. But the app is still very new all things considered. Rumor is there’s a big update coming at NAB in a few weeks that will fix and improve a lot of stuff, including audio.
I have the 15 ProMax and I can't get the app to record to my SSD attached to the usb C port. I've tried three different SSDs and am using a thunderbolt cable. Any suggestion?
Have you tried a different cable? Also, do you have it setup correctly within the BMD app? You might try using the native camera app since it auto connects and see if it works there.
@@iphoneographers It does record to the SSD with the native camera app. I have used different cables and SSD drives. I've looked in the BMD app for a setting but can't find anything on recording destination memory. Have I missed it? Thanks for your help.
You have to manually select where to record the files in the BMD app. I go over that in this video (about half way or so into it)… ruclips.net/video/Pr3DqO-NOG8/видео.html
@@iphoneographers Thanks so much for the answer and the video! I just couldn't find the setting and it's working great now that you pointed me in the right direction!
I really would like if they would include Apple's Cinematic Mode since Apple opened it to developers last WWDC and be able to edit in Resolve the Cinematic mode like we can in FCP.
Yeah I’ve seen that. It’s a little bit misleading because you never want to shoot that high in most situations. Outdoors in bright light with an ND you could definitely give it a try. But if you do that anywhere else and especially in low light you’ll have very noisy footage. I don’t typically recommend shooting over 400 ISO.
Could you create a comprehensive video guide tailored for serious iPhone filmmakers aiming for theatrical release or OTT platforms? It should cover everything from camera rigs, lenses, external gear like batteries and memory cards, external mic, storage to post-production elements, lighting setups, vehicle mounts, improvised jibs, improvised tools for shot making, drone effect shots, sliders ..gimbals, depth of field (DOF), vintage or manual lenses, and more. Essentially, an all-in-one solution for filmmakers looking to optimize their iPhone filmmaking experience
I’ve done that to a degree with a Smartphone Cinematography course I have on my website, however more geared towards beginners. But it covers a lot of these topics. I’ve played with the idea of doing a more advanced version and that’s probably where this would fit in, but those are some good suggestions. Now with the 15 Pro and also Apple log I think more people will use phones in narrative fiction as both main cameras and B cameras, so I will definitely consider it!
