  • In 2012 legendary country singer Glen Campbell was honored with a lifetime Grammy Award, celebrating a career that boasted such hits as "Galveston" and "Rhinstone Cowboy." But the singer, suffering from Alzheimer's, was facing his final tour - a farewell in more ways than one. Anthony Mason caught up with Campbell for this Emmy-nominated profile that was originally broadcast on February 12, 2012. (Campbell died on August 8, 2017, at age 81.)

    In 1968 I was in the Marines and Eli was actually sitting on my bucket cleaning my rifle when I heard Glenn Campbell singing Galveston. I had a girlfriend in Pomona California that I was engaged to. I was truly afraid of dying before I would see her again. That song hit me hard because it was talking about me I felt. I was seriously wounded but survived. The Marines gave me an “early out” and I got to come home. Three days later I married my sweetheart. We have been married for over 59 years and every time I hear that song I cry real tears.

    Always liked Glenn, but, since he passed, have been watching everything on him on u-tube, and really found out, what a fabulous, talented, gifted wonderful human being he was. He was so humble and straight forward, he was himself, all the time, no put ons. Seen him and Tanya on magazines, when they were doing their thing. I really liked them together. Love both of their voices, But his wife is a wonderful person also. And his children, God Bless them all, what a loss for family, and all his many fans.. We miss you Glen Campbell. God has a class act. Good for him. Glad he changed, we know we will see him one day.

    I listen to *Glen Campbell* everyday! Back in 1969, I was 14 years old. My brother brought home Glen's new album " *GALVESTON* " I fell in love with his songs!
    Then I watched his show every Sunday Night! Then I believe it was moved to the middle of the week.. I wanted to be on his show and sing with him!
    He was such a beautiful, well mannered man who could sing and play that Guitar! So, I taught myself guitar, but by the time I was half way decent
    on Guitar, Glens shows was gone. Never got to meet him. Wish I had. Back then my favorite group was The Beatles. Glen was next!
    Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Glen is up in Heaven doing what he loves to do the most! God, thank you for giving us Glen, we will see him later AMEN! ✝⛪💗🤗🎸

    I was fortunate enough, to see this legend in 2012. It was bitter-sweet, hearing the classics & knowing of what lay ahead for him. I trust that he rests in peace & knows how much he was/is loved & missed. These legends have layed a foundation for the newer artists to build on. Thank you for sharing your gift, talent & life with us.

      @mjleger4555 Год назад +2

      I agree emphatically! People are living longer today than ever before and with aging, body parts, organs, even brain, start to show wear and tear over time. Alzheimer's is something I detest with a passion, because it so cruelly robs a person of their mental faculties through no fault of their own, it's plaque that builds up in the brain over time. We just lost Tony Bennett to the disease a few days ago, and like Glen, he could still remember song lyrics when he couldn't tell you what day it was or where he performed last night.
      Music, is so important and I can't help but think another part of the brain holds in the music and lets it show forth longer than any other physical trait a person has. Glen lived to age 81, Tony lived almost to age 97, so it affects people differently and perhaps affects the brain slower in some people than others. Glen will have been gone from us six years in a little over a week from now, but he lives on in his music and will a long time more, as will Tony Bennett's music also. Frank Sinatra lived to 82, has been gone nearly 25 years now, and his music is also still going strong! Good music is never forgotten; people always like hearing old songs!

    Ashley, if you see this, I'm 33 years old and listen to your fathers music every day. More young people need music like the stuff he wrote and covered. Your father was an an inspiration to us all. I wish everyone could spread the loving kindness that was in his soul. People don't realize how perfect Glen was. Glen had perfect pitch, he almost never missed a note while playing guitar, and could lead the band single handedly. Unfortunately His albums don't emphasize his guitar playing as much as live recordings (Probably due to time constrains, but we all know glen can shred with the best of them, even in his older years) He is also well versed in other instruments other than the guitar, such as the banjo and bagpipe. Most, if not all country musicians should aspire to be like him.

    I was lucky to see Glen on this tour. It was very touching. He was a real trooper too. When he would mess up a line he would laugh it off. I will never regret seeing that farewell concert.

    Thank you Ashley for the support and love you showed to your father. The love and anguish of his condition was apparent in your expressions while talking about his condition. Those that are very familure when thinking of my own dad.

    Very few guitarists can make a guitar talk. But he could. Some footage of interviews in his prime show him having a razor sharp mind and fast responses - the same skills he showed in his playing. One of the best players to strap on a guitar - quite possibly the best ever. Sorely missed...

    I can assure you, cause I made a couple of his goodbye tour shows that if they made a love meter it would have been pegged out. A few hiccups maybe, but everytime there was one, the meter pegged even harder. Lots of standing ovations assured not only was the family behind him with love, the audience was too.
