  • Kevin Bentley ( thepalletcabin) shares his "Pallet Cabin" with us- one he made from recycled and free pallet wood. This cabin, at 12' by 12', stands as a great little hunting, guest, or weekending cabin or cottage, or could potentially be used/converted into a tiny house for full time living. Kevin, based in Georgia, (and a tiny house fan) has many other projects in the works, so be sure to check out his Facebook page, and subscribe!

    I love this guys resourcefulness using all these reclaimed wood products. It's amazing what some people can do when they put their mind to it. I'll bet this guy didn't even have $200 dollars in this project. Gotta love it.

    Ye its holding up. Yet for warmth during cold seasons it's not going to work. The heat from your stove/fireplace will got out between the cracks. Unless, you put in insulation with a inner wall.

      Absolutely Nothing wrong with it, I got enough Pallets for pallets for free from Grocery Stores and retail stores that they were just going to throw out to build a 21X24 (504 sq. feet) Cabin on my families land in Northern New Mexico on the Rio Grande River. I have friend who's husband owns a construction company and had him save enough 2x4's and 4x4's out of houses he's remodeled to build the entire thing, I've also been going around to garage sales and buying other stuff I need like my kitchen cabinets (sink included) which I paid $50 for, my bathroom sink which is one of those "mushroom looking" sinks that cost almost $300 that I paid $5 for, my bathtub and toilet I got for free from my neighbor for free when they remodeled there bath room and bought 2 quarts of the avacado green procelin paint off the internet to repaint the tub, toilet and the bathroom and kitchen sink, yes I know I'm weird but I kinda like the green because it's unique and noone does it anymore. I got my 2 solar electric system from an RV dealer that buys and redo's Old Rv's and campers for like $10 each and will be more than enough to run what little electric I will have. I'm not putting a a full size stove in the house, I made that decision about 6 months when I sat and realized that I don't really use a full size oven enough to justify buying/having one. I will have a Microwave, a pressure/slow cooker and counter top air fryer combo that does like 9 different types of cooking which I already have, between those 3 I can and do already cook everything. My only cost once I get down to New Mexico will be the cost of sheet rock, screws and the metal joiners. The only thing I'm still debating on is whether to use Insulation Board or spray in insulation. There's already an old pole barn on the property that I will use the side metal for the cabin roofing after cleaning and painting and then use as a gazaboo after. When all is said and done I'm figuring it's going to cost me somewhere around 6k to put it all together. %04 square feet doesn;t sound like alot to live in but I live in a 400ish square foot apartment over a garage now so it will be an upgrade for me, lol.

    Very cool. I would love to build one! I would like mine to be partially underground, and envision it as permanent, although the ability to move it would be nice too. There's got to be a lot of satisfaction in just gathering some scrap wood and pallets and building something you can LIVE and function in. I love that you have a rain barrel! There was once a time when a LOT more living and working was done outside our homes.

    Can you imagine the housing we could build with all of the GOOD materials we throw away in the USA? Housing for homeless - for one. Or just housing for people that aren't into the McMansion lifestyle (self included).

    • @gottcha03
      @gottcha03 9 лет назад +16

    • @TheJemmaGrl
      @TheJemmaGrl 9 лет назад +16

      I'm not even granola at all - although I'm sure I have green hippie tendencies...I just love the idea of putting more emphasis on my experience than my possessions - and being much kinder to the Earth than I am now. You know? Why use coal/nuclear energy when I can EASILY use solar? Why have to turn the faucet on each time I need water - when it's in my power to get water from the sky? You know...it just makes sense.

      YES INDEED. There should be no homeless in the USA!!! We see a massive theft scam to cause harm to nations all over the world by psycopathic SABBATEAN FRANKIST Satanic occult new world order scum. Our nation should be doing very well but it is their massive criminal activity that things are as they are. We need to end their debt based currency and declare housing to be exclusively for the purpose of housing people. We must stop evil in power. EVERYONE GET TOGETHER TO BUILD VIABLE HOUSING FOR THE HOMELESS!! Help them create supportive and self-sufficient communities using super food producing technology like aquaponics which creates a vast amount of 100% organic vegetable produce, as well as fish with very little water. Stand together against evil in power. The people are what makes this country great!

    This is more than a mancave.... YOUR teaching people about a future without a mortgage. Many people spend a lifetime in a self imposed work/debt cycle just to pay for a place to store your things and spend a few waking hours in while your not out living your life. Many are paying for more square feet than they use....this includes extra money they work to pay for heating, cooling, taxes, decorating, cleaning, maintaining and insurance....You are inspirational and I thank you for sharing. With a little time and creativity you have created a home that many people would LOVE to live in. The little oil you used to protect the wood is better than all of the plastics and carpeting that many have in their homes that is off gassing daily. 8 hours per day we sleep....many work 8 hours a day...to spend your life paying for a large home that you actually only use less than a 1/3rd of your time seems to be a wasted existence.

    Gosh! It brings back memories of my childhood. My grandfather lived with the bears and he cleaned up his chicken coop. For years it was a hunter's cabin. I arrived when I was 8. He lived in the 200 + log cabin part...quite small...and my uncle & aunt lived in the house attached to it...larger but small. I lived in the chickencoop/turned hunter's cabin. My father and brother would show up every 3 to 6 months for an overnight visit. I had bunk beds in the coop. You could see outside through the cracks, just like yours. It was in this coop that I started to write stories. I just love your chicken coop turned man's cave.

    we had neighbors in rural northern Maine and they would go to the cedar mill and get all the rejected short lengths of cedar logs cut in half that were made for log homes to side their homes with. Well they also had to put something to coat and protect the wood. While they were siding the house they would solicit everyone for used motor oil from when people got their oil changed. They would also solicit gas stations for 55 gallon drums of used motor oil. You guessed it, they too used the motor oil to coat and protect the cedar. You have to admit that was very ingenious of the folks, as the only cost was for gas in their vehicles to pick up their free siding materials. It was a win win for both donors and recipients of the materials.

The creek belched out so much ice the past winter, that it wiped out my 20+year old fire pit. It was made out of large stones when I was much younger. Your brick and rebar idea is just what I needed. What a great project you have made :) Great job. Keep going. And for those that are talking about not using motor oil because it will ignite,...... that's such nonsense. People have been using used oil to treat lumber for ages and I have done it myself. It preserves wood very well and for a long time

    I love this! We built a 16X16 storage shed out of pallets at 13 years ago, people laughed and mocked us. They all asked who the heck makes anything out of pallets. We are laughing in the end!

    Staining your wood with used motor oil, BRILLIANT! I wonder how it will hold up. Just don't get any open flames near it lol

    • @smallenginedude71
      @smallenginedude71 8 лет назад +12

      motor oil actually is pretty hard to ignite. it needs some pretty big temperatures for it to ignite. dropping a match into motor oil will not make it ignite. its hard to ignite for a reason.

      smallenginedude71
      True but what about when soaked up into a fuel source like wood? I know stumps that we have poured oil onto burn super hot.

    • @smallenginedude71
      @smallenginedude71 8 лет назад +7

      95TurboSol yes. That is correct. However simply running a match over that wood or even putting a blow torch on it, will not make it light up immediately. However putting an ignition source on it long enough would make it ignite

      You all know used motor oil is carcinogenic, and really has a bad smell.

      clean new motor oil is a whole different animal and would work.

    Many years in factory. Did some pallet stuff my own shop. Someone brought up the unknown history of pallet being used. Hazard spill from wicked chemicals, not auto oil or common use. If kids are around; scratching their names, pulling large or small splinters etc. Well done carpenter and design work....

    Wow!! Good job brother! I have been building a cabin/house using pallet lumber on my walls! Its 1000 square ft. 2 bed room 2 bath. Its about 85% complete and as it stands I only have $4600 invested! Using pallet and rough cut lumber. I am gonna do a walk through video when I'm done. I posted a video of the living room walls already. Thanks for sharing! Atb. Tony

      yes indeed Amber, I had to temporarily stop working on it. I fell off the roof and broke 8 ribs, and bruises all over my body!! when I healed from that then I had surgery on my neck. I had several herniated discs C3 through C7 so its taking me some time to recover. but i should be ready in another couple of months! I hope!! atb Tony
