i dont think yall understand...this is james toney and gerald mcclellan sparring lol
Hearns vs Toney...
KING JAY ok!!!!!
no shit?
KING JAY right?
Oh i do Gman was a beast at Kronk b4 the accident
To stand right in front of one of the hardest hitters of all time and use a shoulder roll is just insane. G-Man was an absolute beast and James Toney is without doubt one of the finest masters of the art of boxing.
This footage is priceless!
Bruh do you see that and mMc Clellan couldn't hit him
James Toney one greatest chins in history of game vs biggest punchers in history those 16 oz gloves helped but even with 8s I don't think James goes to sleep he took shots from big as heavy weights CHIN IS UNTOUCHABLE.
Toney...the lazy genius
Only a true true boxing fan come up with that opinion👍👍
Efficiency is just intelligent laziness 😂
LETS PLAY that’s from echo from rainbow
He was Mayweather Jnr before Mayweather Jnr!
Housin' Authority George Benton was before any of these guys
To think james toney didn't start boxing until after high school. James toney is one of the greats. He would've been competitive in any Era of boxing.
jose soto quite a few boxers that turned champs started in their 20's.
boxers are made, not born.
thats becuz he was a badass quarterback. lol. he had full rides to play college and went to boxing instead.
Leon B punchers are made not born
+Jimmy Lee tell that to Tim Bradley and malignaggi
At the time of this sparring session, James was 19-0 and McClellan was 15-2.
McCelellan is so smooth...
James Toney is just brilliant...one of the most talented boxers of all time
manny had the best job in the world. he got to watch gman, roy jones, james toney, tommy hearns fight and so many more fight on a daily basis. he watched fights that would of been super fights on paperview in his hot ass gym. lucky fuckin man. rip to manny. one of the best to ever do it.
Toney fights with the calmness of me walking into my living room, he started to lay it on the G man at the end there............
redryan5048 Yeah, looked like he was outclassing him towards the end.
redryan5048 G-man would have done what Roy Jones failed to do to Toney, sparked him the fuck out!
shotgunshawzy Then the ever fading down the stretch G-Man would have been a record breaker as the only man to stop the get stronger down the stretch Toney, Fantasy my simple friend....
G-Man only ever faded down 1 stretch that was due to brain damage (Benn fight) which he apparently had syptoms of leading up to that fight, most if not all of his fights ended before round 8 because he was that explosive, (G-man didnt even know what a stretch was)
G-man was one of the hardest hitters of all time with a 94% K.O average ask Julian Jackson it is entirely plausible if he didnt sustain that devasting injury Toney's chin would have been severly tested.
shotgunshawzy Toney with his amazing movement, chin and great ring iq not to mention his serious power would be to much for the one dimenshional G-Man...
This video is a GEM.
McClellan was an awesome boxer. one of the best in my opinion. Pity it took a huge toll on him.
He and Julian Jackson are the hardest middleweight punchers of all time
@@fasmas2293 McClellan out gunned Jackson
@@martytdd1606 yes, but that doesn't mean Jackson is not one of the hardest punchers
Weight cutting was what really hurt Gman. Dude frame was more geared for light-heavy. Why you trying to pull that last bit of water from your body to make weight, it comes from every part of your body, including your skull, which is what protects your brain.
@@macamo9991very true
Legendary sparring
Pure finesse
Amazing fighters, Toney's style is so smooth all his movements have purpose and his defense looks easy to emulate but like other defensive masters there is a subtle artistry you can't teach. Notice his movements are not energy intensive yet highly effective, they are not jerked or forced also he is always in position to pivot, slide, move out of the way and counter punch. Great video thank you for sharing.
MB great analyse mate
MB Yeah toney's primary defense was bending at the waist it was so simple yet effective.
@@grapedrank666 he only bends at the waist when he anticipated the right cross coming. Floyd and Hopkins due the same that's what makes them defensive greats. Floyd and Hopkins have better footwork than Toney. The only flaw with Toney is he stands flat footed doesn't move much. Toney has great chin you can hit him with a Tyson best punch and he won't flinch. A real tuff fighter. He never was knocked out.
@@kevinaraujo4945 yes, but Toney it is not flat footed, he didn't train properly to have a good foot work. He do only the best and practically most effective kind of training, sparring.
@@kevinaraujo4945I don't think that's a flaw I think the fact that he could stand right in front and not get caught with a solid punch made him look even better
Toney could slip a punch and counter in his sleep!
0:23 that body shot was a beauty
What a gifted boxer Toney was.
Abraham Hernandez gerald mclellen was the real talent
not feared fighter aside from tyson toney and rjj moved up in weight to avoid gman according to everyone
@@A1Gz_ Actually Toney was calling out the G man for a while.
Toney is my guy, but tough to call that one. G-Man was a beast.
It was hard to hit Toney and then of course, he had an iron jaw. He was a great fighter.
yeah someday i hope to be as good as Toney.
you wont be.. stop dreaming!
Jax Wins too bad
Kedbuka Kronk where the best fighters come from #TEAMK9BOXING
@3rd Eye hahahaha a comment i made 3 years ago, get a life boy
Toney had "SWAG" in and out of the ring before the word existed. I just watched a mini documentary on toney from 1993 called "Toney Diary" (U.K. Show) has alot of rare footage a must have for all jt fans.
you got a link for that bro ?
I actually had to order it on dvd from a website called boxingjunkies.com its on disc # 21 of Toney career comes with sparring and interviews also, not bad think it was like 5 bucks.
thanks bruh
@@LiL-D..909 oh damn the site is down. Any chance you could upload it? I know there would be some work involved but the boxing community would surely be thankful for it. Cheers
Gonna watch thanks brotha
Toney a born fighter. So fluid and natural. Can't teach that.
If you know boxing..wow
Yeah
This video is an absolute treasure. Footage of these two sparring is a gem for any boxing fan. Toney was an all time great, no doubt about it.
James Toney... Natural born fighter...
McClellan is one of the greatest Middleweights of all time!
WORD UP. DYNAMITE.
Yep, he is. He is not complete boxer for me, though. Don't have pretty much defensive skills and boxing slickness and iq. If James was a little bit more stronger he easy beat him. Somebody like Hugler beat him too, i guess.
@@user-tf3dk5ev5kmcclellan would've knocked toney out if they fought. He knocked people out with body punches. He also hits harder than Tommy Hearns and Jon Mugabi. If he fought Hagler, its a possibility he couldve beaten him if he got got hagler out of there under 5 rounds. If it goes pass the 5th round, hagler would win.
@@xGhostRidah - McClellan's right hand was about the same power as Hearns at 160. Hearns was faster but McClellan had excellent timing and set up. McClellan would not have knocked out Toney, LoL. Toney was a whiz on defense with counter punches and could have over powered McClellan in the later rounds at 168. Toney had one of the best chins in boxing history and he fought and withstood heavy punches at light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight.
@@xGhostRidah верно ! Если вспомнить Джулиана Джексона который 2 раза отлетел в нокаут !
Pure pleasure to watch these two LEGENDS ! Bow down.
There must have been so much good action taking place at the Kronk gym (and other gyms of course) that the world will never get to see. Videos like these are like treasures. Someone should rummage mr Steward's bookcases for stuff like this now that he's gone...
True. Some great footage is yet still to be seen
lol you cant hit toney with a handful of rice
that's the funniest shit i've ever heard about a boxer lol
Ian G McClellan put him down in this fight after video finished
Roy Jones Jr did. He beat the shit out of Toney.
@@MultiMcgurk how do you know this?
@hamza khalliq
no he did not
toney lost his balance
and roy jones did not beat "the shit out of toney"
you know squat about boxing...
The mastery chess game in boxing makes the striking in mma look like a game of checkers. This is beautiful boxing.
I said "striking". I know Ju Jitsu is much more technical but that's grappling.
striking in mma looks like checkers because there are so many more dynamics to mma, spacing, timing of takedowns etc... if you are going to do a shoulder roll in mma and allow a grappler to get that close to you...guess what, you will end up on the mat...then you will find the true chess game begins...and you will find yourself tapping out. Or you will run into a kickboxer...and get your head kicked off.
Veterans Elite striking in MMA looks like checkers because it's largely wrestlers and bjj players using underdeveloped striking. The striking in MMA is trasj for the most part. There are a few that do it decently like TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt. Kelvin Gastelum is decent as well. MMA striking will continue to evolve if fighters seek out the proper trainers. TJ Dillashaw was recently seen sparring with Lomachenko. Conor McGregor sparred with a boxer as well.
I agree..But don't forget...The striking changes because of spacing and fear of being kicked or taken down
Veterans Elite of course the dynamics of MMA change striking. But a punch is still a punch. A jab is a jab. A hook is a hook. Many of these MMA fighters can't even punch properly because they haven't learned proper technique. And a lot of the boxing defense actually transfers well into MMA depending on the matchup. Garbrandt was using almost pure defensive boxing in his fight against Cruz. Aldo and Anderson Silva also use defensive boxing well.
James Toney was so fluid..He was like so smooth the way he moved..I really paid attention to his footwork not any dancing but perfect shuffling to close the distance..I like how he would catch his jab..turn and catch his right hand on his shoulder..and Bam uncoiled a right hand immediately after..Perfect timing Perfect distance..very fortunate to watch him..almost a perfect fighter..High fighter I.Q. for only having like 25 amateur fights..I could be wrong but 20 something. James Toney was special.
This is day 2 of Gman and Toney sparring.. on the first day of sparring, Gman dropped Toney with a liver shot!
Suge Knight ur here surprise
Sure knight How do u know that?
Routes to the body by Gman!
@@englishguy9680 Actually Toney got outlanded in this sparring sesion. So it wouldn't be a surprise if that liver shot knockdown were true.
Its bull shit... These gyn wars did knock years off both fighters
Wow man what a gem! G man and lights out are 2 of my favorite fighters ever. Always wanted to fight like Toney but was always more of a Gerald M style. Amazing to watch the styles come together.
Toney is just so pure. Graceful. Violent. Composed. This video has so much in it
I've seen it all in slow motion 5 times, James Toney is always the best teacher of cinetic balance on double work defense - attack, the first time that i Saw Toney fight was against Francesco Dell'Aquila in Europe, many many years ago, simply a great Master
Thanks for this my friend!one cam only imagine just how good this would have been!
james toney emphasises the noble art.
Man James must be one the greats of all time truly underrated in that respect the way is rolls and slips is such a aggressive defence. I've always been a big fan of James Toney a complete fighter.
Two great champs. Thank you very much for posting. I love the guys jumping rope in the background putting in work.
That's the best boxing gym in the world's history
GETTING KRONK.
James Tony SUPER!!! TALENTED. The G-MAN was a beast! I'd prefer to be a James Toney guy all day
2 of the very very best middleweights of all time --throw in my absolute favorite mw roy jones and you have the best of the best.--period --the toney vs jones fight was unparralleled
This is a gem two legends working with each other great upload
This is one of the GREATEST fights that never PROFESSIONALLY happened! Thanks for the upload!
Two of my favorite boxers! I never seen this before. This made my f***ing day.
2 of my favorites. Incredible
Great upload. Thank you !!
One of the greatest videos of sparring ever two legends one burnt out way too fast because of Nigel Benn God Rest his soul Tony he just was always a monster always a monster always skillset was out-of-this-world
💯
Gerald McClellan was so fierce that his technique was underappreciated. He was a pleasure to watch. Great, great fighter
Toney had talent but he was not successful because he's talented. He was successful because of his hardwork, non-stop practice, heart, and mentally being in the fight at all times. If he didn't have those other traits, the talent would have meant nothing. I can't discredit his achievements by calling him naturally gifted because I think he would have accomplished a great deal of the same things with or without his natural athleticism. A thinking fighter.
Nah. His former trainers all name as the most talented, but least dedicated Champion. Beautiful fluid, fast fighting style, but preferred eating to road work.
andook You're misunderstanding what I said. In the long run, you're right, but early in his career when he was developing his skillset he was a dedicated student. Maybe not as much as a dedicated athlete, but certainly a dedicated student.
yes, toney loved BOXING and beating up guysin sparring. fuck roadwork just kills the knees and ring stamina is different
Jordan McMurray
I know what you mean. Natural talent is a myth, Steward said that Toney would spar with anyone back in the day, he sparred so much early in his career, that is why he was so relaxed in the ring, it was like his second home. He was undisciplined when it came to running, diet etc, but he was totally dedicated to sparring and working on his skills.
Lucas Maximus more sparring more experience but more likely brain damage
thank god i finally found true boxing fans in the comment section. reading the comments is a god send to me! thank you guys
Thank you to whomever filmed this. I’m a better person for seeing this video.
Much appreciated.
Well studied fighters and fans understand
I think James might be my favourite fighter of all time.
Oohhhh my god. What a treat..... I’ve watched this 5or6 times through. About to do it again
Great footage
Thanks
This was still very early on in both of their careers. This is June 5th 1990, which is 5 years before McClellan stepped up and fought Julian Jackson. McClellan would fight another 13 times before that fight. James Toney who had also been pro for only 2 years at this point was 6 or 7 fights away from his legendary ko against Michael Nunn. The point of this comment is to say that this was, again, very early on in their careers which means this is nowhere near their prime years. You can see it if you compare the skills they display in this sparring match to what you see in their future legendary performances. Nevertheless, here in this video you see a lot of ring-maturity and skill that most fighters of today need maybe twice as much the time to develop. A lot of people have this idea that athletes get better with the generations but this couldn’t be further from true. It is not up to time to make a fighter great, it is up to the fighter.
Spot on
Fighters were better in them days.
James Toney got the better of that sparring session. He is so fast defensively It's unreal!
After seeing this I feel that if they had fought Toney would have taken Gerrald to school for 12 rounds with possible late round stoppage.
no
the gman is a much better puncher ..he'd have ko'd him..
Are you an idiot? Toney never been knocked out in his entire career. Only been downed twice one was off balance and the other he got up and won the fight anyways. Think before you speak
wutang
watch you mouth my friend...
Gman was a ko artist ,he was one of a kind.
Yet he couldn't knock out benn who's gotten koed by nobodies. Toney has never been knocked out in his career, barely has ever been hurt. so I don't know where you get that from but g man wouldn't have knocked Toney out regardless.
Not to mention Toney had fought some of the hardest hitting fighters at that time
2020 still watching and admiring the art of boxing 🥊
Yall notice the rhythm of that jump rope going in the background the whole time, everybody was in there working. This was one of the greatest gyms in boxing.
@Joe Lazarus - So Hagler avoided McClellan did he? How have you come to that conclusion, have you been at the magic mushrooms or something? Hagler retired in '87 and McClellan didn't turn professional till '88.
MrBarker73 ha ha ha ha lol
He must have got Gerald McClellan mixed up with Mike McCallum.
Thanks for the video 👌
The background noise is great. Skipping, timer, mumble of instructions. Raw.👍🏻
Never seen this before and good quality too what a gem
The amount of boxin excellence that is in this film is godly!
MISS MY GYM I WITNESSED GREAT WARS AT KRONK MUCH BETTER THAN A HBO FIGHT IT WAS GRAB YOUR POPCORN ITS SHOWTIME PRODUCED MORE WORLD CHAMPIONS THAN ANY OTHER GYM INCLUDING ME👊
Toney avoided Eubank???Are you born in 2000?
James provoced Eubank on Uk national TV.
On top Eubank admited that he couldn't beat Toney...
But I do like Eubank tho.
Thank u....Toney called out Eubank and Benn and they wanted no parts of Toney!!
Eubank admitted to that, and Benn style was pretty much tailor made for Toney.
@@rsk00000 No he wouldn't
Toney who went 9rnds with a way over the hill Barkley lol Benn walked through Barkley
@@boxinglegends6454 Toney was never in any trouble vs. Barkley
Very cool video!
I've always heard about the sparring session with these two where Toney admitted that McClellan dropped him pretty hard with a body shot, and James couldn't get up. But this one was fun to watch too.
And the size difference is striking. McClellan just always looked like a HUGE middleweight to me. I can certainly believe all those stories of him having to lose massive amounts of weight to make the limit. With his size, he could have easily fought as a Light Heavy.
C. C. Toney never said that
Both guys cut big weight for middle and super middleweight. Beautiful match up here!
Kamar people literally make shit up
Yah, Sam Peter, and Holyfield couldnt hurt Toney, nobody ever, hurt Toney in the ring, but Gerald, the guy getting schooled in the vodeo did?
LOL
Pants on fire
@@Onlykamar exactly, Toney said he could hit though. He admitted to getting hit by a good shot that stunned him. That's the only thing he admitted to LOL
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH
I do brother!!&i can just imagine how this would have looked in the pro's! Thank u!
Priceless session if you are a boxing fan two great Warriors going at it.
The Gman and Lights out... Wow, two top dawgs and one junkyard!
Amazing footage of warriors who have paid in full.
💯 Salute OG's
They wouldn't even need to be different skin tones to tell them apart you can actually tell by their styles this is priceless footage can't believe this is the first time I've seen this.
Just beautiful
WOW!!! I didn't know these guys had sparred! Much less that there was video! A rare treasure! I'd rather watch this sparring session then today's title fights. Absolutely!
Same. Last night, Shakur fought De Los Santos, and this sparring footage puts that fight to shame.
Wow great footage of two great champions
O wow g man and lights out...Thank you
Great Work
amazing footage
21 year old James Toney 22 year old Gerald McClellan 🔥 All Time Greats
This has been up for a few yrs here now and has more than 600 comments and the following has likely been pointed out a few times but I didn't see any comments saying so in the few I glanced at. Anyway, if the date at the bottom of the video is correct, the sessions took place at a time when James Toney was 19-0 and a full yr from knocking out Michael Nunn to become IBF MW champion. McClellan was 14-2, and would fight at light heavy about a wk after this date. Point being that both guys were still very young and were yet to make their names.
This stuff is pure gold!
Thank you, thank you, thank you
James Toney is pure class. There is something pure about a young Toney in the ring.
This is a priceless piece of footage here. In 1994 this would've been a super fight.
that video is pure gold
I never knew these two sparred wow. James moved so effortlessly very crafty . All time great any era
GM sends shivers down my spine everytime he throws those right hands.....Very hard puncher!!!!
this is gold!
Those were the days.........
To the uplader, much appreciation. This video is a work of art. The difference between toney's & flyods style is floyd's is more technically refined but that because offense is floyd's second priority. Toney doesn't mind getting hit. And toney also turns more off his defense into offense which ihappens as a result of his willingness to be in a phone booth with the reaper!
amenkhosmos phonebooth with a reaper!!nice
great footage the great young james toney good power quick hands and great defense sparring a tremendous puncher awesome
Wow this is incredible to watch
Fantastic. Look at the balance both guys have...great form and leverage...
Alot of these idiots on RUclips like to say that all-out fights that Mayweather instigated during his sparring sessions on all access are the best way to learn...pffft Emanuel Stewart had a stable of elites at the Kronk Gym...just look how Toney and McClellan both work ...like world class professionals.... honing skill sets...not trying to lay each other out....that's what you call sparring folks.......😎
Truth.
no they're just both so slippery and durable that they can't really ko each other, mcclellan was throwing bombs!
Terry Jackson I agree with @mrbruno
they were trying to ko each other.
Classic sparring session in one of the great gyms. Tony completely schooled G Man while looking like he's going through the motions.
That was worth every second of vieweing. 2 world champions sparring. And giving each other the business. that was great.
How does this only have 109k views ? It's Toney in his mothafucken prime and the hardest puncher at the time ever in boxing McCellen.....
That footwork at 5:47 by the G man 🔥🔥🔥🔥 This is truly a gem of a video recording.
@Piri Reis I dunno I gotta go back and look. I have a Terrible memory, but I’m sure it was nice. 😃
Early Xmas present to any boxing fan "Jewel" glad I found this :-D
