This man's defense is just impeccable. I'm not a boxer but he is the only person that inspires me to box. Not for money, but just for the hell of it. Peace to James Toney.
Not for money.lmfao.thats good cause no ones paying ya
Met james after my first fight.......it was against one of his sparring partners......gave me love and amazing advice for my career nothing but respect for this man. (PS he is fucking HUGEEEE in real life hahah)

lovely movement, its surreal seeing an old out of shape guy pulling off this slick movement lol almost hard to believe
He is not out of shape as one might think as a matter of fact he is in very good boxing shape for a heavy weight just to let you know it's impossible for any one to spar that many three minute rounds and be out of shape.
+Tommy Robertson Yeah but he could of been in better shape, he was in pretty good form for a boxer cardio wise at cruiserweight but he had shown signs of fatigue in the later rounds. But his cardio was never bad but I think he could of had improvements with more road work etc. Toney was so relaxed and picked his shots so well, that he never wasted any energy...the biggest form of fatigue in sparring is muscles tensing up and becoming stiff, Toney is one of the most naturally relaxed boxers I've ever seen. it's pretty amazing how fat he got and how well he was still able to move, retain speed and have good cardio.
Ton Robert exactly he knows nothing
There’s in shape road work ,bag work and pad work etc.. then there’s fighting shape, toney has done countless rounds over his career, and he has that threshold where he can be on the couch then go spar ( wouldn’t be so sharp but I bet he could do 6-10 rounds 100%
6:40 rare footage
KidDynamite40 lol
Lmao!
Vintage
😂😂😂😂
This is to funny men lol
JT on a treadmill (6:30)? Get the fuck out of here!
Me to......fell in love with boxing in middle school cuz of anger management issues! It was either 6 months in the boxing gym or 6 months in juvie, I chose boxing, and that was 13 years ago!
James Toney is a man's man.
#RESPECT
#LEGENDARY
#JAMESTONEY
#LIGHTSOUT
wow toneys one tough guy he goes this hard in sparring and hes' had 80+ pro fights! true warrior!
Sad to see him get hit so much. I get his defence is great; but he’s still taking big shots from big guys. You can see it in his speech today
He did what he loved man. We all pay the price in life Brother we don't all get to live.
now this guy is a rare breed people.
we need a guy like this.
Toney will give any heavyweight in the game today a tough time. Its a treat watchin him spar
james is so relax in here and can see all the punches comming
James Toney is a beast!
his style is so aesthetic the guy is a boxing artist
James Toney vs. Lamon Brewster would have been epic.
What a great fighter!
great head movement
james toney training is a rare sight
The illusive one,the greatness of a boxer is always in his defense,Toney is a specialist!!
it does help you to know all these martial arts but also as you say just fight.
I always have my students watch James Toney, and study guys like Willie Pep also
toney!!! your the greatest no doubt baby!!!!
james toney has a killa headmovment i like the style !
Traumatic Brain Injury - ESPN Outside the Lines
Its the first video, with James Toney in the picture
I agree with all you're saying but, I think all you said after "You gotta understand" demonstrates why I don't think its real fair/valid to look at boxing and MMA as the same sport. Again, no disrespect to boxing (I'm an MMA guy myself) because certainly a BJJ guy would be destroyed in a boxing match against a boxer.
@RealDealBoxing13 really and what were the names of those pro MMA fighters u sparred with? and was it sparring boxing or kickboxing?? just curious
born in detroit grew up in ann arbour michigan and now lives in california thats your answer 4 james toney
Its not about how you start its how you finish. The realist shit I heard in years.
I fought a mma fighter in the streets and I knocked his ass out clean, not only did I knock him out, but I did it by slamming him, and never not once stepped into a cage it trained in mma.....my point is, in a street fight, it's 50/50, you have to be a fighter to know what I'm talking about, I'm from south Florida I lived in the Miami area, mma don't mean shit to us, especially when street a fighter can knockout a mma fighter
you will never see better boxing technique then in this video the best natural boxer i ever seen even if he not in shape
@DestroyerAlexandros oh, boxers are incredible athletes! I would agree, the best. But I don't think that makes them better fighters than mixed martial artists, not at all. Also keep in mind, a boxer can put your lights out but a MMA guy isn't gonna throw a leg kick with his chin stickin out. Again, I just think this shows why the 2 sports are so different from one another.
toney and tyson are very different and unique with there styles
HAHAHA and that's actually my favorite boxer but that was funny
@DestroyerAlexandros I agree, strikers are becoming dominant, but MMA striking and boxing are to me, two very different things. Again, just because of what you have to defend. Plus consider the glove sizes, that makes a big difference as well. As for going at it again, not in a match you won't, you lost. Going again would the same as Manny's sparring partners going again. And a concussion can easily, easily come from head kicks and knees as well as GnP.
can someone please translate what he said about bernard hopkins? what was the reason he "wasnt old school"
Was this at U C Berkeley?
@TylerDurdenK7 good assesment of james toney
Going from someone who throws punches without regard to someone who places punches, I feel like I went from checkers to chess
going from manny to this. i felt like someone hit the slow mo button
Any UFC fighter can still destroy a boxer if they were two guys on the street with no limitations. No need to be nieve, but it's the truth.
Evan Angus I am a boxer and agree but a MMA fighter doesn’t beat a boxer on the street 10/10 times or even 8/10 times
"View the street fights on youtube".
Why?
Oquendo is my guy..I'm from the Chi too and talk to him sometimes..Toney was given a gift in that fight..
Toney is the man
iono but he trains at 360 health club in reseda. this video is shot there too
@jettatum Thats my point. toney shouldn't HAVE to resort to this. He deserves cash in the pugilist sport. I also feel bad that Coture gets cheated out of cash that he deserved. Its unfair for all parties involved
Good call alex...I watched the fight and it was just an amazing display of courage by Margarito...He was running downhill the whole fight and Cotto ran outta gas...Good prediction!!!
Ya see Toney dancin to that Tony Yayo, G unit 4 life, everybody got a lil G in them.
@DestroyerAlexandros i havent noticed the Punch drunk part
@DestroyerAlexandros I 100% agree, although i honestly think that Toney could bust up alot of the current Heavyweight boxers
Exactly,Toney definitely watched a lot of Archie Moore..He picked up a lot of his moves from Archie,no doubt..Also,if Ali had stuck with Archie as his trainer,he would of had a lot more KO's than he did..
Randy Couture!
thank you man, cotto did display amazing skills, and sportsmenship, but was a bit too open for tht left uppercut, plus if margarito had a chin of even a good middleweight! margarito wud of lost, margarito has 1 of the best chins in the sport. next call judah clottey? who u picking?
hes fought them all. thats why.
@DestroyerAlexandros lol perhaps, regardless of age, Toney will always have that insane defence tho
What does he say about 3:22 when he says "old school fighters dont.............?
@KOCowboy1991 what's do you mean native reserve?
As HUGE of a boxing fan I am, I admit it is only a small part of fighting. An MMA fighter has a VAST assortment of attacks. A Boxer knows how to throw his hands...and only his hands.
Evan Last Jack of all trades, master of none.
James Toney is like a Floyd Mayweather Jr. with balls.
does anybody know what city james toney lives in?
were is his translator??
Toney is goat
@clairishe
wait a minute, you skipped to the part where Randy has grabbed him and over the part where Randy tries to make contact.
Yea yea its Lamon... He looks different without the corn rows!!!
what about him?
well enough. There is no doubt in my mind on two issues. 1. Toney would have fough on if it was him with the cut.
2. Rachman was on the way out by KO within 2 rounds of the 3rd.
thanks for the comment dog, most people dont have valid points to make...BTW did you know that Pavlik is set going to fight B-Hop next????? for real.
Waddaya think about that one?
and Cotto vs Margarito?
Peace
@aky19832001 wheres that interview?
Anybody knows who is that big guy that is talking??? Looks some kind of McCline...
@reno573 thank you. i love mma, but when i watch boxing, i want to talk boxing
I train at 360 too!! HAHA!! GREAT GYM!!
yea im so butthurt man
@gino26gman its called sparring gloves, not made to hurt...
@jettatum Point, hie reputation took a harsh blow after that. Its like a Greek Tragedy, sseing these guys with a lot of potential screwwed over by their own hubris or by other's doing.
those gloves are fucken hugee haha what are those things
@DestroyerAlexandros I'm not sure how applying textbook boxing disables an opponent from doing leg kicks and elbows or knees, all of which any 250 lbs guy can do with no problem. I'm not at all stating there isn't a lot of legitimacy to boxing, of course there is. But, as shown in Toney v Couture, or Art Jimmeson v Royce Gracie, MMA and boxing are different enough that bringing strictly the techniques of one to the other doesn't work.
@RealDealBoxing13 big difference. you can outbox me.
i can out EVERYTHING you.
but still much respect to boxing. combat is combat.
dregon people can't speculate that Jones used steroids, they can say with certainty he did, he failed a drugs test against Richard Hall in a lightheavyweight title defence. Jones is an all time great but so is Toney, don't forget Toney was dead at the weight against Jones, too.
@LegacyHernandez yes over 50 percent of street fights end up on the ground with 5 dudes standing kicking the shit out of you while your completely helpless and your BJJ does nothing. Its usefull against 1 attacker, how often does that happen? Boxing is just as usefull.
Toney is a legend in the ring but let's be honest he is better with his gloves on and mouth shut.
@DestroyerAlexandros I disagree. Obviously Boxing is part of MMA, but thats like saying hockey and baseball are the same because they both use sticks. I'm not denying that you're correct in the similarities, you're of course right. but when we compare the two it is I believe stupid because while boxing is part of MMA, its a different style of boxing to a point that its almost not boxing. Defending kicks knees elbows take downs, fighting from the ground etc make them different enough imo
I like Clottey. Lately, Judah has not been focused on being a good fighter. I think he's so caught uo in the limelight, that fighting has become more of a hobby to him...Clottey's a warrior and will prove it!!!
Roy is great athlete who went out of his way to not fight anyone tough. And HBO gave him all the exposure (AND MONEY!) to do it! Fighting ex-cops garbarge men you name it. He juiced up to fight Ruiz at HWT and and had to go off it to fight tarver at LHWT. It drained him and he was never the same. R.J got KTFO by Tarver and by HANDPICKED journeyman Glen Johnson . Toney (NOW 41) still hasn't been put to sleep by anyone and can still fight great. Where's PETER & RUIZ NOW? Nuff said
down and hold
Cool story.
@jettatum Yeah. I just find it sad that boxers today are avoided because they're TOO good. Mike McCallum, Winky Right, Paul Williams, and James Toney. all are top contenders and are screwed by bad management and politics. So MANY good fights have DIED because of this. And these caliber fighters deserve to be able to get the big show
I love when James toney gets defensive in sparing , many of his videos he lets himself get hit in the face for no reason
ooook.....
i agree on the archie moore comparison, but dnt agree tht he whooped rahman, rahman won the first 2 rounds(very tight) nd theres no doubt tht p4p toney much much better fighter than rahman, but rahman deserved to win first fight, and made an ok strt to the second fight, the cut put him off a lot, due to the headbutt. but still james toney is a ring ledgend, and the forgotten man in boxing. wat a great fighter he is.
why is his speech slurring
and a bit of the Old Mongoose, Archie Moore
i feel like when im boxing someone and they were ducking and bobbing that often i just wanna knee them in the face so bad lol
haha yup the cuban gold medalist?
Short handhand KO, very sweet
He'll have a belt in 8 months, thats my call
@DestroyerAlexandros I'm sorry, I'm not sure I'm following what you mean in your first sentence "Kickboxing or BJJ do". I'm not trying to be smart I'm just misunderstanding what you mean. And sure, you'll punch much harder, but in sports, thats why they weight classes make so much difference. If we're talking street fighting, thats a whole new ball game. And I agree kicks are risky for big guys, but, leg kicks are devastating and easy for anyone to do. (hang on character limit.)
James has fast hands too. I think James can handle Roys hand speed and head movement. He would just go to body. It's the foot speed. When roy decides move out of close range he's another world all by himself the matrix.
@jettatum Well supposedly no one wants to fight Toney in boxing.
he's getto. Getto fabulous, check my profile pic with him.
He's wearing his sapphire grill and chains.
He's a cool cat
B-Hop will not even be close to getting KOed by Pavlik.
He is a defencesive master, like Mayweather.
Pavlik will come straight forward as always.
The problum could come in the form of Pavlik's high work rate and long jab.
I'll hope for my man B-Hop, eventho i like the way Pavlik fights
Did u watch to night the small Tyson of feather weight ??? Gamboa is a real KO Maker... Fucked that American dude in round 1... In 1 or 2 years he gonna be world champion for sure...
and margarito and cotto is a realll tought one to call,i think its goin to b fight of the year, margarito is soo tough, and has more range than cotto, so i think marg will win, i like both men tho, but im cheering antonio as hes the underdog. u?
@neonblack88
.......
Boxing is as useful as any other aspects and elements of fighting.
