- From May 2000, Glen Campbell & Jimmy Webb talk with hosts Meredith Vieira & Star Jones about their history together, and perform a seriously gorgeous, heavenly rendition of "Wichita Lineman".
Good Grief.......did anyone else wind up with tears in their eyes while watching this? Jeeez, I'm a 65yo man, and it broke me up.
Absolutely ❤️
I agree with you 💯
Almost. What a talent we've lost.
I started watching this in the car, and finished in the grocery store with airpods in my ears and tears in my eyes, while standing by the frozen chicken. I was overwhelmed. We're never gonna see talent like this again, and I so miss Glen's voice, it was like honey. Jimmy Webb is a monster and the two of them were unbeatable.
A voice like honey...very nicely put. This song always moves me. I've not heard this version before. Lovely
I'm tearing a bit, good stuff
The 'frozen chicken' was on point. If you can stop and ignore frozen chicken, you are on the moon. 😊😊🫶✌✌
Well said.
Jimmy Webb is a musical genius. This song has never aged!
My father was a farmer, he wasn't a really big music person, he said this was the most beautiful song he ever heard, my father died in 1969. It's amazing how songs can have such an effect on people. I am glad I found this video.
Wow. You lost your papa so long ago. I'm glad he liked this beautiful song and I hope you think of him whenever you hear it. All the best to you.:)
Jimmy Webb is a genius.
your dad might not have been a big music person, but when it came to naming a great song, he didnt fuck around.
Music is like that.
I’ve loved this song since my college days back in the 1960’s. That line “I need you more than want you and I want you for all time” still tears my heart out.
One of the best lines ever written. Ole Bill Shakespeare could not beat it.
You are absolutely correct. It has the quality of any really great line - it’s subtle but strong, arrives unexpectedly, and is immediately unforgettable. haunting the listener forever.
One of the greatest songs ever written, or performed. RIP, Glen Campbell, one of the best.
"And I need you more than want you... And I want you for all time..." Wichita Lineman. Thank you Jimmy Webb and Glenn Campbell. Rest in peace Glenn 🙏🙏🙏 Memories of my high school days just come rushing by and it's October 19, 2024
Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb. Way too much talent packed into two people. Thank you both for the gifts you gave us.
They were made for each other, no doubt about it.
He came to our city for his last tour. He had a teleprompter to help him with the songs. The audience was with him and for him. It took great courage to do what he did. He was a class act.
So good that he had the support to keep playing----when dementia affects memory and remembering words to communicate---most people still remember the music of songs they have sung in their life----so he still could play his music -----
and we enjoyed hearing it---- right up till the end.....
Was that napa?
I was a kid about 12 years old when I became aware of Glen Campbell. I was trying to play guitar and knew how great what I was hearing really was. He blew me away and though my musical direction was different I always listened to him play. One of the best things I ever heard was Glen playing "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes it gave me chills. I cried when I watched his documentary and again when I heard he passed. Talents like his are a rare and wonderful thing
God Blessed Glen with the ability to bring joy to many.
Here in Glasgow I had a friend, a sound engineer who worked with him on his last tour. He told me Glen was fine if he had the song list on a laptop in front of him. There’s footage of Glen, obviously ill from dementia, playing and doing a brilliant solo.
@@alexbowman7582 he had an innate ability about himself to keep pushing on..thinking how he could still play those great songs and wanted to give his fans a farewell tour. He was a 5 star talent, his singing was spectacular , may have been the greatest guitar player of em all , had a number one ranked TV variety show , could relate stories mostly self deprecating that'd have me rolling on the floor laughing , and dang it he got to make a movie with John Wayne !!
The women , old or young loved the guy including my Mom who once said he could put his shoes by her couch anytime , I nearly fell over when Ma said that. Glen , Buck Owens and Merle Haggard I believe Ma would have molested em..lol..
Has there ever been a more haunting melody? This is a piece of America right here
One of the greatest lyrics EVER!! "And I need you more than want you...……..And I want you for all time!"
Ikr? Guts me every time. They don't write it like that no more.
Need > want
Want = Infiniti
Right. That's what GC said.
Cuts right to the heart every time I hear it.
Agree
Whatever the 10 greatest songs of the 20th century may be, this song is in that top 10!
Agree!
This song is eerily beautiful. It never gets old.
@Be Kind.......Love your name, AND you're correct....One of the very few masterpieces that will ever get "old". Fifty years later it still brings a smile (and a handful of memories) to me......and if I may be presumptuous, to all of us.
@@nocheteipsum You are so right. It's up there with Bobby Goldsbro's "Summer, the first time". Another extraordinary song that springs to mind. Have a blessed day 🙏
@@1e0s You too @1e03, have a blessed day.
You are damn right.
It makes me think I missed something by not living in the Southwest. Just as the Beach Boys always made me want to get to California. Never made either for long. Michigander.
Glen singing Jimmy's songs was perfection. RIP Glen Campbell.
Never gets old. Impossible to over play that song. Perfection.
Meredith! Back when this show was normal and not toxic.
The show is just indicative of the times. It was recorded before 9-11 and before the SC stole the election and the deficit was actually a surplus. In other words, good times.
One of the most brilliant guitarists and singers of all time. MUCH RESPECT TO GLEN.
Just think, every great guitar lick on a beach boys album was played by him.
Fantastisk mennneske
@@vint7054 I did not know hat. Cool!
respect to Webb also. sick song
@@vint7054 Not every lick. Glenn was just a part of the wrecking crew.
Hey! Remember when people were nice to each other??
No, would you tell me of those days? Days of long ago. 😢
We still are.
Fourth version I’ve listened to tonight and my eyes are blurry for the fourth time. Perfection.
Y😢😢😢es!
Glen is such a pro. He answers her question about himself only long enough to be polite to her, then he segways selflessly to introduce Jimmy Webb and lets the light shine on him. Anyone who had the chance to work with him loved him for that modesty. Yet he had more talent than anyone.
Giving credit where it is due - Jimmy Webb - outstanding songwriter! Delicious!! Two Icons!!!
Glen Campbell a great guitarist all around musician teamed with Jimmy Webb one of our best songwriters. Glen could bring out Webb's emotions of a song like no one else.
Guitar and vocals, what a talent! And Jimmy Webb's songs - brilliant!
What a song. What a voice. What a guitarist.
Glen Campbell was a much sought after studio musician for years before he became well known on his own - was always very talented.
Campbell didn't write the song.
What a great pianist!
@@pockynon Glen was a member of the legendary Wrecking Crew. He played on so many massive hits and great records like Pet Sounds. Long before he was known as a solo artist. He played for Elvis, Sinatra. the Righteous Brothers, the list goes on and on.
This is the song that paints the ideal musical vision. You can see someone on the power lines in the hot relentless sun. The yearning the the lyrics are just so perfect. Plus that little morse code piano tapping is so eerie and evocative. When I first heard this on the local radio in Detroit...it just sort of broke my year. Beautiful!!!Plus..Glen's voice..just so fits the lyrics. And let's not forget Webb's contribution...just...Stellar.
piano is never too loud .. especially when Jimmy webb is at the controls.... genius... and glen is so good..
YOU ARE MISSED MR. CAMPBELL!!
A perfect combination of songwriting and performance. I don’t think the folks in the audience realize they were witnessing one of the greatest creations of all time. Live. .... Thanks Jimmy! RIP Glen. Thanks for the memories.
Loving this in 2020. It doesn't get any better than the collaboration of Jimmy Webb and Glen Campbell. Feel like I've died and gone to heaven.
Impressive how jimmy is such a great pianist!!!
Why? The man is 100% musician.
MacArthur Park, what else is there to say. A legend Jimmy Webb
Gone is one of the greatest of our time, I first bought an album in 1969 and have never gotten over the magic of GLEN CAMPBELL make music wherever you are Glen
God Bless.
Miss you Glen. Jimmy Webb and Carol King, two greatest writers of our lifetime.
Certainly two of them.
RIP Glen ... you were the best !
there are no words to describe what I just heard
Man, I just dreamed every time I heard this song back in the '60s listening on the AM radio in my car. FM wasn't readily available back then if ya can believe it!
This performance gave me the chills. So beautiful. Webb is a genius, and RIP Glen.
This was the perfect bromance when it comes to an incredible songwriter and singer. To see 2 men care so deeply towards each other, and it's genuine, closer than brothers, but not gay either. It's such a beautiful thing. I love a man who can be strong, yet vulnerable. I love seeing interviews with Jimmy and Glen because of how they compliment each other. The more I listen to Glen speak, I am listening for things that might be interpreted as early Alzheimer's. I wish I could know when my mom's began. It was a long time before we truly knew what was going on. It wasn't until dad died that my sisters and I realized she wasn't just forgetful. I miss Glen, but all it takes are a few strokes on the keyboard and there he is, so young and vibrant.
Jimmy is such a great pianist too ! R I P brother Glen . Keep in practice up there !
When I was eleven my Mother got me a guitar and a Glen Campbell song book for Christmas. I have been a huge fan ever since and of course like so many others I miss him now that he is gone.
One of the very best things about youtube is all of these great old clips from TV shows and concerts, that I have never seen before are helping reintroduce me to his talent and his humanity.
May peace be forever yours Glen, you done good.
You said it brother.
I’ve recently have become obsessed with this song in every form and this is one of the best versions. Thanks for posting.
Jimmy Webb and Glen Campbell definitely one of the best songs of all times and what a great performance for a Mr. Jimmy Webb. I'm telling you just awesome beautiful keyboards
Still gives me goosebumps.
This song never gets old. I've listened to it so many times over the years and each time is like hearing it the first time again. I loved when Little Big Town sang this with Jimmy on the piano when Glen was honored at the ACM's.
One of my very favorite songs! ❤
Jimmy Webb and Glen Campbell - two amazing talents.
I agree that at one time The View was repeatable. This is that time. The man who wrote the song playing piano is fine. The collaboration is priceless. Loved this posting. Glenn is a class human being and a talent unmatched.
It’s prob the most beautiful song in country music. Musically
What a duo - one an incredible singer and the other the song writer's song writer. Thanks for posting.
This was especially nice to showcase Jimmy Webb’s piano arrangement.
This was not the place to show off a piano arrangement.
This song IS Jimmy. Such beautiful chord structure and melody.
@@jimstandwhy not? Jimmy created this song and is an integral part of this performance.
My father was always listening to music on lp's and Glen was one of his many favorites. I love the memory of him with earphones on tapingvmusic 9n cassettes to listen to in the car . Miss you so much dad.
Bob Dylan said Wichita Linemen was the greatest song ever written and to watch Glen and Jimmy Webb who wrote it was magnificent to say the least. Dylan saying that sais it all about this wonderful song the chord progression and the lyrics are mindblowing only could be written and composed by a musical genius like Jimmy Webb RIP Glen.
Glen so much of my childhood. God bless you, R.I.P.
I´m so glad I found this treasure, fan of Glenn but specially with Jimmy Webb songs
I think I just touched Gods voice....❤❤🙏
I couldn’t believe the audience wasn’t standing!! I would have been.
Nice segment. Great to see Glen performing live with Jimmy.
Thank you Glenn for inviting me out to L.A. .....from Wichita. Best move of my life.
"And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time" - Jimmy Webb
One of the best lyrics EVER written. Great song, made even better by the fabulous piano work of Jimmy Webb. As a composer, one should also note how absolutely minimal Jimmy made his work. Nothing that needed to be said was left unsaid. The economy of words is breathtaking, in itself.
I was a lineman at Los Angeles power company for 25 years, great job, long hours.
Both in absolute top form. Absolutely astounding.
These two only 25 years ago!! Where did the time go? Glen lived a magical life. He had his trials and his glory days!! We enjoyed sharing his gift of talent!❤
This is magic. The character in the original key is the professional lineman. In the secondary key he's talking to his love. Incredible changes and melody note selection. Way way above average. I heard this 300 times but never heard it.
Beautiful seeing them together when more of him was here. Incredible song, incredible voice, singer and player.
Thank God these two men found each other.
Fell in love with this duo at the tender age of 12. Still tugs at my heart....brilliant musicians! True crafstman.
Jimmy webb songs..classics!!
This song brings me to tears every time.
Thank you. .Oh to be in the audience.. great music... great musicians..
When the view had class acts. Long gone.
These two - I was blessed to grow up in this time of such great music. Never be another Glen Campbell - Webb so so great....
This song is one of my favorites. So beautiful.. There's a version with the philarmonic..Gorgeous.
This song is timeless. RIP. Glenn. 🙏🙏
He,s in heaven now singing with the Angels playing great guitar. Jimmy will join him one day John 3:16 God willing "Believe is the only way there.
*we ALL will join him---no one outlives the human lifespan....
This was back when The View was an actual show, not a hatefest. And now, the world is a different place without Glen Campbell.
you can move
@@raybrown3510 idiot.
Amen to that brother
So true.
Christopher Caldwell Totally Agree
Still love this song ❤
Jim Webb was a musical genius, and this was one of his best compositions, but what really makes this song work is the intonation of Glen Campbell's amazing vocals.....it was the perfect song for a perfect singer.
who knew mr webb was so masterful on the piano;. this was epic.
I was a Wichita lineman at the time this song was written. I was working my way through college by working for the Texas Electric Service Company in Wichita Falls, TX. One of my crew mates had a country band, and I always wondered if he had a connection to this song.
I don't recall ever hearing this particular ending. I like it! Shows off his natural three octave range. I sing and most folk even enjoy it when I do, but Glenn's voice, even as you can start to hear the age in it, is so expressive and clear and he was 64 at the time of this video. I hope my voice holds up half as well, as I just turned 60 this year and can already feel the high notes coming out w/ a whole lot more efffort, if I can reach them. smh
Awesome!!! What a great talent RIP Glen Campbell.
Glen Campbell...one of the greatest talents of all time !!!
My favourite song ever - what wonderful, poignant moments
Never gets old listening to that voice, listening to Jimmy Webb tunes…the talent of that man was endless, part of the Wrecking Crew, years with TNT, TV, and living his last years at the Biltmore here in Phoenix playing golf. Lots owe a lot to him, i just enjoy
Glen Campbell will be remembered forever.
Loved this interview with Glenn and Jimmy Webb.
What a sublime version of this classic song. Jimmy is all over it with some fantastic embellishments.
His piano is perfect.
Best ever version. If you think it's too much piano, listen again with good headphones.
I am and it's still too much piano
There isn't too much piano...it's just too loud in the mix compared to Glen's guitar...otherwise perfection.
Piano walking all over everything ….. even the guitar solo imho
I can't stop my tears!
Jimmy webber played that so beautifully
Thank you, Harry, for posting this....absolutely beautiful
Thank you for bringing this to all of us. I find myself home in Pennsylvania watching Glen performing on the Goodtime Hour!!
I am African American and allI can say is PERFECTION!!!
Thank you for this. It is simply an incredible everything. Notes, cord arrangements musical and vocal perfection, capturing your heart and imagination taking you to that place of wonder we all have inside.
This is the only thing good The View has ever brought to us men
Glen agrees with that.
get a safe space
@@raybrown3510 wow, you don't stop. liberals snowflakes are the ones who need a "safe space"
The only thing they did that was good period, man or women. Pack of witches, Whoopi, the head witch. Still waiting for her to leave like she promised.
I was a late bloomer for Glen. What a beautiful gift he left behind.
Great post! I remember watching this wonderful interview and performance. Excellent stuff as always! Thank you, breautube.
Thank you for posting this gem
Just a stunning song. Glen Campbell was so great.
