Building a cabin in the woods, from log to lumber. An off-grid DIY project with friends.

A few years after our cabin burned in a wildfire Molly and I were inspired to build another where it stood. Just for funsies. This one would be much more humble. Less a tiny house and more a modern take on your basic alpine hut that stocks the essentials. 200 square feet, saltbox roof, unconventional and exposed framing, a simple kitchen. Room to comfortably sleep three.
All the wood--other than the floor joists and plywood--was either chainsaw milled by us on site, or is salvage from a farm about 20 miles down the coast. It's all redwood, except the doug fir floor.
The trees we milled were all killed in the wildfire, then either fell in winter storms, or were felled by us. That wood was dried for about a year and the build took over a following five months.
Materials cost was $17,400. The bulk of that was in the salvaged old growth redwood ($7100) and the French doors and two sliding windows that we purchased ($5400). Of course this doesn't include the tools, the workshop, the land, the lessons along the way, or the 40 years of food, shelter, and genetic success required to bring all of us to this moment.
Helping hands, in order of appearance: Molly, Joey, Jake, Ben C, Jason, Emily, Ian, Jon, Ben S, Kate, Darren, Chris, Leah, Maxson, Simone, Gabriel, Allie, Pedro, Selen, Rachel, John, Andrew, Lumen, Rob, Parker, Linda, and Carey.
Woodstove is a 3kw model from Tiny Woodstove, futon mattresses is a J-life shikifuton, toilet is Throne Composting Toilets, cooktop is a Flame King, lights are solar shed lights, chainsaw mill is a Granberg. Curtain fabric from Handa Textiles. Cordless tools are Milwaukee but I wouldn't read too much into that... all pro-grade tools are fairly comparable and brand allegiance is largely a testament to battery investment.

I love this side of youtube. No hate, no drama, no fast-living modern world. Just a dude having fun with his hobby in silence and peace
Thanks so much. Appreciate your appreciation.

The production value on Milwaukee tool's newest commercial really seemed different this go around... Amazing work Jeff & friends ❤
Very obvious isn't it?
Found a lot of joy watching this. Thanks for sharing!
The community aspect of your builds is the most inspiring piece. I took to heart your previous post about involving friends and family and will be involving a motley crew later this fall on a big deck rebuild.
Всем крепкого здоровья!
Very impressed, beautiful work!
That is a spectacular little cabin. The lines are clean, the wood is warm and the rooms are functional. Nice build, well done.
Building a wooden house in the forest brings a sense of peace. Surrounded by nature, with the warmth and scent of wood, this house is a perfect retreat for those looking to escape the stresses of modern life. A beautiful example of craftsmanship and respect for nature!✨🌲🏕️

Vietnam Hello friends from all over the country
GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU SO DAMN MUCH!
Ok this looks amazing and there’s some fantastic editing as well as craftsmanship on display, but where’s the insulation? Surely the cabin would have benefited from at least some wall insulation let alone underfloor and in the ceiling?
Nah, we're good. It's meant to be a fairly basic shelter-- not a home, not a vacation cabin-- with exposed framing (so no insulation) and you can get away with a lot with coastal California weather. Never all that cold or hot.
No electrical. No plumbing. No insulation. It might look nice, but it's just elevated essentials.
Nice 😊

Wow
บ้านคุณสวยและน่าอยู่มาก
Loved this. Were the trees already down and dried out? Milling job looks superb.
They'd all been dead a while and fell in storms, or we felled them. Dried the milled wood for about a year more.
❤❤❤❤❤
Do kinda think it's weird seeing a group of hawthorne Yuppies out of the city, up in the hills and actually building something when they're more about book clubs and tofu farts. How did that happen?
Totally. Maybe a good opportunity to examine one’s assumptions.

Wow, what a Project. Fantastic work together! No insulation needed ?

🤩
Really nice cabin and very nice work but….no insulation at all? That stove is gonna be workin hard.
It's not. Small space and coastal California temperatures. See my other replies for insulation stuff.
@@jeffreywaldman gotcha, for some reason I assumed you were more in the pacific north west. Thanks for the correction!
❤❤❤❤
Excellent work,Could you share the dimensions of the plan, please? Thanks
It's all in the description
Hey, Amazing amazing job. I have a few questions.
After cutting the fresh wood, can moisture be a problem?
Is it necessary to treat the wood because there could be a termite risk?
Thank you for all your amazing work.
The wood is dried for a year and redwood is pretty bug resistant
Thanks for the response.
beautiful, but labor intensive.
👍🙂
Hi
Will that single exterior wood layer be enough? For thermal isolation and bugs?
It's two layers of tongue and groove with a layer of house wrap in the middle. Old growth redwood, which is pretty bug resistant. Not much in the way of insulation of course, but its coastal California and a small space. It'll be just fine for what it is.
@@jeffreywaldman thank you Jeff, I saw the tongue but miss the dual layer and the middle wrap. Agree. Also, a new HVAC with heat pump and a basic solar system could easily improve the summer. Excellent video, and excellent build!!!
Did you not have to dry this wood at all? What was the moisture content?
I mentioned in the description that we dried it for about a year. Content was something like 15%. It was hard to get a solid reading, but mostly sub 20%, which matched the content on all of the other interior wood on the property. That sort of reading made sense to me, for buildings which don't have heating and see occasional use.
One benefit of using redwood-- it shrinks less than most woods when drying. So a lot less change to contend with.
@@jeffreywaldman I missed that and was just curious about it - Thank you for the response. Very nice project.
Very pretty, but... No insulation?
Was wondering the same thing. Agree, it’s beautiful!
Nope. See other comments or the description for why.

Wow I saw a hammer...Thought all you had were nail guns...
When the nail gun batteries run dry we hit the back of the guns with the hammer to keep driving nails.

Can you explain the finances of building a cabin?
I did. In the description.
